CULTURAL SPOTLIGHT: INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAYS
Celebrating Worldwide All October Long
Our Customers come from all over the globe and Ultra’s mission is to keep them connected to those who matter most, especially loved ones back home. October is an especially busy month when it comes to different cultural holidays, each one unique and meaningful.
YOM KIPPUR
Oct 1-2, 2025
Also known as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is one of two High Holy Days (the other being Rosh Hashanah) and is considered the holiest day in Judaism. It concludes the Ten Days of Repentance that begin with Rosh Hashanah and is observed by fasting and abstaining from work.
CHUSEOK
Oct 5-7, 2025
The literal translation being “Autumn Evening,” Chuseok is a South Korean festival celebrating the harvest. What some believe began as a worship ritual that included offerings to deities, Chuseok is a celebration of the good harvest that sees Koreans visiting their ancestral hometowns for shared feasts of traditional Korean foods. Other Chuseok traditions include ancestral memorial services and visiting ancestral graves, to tidy them up a bit.
MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL
Oct 6, 2025
The Mid-Autumn Festival is China’s annual harvest festival that sees families celebrating with traditional feasts. Chinese people observe the Mid-Autumn Festival by lighting lanterns and sharing & eating Mooncakes, traditional round Chinese pastries meant to symbolize completeness and unity.
TSUKIMI
Oct 6-9, 2025
Just across the sea, Japan celebrates Tsukimi, which is their annual harvest festival. Time is spent with family and they serve up dango, traditional sweet rice dumplings.
DIWALI
Oct 20, 2025
Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Lights, an annual fiveday celebration of the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma. Dharma is an Indian concept that essentially means “good” or “peace,” with Adharma meaning the opposite. Festivities begin two days prior to the main date (Oct 20th) and continue for two days after. Being a festival of lights, oil lamps, candles and lanterns are used to illuminate homes and temples. This massive holiday is marked with large family and community gatherings, including parades, and features a feast referred to as Annakut, which literally translates to “mountain of food.”
HALLOWEEN
Oct 31, 2025
Even being one of the most well-known October holidays, the origins of All Hallow’s Eve, AKA Halloween, are a little trickier to pin down. Many believe current customs were inspired by Gaelic traditions celebrating Samhain, the harvest festival (noticing a pattern?), while others point to Christian beginnings with their celebration of the saints during Allhallowtide. Observed in numerous countries around the world, Halloween has become a pop culture phenomenon, celebrating horror and the macabre with haunted attractions and themed events. In the US, many celebrate Halloween by carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns to display outside their home, and children dress in costumes to participate in trick-or-treating, going door-to-door to collect candy from neighbors.
