The United States is home to more immigrants than any other country worldwide. So much so, immigrants accounted for the entire growth of the total U.S. population between 2022 and 2023! Our local communities reflect this new growth, as our neighborhoods comprise a rich tapestry of international cultures. This Refugee Week (June 16–22), we recognize how diversity in the community is a superpower.
About 8% of total immigrants in the U.S. are considered refugees and asylum seekers. A refugee crosses international borders seeking safety from their country of birth. Every year, the U.S. President and Congress set the annual refugee admissions ceiling and allocations by region. In 2024, more than 100,000 refugees were resettled – that’s the most in 30 years! These refugees came primarily from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Syria and Myanmar.
World Refugee Week is the largest arts and culture festival on the planet. Each year, thousands of independently organized events take place across the globe. From university lectures to food markets and arts & crafts workshops, World Refugee Week presents us with opportunities to get to know our neighbors on a deeper level. By sharing our food, history, music and language, we exchange cultural knowledge that strengthens community ties through increased knowledge and empathy.
