March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day

As Irish families immigrated across Europe, North America and beyond in the 18th century, they carried their traditions with them. The first North American St. Patrick’s Day celebration was held in Boston in 1737. Soon after, cities around the globe began hosting St. Patrick’s Day festivals of their own, often blending Irish heritage with local customs. This rich cultural exchange with local communities is how St. Patrick’s Day grew to be one of the most internationally celebrated holidays!

The Luck o’ the Japanese

The streets of Tokyo’s Shibuya ward echo with bagpipes. Home to Asia’s largest and oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade, Tokyo will host the 2024 “I Love Ireland” St. Patrick’s Day Festival on March 20th. Traditional Irish music is extremely popular in Japan, and Riverdance troupes can be seen performing for large crowds. This cultural resonance is also present in the food and drink. You’re likely to spot beer gardens serving matcha-infused Guinness along the parade route.

Welcome to New Dublin

There are leprechauns living in New London, Wisconsin. On March 11th, they will change every traffic sign reading “New London” to “New Dublin.” Known to locals as Leprechaun Day, this event is organized by the human volunteers of the city’s Shamrock Club. The Club prepares months in advance to host a full week of highly anticipated St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Culminating with the Grand Parade, these traditions are beloved by the people (and leprechauns) of New London.

What would you pack for a 6-month stay on the International Space Station? Irish-American astronaut Cady Coleman brought along a century-old Irish tin flute! Floating weightlessly, she recorded herself playing the flute to wish us Earthlings a happy St. Patrick’s Day. Three years later, Irish-Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield gave us an encore. He sent his heartfelt St. Patrick’s Day wishes from the Station by singing an otherworldly rendition of “Danny Boy”, a traditional Irish folksong.

A talented senior graphic designer, Kristi will walk you through her design intentions and inspirations behind this March’s Activate.

Hi there! Kristi here, a southern Georgia peach who made her way over to the other side of the country in pursuit of beautiful photography. Design is my main passion, but aerial photography is my other! I’m a certified drone pilot; and have been since they were invented!

A modern take on a vintage aesthetic, reminiscent of the golden age of comics.

This design’s bold modern aesthetic evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the golden age of comics with emphasis on a main “character” on the cover that embodies St. Patrick’s Day. Colors are bold and primary, with hues of green, yellow, and white. The overall style exudes a sense of modern nostalgia, with exaggerated features and playful icons, accompanied by thick black outlines and design elements.
