TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: MEET MS. BOERSEN

Every month the Regina Reporters put a spotlight on a staff member here at Regina High School. This month we shine a spotlight on theology teacher, Ms. Boersen.!

How many pennies would fit in this room?

1 Million

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?

A maple tree because I am from Canada Island.

It changes into beautiful colors in the fall and can produce sap!

If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The Bible

What are you most grateful for and why?

At Kairos I was so grateful to see God working through the individuals and groups there. I am grateful to the openness the students have to God’s action. I am grateful for my Kairos leaders.

“What are your favorite days at work and why?

Ohhhh. Honestly, the mass days. I love when we have mass together in the chapel. Oh or the Powerpuff Senior Rally day. Or Spirit week. There are just so many great days!

KAIROS SPOTLIGHT

Traditionally, Regina’s Kairos retreat is an opportunity offered only to our school’s seniors However, each year a handful of Juniors can apply to be Kairos Leaders I was lucky enough to be chosen to be a leader this year Participating in the Kairos retreat was a transformative experience that surpassed my expectations in many ways The retreat provided a unique opportunity for introspection, spiritual growth, and deep connections with the Class of 2024.

One of the most impactful aspects of the Kairos retreat was the emphasis on mindfulness and living in the present moment. Through various exercises, I learned to appreciate the beauty of the present, letting go of past regrets and future anxieties

The sense of camaraderie that developed among the retreatants was truly special Sharing personal stories and listening to others' experiences created a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Bonds formed during Kairos extended beyond the retreat, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding that continues to enrich my life.

Overall, the Kairos retreat provided a space for self-discovery, spiritual reflection, and meaningful connections It served as a reminder of the importance of taking time for personal growth and fostering authentic relationships

The lessons and insights gained during this retreat have left a lasting impact on my life, influencing the way I navigate challenges and cherish the moments that make up my journey. I can not wait to continue to “Live the Fourth” and become a Kairos Leader for my class next year!

REGINA AT THE MOVIES

ANYONE BUT YOU

“Anyone but You” is the most heartfelt love comedy of our time With the charming remarks of Glen Powell and the captivating personality of Sydney Sweety, these two icons made a movie of the century. Many funny and comedic things happened but genuine and loving things happened as well to balance out the love-comedy mix The relationship between the two is a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings This movie gives us the highs and lows of the relationship between the two. Although there were many ups and downs within this movie, it all ended with Bea and Ben being in a happy and loving relationship

MEAN GIRLS (2024)

The movie Mean Girls is an iconic movie that was released almost 20 years ago and is still relevant today. They turned this movie into a musical which then made a movie based on the musical There were many mixed reviews on this movie as a whole Many people didn’t even know the movie was a musical until they were in a theater and were quickly surprised from the first scene being a song. The casting team made a great decision of bringing back Renee Rapp from the broadway musical to play Regina George, but that seemed to be one of only good decisions they made in making the film. The film got a lot of backlash saying they didn’t like the modern representation, the music changes they made, and the cuts they had to do from the musical It is hard to see the character Cady played by any other actress besides Lindsay Lohan.Personally I was not a big fan of this movie as a whole, compared to the original movie and the musical they based it on, but we do need to understand how hard it is to remake a version of a movie that is as iconic as Mean Girls is

CRUSHING IT FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK!

This Catholic Schools Week was a blast. This fun-filled week at Regina is an annual celebration of our Catholic education that we are so grateful for Throughout the week, we strive to get closer to God through these competitive and fun themes With the city themes being Malibu for the Freshmen, Hollywood for the Sophomores, New York for the Juniors, and lastly Nashville for the Seniors, city spirit roared down the halls For the week, a new exciting edition was the Secret Dj, where the students had to guess which teacher’s playlist was playing during passing time and the grade with the most guesses was awarded 50 points.

To start off the week we had College Day, then on Tuesday we had Famous Duos or Trios, Wednesday was Music Artist, Thursday being Anything but a Backpack Day, and finally Friday was the choice of wearing your class shirt or dressing up as your city theme By far the most popular day of the week was the Duos/Trios day which was likely because the students got the chance to dress up with their friends and be creative to represent their iconic group. On the contrary, the least popular spirit day was the Music Artist Day which was likely because in this age there are less artists who have a unique style so most students did not even dress up since they had very few options to pick from as far as unique looking musicians.

On Thursday, there was a new twist added to spirit week which was Coin Stalls. The Coin Stalls, which were a fundraising activity that donated to Kids On the Go, raised up to over $1000 which is quite remarkable that our school could raise so much money to such an important cause Another shining new addition was Ms. Gret’s meditation. The meditation was so important because it provided a chance for the students to take a break from their studies and be grounded with a calming relief about the rest of the day The Seniors left victorious on Friday with a total of 700 points at spirit games. So another annual Catholic Schools Day transpired which brought the students even closer to not only one another, but also with God

Dear Regina: College Edition

Q: Any advice for our seniors going off to college next year?

If you are taking Organic Chemistry or any other tough, "weeder" class, get a tutor right at the start. You won't regret it. Join study groups to help as well. Good Luck !

If you ' re interested in medicine, do what a friend of mine did. During the FIRST week of UM freshman year, she shadowed a doctor for a couple of hours a week. She volunteered in a hospital AND she scored a perfect 36 on her mcats They aske her to teach an mcat class!

She hit the ground running. Don't be intimidated by others in the class. They're just as scared as you are. Do your best. Reach for the stars. Don't give up on your dreams, whatever they may be. Regina has taught you that.

Apply to many schools. Search out scholarships based on financial need and non-financial need. Your school librarian can help you look for scholarships Consider going to a community college for your first two years and transferring credits, it is much cheaper and you still graduate from a top university. The total college experience is enlightening, but sometimes you ' ve got to be practical.

Fun fact: a former president of UM, who has a building named after him, flunked, YES FLUNKED, Organic Chemistry at UM. He took the class at Washtenaw Community College and aced it. See what I mean about being flexible?!

New Year, New Goals

Our Regina Saddleites take the saying, “New year, new me ” very seriously, and it is illustrated through their New Year's resolutions. Whether a goal or a mottos to live by, the various intentions set by Regina students provide motivation for all. Junior, Bella Farah hopes to work up the courage to quit her current job at a bakery to pursue options more suited to her lifestyle As general life goals, several students hope to keep their grades up and aim to be happier Perhaps the most inspiring resolution was from Senior, Gabby Fernandez For the remainder of her final high school year and the start of her college career, Gabby is determined to live by, “Don’t let the haters get their way, and always come back like a boomerang.” Here are some more goals and mottos the Saddelites are using to guide their 2024
