OVERVIEW

Beloved NYC rock band Sunflower Bean return reinvigorated with Mortal Primetime, the most hard-fought and vulnerable album of their career. In the three years since their last LP Headful of Sugar, the members of Sunflower Bean - Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, and Olive Faber - drifted from one another as they pursued new projects and confronted personal challenges, tragedies and transformations. But Mortal Primetime – the band’s fourth album, but first self-produced – finds Sunflower Bean with a renewed sense of purpose after nearly losing everything they built together. With mixing by Caesar Edmunds (The Killers, Wet Leg) and engineering by Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties, Boygenius), Sunflower Bean were inspired by alternative rock, dreamy psychedelia, and arena-sized ambition to create a sound that’s undeniably theirs on Mortal Primetime; a record that celebrates their history while hurtling toward the future.

They draw from a wide swath of influences most bands wouldn’t dare namecheck together in a sentence, and that daringness has made them undefinable. “Sometimes I think of this record as Belle and Sebastian meets Alice in Chains,” Julia Cumming says. “In the past, we’ve been told to tone down who we are, and this album is our refusal to be anything but ourselves,” Olive Faber says ,“It’s the purest expression of who we are.” Recording vocals for the album’s power-pop opener and lead single “Champagne Taste,” Cumming channelled Iggy Pop circa The Idiot, whilst later, on “Look What You’ve Done to Me,” her staggering range conjures the unsettling madness and whimsy of Kate Bush. And on “Nothing Romantic,” soaring power cords harken back to arena-ready hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s by Heart, Pat Benatar, or Joan Jett.

Rilo Kiley was born from hunger, from the insatiable desire to write one’s own story. The band’s origins can be traced back to Los Angeles in the late 1990s, when Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett discovered a shared songwriting obsession and began performing together. After some starts and stops, a band was formed with  Pierre “Duke” de Reeder playing bass. They called themselves Rilo Kiley, borrowing a name that came to Sennett in a dream.

For their second record, Rilo Kiley headed to Nebraska to record with Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis alongside new drummer Jason Boesel. Here, Lewis truly becomes a generational songwriter, spinning interior mysteries regarding romance, depression, trauma, hope, and isolation into cathartic revelations. The Execution of All Things was a triumphant arrival.

Originally released in 2002, the celebrated and beloved album The Execution of All Things is a hallmark of indie rock. Hailed by fans and critics alike as an essential component to any record collection. More than twenty years after its initial release, Saddle Creek is releasing The Execution of All Things (Frozen Lake Edition) to enshrine this pivotal indie rock album.

What happens when you combine SUMAC: a band that uses the volume, distortion, and guitar-centric approach of metal to make music that has the malleability of jazz and textural exploration of noise with Moor Mother: a poet and sound artist that has deconstructed hip hop to a point where it’s less about rhyme and rhythm (though obviously both are present in her work) and more about oratorical cadence and power. The Film is an album that takes attributes of both artists’ work and finds common ground in shifting musical patterns, and expressive force. The record is a musical thumbing of their noses at the more traditional approaches of their respective fields, an innovative, powerhouse of an album.

The Film’s moniker speaks to the fact that it is conceived and delivered as a complete album, a full story or narrative. Moor Mother puts it best: “The idea is to create a moment outside of the convention. This is a work of art. Thinking about the work as a Film, instead of an album or a collection of songs. This task is impossible in an industry that wants to force everything into a box of consumption. You won’t understand or get the full picture until the artwork is completed. This work is developing and is requesting more agency within the creative process.” The Film does have clear themes running throughout – again Moor Mother expounds: “the themes are universal in nature - land - displacement - the climate - human rights and freedoms - war and peace - the idea of running away from the many violent forces and horrific systems of man and empire.”

Heavy, holy, hypnotizing – beyond existence, beyond the fettered constraints of normality, past the false notions of the indoctrinated disguised as the organic, planets form; the detritus of cosmic stuff merges into galaxies, into something that can sound like it’s populated by suns. The Film is just such a work, a nebulitic collaboration between SUMAC and Moor Mother.

The Film was recorded at Studio Litho in Seattle with Scott Evans. The album includes appearances by guest vocalists Kyle Kidd, Sovie, and Candice Hoyes. SUMAC and Moor Mother will be playing select dates worldwide together, including a performance at Roadburn Festival just ahead of album release. This double album is packaged in a custom obi designed by Aaron Turner featuring paintings by Turner and art concepts by Moor Mother.

“...like self-perpetuating obstacle courses in hell. Ricocheting between formidable doom and barbed improvisation, Sumac sound preternaturally belligerent.” - Pitchfork, 8.4 Best New Music

“A forcefield for fending off some unseen evil, a testament to metal’s transcendent energy. Sumac makes ecstatic music for a world that can still save itself, if only it would try.” - Bandcamp

“Across eight albums, Moor Mother—aka Camae Ayewa—has bore witness to history’s sins, threading connections between past, present, and future in a sensory overload fusing industrial noise, “witch rap,” and free jazz.” - Pitchfork

“her music sustains a constant, complementary tension between the hushed, folkloric mantras and defiant Afrofuturist litanies she shares, her sound drawing freely from noise, jazz, blues and beats while respecting the practice of each mode.” - The Guardian

THRILL JOCKEY

BIG|BRAVE’s preternatural instincts and depth of skill as musicians are on full display on their most naked and austere record to date, OST. The trio entered the studio with broader concepts and themes in mind, but no preconceived music. The overarching concept was to make a film score for a film that had yet to be created, to use minimal instrumentation, or more specifically not their standard band instruments, and to improvise within these parameters. “Although this record could stand on its own, we envisioned it being paired with moving images, which introduced a fresh and exciting way of working,” notes guitarist Mathieu Ball. In addition to forgoing their usual instrumentation, they notably built their own. Ball created a stringed instrument using piano strings simply called “The Instrument”. This instrument ended up becoming a central figure to the OST’s sound. Guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie adds: “The strings Mathieu used for his instrument came from a discarded piano thatch that had been laying around in the hallway of my tattoo studio for ages.” The Instrument’s presence is felt throughout the record as a conductive element amplifying the album’s earthly, grounded nature.

OST was fully written and recorded in the studio. The band was free to enter the live room and record a take with whatever instrument was at hand. Once they had a good foundation for a song, Ball, Wattie, drummer Tasy Hudson and even engineer/producer Seth Manchester would each build on it, layering takes, from instrumental improvisations to abstract vocals, until they felt it was a completed piece. Wattie’s voice seamlessly blends with the instrumental flourishes made from “The Instrument”, a Wurlitzer, prepared piano, synths and a very limited amount of electric guitar. Additionally, there is a sprinkling of flute by Melissa Guion (MJ Guider). The performances of each player are tactile and ardent, even at their most subtle and effected.

Following OST’s completion, BIG|BRAVE contacted director/ visual artist Stacy Lee to visually score the record. Director Lee and BIG|BRAVE, having previously collaborated, had established an artistic understanding which allowed BIG|BRAVE to give Lee no instruction, no limitations: the creative process synthesized across film and music. Select screenings with live performances are in the works.

BIG|BRAVE will be touring In US and Europe throughout the Spring.

“A record that twists the listener’s expectations from high and low volume.” - The Quietus, best of 2024

“Since their inception in 2012, Big Brave have amplified the torrential sound of clawing oneself into being.” - The Guardian

“one of the most punishing and prolific bands in the contemporary avant-metal landscape” - Pitchfork

Somewhere in the ether/net of our collective social cosmos soup floats the magical, masterful pop music of Magdalena Bay, the duo from Los Angeles composed of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. While the pair may claim California as its terra firma, its true home is in the clouds, from where the two emit and output the unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness, and bombastically warped neo-hooks for which the group has become celebrated. Transmitting in both the audio and video realms, Magdalena Bay is an entity adroitly suited for these times, caught in a haze of the known and felt while pushing sonic landscapes woven with the now into the next.

Having met as teenagers in a high school music program in their hometown of Miami (Tenebaum having moved to Florida at age 1 from Buenos Aires), each quickly recognized a kismet and kindred spirit in the other, resulting in the formation of a band, the prog outfit Tabula Rasa, as well as a romance. Lewin was a self-styled guitar shredder armed with his dad’s prog and concept rock records — The Wall, The Bends, Genesis, Fiona Apple — while Tenenbaum was a pianist and singer dipping toes in indie (Modest Mouse) and emo (My Chemical Romance) rock as well as pop made by princesses (Shakira, Britney). Both could read music and Lewin had even studied music theory, also teaching himself how to produce, record, and mix while making two Tabula Rasa records. The pair took a brief break from dating and headed to different colleges but kept the band together, often trading eight-hour bus rides from Penn to Northeastern and vice versa to rehearse, before eventually realizing two things: one, their relationship was too real to be denied, and two, no one young likes prog.

“It was like, ‘No one's listening to our prog music, what a shame,’” Tenebaum says with a laugh. “We were excited to try something different. So we got into the mechanics of ‘what does it mean to write a pop song?’ and ‘what is this craft?’ and that was the beginning of Magdalena Bay.”

“I remember thinking, ‘Pop music is simple, so we should be able to make it,’” Lewin says. “And then, of course, there's way more to it, lots of complexities in the writing and production that I wasn't aware of. We had no artistic perspective at that point because we were still figuring out the genre and how to make something that resembled pop music before we could think about how we could make it interesting. So that was our early process.”

Holding tight to that all-encompassing genre descriptor (“We make pop, but what really is pop anyway?” Tenenbaum asks, while Lewin counters, “We're a pop group making pop music; all the rest is implied…I think it's fun to imply that pop music is a wide range of things”), the duo released a grip of EPs and singles before launching its debut album Mercurial World in the fall of 2021. Many outlets, while uniformly praising its melodic hooks, sing-song vocals, and meticulously-crafted production, called it “synth-pop,” which is probably the most specific subgenre Lewin and Tenenbaum will allow. Regardless, the mark had been made, and Magdalena Bay soon began to gather respect, adulation, and fans in the true currency of the day: streaming numbers, social media followers, support slots, festival appearances, and creative collabs. All the while, aided by its highly stylized online aesthetic and internet presence, the band was inching closer to realizing something of an artistic perspective after all.

“We love extending the world of our music past sound into videos or a website or graphics or whatever it might be,” Tenenbaum says. “We like to think of them as one and the same, but I think it has to start with the music,” Lewin says. “We're trying to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it.”

“It's the jumping off point that inspires the rest,” Tenenbaum agrees. “But as the years have gone by, as we’ve made more and more videos and such, the process has become more integrated. We were having visual ideas, which was never the case before. I guess people call it ‘world-building.’

MARIA SOMERVILLE Luster

By the time Irish musician Maria Somerville started writing Luster, her landmark label debut for 4AD, she had lived away from her native Connemara for quite some time. Having grown up amongst the wild, mountainous terrain of Galway’s rural west coast, she later relocated to Dublin, where she patiently developed an atmospheric dream pop signature inspired by the landscape of her youth – a spellbinding soundworld of gusting ambient electronics, ethereal guitar strums, sparse percussion, and hushed lyrical vignettes. In 2019, this culminated in All My People, a self-released LP steeped in reverb, nostalgia and a yearning for home that won praise from discerning press and listeners alike.

It was upon returning to Connemara, in a house near where she was raised overlooking one of the country’s largest lakes, Lough Corrib, that work commenced on the songs that would eventually become Luster, an album that illuminates Somerville’s music anew, pushing it forward in both sound and spirit. Where All My People conveyed memories and melancholic longing with misty slowcore balladry, these 12 tracks show us an artist who’s more assured in the path her life has taken, and the person she’s become in the process. As she sings in ‘Trip’ – “I can see more clearly than I could before. I know now what’s true for me.

With the release of Luster, she has signaled the arrival of a new era that will see her play around the world in 2025 accompanied by a live band. Rest assured though, no matter where Somerville goes, she’ll take a piece of home with her – a living, breathing, timeless essence you can sense in every note, as clear as the air by the Corrib.

“‘Projections’ is a woozy piece of dream-pop, and it’s got Somerville singing sleepily over spaced-out guitars. It’s awfully pretty, and it’s the first piece of music that she’s released on 4AD.”

– Stereogum

“An echo that lasts long into the hours after you first hear it”

– The Fader

BUNNIES –Horror Spectrum

With Horror Spectrum, Bunnies plunges headfirst into the shadowy abyss of their art-rock multiverse, unearthing sounds that slither, shimmer, and scream. Equal parts psychedelic hallucination, krautrock ritual, and noise rock exorcism, this record feels like the sonic aftermath of mad scientists summoning ghosts through an analog synthesizer they excavated from a cursed tomb. It's less an album and more an experiment gone deliciously wrong—a séance that channels the chaotic energies of dimensions better left untouched.

From the extraterrestrial pulsations of “Eyer of Ire” to the technicolor bliss of “That Evil Ghoul,” Horror Spectrum is a seven-track odyssey that detonates the boundaries of Bunnies’ already unhinged catalog. These tracks drag you by the ankles into realms where sound has teeth, time melts into warped rainbows, and the music feels like it’s plotting something sinister. Few bands dare to tread where Bunnies boldly hop, but here they are, mapping out mythical soundscapes with the glee of cartographers lost in their own creation.

This freakish entity of a record is profoundly unsettling and weirdly exhilarating. Horror Spectrum is the sound of a band digging deep into their subconscious and inviting you to get lost in the labyrinth. Will you find your way out? And if it sounds this good, why not just stay?

Matt McBane Buoy

‘Buoy’ is an album of patterns and ambiance for synthesizers and violin by composer, electronicmusicianandviolinist, Matt McBane.

It is his first primarily electronic album and first entirely solo album on which he plays a variety of analog synthesizers (modular and fixed), violin, piano and bass guitar, and manipulates it all in his computer. While this album marks a new development in McBane’s work, it is rooted in many of the same musical currents as his past music – the patterns and processes of classical minimalism, the sonic manipulation of electronic music, the elemental qualities of fiddle music, emotional nuance, cinematic space, counterpoint, atmosphere–allfilteredthroughthevoltagesofhissynthesizers.

It is the follow-up to his 2022 album on Cantaloupe Music for percussion and synthesizer, ‘Bathymetry’, called an album of the year by Wilco, an album of the month by Bandcamp, and “a musical and sensory journey like no other that has been offered in contemporarymusicrecently”byMontreal’sPanM360.

CHUCK JOHNSON

The Cinder Grove, Precession

STREET DATE: April 25, 2025

Acclaimed Cosmic Americana pedal steel luminary Chuck Johnson released a series of acclaimed titles with the VDSQ label from 2017 to 2021. Two of those physical titles, The Cinder Grove and Precession, recently came into Johnson’s possession and are now distributed by Redeye through Three Lobed Recordings. A perfect opportunity to grab copies of these lavishly presented titles which somewhat slipped under the pandemic radar.

The New York Times – “A eulogy for landscapes that are still being razed, but holds on to hope for what comes next.”

SALES POINTS

• Limited quantities of two titles previously released by VDSQ. Available now through Redeye.

• “The Cinder Grove” was pressed to 120g black vinyl by RTI and packaged within spot-varnished Stoughton tip-on jackets.

• “Precession” presented within pro-pressed cassettes.

PRAISE FOR “THE CINDER GROVE”

“The Cinder Grove embeds sense memories, walls and trees enduring in intangible anonymity.” - Pitchfork

“Hints of Reichian minimalism, spacey Tangerine Dream kosmische, Eno-esque ambience and hypnotic New Age.” - Uncut

“Chuck Johnson's The Cinder Grove is a positively gripping experience from start to finish, full of tones and zones that spark the imagination and encourage deep listening to every note, every descending chord progression, every solar flare melody.” - Aquarium Drunkard

The follow-up to Johnson’s acclaimed Balsams LP, The Cinder Grove delves further into the compositional possibilities of the pedal steel guitar. This halcyon collection of tracks draws on a wider palette of sounds, adding strings and piano, to dive deeper into the sound bath of Johnson’s meditative music.

The Cinder Grove is a profound, affecting statement on the nature of loss and irreplaceability as well as a major addition to the canon of Johnson’s work. It's a suite of requiems for lost places. Many of the spaces that once fostered affordable living and creative work now only exist in sonic memory, like the echoes of ghosts. Like much of the California landscape in recent years, some of these spaces have succumbed to fire. Others, to the equally inexorable forces of gentrification. While his 2017 LP Balsams was intended to provide the listener with a space for respite and calm even healing The Cinder Grove seeks to remember what has been lost while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit and the natural world.

NOTES ON “PRECESSION”

Recorded in September 2018, Precession is a bridge between Johnson’s acclaimed album Balsams and its follow-up The Cinder Grove Notes from Chuck:

“'Nodal' features something that I would often mix into my live set during that time: a pre-recorded organ improvisation which was later used as the main track in “Raz-de-Marée” on The Cinder Grove. The organ provided a useful metric grounding and harmonic element for the steel guitar to interact with. I would often follow that section with a very exposed passage for the steel, as I do here on 'Axial'. With the loops and effects lowered in the mix I would improvise within the restrictions of Arvo Pärt’s 'tintinnabuli' harmonic language.

The chiming effect, plaintive chords, and relative silence compared to the density of other parts of my set would help me to re-center during a performance, and to exist very much on each note, within each moment. I would revisit this harmonic palette in the composition “Red Branch Bell,” which I consider to be the centerpiece of The Cinder Grove.

TOTALITY NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY & BITCHIN BAJAS

Street Date: April 25, 2025

NO SALES TO EU, UK, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, SELL EVERYWHERE ELSE WITH TOTALITY

Years past the space time of Automaginary, Bitchin Bajas and Natural Information Society have reported back at last from beyond. If the new title doesn’t clue you, Totality brings good news. Since their first collaboration, the pathways that lead from Natural Information Society ’s ecstatic all-world jazz to Bitchin Bajas’ microtonal soundscapes have grown ever finer in their articulation. Across the spectrum, the septet balance a deeply searching mood with wonderfully in-pocket production feel. This makes for collective aural transport of the highest order to all those listening in.

In the time since their 2015 first convergence, the Natural Information Society have released four albums (one in collaboration with Evan Parker, one with Ari Brown) and Bitchin Bajas five (one a soundtrack, one with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, one featuring the songs of Sun Ra). Given the multivarious paths both groups have traveled, it makes sense that their second convergence seems to emanate from centuries, eons beyond or below some undefinable elsewhere from their first. Totality is that.

These days, Natural Information Society is populated differently. From the sextet NIS that co-created Automaginary, Joshua Abrams, Lisa Alvarado and Mikel Patrick Avery remain. In the stead of the departed former players is Jason Stein on bass clarinet. This might account for some mere impression of aspects of time, space and evolution to be found here but then again, Bitchin Bajas flow on in their long-standing trio configuration (Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan, Rob Frye), so the “people in the room” theory of how Totality ever got this way will only take us so far.

available from Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas:

Recorded in a single day with Greg Norman at Chicago’s Electrical Audio, then slowly considered into the finished record we hear here, Totality is a sweet-tempered second child. It experiences time in ways the first kid didn’t. If you’re in it for slow-shifting trance formations, it’s gonna be cool. There’s lots here for you, lots of simmering time and synth atmospheres dappled with radiant woodwinds but there’s some head-snapping hypno-rhythms that stand apart from the groove energies of the first one. It’s just natural facts: two different days in time separated by years, with the experience of several live encounters between the two groups in between. Beyond that, only the music can say anything else. That said, here are a few thoughts from this listener’s log

The low-key revolutionary thump of “Nothing Does Not Show” and “Clock no Clock” notwithstanding, Totality charts impressive new launch angles from NIS & BB’s improvisatory heart, with their careful listening and response time continually redefining the space in a relaxed manner that rewards deep zoners. Additionally, their blended corps assimilate marvelously on Abrams’ composition, “Always 9 Seconds Away.” Here, and with the aforementioned groovers, the collective resonates beyond familiar kraut/spiritual/minimal power lines, bringing new time conceptions to bear in the always-expansive space of this album event.

It's about time we got back to the singularly-divined space of Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas with Totality. That's the best way to way to define this new music it’s about time.

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY has had more than its share of out-of-nowhere bands following from the second big bang that was punk rock. The Babylon Dance Band, Circle X, Your Food, Squirrel Bait, Bastro…these are but some of the exceptional music acts originating in Louisville after 1977. Now it’s time for the great secret of the Louisville first-wave punk scene to be revealed: The Endtables

The Endtables were the crazed brainchild of guitarist Alex Durig, brooding chess-master of the amplified freak-out, and singer Steve Rigot, a flamboyant transgender giant from the shores of southern Indiana who reinvented himself as a Warhol Factory superstar. Like Scarlett O’Hara wrapped in a green velvet curtain, Rigot crafted his own glamorous reality from what was available in the blasted cultural landscape of 1970’s Kentucky. Gold spray paint, duct tape, Ace bandages ... a spectacularly other trailblazer who caused folks to toss their received ideas of beauty and go with the new thing instead.

No Export to Europe; All Other Sales Around the World Will Be Appreciated (by the World)

The band first took the stage in late 1978 and was finished by the summer of 1980. In the fall of 1979 they recorded six tracks at a Louisville studio, four of which came out on a 7” EP on their own Tuesday Records. The two remaining tracks (“White Glove Test” and “Trick or Treat”) were issued as a single on Self Destruct records in 1991. Both records are among the rarest of any American punk release — more sought after than seen, passed on disintegrating cassette tapes and shouted over upon impact.

The music of The Endtables is another chapter in pure American weirdness, as jaw-locking today as the day it was recorded. The scent of modern can be detected in Steve Rigot’s remote vocalese, set against Alex Durig’s guitar outbursts, while drummer Steven Jan Humphrey and bassist Albert Durig (age fifteen!) supply frenzied rhythm. The band rocks its fevered vision to a ferocious degree while Rigot grimly rhymes the truths that remained locked out of the public’s pop tastes in ’79 –’80. Thirty years of rap and roll later, The Endtables seem inevitable.

Yes, it’s been a little over thirty years since the original EP’s release. The cover of The Endtables replicates the original Tuesday records 7” cover, with its early-wave punk glory intact. The vinyl version is a six-song blast, short and sweet, the complete studio recordings. The CD adds six previously-unreleased live tracks, and never-before-seen video footage of the band in performance. The studio tracks are mastered from the original tapes, recently discovered in a basement in Louisville’s South End. The package also includes previously unpublished photos that convey the seedy chaos that was the band’s métier, along with extensive liner notes and Steve Rigot’s lyrics. Sing along!

SELLING POINTS

• This release comprises the first appearance on vinyl of the complete studio recordings of The Endtables, all in one place.

• The Endtables were a legend among first-wave Louisville punk bands circa 1979 — peers of Circle X and the Babylon Dance Band.

• Liner notes by Wink O’Bannon, David Grubbs, Tara Key, and Paul Belker.

• Press coverage for The Entables is a no-brainer. And when it happens, you gotta have this in your punk section!

As many Scots from both Highlands and Lowlands have done before them, musicians Màiri Morrison and Alasdair Roberts made the long journey over the ocean to Canada in June 2023. However, theirs was not a perilous sea voyage, nor a permanent relocation; rather it was for a transatlantic collaboration instigated by Nova Scotian bass player and musical arranger Pete Johnston. The trip resulted in a new album, Remembered in Exile: Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia, Màiri and Alasdair’s long-overdue second album together following 2012’s critically acclaimed Urstan. The album’s title is an allusion to John Lorne Campbell’s book Songs Remembered in Exile, a collection of songs of Scottish Gaelic origin found in Cape Breton and Antigonish County, Nova Scotia.

The Soldier’s Adieu

Featuring ten traditional Canadian songs with Scottish roots, Remembered in Exile draws heavily on the pioneering work of Nova Scotian folklorist Helen Creighton, who collected a vast amount of traditional song material on Canada’s eastern seaboard. The album’s songs are drawn from Creighton’s published works including Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia and Gaelic Songs in Nova Scotia. They are musical artifacts of the westward journey undertaken by Scottish fishers, crofters, merchants and their families as they migrated — willingly or otherwise — to Canada from the 1600s to the mid-1800s.

A native of the Isle of Lewis, Màiri takes the lead on a handful of Gaelic language songs, mostly collected in Cape Breton, while Alasdair leads on some Canadian variants of the types of Scots ballads for which he has become well known. There are also a couple of ‘macaronic’ songs in both English and Gaelic. Anchored around Pete’s steadfast bass playing and sensitive arrangements, as well as Alasdair ’s guitar work, the songs are further enlivened by the skills of a fine group of players: Sarah Frank on fiddle, Jake Oelrichs on drums, Mike Smith on banjo and Andrew Killawee on harmonium. Produced by Pete Johnston and Mike Smith at Fang Recording in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Remembered in Exile is by turns genial and playful, sombre and brooding. It constitutes a fine and fitting follow-up to Màiri and Alasdair ’s first album together, charting new waters and reforging the longstanding bond between old Scotland and Nova Scotia.

Kassian - Channels

With their debut album Channels on !K7 Records, Kassian (Joe Danvers-McCabe and Warren Cummings) have come full circle, focusing on the warmer, sample-based, and house-inspired sonics that brought them together. Kassian periodically revisited these initial pieces throughout the last five years until they felt able to journey deeper, using theirrapidlydevelopingcraftandrefinedproduction techniquestobuild a debut album that momentarily steps away from some of their more club-focused excursions.“Aswewerewriting, werealizedthatall the tracks had the unique potential to tell a story,” reflectsCummings, with Channels leadingthelistener through a series of different atmospheres and emotionalterrains.

Essential to Channels is Kassian’s focus on time’s abilitytoreorienthumanperspective.Kassianworked on the album over an extended period, with instrumentation, fieldrecordings, andpercussionfirst constructed and then subsequently stripped away andrefined.

Channels contains their early love of tube warm, sample based sounds and live instrumentation as the foundation for this album. The working process for these rippling pieces used both sequenced workflow and improvisational arrangement, live instrumentation inspired by an array of deeper emotional content. Both members of Kassian experiencedgreatpersonallossduringtheperiodof making this album, and a tenderness is felt throughouttherecord.

This record is an earthy thing, its naturalistic track names evoking recognisable and cyclically familiar moments, Kassian have provided a map for the listener at the forefronts of their minds. Channels features Ezra Collective’s Joe Armon-Jones on keys, and Timothy Kraemer on cello distilling this body of workintoa deep stream between the organic and improvised, and the sequenced andplanned.

Demilitarizefollows Nazar’s remarkable 2020 debut Guerrilla , which reprocessed Angolan kuduro music with rough textures, field recordings and media clips, telling a personal story of the civil war that exiled his family to Europe, while his father, a rebel General, fought a losing battle in the jungle back home. After Guerrilla , and an extended period of serious illness, now Demilitarizeis motivated by a reckoning with mortality and the flowering of new love, turning the ‘rough kuduro’ of Guerrillainside out.

This is a deep sound world, genuinely dreamy, the arc of the album describing shedding the armour of trauma and surrendering to this new situation. A constant and unexpected aspect of Demilitarizeis Nazar's gentle, submerged vocal. Insistent and mantra-like, it’s like a cross between Elisabeth Frazer, Arthur Russell and Frank Ocean, and the music is fragile and opaque in response. The rhythms of kuduro are still here, but move around his voice like fish around a swimmer, while precise sound design illuminates from different angles. Chords spiral, ripple and shoot through the beats giving tracks the loosest of settings; songs disassemble; vocals float off-centre.

Justin Sullivan has been living something of an artistic double life for the last 8 years. He’s been playing drums in Los Angeles’ Flat Worms and getting back together with his NYC bandmates in The Babies, but he’s also been crafting his own songs under the name Night Shop. Under this moniker, Sullivan has released two LPs and two 12” EPs and toured supporting, Widowspeak, Shannon Lay and Waxahatchee.

Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield once described Sullivan as “a well-read modern day Buddy Holly” and on his new record, The Beloved Returns, he raises the bar of both the literary allusions and the rock’n’roll. The record’s title track was inspired by Thomas Manns’s 1939 fictionalized biography of Goethe titled Lotte in Weimar: The Beloved Returns and themes of desire, obsession and the places they send you are all over the record. On the sonic end, the record is louder and faster than any Night Shop record before, a result of Sullivan’s collaboration with the Summer Cannibals’ Jessica Bourdeaux who produced the record, with songs like the opener “Ode To Joy II” coming fast out of the gate quickly followed by “Let Me Be the Lamb.”

Swedish band MAD INVASION (featuring Mikkey Dee, Scorpions) combine classic 70’s/80’s hard rock with a contemporary sound – delivering a distinct and different listening experience that makes them stand out. The long background of the band members as musicians, songwriters and performing artists, adds a final layer of shine to the musical landscape.

MAD INVASION released their debut album in 2021, entitled ’Edge Of The World’, an album that offered a wide range of heavy songs with bone-crushing guitars, airy keyboards, and a dynamic rythm section. The new album ’Crack In The Sky’, provides an even heavier and tighter display of thunderous arrangement and melodies –building further on the already distinctive MAD INVASION sound.

Join the MAD INVASION journey and rediscover the golden age of rock – in a new suit of armour.

"Fimbulvinter" by Bjørn Riis: A JourneyThrough Darkness and Light

Named after thelegendary longwinter that heralds Ragnarok,a time of both destruction andrebirth. BjørnRiis’new album Fimbulvinter is aprofoundand deeply personalwork.Drawingfromhis own experiences with anxiety, Bjørnexplores themes of hopelessness, paranoia, and despair, ultimately finding a spark of hope and gratitude in thedarkness. “This isn’tanautobiographicalalbum,” Bjørn explains,“but I wanted toshareparts of my own journey and address a subjectthat I feel is both deeply important and stillsomewhat taboo.”

Musically, Fimbulvinter reflects Bjørn’s diverse influences, blending the atmospheric and introspective tones of progressiverock with the energy andswagger of thehardrock bands he grew up with inthe early ’80s.Fans of Kiss,Black Sabbath, andclassic progressive acts willfind much to love inthe album’s richsoundscapes. Fromthe driving, anthemic energy of “Gone” -a track made for blasting on the open road -to moments of introspection and monumental heaviness,Fimbulvinteris a dynamic journey through darkness and light.

Bjørntakes centrestage on the album, performing all instruments and vocals, whilealso enlisting contributions from talented collaborators, including Henrik Bergan Fossum (Airbag),Arild Brøter (Pymlico) and Kai Christoffersen on drums. Longtime partner andco-producer Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes alsoreturns, ensuring the album’s production is as impeccable as its compositions.

With Fimbulvinter, BjørnRiis onceagain demonstrates why he is a cornerstone of the progressive rock scene, delivering music thatis as emotionally resonant as it is sonically captivating.

«No sign of Rotten Leaves» is Selma French’s second album and draws inspiration from life’s paradoxes.

Selma French is a songwriter and musician renowned and revered within the Norwegian folk scene. She grew up with traditional music and has played and created music all her life. Her musical inspirations include Linda Perhacs, Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Frøkedal, Sundfør and Sandy Denny

Her debut album Changes Like the Weather in the Mountain was released in 2022 to critical acclaim and was ranked among the top Norwegian albums of 2022 by notable Norwegian newspapers such as Dagsavisen and Aftenposten. In the fall of 2024, she did a lot of touring in the UK together with Euros Childs (Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci / Teenage Fanclub).

Selma has also toured extensively throughout Scandinavia and is a member of the bands such as Masåva, Frøkedal & Familien - (with whom she toured in the UK as special guests of Teenage Fanclub), Sondre Lerche and Norwegian Grammy award winners Morgonrode Her music is widely recognized in her native country and has recently featured as the theme song in the hit T.V series Furia.

Her music reflects an admiration for Norwegian and English folk music and is infused with an airy, enigmatic energy. Her rich landscape of guitars, wurlitzer, fiddles and high pitched choir voices manages to convey a roar of frustration, obscure portraits of the present and a gathering force of hope.

«I walked down the street I live in and looked at the ground. There was not a single trace of what season we were in. It is a paradox to fight for nature, while feeling further from it than ever.

-Selma

The album was recorded and mixed by Bård Ingebrigtsen in Amper Tone. The music is produced by Selma French, Bård and the band. Music and lyrics were written by Selma French at Rena, in Oslo and at Hemnes in Norway during 2023.

HospitalII

Tough Love

HOSPITAL II is the product of one evening and several years of friendship. Kevin Linn (Sad Eyed Beatniks, Present Electric) who runs Paisley Shirt Records, a mostly tape label in San Francisco, was releasing Present Electric S/T. He needed a bonus cassette to go with it, since he always sends one out with an official release. He asked his friends Mike Ramos (Tony Jay, Flowertown) and Karina Gill (Cindy, Flowertown) to come over and see what they could make together in the space of an evening. In a semi-soundproofed room in Kevin's basement, every surface is occupied with an instrument, a pile of tapes, collage materials, or a tape playing or recording device. Karina brought her yard sale Casio to contribute. The collection that came out of this evening is all impromptu Kevin, Mike and Karina picking up different instruments and making up songs that often riff on shared experiences, like Mike's tendency to keep counting during a sound check or the plight of Kevin's pet snail or Karina's tendency to get cold during basement practices. So, the collection here was a lighthearted night of improvisation growing out of years of making music together and separately including the apocryphal HOSPITAL I. Tough Love are now releasing that collection of songs on vinyl, alongside an additional 7" which contains four previously unheard recordings from that same fruitful night. HOSPITAL II is released on 7th March as a 12" & 7" set in an edition of 250

The Gentle Spring are a new group, formed by Michael Hiscock, Emilie Guillaumot and Jérémie Orsel. Michael has an illustrious pop history, having been a founder member of The Field Mice, possibly the most beloved band on Sarah Records in the 1990s. And with The Gentle Spring, it seems that history is repeating itself… When Michael and his friend Bobby Wratten formed The Field Mice, the two of them very quickly created a set of songs whose emotional honesty, raw guitars and perfect pop melodies pierced the hearts of a generation of indiepop fans, kids who were unmoved by the posturing of mainstream indie, and who didn’t want to spend time in fields dancing at 24-hour raves. The Field Mice were the band who defined the meaning and the spirit of Sarah Records. Defiantly in love with pop, defiantly un-macho, defiantly… sensitive. And now, remarkably, Michael has done it again. With his new musical partner Emilie, The Gentle Spring have created a fresh new iteration of indiepop music. Once again, the songs are unafraid of raw emotions, brutally honest and is still in love with big pop melodies. They are still…. sensitive. But life is seen through a different lens now. There is wisdom, there is experience, and there is the ability to look back at the world with a mixture of regret and joy. These are very adult songs, and the arrangements reflect this. Rich acoustic guitars and Emilie’s haunting keyboard have replaced hectic drum machines and urgent distortion. And there is a third element to this music. Jérémie Orsel’s sophisticated guitar adds textures and melodies that give these songs a real depth, while maintaining an enigmatic distance, never quite overwhelming the vocal line. So things are clearer now. But feelings are just as strong. The pain of unrequited love that made Field Mice songs so poignant hasn’t gone away

Scorched Jerusalem confronts the historic-political issues of the last several years head-on, and if you haven’t noticed we're in a mess. The album’s first side is beyond grim, mixing an almost Adrian Sherwood / Mark Stewart-style production to some of singer Johny Brown's starkest urgent lyrics in over forty years of recording. Although it feels as if the band has picked startling moments from the last decade-and-a-half or so (one song references Anders Behring Breivik's mass murder outside Oslo in 2011), there are moments - generally found on the second half - where the band's instinctive grace & beauty power past the pain and brutality - French Riots sounds almost joyful, Palace Commune scales the top tier of BOHJ's tower of majestic beauty, while When The Tulips Bloom The War Will End, with the sound of a Weimar-era waltz, as if to remind us of what lies behind us also lies ahead. We can't overstate the importance and brilliance of this album, and especially its relevance to the utter crap the world's going through at the moment. Johny and the band offer no solutions beyond "simple faith in people" (in the closing track), and only a liar would have you believe there's much more to count on than that . . . if we've even got that.

LP FIKA106LP 2025-04-25 5057998867240

Mirrored Daughters - an album of lo-fi folk-pop and explorative woodland meditations from members of Firestations, The Leaf Library & Marlody. Bright-eyed, melodic music inspired by travels in Epping Forest as much as it was by spontaneous collaboration, these 11 tracks deliver an intriguing journey through (and beyond) the forest - crystal clear melancholy interspersed with benign drone rituals. The music on their self-titled debut takes a step away from the widescreen production of the artists’ other groups and instead revels in the instinctive, warm tones of acoustic instruments; guitars, cellos, clarinet, a harmonium and bells providing the earthy sonic environment for these spacious songs. Starting out as quickly-recorded acoustic guitar and bass pieces by Lewis Young (Leaf Library drummer) they were then taken up by Mike Cranny (guitarist and singer in fellow Walthamstow travellers Firestations), cellist Hannah Reeves and additional Leaf Library member Matt Ashton. Each added parts remotely, engineered in their home studios, before singer Marlody brought her crystalline voice to the music; layered harmonies and twisting, looping phrases that tie the story together. Alongside these sketches were Lewis’s trips to the forest with a train of bells and a battered old violin, all dragged through mud, fallen leaves and brambles to create otherworldly yet natural sounds - music that sounds like it’s sprung from the forest floor. Lewis likens this ritual to “uncovering music that’s always been… a summoning of spirit folk, used to appearing in autumn, taking a pilgrimage through forests with joy and frivolity. A Miyazaki-meets-Chaucer kinda vibe.”

ANTOINE CORRIVEAU OISEAU DE NUIT

The genesis of Oiseau de Nuit includes a host of imagined lives. By drawing from them, and from each era of the lives of these characters, Antoine Corriveau makes them collide, multiply and merge into each other, until they become one. How do you write about what’s growing deep inside you, which you chose not to express until now? It’s there, in the middle of the knot, that several invisible forms of violence stick out, burrowed into the flesh, which can lead to a need for dissociation, a powerful desire to become another, a double, a new being, to get past the imprint of the dark. Traps and distractions abound; affectless sexuality, camouflage, compensation, journeys into the void, multiple small deaths, escape throughout time and space, resurrection. During the creative process, recollection mingles with projection, and the lines between parallel lives and memories blur.

CAR SEAT HEADREST

The Scholars

The first studio album from Car Seat Headrest in five years, ‘The Scholars.’

From Shakespeare to Mozart to classical opera, Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo pulled from the classics when devising the lyrics and story arc of ‘The Scholars,’ while the music draws, carefully, from classic rock story song cycles such as The Who’s ‘Tommy’ and David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust.’ “One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot,” Toledo notes. “I didn’t want to sacrifice that to make a very fluid narrative. And so this is sort of a middle ground where each song can be a character and it’s like each one is coming out on center stage and they have their song and dance.”

While Car Seat Headrest started as Toledo’s solo project, the four-piece is now fully a band. “What we’ve been doing more of in recent years is just taking the pulses of each other.” says Toledo. “It didn’t really feel to me like things got in sync in an inner feeling way until this record, with that internal communal energy. And it’s become that band feeling for me in a much more realized way. That’s been a big journey.”

It is a journey that listeners will want to embark on again and again as they absorb and discover the rich depths and clanging resonances of ‘The Scholars.’

JENNY HVAL

Iris Silver Mist

Iris Silver Mist is the new album by Norwegian musician, writer and artist Jenny Hval. Named after the fragrance by Serge Lutens with the same name, the album too moves like a perfume—between flower and smoke, ghostly yet alive.

The album didn’t start with music, but with its absence. When live music disappeared during the pandemic, Jenny Hval was left with a void that was hard to pinpoint until she found herself drawn to perfume. Smelling and collecting, reading and writing: she put away the music, and surrounded herself with the notes and accords of fragrances instead. It was only later that she understood why: she was searching for another way to sense presence, to fill the emptiness music had left behind. When she eventually returned to making music, each song was infused with smells.

Many of the songs on Iris Silver Mist were created as a mixtape, as one continuous flow of ideas. Before the songs were recorded, they were performed like this, as long, shapeshifting pieces, as part of the interdisciplinary piece I want to be a Machine. The album has kept this feeling of one song seeping into the next. “It is about moving,” Jenny says about the album, but she means it in a more symbiotic way. Moving into the sound, as one song turns into the next, as she turns into the music, and her perfume does so, too.

Iris Silver Mist is a record about the stage, the music and how it can change us. About the things that touch us, change us, and settle on or under our skin.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

SECRET SUPERSTAR

SOUNDS

Scraping Bubblegum Off My Soul 1977-80

Punk * Powerpop * New Wave * DIY

2nd May 2025

Soul Jazz Records’ new Secret Superstar Sounds brings together a wealth of incredibly catchy tunes from late-70s/early-80s British groups that you have probably never heard of! Powerpop mixed together a love of lyrical and melodically beautiful 60s pop and garage sounds, together with the energy and attitude of 70s punk. Almost completely out of kilter with the fashions of the day (punk, new wave and post-punk) these bands managed to fall between the musical cracks at almost every step of the way – leaving them practically unknown to all but a few.

Inspired by the D-I-Y messaging of bands like The Desperate Bicycles, Sniffing Glue fanzine and early UK punk labels like Stiff, Chiswick and Rough Trade, these bands chose mainly to go into a studio and make their own private press/D-I-Y records themselves – then try to work out everything else (promotion, marketing, etc) afterwards. As mainly outsiders to the mainstream music industry, and usually unable to make any inroads into it, save for sending their own record to John Peel, most of these bands fell at the first hurdle.

These records remain both beautifully crafted 3-minute musical gems, and long-lost microhistories of an essentially hidden genre.

Featured bands here include The Squares, The Meanies, The Monitors, Plummet Airline, Tours, Gobblinz, Krypton Tunes and more. Most of these records were self-published D-I-Y releases made in very limited-editions and were often the only tracks ever released by these groups.

Aaron Neville is the third oldest of the four Neville Brothers. The brothers were catapulted to international stardom when they started recording together in 1977, although by this point Aaron had spent the last 17 years building up a substantial catalogue of quality soul and funk. Much of this had been recorded under Allen Toussaint’s guidance for Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn’s Sansu Enterprises. The 22 tracks on this disc represent the best recordings he made for Sansu between 1969 and the formation of The Neville Brothers in 1977. The bonus tracks include tracks that recorded around the same period and 3 newer versions of Neville classics. n 22 TRACKS - THE MOST COMPLETE PACKAGE OF THE TOUSSAINT ERA n

their short-lived career, this double album compiles the Clinger Sisters’ singles and previously unreleased material – from early doo-wop to rock ‘n’ roll!

In the mid ‘60s, rock ‘n’ roll was almost exclusively a man’s world. The Clingers, four Mormon sisters, dared to challenge the pre-conceived notion that rock music was a dark and dangerous place that had little space for women. The Clingers' angelic beauty, shining harmonies, uncompromising virtue and ferocious ambition were a light in the often-tumultuous Los Angeles music industry. They attracted top music produc- ers excited about the possibility of some- thing new and unheard. It also attract- ed those who sought to exploit their talent and take advantage of their naivete.

By 1966, the Clingers, as they were now billed, had ironed their hair and dawned mod out ts looking every bit of an all-girl band. They were introduced to Curt Boettcher, who cared nothing for their family values and highly guarded virtue. He was simply interested in the Clingers’ talent and musical drive. Through Boettcher, they were introduced to the Ballroom, Jim Bell of The Millennium and Sandy Salisbury. Beyond the musical connection, the Clingers hung out at Boettcher’s party house and had their rst real eyeful of a rock ’n’ roll counterculture lifestyle. Their eyes were opened to a whole di erent world of hippies, freaks, creatives and druggies.

The Clinger home became a revolving door for men and boys, charmed by the allure of music from one of the rst all-girl bands most had ever heard of. The group began to seek out new inspiration, which came along in the guise of young producer Michael Lloyd and his enigmatic hype man, Kim Fowley. Perhaps out of everyone that the Clingers ever worked with, it was Lloyd who understood and respected them the most. He admired the family closeness and revered the Clingers’ ability for musical diversity, from their precious fragile harmonies to screaming rock ‘n’ roll energy.

The Clingers were four daring sisters who had the courage and conviction to break stereotypes. They were church girls with guitars who never understood exactly why the devil should own rock ‘n’ roll.

• A 2LP compilation of the Clingers’ singles & unreleased material!

• Includes liner notes by Glynis Ward (Host of Crayons To Perfume on WFMU)

• The CD includes two bonus tracks!

JOURNEY TO NABTA PLAYA ANGEL BAT DAWID & NAIMA NEFERTARI

RD: 02 MAY 2025

"Journey to Nabta Playa is a spiritual and sonic journey into a lesser-told piece of historY."

Design & Art Direction by Nep Sidhu

Journey to Nabta Playa is a remarkable collaboration between composer and vocalist Angel Bat Dawid and interdisciplinary artist Naima Nefertari (aka Karlsson).

The album is a journey in sound and sisterhood rooted in the artists’ historical exploration of an ancient stone circle in Nabta Playa, a deeply sacred astronomical site in the remote deserts of ancient Nubia. Their historical research of the site acts as a point of departure for the story this album tells and embodies more than just a musical testament; it is a spiritual and sonic journey into a lesser-told piece of history. This 180g 2xLP gatefold album with art by Nep Sidhu and a painting by Kahil El’Zabar, also comes with a beautiful zine incl. texts by Neneh Cherry, Imani Mason Jordan, Tej Adeleye and Dr Adam Zanolini

“WANT” ESTHER ROSE

Esther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want, her stunning fifth album. At first, the words seemed almost like a joke, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy, but I don’t want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential, spiritual, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song.

This precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still, something was different this time. “For me, these songs felt like revelations,” she explains, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters, shifting relationships with substances, evolving perspectives on adult partnership, and, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive.

A Trick of the Light is the new album by Chicago-based guitarist / composer / bandleader Eli Winter Winter’s 2022 self-titled album, also for Three Lobed, found the bandleader often ceding control of his improvisation-inclusive songs to his committed collaborators. On A Trick of the Light, he has further refined this approach, resulting in an elegantly crafted and vibrant collection that finds Winter, as both composer and bandleader, at the height of his powers.

The album opens with an arrangement of “Arabian Nightingale” from Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell’s seminal reunion album, El Corazón Winter previously recorded the tune as a blues-y and almost nakedly vulnerable solo piece for Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions series. The full band version heard on A Trick of the Light, which is nearly 14 minutes longer, audaciously sets an extremely high bar for the remainder of the record, trading the pianistic minimalism of the Cherry-Blackwell original for a suite of dazzling intensity. At one point following saxophonist Gerrit Hatcher’s lively and exuberant solo, the group whips up a sonic storm; this dramatic moment, however, is more devilish fakeout than denouement. Just when you think the song has reached its climax, the band locates the eye of the storm, setting the scene for an exhilarating middle section that conjures Ry Cooder sitting in with Natural Information Society before concluding with a coda that then returns to the irresistible Ornette-like motif.

The plaintive and sumptuous “For a Fallen Rocket” foregrounds Sam Wagster’s wooing pedal steel swaying like a kite over a lush bed of piano, acoustic guitar, harmonium, percussion, and galloping bass. More than any other piece on the record, “For a Fallen Rocket” reminds us that Winter is, at heart, a melodist. In recent years, Winter has increasingly seemed to favor the electric guitar, but his sole appearance on acoustic here is a good reminder of why he is frequently evoked in conversations alongside peers like Daniel Bachman and Nathan Salsburg: Winter’s playing is as melodic and winsome as the former and as speckless and crisp as the latter.

“Cracking the Jaw” reprises somewhat the muscle of the album’s epic opening track. Here, the prodigally talented self-taught guitarist who typically eschews minor keys rather uncharacteristically allows room for some creeping pathos. Throughout, the distinctions between Winter and his supporting musicians continue to remain in flux, the elastic contributions of the sympathetic group resembling that of a single organism.

Carla Bley’s luminous “Ida Lupino”—one of the 20th century’s greatest songs follows, and is given an abstract and concentrated reading that mischievously only hints at harmonic resolution, leaving space for the adroit ensemble to extract from the song a previously undetectable kind of drama. In a sense, Winter de-romanticizes the tune; his interpretation trades some of the original’s autumnal prettiness for a breezy, almost elemental simplicity that stresses timbre and rhythm. Andrew Scott Young’s pirouetting jabbing bass provides a tonal home base for Wagster, whose pedal steel carries the song’s melody with the same reliable subtlety and charm he exhibits throughout the record.

The album’s title track, featuring the spectral violin of Luke Sutherland alongside heavily processed contributions by guitarist David Grubbs and “lead bassist” Mike Watt, is a churning rubato that provides a welcome and natural contrast to much of the cheerful, plangent buoyancy of the album’s first half, a credit to Winter’s instincts as an arranger as well as his omnivorous musical tastes; this is, after all, a guitarist who cites both Pauline Oliveros and Judee Sill as influences. Drummer Tyler Damon emerges as the MVP here, his percolating rolls and accents making the case yet again that he may secretly be the American underground’s most creative and musically intelligent drummer working today.

The evocatively titled “Black Iris on a Burning Quilt” doubles down on the previous song’s epic tension with a cinematic and dreamlike conclusion that evokes of all things the yearning greyscale dread of post-hardcore. This unexpected pivot is cleverly subverted by Kiran Leonard’s cittern, Wagster’s pedal steel which alternates throughout the piece between the noisy and the pastoral and Alex McKenzie’s tastefully minimalist bass clarinet.

The phrase “a trick of the light” references an optical illusion that can appear to produce uncanny, transitory mirages. On balance, it’s a remarkably apt title for this album. Such phenomena can only occur, of course, under the most fragile and fleeting of conditions: when imagination collides with natural magic. Winter’s compositions and performances, alongside those of his fellow performers over these six songs, creates an audio equivalent a situation where what you are hearing has somehow, perhaps alchemically, created something even greater and more extraordinary.

“Performing Belief” is the fourth solo album of producer, drummer, and vibrant polymath James Krivchenia, and his first with Planet Mu. Following the hyperactive “Blood Karaoke” (2022, Reading Group), “Performing Belief” builds rhythmic thickets from gathered sounds interwoven with synths, drum machines and other samples. Having built these rhythmic nests, Krivchenia then called on two contemporary mages of the low end: electric bassist and fellow Angeleno Sam Wilkes (Wilkes/Gendel) and double bassist/multiinstrumentalist from Krivchenia’s native Chicago, Joshua Abrams (Natural Information Society). Wilkes and Abrams bring the presence of a grounding human witness to the rhythmic undergrowth, providing a centering and even at times melodic voice to the gathering. This alchemy carries a profoundly fresh sense of time, blurring the edges of the quantized grid and the generic boundaries of electronic music.

The core of the album is a lush, opulent matrix of percussion ranging from the familiar—hand claps and drum machines—to the mysteriously verdant, sampled largely from Krivchenia’s own performed field recorded collection. For years, he would record any and all of his musical encounters with natural objects: performing on a particularly resonant log on a hike, throwing rocks into a pristine pond, tap dancing in the mud. This archive of “natural” sounds became the fertile soil out of which the tracks on “Performing Belief” grew. What is gained in the process is not just a novel set of sounds, but a new rhythmic language. The particular give, the anticipatory rustle, the extra breath of a hollow log when functioning as a kickdrum provides a greenness that overtakes the rhythmic grid, giving this music a peculiar kind of stickiness. This rhythmic language, set in Krivchenia’s long-fermenting electronic musical palate, feels like a revelation, even while it calls back not only to his wonderfully elastic timekeeping behind the kit with his beloved band Big Thief, but also to his prior work in computer music as well as his deep study and love of the vast human archive of drumming.

“Performing Belief” is in good company in the rank and file of the legendary Planet Mu label. From the foundational early releases of the likes of Jega and Venetian Snares, to the contemporary envelope-warping work of Jlin and hundreds of brilliant releases in between, Planet Mu has been a beacon of forward-thinking rhythmic music for decades, informing Krivchenia’s own sense of the weird metaphysics of musical time since he was a kid.

Krivchenia’s contribution to this history calls to mind the principle of organic danceability that subtends Mu’s whole catalogue, while bending our sense of rhythm in new and gracious dimensions. Krivchenia brings out the loamy complexity of natural rhythms, a clearing as generous as it is inviting. Let the drummer give you some.

: Logic1000

Even by the standards of an internationally renowned DJ and producer, 2024 was a busy year for Samantha Poulter aka Logic1000. She released Mother, her long awaited debut album, to widespread acclaim which included gracing the cover of NME, being named DJ Mag's 'Album of the Month', delivering a sensational Crack Mix, Boiler Room session and more. Poulter also remixed the likes of Dua Lipa, Shygirl and more, toured across three continents, and made her Glastonbury debut. All this while remaining a staunch activist and a fiercely dedicated mother to her still new daughter. It’s no wonder then that when she was asked to contribute to !K7’s iconic DJ-Kicks series, she was seeking a sense of calm, and a sense of home.

“This DJ-Kicks truly represents my listening habits of the past three or so years”, says the Melbourne-born, Berlin-based artist of the music she’s spent the most time with since the start of her music career proper and, coincidentally, the birth of her daughter. “I’ve really slowed down and found myself going deeper with the music I find and love.”

The result is remarkably transportive. A calmer side to Poulter than we’ve yet seen but still woven together with the deft hand that makes her DJ sets so enthralling. There’s a magic to those first hours of the day at home. A sense of suspended serenity, a bubbled isolation that, rather than feeling lonely, glows with possibility and purpose. This feeling isn’t one that can always be found – especially if you have a three-year-old – but Poulter bottles it perfectly in the opening moments of her DJ-Kicks.

For an artist who so far has made music that’s known for lighting up sweaty late-night dancefloors, this mix comes as a slight left turn. For those who know Poulter though, it feels very much like her. This side of Poulter has always been present in her music.

“My biggest hope for this mix is for its listeners to become reflective, at peace and maybe also inspired to start their day with a calm, considered and beautiful energy”.

On her third full-length TIDE/TIED, Montreal artist Thanya Iyer expands on the future-folk designs of sophomore album KIND with washes of jazz-inected pop and ensemble ambience. While Iyer explored a more personal journey of self-love on KIND, she, her band, and cohort of guest musicians embark on a new way of moving on TIDE/TIED, prizing collective care and communal healing as antidotes to the dissonances of living in a colonial, capitalistic world.

Over twelve tracks, Iyer alternates song, synth layer, strings, and loop substance, interxing with percussionist Daniel Gélinas’s meditative drumming and multi-instrumentalist Pompey’s adventurous arrangements. Through a deeply collaborative process, Gélinas and Pompey — themselves experienced producers — created the powerful and intricate worldscapes of TIDE/TIED, guided by Iyer’s incisive musical vision, all the while maintaining a cohesive, collective approach to the creative process.

The Montreal-based singer-songwriter and violinist’s music feels like an invitation to reect. Each song recounts not just stumbling and uncertainty, but a sense of motivation.

BACK IN PRINT; ORIGINALLY RELEASED MARCH 10, 2023

Originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana but “naturalized by the Natural State” as a teenager, Dylan Earl (or “Dearl” as he’s come to be known) has been active in the Arkansas underground country scene for over a decade, first as a founding member of the alt-country band Swampbird and then as a solo performer and songwriter. Alongside his friends and contemporaries Willi Carlisle and Nick Shoulders, Dylan has been heavily involved in carving out space for socially conscious Country Music in the Mid-south region and beyond.

On I Saw the Arkansas, Dearl guides us through the many wacky stories, close encounters with the law, dizzying romances, and endless highways from this chapter of his life. Juxtaposed, but perhaps not entirely in opposition, he describes the calm yet wild beauty of the Natural State and the inspiration and contemplation he draws from his home. Longtime fans of Dylan’s work will recognize the trademark blend of honkytonk, southern rock, and traditional country which has defined his sound for years: rowdy rambling tunes like “Buddy” and up-beat two-steps like “Fever,” full of energy and swagger. On this latest recorded effort, Dearl blazes new sonic trails, like the borderline psychedelic romp of “White Painted Trees” and the meditative and somber title track, a dreamy waltz which paints a picture of the spirits of the narrator, the Arkansas Traveller, and beloved Southern poet Frank Stanford, watching their bodies float by from atop a levee on the Arkansas river. Across the record’s nine tracks, Earl’s baritone vocal stylings are, in moments, reminiscent of iconic country forebears Randy Travis, Waylon Jennings and Conway Twitty. He uses it to tell his story earnestly, and not without laughing at himself a little bit along the way. Timeless in its unique combination of elements, forging "I Saw The Arkansas" into a tender, rambunctious, and ultimately classic listening experience.
