A Message from Dean Lei Welcome back to campus! I am very proud to recognize and convey my appreciation to the Rutgers Business School staff for your dedication and hard work during the past 18 months. Whether you worked from home or came to the office regularly during the pandemic, I am grateful for your efforts to exemplify the strengths of the RBS brand defined by the 4 Rs: • Resilient: You had the courage to take on the unprecedented COVID-related challenges that have never been seen before.

• Resourceful: You worked hard together to deliver innovative solutions to ensure uninterrupted instruction and quality services for our students, both during remote instruction and now when we are back on campus with in-person classes.

• Responsible: Day in and day out, you delivered on promises, carried out responsibilities, and stood up as individuals that our campuses can count on.

• Reinventing: Higher education has been changed forever because of the fast changing world of technology, and our day to day work has changed forever because we are now operating in a post-pandemic, new normal. Nevertheless, our staff members solved problems and found new ways to contribute toward the success of RBS, our students, our campus, and our University.

Staff Spotlights KerriAnn Mattaliano Administrative Assistant

Department: Undergraduate Programs-New Brunswick Years of Service: 4 ½ years Job Duties: I support the Office of Undergraduate Programs in New Brunswick in various areas, including; course registration, academic advising, certification of graduates, and assist in coordinating RBS events such as Open House, Academic Planning and Advising Days, and Freshman Orientation. In addition, I manage the implementation and maintenance of online student forms in DocuSign and Ivy AI Software.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Petting dogs and sitting on beaches, soaking up the sun.

What do you want others to know about you?

This past May, I earned a Master in Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Education with a degree in Education, Culture, and Society. It was a lot of hard work, and now that it is over, I miss it.

Stephan Kolodiy Student Counselor Department: Undergraduate Programs - Newark Years of Service: 10 years Job Duties: This past January, I transitioned from a role with the RBS Graduate Admissions Office to the RBS Undergraduate Programs Office.

I guess you can say that I went from ‘sales’ to ‘customer service’. My main role is now an academic advisor for undergraduate students at RBS-Newark.

I guide students in their academic journey here at Rutgers and make sure they are progressing toward earning their bachelor degree.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

Something with athletics. Athletics have been a huge part of my life as a child and an adult. I have served as an assistant soccer coach at the high school level, a head collegiate soccer coach, and I am now a parent coach for my kids’ youth teams. I believe that I would either be working in a college athletics department in an administrative role or being a physical education teacher.

What are the three words that best describe you?

Organized, humble, cautious.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

Sell my house and buy a bigger one!

Rutgers Business School recently hosted its 5th Innovations in Business Education conference, this year combining both Undergraduate & Graduate Business Education topics into a single two-day virtual conference. As Dean Lei stated, behind each successful event, there is a mountain of work, from program design, to invitations, to coordination, to technical support, to marketing and communication. Departments can set up an account by contacting RU-Department of Transporation, info_dots@ipo.rutgers.edu. Departments can establish multiple users and issue e-permits for either the Newark or New Brunswick campus.

Please note that use of e-permits can only be used by visitors, non-affiliated with Rutgers University. Use of this permission by students, faculty, or staff will result in a $100.00 citation for fraudulent use of permission.

Visitor Parking is permitted in Deck 3 and Eagle East lot 509A on the Newark Campus, and any Faculty/Staff Lot on the Livingston Campus.

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month Did you know that October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month? Every day there are countless abandoned, neglected, or abused dogs in community animal shelters awaiting their forever homes. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) sponsors Adopt a Shelter Dog Month every October. The American Humane Society also celebrates a month-long October campaign encouraging the adoption of shelter dogs from the more than 5,000 animal shelters and rescue groups in this country. Animal activists make it a priority to match each dog with a compatible owner and environment to support the dog’s best second chance at a loving and stable forever home.

Steps: 1. Click on “Options”

Professional Development & Committee Updates

Mini-MBA Team Management Essentials Twenty six RBS staff members are currently enrolled in this year’s Rutgers Business School Mini-MBA: Team Management Essentials. Topics covered to date in this ten module program include Strategic Thinking and Planning, Relationships, and Communication.

In this exciting professional development curriculum, staff members are challenged to explore how each week’s topic applies to their current work situation and what new theories and key learnings can be utilized in the RBS workplace. For example, understanding what strategy is, and is not, is important when developing a realistic, actionable plan to accomplish specific goals. How to distinguish between leadership and management is an effective tool when building, strengthening, and repairing relationships. Useful techniques were also learned on how to influence others and deepen relationships. In the class on Power Communications, students were taught to consider their AIM, an acronym for Audience-Intent-Message.

If these teasers have piqued your interest, it is not too late to register for one or more of the remaining Team Management Essentials modules (although you will not be eligible for the certification, which requires completing the entire Mini-MBA course and assigned work).

Facilities Meet 100Rock’s Daytime Security Officer Edeltraud ‘Ede’ Gruenewald Years of Service at Rutgers: 3 years, since August 2018 What are some of your duties here at 100 Rock?

Daily shift operations include providing courteous and professional access control, maintaining order, and enforcing building rules and regulations, as well as Covid-19 safety measures, inform management on updates, unusual incidents, assisting students and faculty with any questions they might have, monitoring, recognizing, and reporting conditions that adversely affect public safety, parking enforcement of adjacent Scarlet Lot. How is it going so far?

Very smoothly.

What is your favorite part of the job?

Interacting with students, faculty, staff and seeing smiles on the students’ faces.

What is most challenging?

Nothing really, if at all then, enforcing mask wearing.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this?

After being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, I wanted to be a part of the workforce again. Having a banking background and having worked in that field for 7 years before moving to the United States, I would say either working in a bank or maybe in retail again. I am open to any challenge that might come my way, and I am eager to learn.

What are three words that describe you and why?

Driven and passionate, because I like to get things done, and, well organized, because I like to plan.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Besides spending time with my girls and friends - travel, music, bike riding, hiking, gym.

Do you have a favorite quote or words of advice to share with RBS coworkers? “It’s not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you were the day before.”

Anything you want to add?

I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to work at RBS.

Event News RBS Welcome Back BBQ’s On September 1st in Newark and September 23rd in New Brunswick, Rutgers Business School welcomed back over 3,000 students, staff, and faculty for the first ever Welcome Back BBQ event. Originally planned as an outdoor event for both locations, coincidentally, both dates had rain in the forecast, but that did not dampen the energy and outcome.

Both days were filled with live music, a barbecue spread of food, and giveaways. The leadership team was also seen behind the counters, distributing food to our many students. From From t-shirts, water bottles, leather portfolios, face masks, and magnets, no one walked out emptied handed. After 17-months apart, it was wonderful to see many faces, both new and old, back in our buildings.

A special thank you the following staff members for helping make this event a complete success! RBS Faculty and Staff Retreat 2021 On Friday, October 1st, an enthusiastic group of over 100 RBS faculty and staff gathered at the beautiful Liberty House restaurant on the banks of Jersey City and the NYC Harbor, with many RBS professors joining the Deans’ annual faculty meeting virtually. Thank you to OTIS for successfully resolving the many tech challenges this offsite event presented.

Faculty and staff enjoyed a tasty luncheon buffet featuring grilled chicken with potatoes and green beans, tossed salad, lemon salmon, creamy pasta, and much more. The dessert trays of colorful petit fours, cookies and macaroons were as pretty as they were delicious.

With iconic views of the Manhattan skyline, everyone ventured outside to celebrate the warm weather, a gorgeous blue sky, pleasant surroundings, and the company of colleagues. It was great to resume a joyful RBS tradition, and, I think it is safe to say, we all look forward to getting together again soon.

Networking Over Football On Saturday, October 2nd, the RBS Office of Alumni and Corporate Engagement hosted Rutgers University board members, friends, and families at the exciting Ohio State versus Rutgers football game at SHI Stadium overlooking the Raritan River in Piscataway.

Almost 100 special guests attended the event in a large suite overlooking the field, complete with a buffet lunch, open bar, and RBS swag giveaways. Despite a disappointing loss to the 11th ranked Buckeyes, everyone had a lovely afternoon. Thank you to Sharon Lydon, Associate Dean, and Andrea Cunnell, Assistant Director, Office of Alumni and Corporate Engagement, for organizing what they hope will become an annual social and networking event.

RBS Classes of 2020 and 2021 Celebrate Graduation On Sunday morning, October 24th, several Rutgers Business School students gathered at the Rutgers Athletic Center, not for a preseason basketball game or a wrestling match, but for the long-awaited RBS graduation ceremonies that had been postponed due to COVID-19 over the past two years. Highly anticipated by recent graduates, the opportunity to finally walk across the RAC stage, hear their names announced over the loud speakers and shake hands with Undergraduate Dean Marty Markowitz as they collected their diplomas, gave some members of the RBS Family the recognition and closure they have been searching for during these unprecedented and challenging times.

Thank you to Ron Richter, Helen Pensavalle, Matt Peyrek, and Madhavi Chakrabarty, and all the other volunteers who made this special day possible for the RBS Classes of 2020 and 2021.

Rutgers-Newark Responds to Global Tragedies From Hurricane Ida, conflicts in Afghanistan, and the devastations surrounding Haiti and latest earthquake, it is no doubt that this year has brought unthinkable hardship to many around the globe. Thanks to the New Jersey Small Business Development Center, together with their partners at the New Jersey State Veterans Chamber of Commerce and American Red Cross, and with the Haitian Association of Students at Rutgers -Newark (HASAR), the Rutgers Newark community has successfully donated over 450lbs of items (clothing and shoes for women, men, children and infants) who have been impacted by this year’s recent tragedies. Diapers, baby wipes, and baby formula, and a bag full of approx. 90 COVID-19 protection packs (with masks, thermometers, hand sanitizer, and gloves) were also donated.

An extended thank you to Shyeka Hopkins, Marketing Coordinator, NJ-SBDC for coordinating such tremendous efforts!

Staff Shared Recipes Apple Crisp Shared by Brenda Anderson, Program Coordinator, Dean’s Office Ingredients: • • • • • • •

3 Granny Smith Apples 3 Cortland Apples Cinnamon Sugar 1 Cup of Flour 1 egg 4-8 Tablespoons of salted butter

Instructions

1. Cut up 6 apples into chunks (Even Mix of granny smith and Cortland Apples) 2. Place in a baking dish and evenly sprinkle with cinnamon sugar 3. In a small bowl thoroughly mix 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar and 1 egg.

4. Cut in 4-8 tablespoons of room temperature salted butter until crumbly.

5. Evenly pour/spoon small bowl mixture on top of apples in the baking dish.

6. Sprinkle with cinnamon and a bit of sugar if desired.

7. Cook at 350F for 25 minutes or until top is golden and crispy. (NOTE: the sides where the apples are will start to bubble when ready).

8. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top if desired.

RBS Staff Newsletter Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. And this year, with the global pandemic and grave COVID-19 challenges at the forefront of all our minds, it is more important than ever to be reminded of the importance of breast cancer prevention. Knowledge and early detection save lives.

The past year and a half has seen a reduction in screenings and early detection, so please, please encourage your family members, friends and coworkers to continue to access all the lifesaving educational resources, screening opportunities and support services that are essential to beating breast cancer.

National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15th – October 15th National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the culture, heritage, and achievements Hispanic Americans have contributed to this country and recognizes ancestors who came to America from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson observed Hispanic Heritage Week, which was expanded to a month long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

The date of September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
