BEHIND THE SCENES OF SCRIBBLES

Every Wednesday, at 3:15, a group of students walk into the 8th grade Spanish classroom to create this awesome magazine. But in that same amount of time, we create jokes that make no sense whatsoever but still make us laugh…

Who knew that a group of students with different lives and hobbies could join together and create something for everyone to enjoy?

Welcome to the Scribbles classroom. One where art, writing, pictures, and all the things we enjoy is put together into one collection of pages…

You can, too, come in one day and be a part of the fun. More members are always welcome here!

Banning Bags

Drawstring bags were banned after spring break. First, it was backpacks, then any bags other than drawstring bags, and now finally drawstring bags, effectively completing the ban on bags.

As the threat of mass shootings, especially school shootings, increase, schools are forced to take preventative safety measures to reduce the chances of violence. This might be a possibility as to why the drawstring bags are being banned. Another possibility might be to stop students from bringing vapes to class.

Because we now have to carry all our materials around, we have to stop two or three times at our lockers each day to retrieve binders for our next classes. This, in fact, increases hallway traffic because students take more time to stop, put things away, and take other things out.

It is also very cumbersome to carry around binders and laptops with our hands, and students are constantly dropping things.

However, some students may still bring drawstring bags to school. After tote bags were banned, students still carried their supplies in them. The banning of drawstring bags may be an opportunity to reinforce the other bans on bags.

Similar bans have been passed in school districts across the country, and some schools have banned backpacks entirely. According to CBS News, “[h]istorically, the need to ban bookbags at the end of the year came out of the need to minimize pranks and disruptions. Now, it’s part of the discussion on safety”.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, as of April 26, 2023, there have already been 172 mass shootings this year. However, banning bags may not be the best solution. Amnesty International says, “The USA lacks measures such as a national firearm registry. Individuals can lawfully carry concealed firearms in public in every state in the USA and can lawfully openly carry firearms in public in most states. However, there is no nationwide uniformity in laws governing the carrying of firearms in public, and in some states there are no laws at all: 12 states allow individuals to carry concealed weapons in public without any license or permit and 30 states allow the open carrying of a handgun in public without any license or permit.”

Scribbles Interviews…

When did you come to Princeton Middle School?

“I have been teaching French since 1999 but I only recently came to Princeton Middle School in February of 2022. I love teaching middle school and the World Language program here at PMS is amazing!”

What job did you think you would have when you were younger?

“I think I wanted to be a paleontologist or a veterinarian!”

What are some of the responsibilities you have as a teacher?

“Oh there are many...like grading and planning lessons, state mandated paperwork and continuing education or professional development, attending meetings. But everything we do is for the students!”

Do you have any pets?

“Yes I have three cats. I love animals!”

What do you like and dislike about teaching eighth graders?

“I like teaching 8th graders because they are ready for more challenging content, they're serious about learning and their success, and we have a lot of fun in class! The only part I don't like about teaching 8th graders is that they leave PMS at the end of the year, and I won't get to see them in the building next year. I'm really going to miss the class of 2023...they're really special to me.”

What is your favorite book/TV show/movie?

“Funny you should ask about my favorite book...I was just talking about this with some of the 8th grade teachers. Its hard to say which is my favorite book because there are so many that I've loved reading, but the first that comes to mind is called The Goldfinch by Donna Tarte.

“I love Ted Lasso on Apple TV!!!! It's almost the end of season three...the last season, sadly.

“My favorite movie if I had to choose one is The Princess Bride.”

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?

“I think I'd travel to ski in the French Alps or to relax on the beach in the south of France...Cannes or Nice or Antibes. Anywhere in France really!”

The clock struck 12:00. The bell sounded. I looked at my fingers. They felt odd. Like a tingling sensation rushing through my veins. Had it not worked? I did what she asked, I followed her orders. Yet it hadn’t worked.

My fingers were feeling suddenly lighter. It then was obvious that I was turning into a spirit. That old lady tricked me. Not only did she place a curse on me, because of a mistake my father made years ago, but she said that if I did what she said I would be free.

Let me explain. I’m Iris. I have lived with my aunt Katrina since as long as I can remember. But, this September I moved away to go to college in Pennsylvania. My year started normally, a lot of work, but then I noticed some weird things happening.

Well first of all, my things continuously switched places. I put my book on the table, I came back and found it on the shelf. There was also this one time I found a mug broken on the floor. Then, she was following me. She was watching me from afar. After that, she talked to me.

I was walking out of my college, she approached me, and said some weird things. She said that I would pay for what he, my father, did. Then she started to say some words that I didn't understand. They sounded Latin. Suddenly it felt as if electricity was running through my body. If anyone said “you can’t feel a curse”, well they better take my place then. It was painful. She continued to talk. She said that if I didn’t help her, I would become a spirit by tomorrow, the time the clock struck twelve at midnight. I agreed to help her. I was scared. She wanted me to steal from her. She said that a man took one of her most prized possessions, her diamond necklace. I went to his house and took it. I thought she would stick to her promise.

But it seemed otherwise. Now I was fully a spirit. Tears started going down my face. I didn’t think it would actually happen. What would I do? My aunt kept telling me that life is like a fairy tale, that you need to get through the difficult parts to reach a happy end. I guess I didn’t deserve a happy ending…

PMS Protests

What rules or situations do we not like?

The PMS students are beginning to feel like the administration is out to get them. There are many things that we are upset about.

● The backpack ban. The administration explains that this is logical; it will help keep hallways clear. The students acknowledge this as a problem, but the backpack rule does not fix this… it in fact makes it worse. We need to visit our lockers more and are dropping and breaking, things in the halls.

● If-you-don’t-wear-your-ID-you’re-getting-detention. We can’t even change our lanyards? This is said to be logical: the teachers do it. Well, most importantly, they’re adults, and this is typical for adults to do. Students needing IDs (we all hate our pictures anyhow) is not normal.

● Bags were then completely banned. We have not been offered a logical explanation, and students are inclined to assume that this is the administration enforcing their power (since we wouldn’t use only drawstring bags and no other kind. Has the administration ever carried around a bag with their laptop in it held up only by a string? It hurts).

● We then received recess lectures. Our entire recess was taken up by Mr. Burr when he explained why all the rules we hate we should actually love, and what dire consequences will befall us if we do not follow them. Furthermore, we were then shown a picture of lots of trash, which we didn’t do.

In short, the students of PMS do not feel listened to or respected. They do not feel that these rules are logical or have been well thought out… and if they have, we have not been told the actual reasons for these rules, that only seem to serve to make our lives harder.

DISCLAIMER: Please do NOT sue us for this article, we are just stating the opinions of students.
