Exploring Nature Around Princeton

Saw-whet Owls at The Watershed Institute

Ever since I moved to Princeton from New York City in 2016, I’ve spent a lot of time on the weekends going to different programs about nature and animals with Mercer County Nature Programs, Duke Farms, and The Watershed, where I went to camp last summer.

I recently went to a program at The Watershed that talked about the research being done there on Saw-whet Owls, through a “banding program” that the Watershed’s education director Jeff Hoagland set up with the Wild Bird Research Group’s founder Tyler Christensen, a field biologist who does a lot of interesting nature work in New Jersey.

Banding programs are important because they allow trained scientists to safely capture owls (or birds), measure and record observations, and then place a metal band on their leg, which has a number from the US Geological Survey (USGS), a federal agency that has been coordinating banding programs for over 100 years. Then they release them and track the owls’ migration and learn about them. Anyone who sees a banded bird can report the sighting through www.reportband.gov. The USGS receives over 100,000 bird encounter reports with the band numbers each year.

Since they started this banding program, they discovered that there are more Saw-whet Owls in our state than previously believed. These are the smallest of the owls in New Jersey. Without programs like this, we never would have known there are so many of these small owls in Central New Jersey.

Saw-whet Owl Banding Program (October 28, 2022) In fall 2019, Tyler Christensen and his team are showing me a Long-eared Owl they captured that night — the only time this has happened since they started the Saw-whet Owls banding program.

Institute Woods

The Institute Woods is a wide trail through the woods near the IAS and Princeton Battlefield. Many people don’t know about its hidden gem; a suspended bridge. The full route of this trail is 3.6 miles long. Albert Einstein often walked here in his free time to get some peace and quiet.

Scribbles Interviews…

What job did you take before coming to Princeton Middle School?

I started a middle school teacher career teaching math and science. I was the principal at Riverside Elementary School and recently transferred to Princeton Middle School.

How has middle school changed since you were in middle school?

There’s obviously a lot more technology today, which makes it a lot easier to communicate with peers and research online. I had to do a lot of work and research on paper. If I wanted to meet up with friends and work, we would have to meet up in a place where we could do research, such as a library. However, in some ways, it was easier to communicate.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I don’t really have a lot of spare time, however, with the time I do have, I help with community service projects and do yoga. I’ve also been vegetarian for over thirty years, so I also spend time cooking vegan meals.

Ms. Lattimer

Did you have any dreams or goals when you were in middle school?

Yes, actually! I liked art and museums a lot, and I wanted become a curator when I grew up. My parents even let me travel around the United States to see different pieces of art! I also liked science and chemistry; I researched plants and animals.

What do you like and dislike about Princeton Middle School?

I really like Princeton Middle School. The students here are very friendly and nice. I also like the amount of club opportunities that are available to the students. I find the staff very focused on helping students succeed. I suppose the school could increase chances for helping students find out what they are interested in and be more connected to the school as a community.
