BBrothers, it's that time again Province Council season! This is when brothers from all corners come together to elect new province officers, debate and vote on bylaw amendments, and celebrate chapters and individuals for their exemplary service. From engaging in the general sessions and roll calls to enjoying the formal closed banquet and grabbing some Nupe swag from the vendors, this event embodies the spirit of being a Kappman
The Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, is more than just a regional governing body It is a beacon of leadership and support, ensuring that each chapter within its jurisdiction upholds the fraternity's esteemed values and standards. The Province Council, with its storied history dating back to its inception in 1943, is a testament to our shared legacy and a source of pride for us all.
The roots of the Province Council can be traced back to the tenure of Province Polemarch Dr W Henry Greene in 1943 Initially, these gatherings were held on college campuses, with delegates accommodated in college dormitories, local YMCAs, or even private homes The meetings were more about social interaction than formal business, often combining undergraduate and alumni chapters. This early form of the Province Council has evolved significantly over the years.
In 1945, a memorable one-day Province Council meeting took place at the 12th Street YMCA in Washington, DC The highlight was watching the Army-Navy game on television, a treat at a time when TV was still relatively rare By May 1951, the fraternity's Kappa Khronicle began publication, announcing the agenda for a threeday Province Council meeting starting May 11, 1951 The event was hosted at the “Kappa Kastle,” located at 1708 S Street NW, Washington DC, with Howard University facilitating additional activities.
A significant change occurred on April 20, 1957, when the Province Board of Directors decided that the Province Council should be structured as a conference This adjustment introduced registration fees for undergraduate and alumni chapters to cover expenses for three delegates from each chapter The Kappa Khronicle also saw its first editor, Brother Richard Hobson of the Baltimore Alumni chapter, take the helm
For those interested in further exploring the past, “The History of the Eastern Province” by George F. David, III, which provided information for this article, is highly recommended This booklet offers a deeper look into the province's rich history before 1991, showcasing the legacy and enduring influence of the Eastern Province within our fraternity

Brother Steven Burke, Chairman of the Social Action Committee, Guide Right Chairman Jerry Cade, and the Brothers and their Kappa Leaguers from the Dulles-Leesburg (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
The TCAC has implemented four (4) programs of the Guide Right Portfolio Those programs are:
Guide Right Mentoring Program Kappa League Room to Read STEM
The successful undertaking of these programs at such a young chapter that has just celebrated its first full year of operation speaks to our dedication and commitment to our youth.
Highlights of our actions and accomplishments are as follows.
The TCAC opened the Kappa League Program with a Zoom meeting attended by chapter leaders, Kappa League Leaders from other chapters, former Kappa Leaguers from other chapters, and the family members of the inducted Kappa Leaguers This ceremony set the scene for the Kappa Leaguers and their families that our program is serious and requires a commitment to self, to us, and their families for successful completion of the program TCAC has 11 inducted Kappa Leaguers
The guiding principle of the TCAC Kappa League Program is exposure and self-growth Through our activities, we strive to introduce our young men to as many new experiences and opportunities as possible while asking them to consider their place in this world. We encourage our mentees to grow and learn together while matriculating through school
Highlights from Kappa League Activities are summarized below:
At the beginning of each year, our Kappa League students develop vision boards depicting the short-term and long-term goals they will work towards throughout the year
The young men are challenged to keep their goals in front of them and review them often. At the end of the year, we do an assessment, celebrate our achievements, and look for areas we can improve.
Eastern Province Air Show at Andrews Air Force Base
Our KL’ers were transported from the TowsonCatonsville Region of MD to Prince George County to participate in a Joint Base Andrews community program. The experience of visiting a US Military Air Base, sitting on military transport planes, receiving presentations from our service men and women, seeing military fighter planes in flight and on the ground, and seeing the commitment our service members make to their service responsibilities, has an impact on how our KL’ers see themselves Our KL’ers, when watching the news or discussing current events at school and mentioning that the President has landed or taken off from Joint Base Andrews, our guys can say, “I’ve been there”
Kappa League Administrative Organization
Consistent with our motto, “Training for Leadership,” we ask and demand that our young men conduct themselves in an organized business fashion when meeting and planning their activities within our program. Beyond introducing these young men to conducting and executing business functions successfully, our KL’ers build the confidence to perform these functions in all they do Speaking and conducting business skills within the Kappa League program translate to the classroom
Howard University, one of the most storied HBCUs in the country, offered our KL’ers an opportunity to witness what it looks and feels like to be on that campus and among the student body. In addition to touring the campus, our group received tickets to attend a men’s basketball game Again, exposure to new experiences ensures our young men will reflect upon what they have learned and how they see themselves
Thanksgiving Grace AME Church – Our TCAC KL’ers supported the TCAC as manpower to serve meals to over 100 families As we have learned, doing something for others in the community helps develop a sense of caring and pride in a person Community service is a requirement of our KL’ers.
TCAC has established a tradition of executing a community service project on MLK Day to celebrate the many contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Consequently; our KL’ers execute a community service project as well Our KL’ers provided toiletries, socks, and food to Baltimore City and Annapolis, MD homeless people.
The TCAC KL’ers, as part of the social awareness, produced a “Get out the Vote” video to educate the community on the importance of voting. In informing the public of the importance of voting, our young men learn that lesson as they teach others.
The TCAC Kappa Leaguers hosted a Room to Read Program session at a recreation center in the Cherry Hill section of Baltimore City, MD.
The TCAC adopted Dumbarton Middle School in Towson, MD. The Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools participated and supported the adoption of this school. TCAC members offered a program to the school's leadership, which the Principal and Counselor approved. Following the approval of our members to be in the school and our program for the students, the school leadership assigned a group of young men to attend our sessions each week TCAC called our Dumbarton Guide Right Group “Diamonds in the Rough.” However, these young men were asked to name themselves after a few sessions So, they did; they named themselves the “DMS Kappa Boys.” In addition to selecting their name, the DMS Kappa Boys designed their own logo The school leadership printed shirts for the DMS Kappa Boys. Now, other boys at Dumbarton want to join our guide right program This is impact
TCAC Room to Read Program
The Room to Read Program, an initiative by Grand Chapter, promotes our youth's love of books and reading. At the TCAC, we gleefully promoted this program but merged the Room to Read Program with our Guide Right Program. Specifically, we trained our Guide Right Mentees, the DMS Kappa Boys at Dumbarton Middle School, to read books to students at the neighboring elementary school.
The results of this event surprised everyone The elementary school students were engaged and excited to have our young men read stories to them The Administrators at Dumbarton Middle School were very proud of the DMS Kappa Boys Most importantly, this event had a significant impact on the DMS Kappa Boys. They felt proud of their accomplishment and received praise and positive attention from the school's leadership.
This event caught the attention of the BCPS Foundation, a non-profit organization associated with Baltimore County Public Schools that focuses on the betterment of its students by promoting reading by school students. THE BCPS Foundation reimbursed TCAC for the cost of the books we donated to the students and committed to supporting this program annually
STEM is a major initiative of our Grand Chapter, wherein chapters implement programs to expose our youth to STEM TCAC partnered with a non-profit organization, Pass IT On, to host a STEM Fair at Lansdowne Middle School. The fair exposes attendees to robotics, flying drones, graphic arts, music engineering, and computer coding through fun games and activities TCAC is working with Pass IT On to host a fair at more locations throughout Baltimore County Schools.

Old school Nupes showed up and showed out at the Center Pocket Sports Bar & Billiards happy hour. The venue was set especially for us to eat and enjoy our favorite cocktails while fellowshipping with brothers from CPSS and other chapters. We had a sectioned-off area with 3 tables and a VIP lounge with one table in the room for high-competition matches. Most of the serious players brought their own sticks Competition and trash-talking filled the air. All had a good time. The committee is planning another billiards event shortly at the request of the brothers who attended

For Fraternal Year 2023-24, the Reclamation and Retention (R&R) committee of the College Park - Sandy Spring (CPSS) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated has endeavored to create programming that
would provide fellowship opportunities not only for the Brothers but also for their beloved Silhouettes and significant others To that end, several events were slated for potential planning and execution throughout the year, including the Game Night event
To meet this objective, a subcommittee was tasked with defining, planning, and executing an evening of entertainment and fellowship at minimal cost to the chapter and those who attended This event was to be open to all members of CPSS, regardless of financial status, and their invited guests. With this intent, the subcommittee defined the event's format and programming.
As Brother Keith Smith (Zeta Phi, Spring 1986) led, the sub-committee met on a scheduled cadence to brainstorm on all aspects of this event, including the location, menu, music, games, activities, timing, and communications. Fortunately, Brother and past Polemarch Duane “Doc” Graves graciously offered to host this event at his home, with Silhouette Graves' permission, of course! The sub-committee then went “old school” and surveyed the Brothers at the Christmas party to capture their preferences for this kind of event This feedback proved to be invaluable
The sub-committee followed up with an electronic survey, generating further interest and commitments from Brothers. This enables the sub-committee to move forward with its planning and coordination and defines the event theme as “College Paraphernalia.” Lastly, the suggestions of having a menu sign-up sheet and adding a karaoke machine proved to be wise decisions based on Brother Graves and Brother Andre Gladden's feedback
With everything in place, Game Night was held as scheduled on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 6 pm. Despite the threat of bad weather,
approximately 25 Brothers and guests showed up and had a great night of fun and fellowship at the Graves home Brothers brought food, beverages, board games, and card game “smack talk” with fellowship and Brotherhood in their hearts The R&R committee met its objective with this event and has already considered “even better if” strategies to improve the next event (ie, move over and let the Silhouettes plan, lead, etc.).
