FALL 2022

A Message from the Province Polemarch

Dear Brother:

Perhaps the roots of happiness grow deepest in the sandy soil of volunteerism, which has been, and still is, our primary focus. Since its inception, Kappa Alpha Psi has undertaken those special causes that benefit society’s marginalized and economically vulnerable. Our noble clan continues its thrust to seek meaningful ways to make the world we live in a better place, manifested through our social action and humanitarian endeavors. Phi Nu Pi is the magic ingredient that has made it possible for us to achieve success as a corporation, which one can discern from a critical review of the historical record With inflamed enthusiasm and an unbridled passion for achievement, we have reached a pivotal moment in our existence.

Because we are a viable unit of our organizational structure, we must continue to prioritize and focus on our core strengths. Our Eastern Province brothers, as it should be, work harder and smarter; they strive to provide exemplary programs and activities in the communities where we are chartered We truly value their dedication to our long-standing goal of lending our time, talents, and resources for the advancement of others. Our continuing challenge is to keep Kappa’s good name and its good works before the public at all times Our local chapters, especially, are constantly formulating clear ideas and strategic action plans for achieving our mission, while leaving that indelible Kappa mark on the footprints of time. I personally applaud your efforts individually and collectively to be worthy stewards of the rich legacy that our foundational leaders bequeathed us

The Kappa Chronicle, the province’s official news organ, is designed specifically to highlight some of the myriad accomplishments of our undergraduate and alumni chapters as well as our esteemed members. And I am pleased to commend the current edition of this publication for your edification With heartfelt appreciation for your ongoing commitment to the high standards of excellence that epitomize us as a fraternity and in the spirit of the Advent season, I am

Yours in the Bond, Charles E. Exum, Jr. 29th Eastern Province Polemarch

Lt General Hamilton spoke to the Kappa Leaguers at lunch. On Saturday night, all that attended were treated to a great debate finale between Alexandria/Fairfax (VA) and BellevilleO'Fallon (IL).

The Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Debate Team Argued Its Way to The Top

Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni

This year’s National Kappa League debate challenge was packed with talent in the form of teams from all over the Country. Eleven teams began the single elimination bracket in March and culminated in a single debate held in St. Louis, MO in July. The team from Alexandria-Fairfax led by West Springfield High School sophomore Caleb Rucker successfully argued some very timely and relevant topics on their way to the championship round

16

In the first round, arguing against the champions from last year (St Louis, MO), the team convinced the audience that social media has not Significantly Improved Human Communication With South County High School freshman Samson Boyd delivering the opening argument, the group made points supporting the basic case that it’s people, not things, that change human communication.

In the second round against Decatur, GA, the team drew the affirmative side arguing that high school student-athletes should be able to earn money from their NIL A flurry of questions from Flint Hill High School Junior, Matthew Tremble, helped convince the judges of AF’s argument that you can’t take students' right to earn money just because they may be athletes

The third round saw AF against the team from New Rochelle/White Plains arguing against public schools having armed security guards AF’s master at rebuttal, South County Junior, Eli Boyd was instrumental in making points that refuted any argument that armed guards helped in school shootings, and made points that investing in teachers and counselors could quite possibly change situations that lead to mass shootings. Tragically, two days after this debate an armed gunman walked into an elementary school in Uvalde, TX, and killed 21 people.

The fourth and championship round took place at the Guide Right Centennial Celebration in St Louis, MO Hundreds of Kappa Leaguers from across the US witnessed AF against the team from Bellville O’fallon, IL. The topic: There Is No Significant Difference in the Education at an HBCU vs. That of a PWI. Alexandria/Fairfax argued in the affirmative South County Senior, Zion Nuby questioned the other team and delivered the rebuttal this time for AF, another sophomore from Flint Hill, Ayden Laster Ayden was

able to argue that the accreditation process saw to it that there is no difference in education. In the end, the judges found in favor of Bellville O’fallon even though Caleb Rucker brought the house down with his closing statement: “When history looks back and tells the real story, the moral will go something like this; whether you aspire to be President or Vice-President of the United States, Columbia will get you there just like Howard will get you there

All in all, the young scholars on the team had a great time and they learned a lot about themselves and their own capabilities. While each member (except Zion) had no prior debate experience, they pulled together and grew stronger with each round. The tournament and its participants were a true testament to the mentorship which is a standard from the Guide Right Program of this Grand Fraternity

Representatives from the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Guide Right program competed in such

events as the math challenge, swag design, poetry, E-Sports, and the basketball tournament. Along with all the fun and camaraderie that was had, the young men managed to walk away with some accolades.

Aside from the competition, there were many workshops and presentations that kept the participants busy, entertained, and learning. Throughout the week, the students had an incredible opportunity to visit and get a preview of college life while attending sessions on the campuses of St Louis University and Harris Stowe University.

The Centennial celebration had something to offer everyone in attendance and it was a model event. The young black men were presented with prime examples of their Kappa mentors proving their care for, and commitment to our future leaders The Grand Polemarch was in attendance showing that our Grand Fraternity leads the way in mentoring.

In the end, the guys had a great time, and they learned a lot. Amongst the most valuable of their five-day experiences were the bonding opportunities that they had with their fellow Guide Right members. It was a remarkable event to mark the 100th anniversary of Guide Right

Towson-Catonsville (MD) Alumni 1st Anniversary

Towson-Catonsville (MD) Alumni

On November 20, 2021, the Towson-Catonsville (MD) Alumni Chapter (E) of Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc (TCAC), held its chartering ceremony. The Brothers of TCAC continue to be grateful for the enthusiastic support of 34th Grand Polemarch Reuben A Shelton III, Esq; 29th Eastern Province Polemarch Charles E. Exum, Jr, who presented the charter; Senior Province Vice Polemarch Richard B Mattox; and many other Fraternity dignitaries who were present

This past first year provided TCAC with various opportunities to continue its engagement in substantive public-service endeavors, including but not limited to food, clothing, and schoolsupply drives for homeless shelters, K 12 students, and churches; our Guide Right/Kappa League programs; and other charitable work. With the exception of Guide Right/Kappa League, all this work preceded TCAC’s charter, as Brothers were always eager to serve. Special recognition in this regard goes to Brothers Vernon W. Fisher and Lamont O. Norwood.

Of note, TCAC inducted its first Kappa Leaguer, Mason Rice, who was invited to Guide Right’s Centennial celebration in St. Louis, MO. He was accompanied by Brother Vernon W. Fisher, TCAC’s Guide Right chairman. Mason was followed by the second inductee class

20

of Malik Phillips, Daniel Lewis, and Andrew Lewis All these young men are quite impressive.

Before receiving their charter, the Brothers of Towson-Catonsville Alumni conducted their works of service through the TowsonCatonsville Alumni Association (TCAA). One of its projects was the COVID-19 Vaccine and Mental Health Town Hall, a video of which can be found here. On October 29, 2022, TCAC will host its second healthcare event, titled Men's Health Matters: Prostate Cancer Roundtable. TCAC’s Social Action Committee, chaired by Brother Lamont O. Norwood, produced both events

TCAC established the Towson-Catonsville Alumni Kappa Charitable Foundation (TCAKCF), which provides funding for some of the many public-service efforts in which TCAC is continuously engaged On November 19, 2022, the Foundation will host a fundraising dinner and celebration in honor of TCAC’s 1st Anniversary The proceeds from this event will help to fund TCAC’s impactful work during the 2022-2023 fiscal year Information about and tickets for the event can be obtained here.

The Brothers of TCAC wish to thank 34th Grand Polemarch Reuben A. Shelton III, Esq.; 29th Eastern Province Polemarch Charles E Exum, Jr.; Senior Province Vice Polemarch Richard B. “This will be the day, that you will hear me say, that I will never run away. I am here for you, love is meant for two, now tell me what you’re gonna do?” (Prince, 1991) That is what the DJ played to the kick-off of the evening event. “If I gave you Diamonds and Pearls, would you be a happy boy or a girl?” (Prince, 1991).

Happy they are! The Martinsville (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,

The Divine Nine was well represented in the crowd, including – the “Alphas”, the “Ques”, and the “Deltas”, as well as the “Kappas” and “AKAs.”

This Scholarship Gala would not have been as successful without the collaborative effort of the committees behind the scenes They were KDO’s Dreama Dalton, Basileus, DelShana LeGrant, Pelzetta Perry, Pamela Pritchett, Veraine Randolph, and Tabitha Reid Also, The Marvelous Martinsville Nupes: The Spring 2018 initiates, Polemarch Quincy Gravely, and Desbee McDaniel; The Fall 2021 Initiates, Japhet LeGrant, Victor LeGrant, and Keeper of Records, Michael Palmer

27
A 50/50 raffle was voluntarily collected from the jubilant participants present and a winner was declared by the ticket number given

The top prize went to Terry Moore--an “Alpha” in the midst--he won half of what was collected $125

That night at the museum came to life with contagious laughter, fantastic food, renewed fellowships, snapshots of moments, a few strolls from those “Ivy” women, and a shimmy or a twirl of a cane from those “NUPES” of distinction

As the evening festivities winded down, DelShana LeGrant, Basileus of the KDO chapter, provided her closing remarks in the same delightful way as she initially greeted the guests by wishing them “safe travels” and provided words of “thanks” to The Marvelous Martinsville Nupes, and Polemarch Quincy Gravely. The joint venture concluded with crowd assistance and clean-up of the museum.

Memories were surely created by “Diamonds and Pearls!”

Kappa Legacy-Three Generations

Preserving the legacy of Kappa Alpha Psi is paramount While we are sure there must be more brothers out there who have contributed to the legacy, we wanted to take a minute to highlight the Brown family Since 1950, there has been a Kappa man in the Brown family Brother Ollie Brown is the first to become a member of the fraternity while crossing the burning sands at Virginia State College (The Alpha Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi). We would be remised if we did not acknowledge the matriarch, Silhouette Catherine Brown who has been the foundation and rock of the family Silhouette Catherine and Brother Ollie have been married for over 68

years In those years, she has been all the things wives and mothers are often required to be/do in order to ensure the success of the family Those things include, but are not limited to, teacher, cook, waitress, nurse, counselor, secretary, therapist, and accountant Thank you, Silhouette Brown, for nurturing and allowing your men to support our fraternity!

While the Brown family has provided a long legacy of Kappa men dating back over 70 years thus far, they have future opportunities to continue the legacy.
