Twelfth-GradeWorldLanguagesLoveofLearning

Luke enriched the learning experience of his peers by bringing to each class curiosity, intellectual thought, and his quirky yet wonderful sense of humor. Luke was curious about vocabulary. When possible, he made connections between Spanish and English vocabulary words, and he retained them and was able to use them at a later point in time. He was intrigued by and inquisitive about various cultural topics, and he regularly contributed his thoughts and questions during our class discussions. Each time he left class, he said “Gracias, señora”. While I have heard this from many of my students on a daily basis, Luke’s “thank you” communicated a very different feeling. Whatever new word or concept he had learned on a particular day, it was understood that he would continue to think about it, analyze it, and perhaps bring it up again in the following class. In preparation for his Internal Assessment for the IB exam, Luke made certain to incorporate all the necessary elements, from theme-specific vocabulary to advanced grammar structures and unique idiomatic expressions. Luke has been the committed and enthusiastic language learner every language teacher hopes to see in their students.
