Because this year's theme involves different art styles, the staff of Oakleaves 1 9 9 4 would like to dedicate the yearbook to the Arts Department. Although most students are in some way involved in the fine arts, we feel that the Arts Department does not always receive the recognition it deserves. Poly's Fine Arts Department offers a wide selection of opportunities to be involved in either the visual or the performing arts. Each teacher brings his or her own talent to their classrooms and dedicates large amounts of time each day, whether it be staying after school to direct a play or using their lunch period to help a student finish a batik. Students can also find friends in any of these individuals. Being Scared of What We - Don't

HOMOPHOBIA

Over 90% of two thousand gays,and lesbians recently Sl!rveyed reported some form of vicand 33% had been directly threatened with violence. Not only is homophobia a _ problem nationwide, bur it is also an issue at Poly.

When Poly students were asked if they were homophobic, most responded, "No, but I haven't re;ny come into contact with many homosexuals, so I'm not really sure." However, statistics show that out of every four families in the United States has a lesbian or gay in tpe immedicrte family.

Another frequeqt response was, "No, as long as they keep their distance, but I know a lot of people are homophobic .. .I'm always hearing gay jokes or ,seeing people imitate how they think gays act."

Why qo so many high school students feel the need to joke around about homosexuality? Some researchers that 'it stems from a feeling of rarely acknowledged insecurity about their own ,emerging sexuality. A sophomore male states, 'Tm definitely positive that 95% of all heterosexual guys are homophobic. It's just that most of them are just too afraid to admit it."

One sophomore girl contends that it is simply "unnatural" to be homosexual. "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

A senjor male was asked, "Would you care if your child's role model were gay?" He an_ swered, "I'd really like to say no, but I know for a fact that I would."

A sophomore male i n response to the same question, "Of course' I would care because I wouldn't to risk affecting my kid but what gay role model is there?"

When offered the example ofMartina Navratilova, he replied, "She's a woman. That doesn't count because, I don't know why this ·is, but it's just more natural for girls to be lesbians than for guys to be gay, because just gross."

Asked why mab have a problem with ical displays of affection among themselves, male became defensive: "Yeah, right! And be labeled as a fag? Get serious."

When asked about the"level of acceptance of homosexuals in the Poly community, one freshman girl "[We] sort 9f [accept them].

We 'want to think that we do." One senior girl noted that while many people claim to · be open-minded about homosexuality, internal feelings can quite the opposite.

While the fight for gay rights continues to be waged, it is c;:lear that gays will not be fully accepted until they have what is most elusive: an overall change in the attitude that most members of our society hold regardi.ng homosexuality.

When is Thin Too Thin?

EATING DISORDERS

Of the eight million people in the United States ·who suffer from eating disorders, over - 90% are female. Eating disorders are particularly prevalent in middle and upper class Caucasian adolescents and young adults. As many of 1% of young white women may have some form of an earing disorder.

The two ,most common types are anorexia nervosa, a form of self-starvation in ::which virtually no food is eaten, and bulimia, where individuals may eat normally or go on eating binges, resorting to vomiting a nd laxatives to control their weight. Common symptoms art.: a 15% weight loss of expected body weight, irregular menstrual periods, and a slow heartbeat.

Medical statistics report that approximately I • half of the young women recover. About 20% improve but are underweight, another 20%,.., remain anorexic, 5% may become obese, and 36% die. The risk of death from an arrhythmia, or irregular is especially high when weight loss is more than 35% of expected body weight Another frequent cause ·of-death is suicide. -

Eating disorders result from a combination of social and psychological factors. Anorexics and bulimics are often characterized by a disturbed attitude towards b0dy image, influenced by cultural and social factors. This is illum ated by the high frequency of eating disorders found among models,

ana some athletes.

The new generation of waif models is an example. Every inch as tall as other models, they weigh pounds less and look unhealthfully thin- Although they claim to have high metabolisms, all models have different ideas about what constitutes a "normal" daily (ntake of food. Whiie media images of these skinny girls may not be the sole cause of eating disorders, it mosdikely does

The best to assist friends who }}ave bulimia or anorexia is to help them acknowltheir prol;>lem, which they will often deIJy. Once this is treatment and recovery can begin.

Crossing the Border

IMMIGRATION

Illegal immigration into the United States, especially into California from Central America and !\:iexico, has always been controversial. The and Naturalization Service (INS) estimates that between 3,000 and 4,500 people attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexico border every night. Half of these people are caught and returned to Mexico; the other half enter the country, hoping to imprnve the quality of their lives.

In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) was passed, requiring all em, ployers to check papers verifying that the workers have the right to legally in the United States. ·

Fires Consume·Southland

Ragi!1g flames covered over 150,000 acres of Southern California 'during the week of October , 25, driven by the Santa Ana winds and fed by dried trees and shrubs accumulated after six years of drought. Firemen tried ' I everything from dropping water bombs from aircrafts to surrounding the fire /wU:h firelines apd firebreak s, but it seemed as if these fires refused. to be contained. ,

"I distressed that people were · repeating things that were unsubstantiated," he said.

California, the Golden Stare: It calls to mind images of perpetual sunshine, beaches, palm trees, - and movie stars. . ' / Yet lately r"hat image has l;,ecome . clouded by the riots, fires, , drought that California. Our econor:nic have begun to subside, yet the end of our troubles is , nowhere in sight. Is,California cursed or can we rebuild?

- The fires, ran(ing into six counties, devoured over 730 homes and 160 ,000 acres. Property damage is estimated $500 million, and eighty-four casu3lties were reported, none of them attributed directly to the fire.

Locally, the 'Altad_ena/Sierra Madre fire injured 40 and forced some Poly families to ,evacuate as the advancing fireline threatened their canyon homes.

Poly itself faced no danger. Upper School Director Greg Feldmeth strived to preserve plm Poly students by st ating, "My main was for the safety .of the students. I encouraged students at morning meeting to d-0 three things: to stay here, ' to not spread gossip about the fire, and to not joke about it." -

Despite his request, Feldmeth felt that eyaggerated rumors concerning the fire persisted

However, proving the rumors to be unsub-stantiated out to be difficult, as many of the affected student population had 1-eft , school either to be with family or to help save their houses from the approaching inferno. few Poly families did damage to their _houses, but most were spared by the flames.

The Altadena fire was started by Andres , Huang, a Chinese transient, who / "Yas found guilty of a misdemeanor charge of UI;1'intentionally starting a fire. He had built a fae near Firecracker Plantation to keep warm.

1993 a boon:i for the movie industry, with several motion pictures pulling in one hundred million p-lus.

Taking the biggest bite out of the box office was Steven Spielberg's dinosaur thrille_r, "J sic Park,"_which grossed 800 million dollars worldwid<:;. Speaking of money, women 1ii: film became marketable goods this year ?-as both 'Entertainment and Michelle Pfeiffer pointed out. Demi Moore was sold by her husband for 9ne million in "Indecent Proposal," -poor Holly Hunter only cost Harvey Keitel a_few piano keys in "The Piano," and Julia Roberts, Mrs. Lyle Lovett, who was once bought by Richard Gere'in "Pretty n," -finally returned from her vacation from the Hollywood limelight in the box office hit, "The Pelican Brief.'"

As usual, 1993 and 1994 movies played on the s ame again and again. Cr<;>ssdressing became popular in not only the "Mrs. Dbubtfire" with Robin \fillliams, b!-lt also in "The Crying Game," "Ed Wood" with Johnny Depp; , and "lt'.s Pat," based on the Saturday Night Live sketch. Westerns returned from the ghost towns in 'Tombstone," "Geron"Bad Girls," "Wyatt Earp," and :'Into the West," among others. This year was also a ground-breaking year for movies about Chinese people and homese:xuals. Movies like "Philadelphia," "The Joy Luck Club;" "FareWell My ConGubine", " "Dragon," "Six D egrees of Separation,", "Golden Gate," and "The Wedding · Banquet" followe.d°'the lives of characters who deviated from the stereotype, and although there was the usual inundation offormula films and sequels, movief!lakers went out on a limb to experiment with new methods.

Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was filmed in stop-motidn photography, using clay puppets and models. Steven Spielberg shot the critically acclaimed Holocaust movie, "Schindler's List," in documentary style angles and iri black an d white, and the ron;iantic comedy '"I'll Do Anything" became the first movie in- history to be filmed as a musical with song and dance numbers, then to have all of that editted Out., and to return, a · month later revampe d without so inuch as a whistle from star Nick Nolte.

They also threw rocks at ocher people, spray-painted o"ne man's face and genitals, and left one person deaf in one ear. Yet Damian Williams was acquitted on all charges of murder and aggravated assault and was convicted on only orye charge of mayhem:. The other three were released with hardly a slap on the wrist and are now back on the streets.

How could the "L.A. Four" off so lighclyfor such a crime? The jurors stated char the four had an excuse: growing up in the Los Angeles ghettoes was hard, and when the police who beat Rodney King were wrongly acquitted, there was no p'ossible response ocher than to riot. However, no matter how hard their lives were, the "LA. Four" had options besides violence. But the ju!ors in their politi'cally 'correct' sympathy forgot that, an cl their sentence showed the jurors held' society more than 'they did the "LA. Four."

The jury's judfomem in the trial of Lorena Bobbitt in January, 1994 was equally problematic. In chis overly publicized case, Mrs. Bobbitt cue off husband's penis one nig'ht while he . was asleep, drove down the road with it, and threw it out' the window. Lorena Bobbitt's lawyer claimed chat she was "the pathetic victim of physical abuse, humiliation,.and·sexual - torment," and that her husband's cruel treatment drove her to dismember him.

At the time it sounded a little preachy, but now, as I read my old yearbook, it makes sense. As my folks used to say, "Your mom and dad aren't as dumb as you think."

I have to admit I didn't fully appreciate my family's advice, so now I will give you some of my own free words of wisdom: YOU GET MORE OUT OF YOUR EFFORTS THAN YOU PUT INTO THEM. If you don't believe this, why not ask some of the people who have volunteered for projects at your school.

For the fourth consecutive year, Poly's varsity soccer team won the CIF-Southern Section girls' soccer championship. Of the eleven seniors on the team, seven started their first game in their freshman year. According to Coach Freeburg, these seven girls have lost only five out of 129 games in the last four years.

Inside Oakleaves

The David's right arm was reproduced as though it were rendered in pencil.

This leg was rendered in the same style as Vincent VanGogh's impressionistic _

paintings.

The various parts of the David·s body were altered using a computer software package called Fractal Design Painter X2® . which mimicks natural media.

The image created for the opening of the yearbook was inspired by a popular photograph from the 1960s. depicting a group of Chinese university Inside Oak leaves r} 238

students performing "' scenes from the Communist revolution. under the watchful eye of a portrait of Mao Tse-tung. the Communist leader of China until the 1970s.

It was during the ·10s th at Mao became a sort of cou ntercu ltu ral icon in the west. It was for this reason that Oak leaves decided to create its own version of this image. using a picture of the Poly

This arm was designed to imitate generic computer art.

The David's torso was redesigned by Alex Aranovich, using his own style to represent the statue's muse le tone.

The left leg was recreated in the style of the acetate cells used in the production of cartoons.

The idea for this image was to present the individuals of the Student Body as art, rather than attempt to find
