Throughout his 34 years as a Middle and Upper School teacher, Mr. Stuart Freed has remained an integral member of the Poly arts community. From his initial work in Tech Theatre to his current roles as a wood and ceramics teacher, his exceptional creative vision, unprecedented dedication and ability to mentor students in developing skills and pieces of art of a caliber vastly beyond a high school level has inspired students and faculty alike .
Mr. Freed's dedication toward his students and passion for wood and ceramics is evident in his open-door policy, which encourages students, whether or not they would consider themselves inclined visual artists, to explore a variety of creative mediums: for example, amidst his Middle and Upper School classes and pursuit of personal projects, throughout the first semester he mentored the Jewish Student Union in their construction of a six-foot tall wooden menorah in honor of Hannukah.
Students greatly appreciate the creative oasis that he governs with open-mindedness and ease.
The Poly community would like to thank Mr. Freed for the impact that his 34 years of fervent passion and undying dedication toward fostering a creative sanctuary have had on countless students.

Ms. Patty Tsai Thurlow has been passionate about science since she was young. Her innate curiosity and affinity for science eventually led her to Caltech , where she double-majored in chemistry and biology. Upon graduating from Caltech, Ms Thurlow walked across the street and immediately became an integral part of the Poly community.
Throughout her 23 years in the Upper School, Ms . Thurlow has served as a dedicated and beloved member of Poly's science department , teaching Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Biology, AP Biology, lntro to Forensic Science, Human Development, and Psychology. Her favorite part about science is that the subject is "never ending , self-correcting , and continually being updated."
Students appreciate Ms. Thurlow's glowing presence on campus : with her coffee in hand and friendly smile , she instills confidence in her students , who tackle complex and daunting scientific concepts. She has inspired many to pursue fields in chemistry and biology.
From providing detailed study guides and homework keys to her early office hours and after-school review sessions, the Poly community thanks Ms. Thurlow for both her dedication to her students and her endless contributions to Poly's science department.

Over the summer, Poly students found many ways to exp lore their int erests and have fun! From music concerts and beach trips to internship s, students could be found eve rywh ere ! "Under the leadership of President Justin Hogan, the ASB skillfully guided the upper school through another succesful, yet hectic year. We were elected as representatives of the community, and in order to fulfill that role, we made various attempts at increasing communication between all facets of the community. We can't control everything, such as the inevitable silences as another installment of PolySnaps lights up Garland, but we hope that by increasing communication and working to continue empowering student voice, Poly is one step closer to being the vision we as a school have for it. Thank you for supporting us throughout the school year."

The MSL has experienced some radical transformation this school year, reaching beyond simply playing a larger role in the Poly Community and raising of money for charity through fund raisers like Root Bee r Float sales and our annua l Poinsettia Sale With the addition of four new cabinet members, a new vitality has descended upon the MSL, extending last year's legacy. We have continued our use of advisory focus tools, so we are now focused as ever, and the Bagel Integration Program is still the envy of the school. Advisory times are a powerhouse for new fundraising ideas and team-growth Lastly, our now-fully developed growth factorization program is as strong as ever and has inspired some other advisories to consider similar protocols. The MSL is a changing group for changing times.
"Peer Mentors are seniors placed in freshmen advisee groups who lead and organize events and discussions for the ninth-graders. The program encourages interaction between seniors and freshmen and is an important resource for many underclassmen This year, the new schedule allotted more time to advisee, allowing for more constructive activities and dialogues. The Pe er Mentors and their ninth grade advisees played fun inter- advisee games , participated in thoughtprovoking diversity trainings, considered the benefits of mindfulness and meditation, and , of course , ate plenty of tasty treats. "
"The Student Athletic Leadership Council focuses on providing a positive influence through student athlete leadership on teams at all sports levels , as representatives of the Poly community and the Pasadena community at large. The council supports the school 's credo , mission statement, and philosophy The three cornerstones of SALC are spirit , service , and education With this year's leaders Joe Masters and Kate Fogossa, SALC created an atmosphere of support and connection between all grade levels As SALC continues their job , the Poly community is e xcited to see what's in store ."

" The USOC is comprised of nine students who are dedicated to inspiring civic engagement through service learning and community outreach. The USOC coordinates outreach events, supports individual and group service initiatives, and connects students to local organizations in need of volunteers "
" Poly Arts Student Council is dedicated to sharing and celebrating both visual and performing arts. Throughout the year, we hold 5th Quarters, visual art shows, collaborations with Hillsides , and many more events Not only do we promote art within the Poly community but also within the Los Angeles area We want to give students a greater understanding of art and what it means to be an artist."
"Th e Ambassador Council meets regularly with the Associate Director of Admission to further the mission of the admission office. They coordinate the training of ambassadors so that they are prepared to meet with prospective families who are learning about Poly. Among many duties, they help with the scheduling of ambassador s at various admission events."
"The Girls' Service League is one of the oldest organizations on campus , and we are so thankful to have been a part of it. The GSL's goals are to r aise money for a charity of our choice and to promote bonding between all of the girls in the Poly community We decided this year to continue supporting the international charity from last year We also expanded the cabinet to include sophomores to give underclassmen a voice in our mission, and we changed aspects of the big sister little sister program to increase participation and satisfaction."

What is your favorite thing about Poly?
I like the campus at Poly ; it's relatively small but the buildings are very beautiful.
What is your favorite class?
Undoubtably my favorite class is AP Biology. Although the amount of work is sometimes crushing , the fascinating content outweighs the cons .
What do you miss from home?
Mainly I miss my friends Another thing I desperately miss is Finnish gum . Luckily my parents have sent me a few packages over the course of the year
What is one place you would still like to visit?
I haven't had the chance to visit the Getty Museum yet, so that is most definitely one of the things I will do before I leave
What is the biggest difference between Southern California and Finland?
Weather is the biggest difference between California and Finland . At the end of the summer, right after I had arrived in California , I remember going to cross country practices when the temperature was around 100 degrees It took a while to get used to the heat, but now I can't even imagine life with the rain and cold weather.
Why did you decide to study abroad?
I decided to study abroad because I wanted to perfect my English and have an experience that will surely be useful later in my life

Their work is im rpactful and helps foster Poly's diverse community.
After spending around a month in school, freshmen depart on one of five trips offered to them over trips week. The trips offered consist of fly fishing in Mammoth , fun on Catalina Island, backpacking in Escalante, sustainable living on Jameson Ranch, and mountain biking in Mammoth. Each of these trips lasts around five days with no access to electronics; the students are immersed in the beauty of the nature and life around them Students learn many things one cannot learn in a classroom. The exposure to these kinds of enviorments opens students' minds to what lies beyond the bubble of a world they live in. Outdoor education plays a huge role in creating the kind of community Poly is

At the beginning of October, Poly sophomores set off on an adventure of a lifetime to one of five prime destinations. Students hike ten miles to reach Havasupai, an oasis amid the Grand Canyon, day hike through the unique geological formations in Zion National Park, rock climb in Joshua Tree , bike along the California Coast, surf at San Elijo State Beach, and backpack through the High Sierras. Students bond with their classmates through both evening campfires .. , and their problem solving of outdoor challenges. By their second outdoor education trip, sophomores are anxious to experience yet another both physically and mentally challenging trip.

In late September, the entire junior class packs into buses and drives the 12 hours to the Klamath River in Northern California, where they begin their week-long river rafting adventure. Each morning, paddling groups rig their boats and prepare to raft an average of four hours per day. Though the long days on the river are strenous, by their third outdoor education trip, students are proficient in pitching tents, cooking, and navigating the outdoors. The Klamath River provides challenging rapids, incredible native scenery, and an opportunity for students to share a relaxing and fun outdoor experience.

Adrenaline rushing. Hearts pounding Class cheers echoing throughout Garland and the patios. Rivalry week The epitome of the school year. Grades compete against each other in events that test strength, instinct, intelligence, and teamwork The week consists of events such as the egg toss, the amazing race, dodgeball tournament, dance and ,..--rap off, and slip-n - side relay race. However, after a week filled with friendly rivalry, all grades come together to take part in a fun water balloon fight. This cherished Poly Upper School tradition creates an atmosphere that fosters long lasting bonds to form between students within a class and across campus

With a diverse team including sophomores, juniors , and seniors, the boys varsity football had an amazing season. The team played eleven season games and beat Rio Hondo to win prep league championships. Through the season the team has grown together, especially through challenges such as losing the first game of the season, which, according to senior Jackson Hayes , was "annoying, because we did not want that to set the tone for the season " However, the boys did not let the game deter them. At the end of the season, the boys victoriously made it to the first round of CIF. Congratulations to the boys for having a stellar season! Everyone is e xc ited for ne xt year.

After losing five starters and seven Varsity players, this year's boys volleyball team had to start from scratch. They aquired talented players from JV and received an influx of young and talented freshman, who have helped craft a skilled team. Though they started off slow, the team has been steadily improving and winning games . They are lead by the venerable senior tandem of Graham Olson and Jonathan Thein who have brought much leadership and wisdom to the court. They leave the team better prepared for the future and will be sorely missed. However, as the team looks to next year, they are excited to continue improving.

Poly's 2017-2018 varsity girls basketball team is composed of ten athletes: two seniors, one junior, three sophomores, and four freshmen. Although a majority of the players are underclassmen, these girls have shown their athletic prowess and proved themselves as integral parts of the team. The Panthers began the season with a championship title earned at the Poly Invitational Tournament, followed by five league wins and just a single loss to Mayfield. Despite moving up to Division 4AA from Division 5AA, the team remained diligent and focused throughout the league games, resulting in a strong season!

The girls Varsity softball team opened the preseason with an impressive four wins. The six underclassmen (two sophomores and four freshmen) seamlessly integrated into the tight - knit group of girls and proved themselves to be essential additions to the squad. The heavy rain in the beginning of the season interrupted game and practice schedules, yet the girls remained positive and committed to preparing as best as possible for the regular season. In Poly's home league opener, the team handily defeated arch-rival, Prep with a score of 13-3. Head coach Jenny Bond and assistant coach Alex Bryndzia are proud of the girls for their hard work this season!

" Throughout my four years at Poly, some of my favorite m e mories from the softball program have been the van rides shared with teammates ch atting and jamming to music on the way to games, playing laser tag to do team bonding, and crushing Prep to start off my last season . - Al1 Ul1n '18

Though the team lost valuable seniors from last year, the baseball team remained strong and continued to challenge the Prep League. Every player was committed and passionate about the game, and the team worked together as a single unit. Despite the league's emerging strength, Poly has had a dominant history, and the Panthers continued that dominance this year. With two 20-plus-run games, the team showed their ability to put runs on the board with ease . The numerous seniors on the team have contributed significantly, from the pitching of Matthew Loomis to the big hitting of Cam McFarlane and Sean Tibay. The team put a strong season together and is to be commended.

This year, the cross country e xcelled with the influx of new promising freshmen and the progression of its seasoned runners. The team was led by seniors Sophie Schleifer and Xian Shively who ex plemplified the hard-working and positive attitude Coach Caragher instills in his runners. Both the JV and Varsity runners ran great races, many of them shattering their personal records. Their success led the teams to participate in CIF prelims where senior Xian Shively and sophomore Sophie Phinney qualified. Both Phinney and Shively would go on to state where they would place 27th and an impressive 3rd respectively. The leadership and prowess of the senior runners will be sorely missed next year, but the promise shown by many of the underclassmen provide hope for the future

"I am so proud of how each runner e xceeded e x pectations through their devotion and determination during practices and races. The beauty of cross country is the camaraderie among teammates. It's a sport that is both individual and team based and both physically and mentally demanding. It takes a certain kind of person to willingly endure an intense fifteen to twenty minutes of pushing your body past its limits. I respect and value my teammates so much. They h ave become my family and my support system, and I can 't imagine being able to succeed in cross country without them ."

Poly's Varsity Track and Field team has always been a force to be reckoned with. This year was no different. With some new freshmen, but mostly seasoned veterans, the leadership was strong on the team. Every practice at Caltech's track was filled with intense focus and encouragement amongst teammates. While everyone may have been competing in different events throughout a meet, in the end they always came together to celebrate either their success or to discuss how they could improve as a team. In Poly track and field, every runner counts.

The 2017 -18 fencing team celebrated two tremendous fall and winter seasons and demonstrated consistent dedication and improvement, great sportsmanship during practice and while at away tournaments representing Poly as guests, and remarkable col laboration as a team. During practices over the summer, the fencing family grew when Assistant Coach Andrew Villaverde and 11 new freshmen joined the team. The team participated in an archery and fencing team-bonding event at the beginning of the fa ll season, traveled to Palm Desert for the Co llege of the Desert Tournament in late September, and participated in six other United States Fencing Association tournaments throughout both seasons. Junior Annette Lee led the Poly team with her impressive sixth-place finish at the College of the Desert Tournament. Sophomores Barker Thompson and Beau Gillam placed sixth and eighth respectively in the USFA E-ra ted Men's Foil Tournament. ian Kim participated in both foil and saber events at tournaments this year; he placed second in the direct elimination round for Saber. Lucas Demetriades, Theo Fernandez , Sam JohnsonLacoss, Fletcher Lang, Rufus Marcussen, Derek Mayo , and Elizabeth McCarthy also had terrific seasons. After several "captains' practices" to Lake Avenue, new music warm-up routines, Friday practice endeavors to the Weight Room, and a special banquet to pay tribute to a great year of fencing and the five veteran senior members in late February, the fencing team is looking forward to the success of the 2018-19 season in the fall.

The Poly badminton team was off to a tremendous start to their two month long competitive season, starting with a 5-4 record. The team took the court and overcame tough competitors, including Mayfield Senior School, Baldwin Park High School, and Sierra Vista High School, but fel l short to San Marino High School and Azusa High School. While not only having a successful season, the badminton squad also showed promise for the future with their young talented sophomores and juniors, showing promise in making the team unstoppable.

With a team composed of many first time swim competitors, this year's varsity swimming and diving team is as strong as ever. After losing several strong seniors, the team still perservered to achieve an unbroken winning streak for the girls. The boys had an amazing season, too, beating or coming close to beating many previous top rivals. With lots of seniors on the team who have swam all four years, the vast amount of first time competitors were in good hands Both the girls and boys teams have a strong season ahead of them as they compete in Prep League finals and CIF in late April and Early May. Go Panthers!

This spring, Garland stage transformed into a 1930s luxury cruise liner for a rendition of Cole Porter's classic "Anything Goes." When Billy Crocker (Henry Bryant), a Wall Street broker, discovers that his beloved Hope Harcourt (Annie Salvati) is aboard the S.S. American and is arranged to marry Sir Evelyn Oakleigh (Michael Van Citters) across the Atlantic , Billy sneaks on board to win back the love of his life along with the help of nightclub singer, Reno Sweeney (Jeilani Rhone-Collins), and con man Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin (Cole Swanson). Song, dance, and farcical antics makes for a memorable cruise and a titanic of a success for the Poly Performing Arts Department.

Poly's student dance concert took place in early December. Dancers of all levels worked from the beginning of school to choreograph and put together the amazing dances that were showcased. The Girls' Service League (GSL) hosted their silent auction during the show. All proceeds from the show benefited the iThuba Innovation Hub.

Poly's Tech Crew , or "Techies," are the masterminds behind the scenes for every Poly production, morning meeting, and assembly. With the help of Mr. Tom Allard and Mr. Richard Sherrell, the 2018 tech crew constructed the sets for the fall play and winter and spring musicals. The Vocal Ensemble , led by new conductor Dr. Alan Wellman, captivated their audiences with their performances at assemblies, the Halloween outdoor concert and the Winter Concert.

Rufus Marcussen is an experienced musician with skills well beyond his years. Rufus began playing piano at the age of four and quickly showed promise and dedication to his instrument. Rufus has also taken up violin and trumpet on the side and enjoys playing all three instruments in his free time.
To continue his progression as a musician , Rufus attends a competitive orchestra camp designed to challenge young musicians called Interlochen At the camp , Rufus has been singled out as one of the most talented players and has twice been given the opportunity to play piano at Carnegie Hall in New York. Rufus was honored by the opportunities and says he could not have done it without many of the musicians and people who have inspired him along the way.
When asked about his musical inspirat i ons, Rufus remarked, "I listen to an eclectic mix of music that provides me with a wide array of pieces and artists to draw inspiration from. One of my favorite artists who has inspired my own work is David Bowie." Rufus is also influenced by his father who works in the music industry.
Rufus looks forward to bringing his talents to the Poly stage in the future , whether it be through participation in the Poly orchestra or at 5th Quarter. We look forward to seeing Rufus perform and cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.

"We were all immigrants once," sophomore Saya Desai observed. In wake of the current refugee crisis, Desai fervently advocates on behalf of both immigrants and refugees through her work at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an organization dedicated towards resettling refugees and aiding immigrants in the citizenship process.
Desai first volunteered at the IRC two summer ago, where she processed forms for immigrating families as part of the Central American Minors (CAM) program.
Desai spent her freshman year at the IRC completing Refugee Information Forms (RIFs), which hold information on prospective migrants, in order to expedite the lengthy refugee resettlement process for Iranian families.
Desai has felt passionate about advocacy since she was young.
"I wanted to give back. My grandparents immigrated from India in the late 1960s, so I have always pondered the thought of 'what if?' What if my family still lived in India and we were in need of help?" she said.
This year through a new Poly initiative intending to broaden students' perspectives on the global refugee crisis, Desai along with two other sophomores were chosen to connect with young refugees from around the country.
Desai is currently working on developing an online network of resources for refugees in her Global Online Academy lOS App Design class.
"I hope that through my work I both humanize and give voice to those who are misrepresented," she said.

Junior McKenzie Minto has been involved in dog agility since she was eight years old. She first discovered agility when she met someone at the dog park who competed and was immediately enamored by the sport.
"I'm always hesitant to attempt to explain dog agility to people because it is so hard to do it justice. My quick explanation is that it's a timed obstacle course that you do with your dog, but honestly, there is so much more to it than that."
Training your dog to execute each obstacle is only one piece of the training process; the other aspect is teaching your dog to connect the obstacles by reading slight movements from your shoulders, feet, and eyes.
"The tricky part about agility is that the course of obstacles is composed differently every time, so the handler and the dog have never seen that particular course ever before. Practicing in agility is a neverending training process because it is all about perfecting a "toolbox" of body queues that your dog can recognize in split seconds and execute the behavior in the most time efficient way possible."
McKenzie's favorite part about agility is the community. "Being a part of the somewhat unknown world of agility has given me such a sense of belonging."
McKenzie and her dogs have attended major competitions such as the 2017 US Open in Florida, the 2016 Junior European Open in Slovakia, and the 2017 Junior European Open in Luxembourg as one of the Team USA representatives. She hopes to encourage more junior handlers to compete in the sport.
