It felt fitting to create a that epoftetl on the year's un recedented events. From online school to a pandemic to an election, this ¥eaF was definitely one for the books. The year ook staff, therefore, was tasked with creating a yearbook that accurately reflected the strange events. The following pages are inspired by the simplistic layout of a newspaper - thin lines, Times New Roman font, simple colors. We hope you enjoy the book for years to come!

Dedication: Operations Dept.

Without the Operations Department, Poly would not be able to be the p lace that it is today They are responsible for keeping our faci lities clean and safe Apart from and du ring COVID-19, the Operations Department is responsib le for ensur ing our safety in ways that most are unaware of. In advance of heavy rains , they install overflow drain hoses and manage our comple x comp u terized systems. They routinely open our campus at 5:30 a.m. Cu n-ently , for COVID-19 safety , our Operations Department has installed ventila6on fans in each bathroom , increased cleaning and disinfecting routines , re-arranged classrooms for six-foot distancing , and so much more. "Overall , they have done an exquisite job of keeping us safe while never failing to say "hi" or "how are you" as students walk around campus." Mr. Huysoon added , " They go about their duties every day without fanfare , but have tremendous pride in their work and that students , faculty , and staff may enjoy the facili t ies. " Our operations team not only provides us with a safe and clean campus, but also friendly faces to wave to . And for that , we are eternally grateful for their work, effort , and presence. They , without a doubt , make the Poly community great.

Dedication: Tech Department

With the ever-present technology issues that are associated with Online Learning, Poly's students and faculty were luckier than ever to have such a capable and accessible technology staff. Whether it was running around campus to assist teachers or virtually assisting students, they constantly prioritized our learning and connection. They easily addressed our range of issues, despite a lengthy process or an obvious user error. Mr. Fletcher said it best: "The tech folks have gone way out of their way to expand the tech capabilities available to Poly teachers. We as teachers are quite lucky to be in a school where such possibilities are possible, and where there are people (the tech folks) who have the know-how to make those possibilities a reality." This year, more than ever, we owe so much of our learning to the individuals of the tech department.

Yen '89

Mr. Carpenter

"When I was working from home and having trouble with my computer or zoom, Patrick Carpenter was available to log-in to my computer to troubleshoot the problem from wherever he was. He also helped all of my students with their software downloads so that they could edit their assignments for my photography classes. Jill, Ryan, and Cyril are also always ready and willing to help me whenever I need them and its always greatly appreciated."

- Ms. Godwin-Minto

Mr.

"Tech has done everything from provide gear (GoPros , monitors , webcams , etc.) to software (Adobe Creative Cloud) to spend over an hour remotely fixing issues on my computer , and they've done it all with great care and humor. Ryan and Cyril came into my room to install a monitor and still had it in them to laugh, even though I know they are working tirelessly ri ght now. I thought their attitudes said so much about how Poly Faculty and Staff have maneuvered COVID."

- Ms. LaBarbara-Palmer

"I always got an answer to a question and/or help really quickly even though they were busy. Tech was really invested in making sure that I had what I needed all year."

-Ms. Foley

"Online learning has been made easier because I know that they are a text or email away to help

THANK YOU: Health Department

Whether it was communicating updates regarding Covid-19 or providing t e sting for athletes, Poly's health department continued to prioritize the community's health and safety. And, as faculty , staff, and students began returning to campus, Nurse Kwitny , Ms. Glo v er and Ms. Castillo continued their efforts i n maintaining the city guidelines. 1n normal years , we could always count on the Health Department for a band-aid , heat pack , or wrap , but this year , we owe them a huge thank you for g oing above and beyond to ensure the health and safety of our community.

THANK YOU: Teachers

Through the challenges of the mostly-online year, our teachers never wavered. They consistently reached out and offered assistance Although most students did not meet their teachers face-to-face until March or April , classes felt as normal as possible thanks to the phenomenal faculty. We always owe our teachers a massive thank you , but this year especially , we thank our teachers for their relentless effort throughout the online year.

The Poly Community sends Ms. Hamilton good wishes and hope for a speedy recovery.

To: Ms. Hamilton

Inspiring generations of Poly students , Grace Hamilton has been a teacher , mentor, and leader at our school since 1987. Her warmth and kindness infuse everything that she does , whether she ' s facilitating dialogues about literature in the classroom , encouraging aspiring creative writers during workshops and public readings , or leading students through the mountains of Peru or the temples of Thailand. A passionate educator who strives to help students find confidence and beauty in their own ideas and voices , Grace cares deeply and genuinely for everyone in her community, and she will be remembered for her constant joy and supp0ttive enthusiasm that enriched our school every day over the last 34 years.

To: Coco Johnson

Written by Ms. Marg e Kenny, 6-12 English D epartment Chair "Coco Johnson is the strongest and most positive person I know. Despite battling two types of cancer , Coco's smile has never left her face. Through all of the struggles and hard time s, Coco has powered through it all. I have known Coco since kindergarten, and I have grown to learn that she is one of the kindest and funniest people I have ever met. As we grew older and Coco had to leave school for treatment , she remained the same fun-hearted and kind spirit she has always been. Coco has been through so many ups and downs the past few years. Through all of these challenges , I have seen how strong of a person she really is. Coco is also incredibly brave Above all else , Coco remained positive through her entire journey of recovery, which is extremely inspirational. She is an exceptional person ." - Hannah Karoly , Coco's classmate and friend

Life Around Campus

For the majority of the school year , the campus was an array of boxes displayed on a screen. Zoom became our online campus , and while students were not able to i nteract in person , the student life groups kept us together. While The Paw Print reported on various student aspects and clubs continued to meet , class leaders worked to unify their peers and student leadership groups held the Upper School together. A new idea this year , the Summer Spotlights , report on what students accomplished over the summer of2020 Since students creatively worked around Covid roadblocks , it made sense to spotlight what they did. Find all of this and more in the folJowing Life Around Campus Section.

Summer Spotlights

As the Yearbook Staff rearranged pages to accommodate the changes of the school year , we initially realized that we would not be able to fill many of our pages as students moved online for a portion of the year and school facilitated events looked different. Therefore , we thought it might be cool to do something new. Poly students participate in fascinating extracurriculars during the school year , many of which the Yearbook already highlights. However, no prior Oakleaves Yearbook has highlighted students' summer projects and experiences. Therefore, 2020-2021 Yearbook Staff decided to include a section called Summer Spotlights where we displayed students' various summer activities. In late September, the staff sent the student body a poll where they could either contribute their own summer projects or nominate other students who had interesting plans. The photos and information are all student provided.

The Paw Print

Students, faculty , staff, parents, and alums look forward to receiving and reading The Paw Print every month. As a student publication, The Paw Print is composed of student-written articles in its four sections: News, Life, Opinion, and Sports. This year, the News section covered Covid's impact, the election, and Justice Ginsburg's death, to name a few. Life , often the most colorful section, focuses on aspects of Poly's student life through polls, games , and articles. The opinion section varies in content but encapsulates different student opinions on a variety of topics. A notable example this year was Amy Coney Barrett as a replacement for Justice Ginsburg as students documented their differing views on her nomination. Finally, the Sports section writes preseason, midseason, and postseason articles about Poly's athletics while also highlighting two Athletes of the Issue, often upperclassmen, and one athlete of the Future, usually a Freshman. Faculty advisors, executive editors, section and assistant section editors , and staff writers create and format The Paw Print every month!

Global Initiatives Program

Even though online , the Global Initiatives Program has been working hard , bringing in guest speakers, and learning more about the global world. Led by Mr. Caragher and Madame Diederich , this year's GIP scholars have expanded their global knowledge focusing on the Ripple Effect. Notable events from the year include a discussion about human trafficking, learning and understanding the Azerbaijan and Armenia conflict , and

Dr. Anthony Arend's talk on Biden's Foreign Policy. All of e vents this year have sought to inform Poly's community and scholars about international affairs and to understand their in1pacts. As international travel is cunently unsafe , the program is proposing virtual trips over the summer. Hopefully in-person trip s will be available in the summer or the 2021-2022 school year.

Athletics

With an ever-changing year , Poly ' s athletics were up in the air. While CIF compressed the sports into two seasons instead of the usual three , Poly ' s Athletic Department conducted outside , socially-distanced practices Weights were moved onto the Debbie Reed Courtyard , volleyball nets were set up outside , and badminton courts were painted onto the grass. Come December , it was still unclear whether or not CIF would allow the winter sports season to start. Nonetheless , students showed up to practices throughout the first semester in hopes of seeing friends and playing their sport. Eventually, sports resumed, and teams took the field.

Football

Coach Chris Schmoke

"This year's football season was a unique experience. We started practicing in late September and practiced on and off through the end of 2020. We started full practices on Feb.1st and after a scrimmage and a cancellation, finally played a game in early April. Through it all , the boys were diligent in their efforts and worked hard to prepare for a season that no one knew would really happen. In the end, we lost an 8- 7 heart-breaker against our arch rival in the Rose Bowl. While it was an incredibly disappointing result at the time, the overall experience was one I will never forget. It has served to remind me that not all good stories, not all hard work , not all spirited preparation ends the way you plan. The further I get from the game the more I realize that it is the journey and not the result that truly matters. Those boys left it on the field and played their hearts out and that makes them forever winners in my mind."

Jackson Stimmler '21

"Poly football has truly opened my eyes to the benefits of grinding for the people around you, rather than just for yourself. The football team is undoubtedly one of the most influential brotherhoods I have ever been apart of, and I will never forget getting the opportunity to go to battle with my brothers."

Jake Shafia '21

"This season was the longest yet shortest season I have ever had One thing we did miss was the bonding time before and after practice. Most would come together and talk about anything."

This team has taught me how to stick up for myself and be a leader, as well as modeling a support system I have be en lucky enough to benefit from over the years. Dance Team has made me who I am, and I cannot thank my teammates and coaches enough."

Sierra Dahiyat '21

"It's been a great season on dance team even through COVID! It was so nice to see everyone be so resilient and positive. I've had the pleasure of seeing the younger members grow both their dance and leadership skills, and I really couldn't have asked for a better group! I will always cherish our memories together , and I will miss the team dearly next year"

Dance team has continued their hard work to bring Poly Spirit to the entire Poly community. The team started practices over the summer and continued throughout the fall and winter. Boys Basketball

Led by Coach Brad Hall and the senior captains, Kareem Ammar, Brandon Szeto , and Dimitri Mendoza , the 2021 Boys Varsity Basketball team has done exceptionally well. Through communication and lots of practice, we dominated the court in many of our games. Despite the challenges this year, the boys persevered and still grew immensely through it all. The Panthers fought hard to create an unforgettable season.

Jack Williamson '22

"My favorite part about the basketball team is how well ev eryone gets along This is probably the closest sports team I ha ve been on at Poly and it shows when we play."

Kareem Ammar '21

Joining the Varsity Team as a freshman , Basketball has acted as a refuge from daily life where I have been able to both push myself on the court and form lasting connections with my teammates. Now as a Senior, it has been extremely valuable to lead this team with my fellow seniors to our greatest potential. We have a unique mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen all in tune to accomplish as much as we can on the court.

Boys Volleyball

Bump, set, spike! The boy's volleyball team, headed by coaches Jack Prater and Katrina Damasco-Dicipulo '02, has started the season with a fresh start and renewed spirits. Volleyball is an escape from the passive - yet unique - start of the year , and with the smiles, laughs or the occasional stray ball, a happy and supportive atmosphere is always present in the Poly Volleyball team. Members such as Jonathan Fink and Lorenzo Blanco definitely help set the uplifting team dynamic. As of now, the team holds a record of one win and two losses against rivals Chadwick, Flintridge Prep, and Rio Hondo!

Jonathan Fink '22

"Despite only having 8 players, half of them being freshman, on a varsity team, we have been able to present tough competition to our opponents. In our practices, we have been able to learn the play-styles of our teammates and how to adapt to them so that we may execute in games. The whole team would like to thank Coach Prater for being able to take our small numbers and turn us into a high functioning team."

"I would say that this season obviously wasn't traditional , but we tried our best to play volleyball. It started off really rough as we weren't allowed to have more than one partner. With only one partner we couldn ' t play much , but as soon as we could , we all had a lot of fun. The new varsity members fit right in , and we all played the best we could given the circumstances. It wasn't the season I was hoping for, but it was better than I was expecting!"

Despite starting the year socially distanced , the girl's volleyball team found a way to start the new season hopeful, and welcomed a wonderful group of interested freshmen to the team Headed by coaches Katrina Damasco -Dicipulo '02 , Paige Clingaman, and Steve Beerman , the team demonstrated their teamwork and technical skill against rivals Mayfield , Flintridge Prep , and others. The Poly equestrian team competes each year at the Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL ), a competitive horse show for students of the greater Los Angeles region. Competing against over 60 schools , the Poly team placed 8th in the overall standings last year , a very impressive achievement considering the small team. The team usually practices individually and will come together at shows , but considering shows were canceled this year , the Poly Equestrian team has continued to stay in touch and close with each other. They are looking forward to continuing to represent Poly next year at IEL.

Academics

Despite a tumultuous year , faculty, staff, and students worked tirelessly to maintain Poly's academic standard. Not only did teachers adjust lesson plans , but students adapted to the ever-changing enviromnent. From online learning to hybrid learning, the classes conserved their rigor. In light of the 50% off-Zoom requirement, which allowed students a Zoom break , teachers offered videos or projects that could be completed independently. While synchronous , classes held discussions and did presentations. Although an eventful year , student could continue to count on their teachers for an excellent experience.

History

This year ' s Upper School History classes started online this year. Althou g h very different, teachers ha v e found ways to make classes engaging and fun. The 9th-grade students start with World Religions: studying Hinduism , Buddhism , Judaism , Christianity , and Islam. By learning the foundations of each re ligion , fr eshman students have understood how each religion is affecting diversity and their community. Sophomore students are in Perspectives on Modem World History. Students started the year by completing a socially-distanced research paper. The class covers the 15th century to the present and connects the past to the current day while learning about important themes incJuding international trade and connection , industrialization and imperialism , revolutions , economics and religion , and war. Juniors are offered an American Studies elective , which focuses on American History and Lit erature. Seniors are offered City of Angels , a year-long , combined course including AP English Literature with urb an studies , History , and Science. Students observ e LA from its museums and concert halls to its buildings and riverbeds. The student-centered course analyzes and discusses LA-based literature, film , history , politics , and art. Poly also offers many elective choices for juniors and seniors such as; Economics, Contempor ary Ethical Issu es , International Relations , Globalization & Human Rights , The African-American Experience , and Greeks & Roman s in the 21st Century! The International Relations course offered in the spring explore s chief problems, actors , structures of international politics , and the evolving nature of the state , and the role of international organizations . Science

Poly's Science Department has adapted quickly to the needs and intere sts of Poly Students . Classes emphasize allowing students to get hands-on experience in labs and experiments. Remote learning did not deter the Science Department teachers from creating various at-home experiences for students to continue their learning. The focuses of the department include physics , chemistry , and biology. Integrated Science in 9th grade covers all three subjects with an overarching theme of energy throughout the year , acting as a guide to future science classes. Sophomore year classes are dedicated to increasing students ' understanding of the basic principles of chemistry. Junior year science offers two biology courses for students , Biology and AP Biology. Both address biochemical processes and emphasize independent learning. Physics classes offer both calculus and mostly non-calculus approach to physics topics. Students enjoy opportunities to explore different aspects of the world of physics. Additionally, students are offered many opportunities in the form of electives from the Science department.

With e-boo nd curbside pickup available for all, the library remains up and running, a win for the students and staff1

"When people ask me what my favorite part of being a school librarian is, I always say the students! Obviously, things looked a bit different this year so I didn't get to connect with as many students as I would have liked. But, I still tried my best to introduce students to the library resources via our online newsletter and video tutorials! Ultimately, the biggest lesson I learned this year is that the library's role as a community hub is irreplaceable. In my opinion, the library is a much better place to connect and collaborate than Zoom;)"

Student Artwork

This year, students were given the opportunity to submit photos for the yearbook to show their progress and creativity during stay-at-home measures . Featured students wrote descriptions of and shared the significance and process behind their work.

SIMONE CUNDIEFF '21

"Colors, textures , and fantasy ideas inspire my work. I love colors and the versatility they allow me when creating a piece. They can evoke specific emotions when pairing different hues and color tones. Like color , textures and multimedia can create more depth in an art piece so I try to utilize many different materials when creating. Overall though , much of my art is cre ated on the spot with not a lot of planning. I like to sketch out the idea , but pieces just kind of appears on what I think will work together well. I like to design and paint on physical objects as well , so the shoes are some of my favorite designs I have done. Creating tangible pieces of art is really fun for me because it allows my art to be more integrated into real life."

COLE MALLINGER '24

"I shot this piece for a stop action photography assignment in which we were told to stop a moving object during its most important action. In this photo I decided to take a picture of my younger brother on his skateboard. I was inspired to shoot this photo because I have always been interested in sports and by taking a photo of a skateboard I could show the detail of the skateboard while also showing my interest in sports."

EDITH STEVENSON '23

"These portraits are done with charcoal. I wanted to experiment with value and study facial proportions."

LILY KEATING

"These two pieces are part of my sustained investigation in AP art, which is to convey emotions through body language and color. This investigation was important to me because through quarantine, I have been getting to know myself and my emotions better. I associate colors and body language with emotions, and I feel that a lot of other people do as well, so with some of my pieces, I try to make it relatable and I want the viewer to automatically feel the weight or emotion of what is on the canvas when they see it without seeing a title of "sadness" or "happiness." The one with the pink/red figure with the purple background is extremely ambiguous. I created it with no intentional emotion or color, however, I feel that looking at it now, it represents a feeling of how one appears on the outside vs. how they feel on the inside. The ambiguity of this piece is exactly how I want the viewer to figure out the emotion themselves. On the other hand, the black and white piece was painted with an emotion of feeling trapped in mind. I really wanted to provide an extreme contrast between the figure and the background and allow the viewer to feel that intensity when looking at it. Both pieces are my so different from each other, but they are both my favorites so far, and I hope when someone looks at them, they feel the emotion and understand the body choice and color choice through their emotions without any written queues on what it was intended to be."

ANNIKA NELSON '22

"These are a few photos I've shot this year for my independent study. I wouldn't necessarily say there are stories behind these pieces , but I like the textures and colors of the flower and I feel like there's really a connection between the hand and the horse "

LUKE BRYSON '21

"I made these during the election and focused on three main emotions I felt during the duration. I felt horror, denial, and false confidence. My horror felt concrete and real so I used a very solid material for it. My denial felt like it would easily fold so I used a clay material. My false confidence felt like a childish facade so I spray painted it like a child would have."

SHARON CHOU '23

"I painted this for our Pop Art unit in painting class and was inspired by the work of Roy Lichtenstein , who famously used Ben-Day dots to model comic books. Rosie the Riveter is an iconic symbol of domestic strength during times of struggle , so I thought fighting COVID was a fitting theme to incorporate into a modern re-doing. Also , the red , white , blue , and yellow palette lends itself easily to a comic book style I pieced together a collage from magazine paper for our Surrealism unit in painting. The Surrealism movement explored the deeper recesses of the mind. The goal was to capture the disjointed yet extremely vivid nature of my dreams and delve into my subconsc ious. I kept a dream journal for a week and drew inspiration from those entries. It is a butterfly , with the plane as the body and the pictures as the wings. Since it was my first collage , I had a lot of fun making it!" - Sharon Chou

MO SZALLA '21

"This piece wa s mainly intended to emulate the style of antique skel etal reference posters. I really wanted there to be accuracy with the bone structures , while giving it a more digestible look with the pointillism. Yes , it is educational and scientific , but I want it to be fun to look at as well. The piece is about 5 x 7 inches and done in Ohto Graphic Liner. Untitled."- Mo Szalla

AIDAN KING '21

"I shot "solitary" when I was taking a walk in Kennebunkpo1i , Main e I happ e ned to have my camera in hand wh e n I stopped and noticed this house that reminded me of a scene in a Stephen King no v el. With that in mind , I attempted to capture the emotion in the sky while keeping the neighboring houses out of frame. When editing , I desaturated all colors except for that brick red. In my opinion , the editing not only brought attention to the loneliness of the house but also the ambiguity of the photo. "smoke break" was another photo that I did not plan for. I was dri v ing down Huntington Dr and stopped right next to this truck at a red light. Although old and dilapidated , the car's paint immediately caught my eye , leading me to notice a man smoking a cigarette. Taken at around 5pm , the light was perfectly hitting his face , illuminating his melancholy yet peaceful expression. " - Aidan King '21

MOLLY HILL '21

"Over the summer , I made a lot of pencil drawings to try to improve at drawing from life I drew this piece , of a young American Crow , after a fledgling crow fell from its nest in a tree in my yard. The fledgling was fine , but it hung around my yard for a few days , so I had time to sketch and photograph it. In the drawing , I wanted to capture its unique proportions and expressions as a young bird and keep the feather groups and patterns as accurate as possible " - Molly Hill

Fall Play

The Fall Production, entitled Awakenings, was an anthology of pieces written by Poly alumni, as well as public domain material. Students got to film using a v ariety of different methods: some used green screens , some filmed on Zoom , and some filmed conventionally. Despite the chal1enge of producing a remote production , the students rose to the challenge.

Dance Show

This year, Poly featured a collaboration of students involved in theater, music, and dance in the fall show, Awakenings. Dancers from all levels were featured in a variety of pieces , ranging from salsa, to hip hop, to contemporary. Having to perform virtually because of COVID, Poly dancers moved away from the stage, channeling their creativity to find beautiful and picturesque performance settings, including a rooftop sunset , flowing fountains, and even their own backyards! Performances were combined with unique editing and framing to make the show even more intriguing and enjoyable. A favorite among the community is the piece "Sleep Apnea" , where dancers elegantly leapt along the ocean shoreline.

Spring Musical

This year, Poly ' s theater department has directed its first ever (intentionalJy!) virtual musical , entitled Working , for the school's community to enjoy. The musical follows the livelihoods of men and women whose work the average person often overlooks, when in reality these professions are the backbone of our society--from a school teacher, to a waiter, to a housewife, and more. With the help of directors Tiffany La 8-P , Cynthia Crass, Danielle Pigneri , Andrew Villaverde, and Michael Babcock '76, students in the tech theater and musical classes sang, danced, acted, and edited a powerful visual display, utilizing green screens, various props, as well as their own creativity to present an entirely digital performance. Cast memeber Sophie David says, "I am so proud of the work the musical cast and directors did to learn a new medium and put together an incredible film. Despite the uncertainty, we came together and maintained this poly tradition."

Jazz Band

This year members of the jazz band focused on learning tunes by ear. Though they could not play together , all tried to see this as an opportunity to develop and refine approaches to impro visation In addition , the class began learning about and then using the digita l audio workstation Soundtrap to record themselves playing and impro v ising.

Ms. Bohr has decided to retire from her position as Event Coordi nator at Poly at the end of January. Ms. Bohr came to Poly 17 years ago and s he ha s worn many hats in the FaciLities Department. She has served as Operations Coordinator and , most recently, Eve nts Coordinator. Ms. Bohr took great pride in providing the best event experience ranging from coffee service to the Poly Pet and Hobby Show and ultimat e ly Commencement. As a Diversity Cohort member , she shared a critical perspective that had been missing from the discussions.

We will mi ss Ms. Bohr , but we know she wi ll be busy with her children and grandc hildren, and we wish her the best in this new chapter in her life.

Lisa Caragher

Coach Caragher shared that this year will be her last at Poly, and she will begin a new adventure at the end of the school year. She has been at Poly for 32 years. In that time she has been the Chair for Physical E ducation , coached, and served as the test coordinator for the College Board SAT, AP, and !SEE exams. Coach Caragher was also instrumental in establishing the badminton program at Poly in 1991 Her coaching duties included volleyball and soccer for the Middle School program and badminton for the Upper School program. Coach Caragher's passion for physical educat ion made her a success at Poly with her students, colleagues, parents , and the community. We wish Coach Caragher the very best as she takes on a new chapter in her life.

Letter from Ms. Fleischer

UPPER SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Dear Upper School,

What a year! As I write this letter on April 1, it would be easy to wish that the last year has been one big April Fool's joke. Except that, by and large, it hasn't been very funny. Over half a million US citizens, and 2.8 million people worldwide, have perished from COVID. As a nation, we have exposed more systemic r acism and other systems of oppression where we still have far more work to do. We don ' t ha ve to look beyond our own walls, though , to see the impact of COVID and in equality. From dear_Poly to the effects of remote schooling , we have plenty to work on even here at school.

And yet , this year has also taught us lessons of gratitude and hope . By the time this amazing book comes out, the Upper School will have a new director. Obviously , I would never have planned for my final year at Poly to be marred by the death and hardship we've seen worldwide, and yet , weathering that storm with all of you has left me with even greater appreciation for this community than I could hav e imagined.

Student voice is a central part of what makes Poly so special , and , while Poly ' s campus has been far too quiet this past year, your voice has still echoed loud and clear. You have reminded us what's important at Morning Meeting , from recognizing underrepresented parts of our history to lauding student accomplishments and performances. You have encouraged others to participate and supported those who are struggling, both in our community and in the broader world, and, when it all seemed like too much, you have asked for help for yourselves and your classmates. Student voice has also reminded us to laugh, be silly, and have fun.

You have also managed to keep perspective , leading with kindness and understanding, sharing questions driven by curiosity and openness. Understanding that COVID was impacting many other communities even more severely than it was ours, you talked about your care and gratitude for your teachers and their families. Sure, we all wanted to return to normalcy, eating snacks in Haaga, playing ping pong on the patio, and cramming into Garland for Morning Meeting or performances, but more often than not you were able to lead in your thoughts and words, caring for our community members' safety and well-being. You inspired us to do better, be kinder, and to take care of everyone needing an extra shoutout, hug, or more formal support.

And, pushed us to d? our part to fight systemic inequality and to face and examine its in our pr~ct1ces and policies. You respectfully asked us to do better in our dec1s1on-mak1ng, curn~ulum, and programming. Instead of just casting stones, you offered to. help. You gamed confidence through leaning in and initiating difficult c~nversat10ns,. and I hope you found most of us open to hearing where we showed blmdness or bias and needed work to do better.

Together, in tough times and we. are I am grateful to have been part of this place for the past five years. I will miss working alongside your talented and inspiring teach~rs. of all , remotely when necessary, in-person whenever possible I will miss working with all of you, seeing your faces every day , and calling Poly home. ' May you all have a fabulous and safe suminer. Keep making Poly proud!

Best to all of you , Ms. Fleischer

Yearbook Staff

The Yearbook Staff was tasked with the impossible: create a yearbook that reflects a virtual year. At the beginning of the year, we had almost nothing planned as there was literally nothing to plan for. We predicted that students would stay at home for the foreseeable future , and we had no idea where to go. There was no Spotts section. We only had Zoom screenshots filling space. To put it simply , we did not think we would have a substantial Yearbook.

Then, sports began, students went on-campus, and finally, hybrid learning started in April. From there , we raced to add photos, create content , and finish the book for you all.

None of this would have been possible without the relentless effmi from our staff.

Our three freshmen, Carolyn, Natasha, and Sean, came into the Upper School and immediately began compiling its yearbook. Despite the fact that they had never stepped foot on the campus as Upper Schoolers or that they couldn't identify many faces, they carried on and asked questions. We lucked out with our group of freshmen this year. We are honored to have gotten to know them .

Our one sophomore , Cristina Bogaard, was on our staff for the second year. It was such a gift to have a person like Cristina working with us - she picked up pages that weren't getting finished , she wrote paragraphs without being asked, she was readily available to help us with any task. Cristina was truly an integral part of our staff, and we were so lucky to have her working with us these past two years.

Our junior staff member, Margaret Sweeney, was a late addition to our staff, but thank goodness that she decided to join. Margaret has an infectious personality filled with positivity. When a group of people are stressing over a yearbook, you need someone like Margaret to lighten the mood. We relentlessly counted on her , and she never failed to deliver. We truly appreciate her, and we are beyond pleased to have her join Jackie Sabbag next year as Co-Editor.

Finally, our senior Lauren Kidman was truly a saving grace. She not only did the majority of her pages ahead of time, but she then helped out other staff members who were having trouble finishing their work. Come second semester, seniors often pull back on work , but Lauren pushed ahead at the same pace. Lauren was a joy to work with and have around We will miss Lauren next year and thank her for all of her hard work.

To our staff:

You created a yearbook for a virtual year. That, in and of itself, is a massive accomplishment. Through countless Zoom meetings and revised instructions, you never once slowed your pace or gave up. We are beyond grateful and proud to have worked with you on this book. We hope you love what you created as much as we do . Seriously, thank you.

To our community:

Thank you. Cliche as it may sound, this book would not have printed without your help. Following countless Morning Meeting Announcements and emails calling for student contributions, we received photos and content from you all, most of which fills these pages We hope you love the book , and again, thank you for all of your help.
