and Reflect

II

Ask any student, and they'll tell you how life at Poly moves at an ever-quickening pace... but if you take a moment to pause and reflect, you can see that Poly is more than an academically focused institution. Students here do it all, balancing their time between athletics, dance shows, debate, Model UN, science olympiad, and musicals with enjoying time with their friends (including Dr. Nguyen) and participating in friendly competition (this year's Rivalry Week was arguably the best yet). High school at Poly goes by in the blink of an eye, so pause and enjoy it.

Chris Schmoke is arguably -and deservingly- the most popular man on campus; his big stature, personality, and decibel level make him hard to miss Even if Upper School students have never had the privilege of taking freshman Conceptual Physics or Integrated Science courses with Mr. Schmoke, they know him from his role on campus as a model of community, spirit, and good faith.

Throughout his 12 years serving the Poly community, from teaching Chemistry and Physics courses to coaching Varsity Football to his new role as Upper School Dean of Student Life, Chris Schmoke is the heart of our community. In the classroom, he interweaves abstract scientific concepts with relevant, personal stories and quips that inform, humor, and inspire his students -a style of teaching impossible to imitate. On the field, he's not just a coach, but a mentor

to his players, committed to designating practice time for team study halls and community outreach.

When he's not in the classroom or on the field, you might find Mr. Schmoke wholeheartedly cheering on his home team, the Detroit Lions, playing bass in his band, Grampas Grass, which, we might add, is a performance that most students are dying to attend, or spending time with his four kids, all of whom attend Poly.

It would be difficult to find another figure in the Upper School as universally respected and admired by students. Thank you, Mr Schmoke, for teaching us how to balance our academic goals with our responsibility toward our community, for teaching us how to compete while remaining kind to one another, and most recently, for teaching us how to drive carefully on school mornings and not park on Arden

Cynthia Crass is what both the theater world and the Poly community would call a triple threat. From directing, conducting, and choreographing performances across the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools to her roles as Varsity Dance Team coach and department chair of course development, Ms. Crass inspires, challenges, and uplifts students and faculty alike, embodying the core traits that make Poly an exceptional school.

Throughout her 29 years at Poly, Ms. Crass has worn

a number of hats with incredible skill. Aside from teaching drama, acting, and musical theater courses, Ms. Crass, with her distinct enthusiasm and animation, teaches Theater History and Application , writing electives at Poly Summer, Human Sexuality and Relationships, and previously taught English

Off campus, Ms. Crass sings in her local church choir as a soprano soloist and is an accomplished pianist, accompanying the cast of this year's Spring Musical The Little Mermaid,

for which she also coached the female soloists. Her astounding knowledge of music is evident in her versatility and commitment to student productions. Her contributions to the Poly community don't stop at her unprecedented influence and dedication to the Performing Arts Department. Between rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers and spending time with her daughter Gianna, a Poly alumna, she is committed to her students , colleagues and administrative progress; she founded Poly's Faculty

Curriculum Committee, serves on both the school's Judiciary Committee and Headmaster's Advisory Committee, and acquired a Master's Degree in Curriculum Development with a focus on diversity and inclusion during her time at Poly. She is a beloved model of both integrity and candor with lightheartedness and humor.

Ms Crass does it all, and in her presence, the music never stops. Thank you, Ms. Crass!

First Day of School

For Poly students, returning to school elicits a variety of emotions. As the newest members of the Upper School community, freshmen may arrive to campus either apprehensive about stepping into a brand new environment or grateful for a newfound sense of independence, while seniors, the campus veterans, ease into familiar high school routines with hopes of avoiding "senioritis." This year, a new Block Day schedule and

construction on Garland and, consequently, morning meetings on Arden Lawn marked a new chapter of Poly's vision for both student learning and community.

As Poly students returned back to school from adventure-filled, homework-free summers of GIP trips, summer camps , and leisure, they looked forward to seeing their friends every day, and of course, a change in scenery.

Student Leaders

"This year's ASB is the best we've ever seen at Poly. It's filled with driven and determined people, all of whom want to both see Poly students represented in the best light possible and leave a lasting impact here. The chemistry between the group is superb, allowing us to work well with one another This year's cabinet members also possess an array of skill sets, which when put together, allow us to tackle a wide variety of issues efficiently and successfully It's really nice to have an ASB that consists of people from various backgrounds, enabling us to confront ideas and issues from a diverse set of perspectives . While there is definitely a lot of work to be done and plenty of things we hope to achieve, we couldn't imagine any other group better prepared to do the job "

-ASB Cabinet ' 19

Why is leadership important?

"Leadership in general is important, but it is especially important at poly. The opportunities and resources we have allow us to legitimately make change and have an effect on our community. Leadership is not just defined by public speaking; in fact, there is a wide variety of types of leadership like leading by example, silent leaders , etc. Everyone at poly has the qualities to be a leader in one field or another."

-Chandler Washington, ASB President '19

Oakleaves

In late October, the Upper School gathered on McWilliams Courtyard to attend Oakleaves, the first formal dance of the 20182019 school year. Hosted by the Yearbook Staff, the event serves as the book 's primary, annual fundraiser. Staying true to the dance's theme , "All of the Lights," lanterns, glowsticks, and string lights adorned the

event space. Additionally, the dance featured student DJs Rachel Tokofsky and Sophia Duncan, a photobooth, and a chocolate fountain.

With a record turnout of nearly 300 students , the Oakleaves dance was both a successful fund raiser for the Yearbook Staff and a fun and memorable night for Upper School students .

Sophomore Trips

After the first month of school, the sophomore class traveled to one of five destinations to spend a week exploring , challenging themselves physically, and learning a new set of outdoor leadership skills.

The trips, which ranged from surfing in San

Elijo and backpacking in Havasupai Falls to kayaking in the

Channel Islands , allowed sophomores to push themselves outside of their comfort zones , spend time with their classmates, and learn about unique ecosystems

Additionally, students gained a newfound sense of independence, as they were tasked with planning and preparing their own meals for the first time on a Poly outdoor education trip

Junior Trip

The junior class embarked on their weeklong white water rafting trip on Klamath River in Northern California in late October.

After bidding farewell to their technology, the juniors loaded into buses and settled in for the nine-hour ride. Upon arriving, students set off on their first of five days of paddling, spending four to five hours navigating challenging rapids before arriving at base camp for the evening.

On their trip to Klamath, students rigged their own

boats and prepared their own food, demonstrating their outdoor leadership skills on their final fall class trip.

"Despite my group forgetting all of our refrigerated foods, we were able to share food with other pods, which ultimately brought us much closer as a class," said Megan Kelleher.

"The rafting was particularly challenging at times, but the moments when we successfully paddled through a rapid made all of the difficulties worth it!"

Clear eyes, fu I hearts, can't lose

In the 2018 -19 season , the Varsity football team went 8 - 2 overall , winning a share of the league title for the third consecutive year. While the boys showed consistent resilience , passion, and strength , they began the season nervously with just seven seniors. Nevertheless, "[The team] had great leadership and the younger guys stepped up when they needed to ," said Assistant Coach Eddie Pickett.

Though raw talent contributed immensely to the squad's success , the chemistry between the players allowed the team to both make impressive comebacks on the field and maintain their motivation throughout the season

Starting running back Jackson Treister added, "This year 's team was the most hard-working team I have ever been a part of. We were pretty young and fairly inex perienced , but the hard work made up for it."

This season Treister broke two school records for most rushing yards and most touchdowns in a

single game with an impressive 359 yards rushed and si x total touchdowns Junior Thomas McConnell also broke the record for most tackles in a season with a whopping 112 cumulative tackles Additionally, seniors Robby Wilson and Franco Alonso proved equally valuable to the team from both leadership and talent standpoints

The boys quickly transformed into a family with an excellent coaching staff supporting them on and off the field

" Some players need a pat / on the back, some need a • kick in the butt, some need to be left alone , and some need a combination of the three," said Assistant Coach Antonio Harrison " It is my job as a coach to understand the players, their needs , and adjust my coaching accordingly I try my best to treat every player as I would my own sons : I take care of the person before the player, and the rest will fall into place "

Dance, dance, dance!

Dance Team is a twoseason sport, running through the fall and winter seasons, including playoffs. The team is a collection of athletes whose training on the team begins in June the year before to begin learning material. Camp occurs in early August and is where much of the new material is learned.

The fall and winter seasons see the team continuing to add new material during practice time and attending a variety of games supporting various other teams. Not counting playoff games, the team will attend over 40 games and

perform at all-school and Upper School assemblies.

At the same time, team members participate in the Dance Concert in December. By the end of the winter season, the team will have learned and mastered over 30 different dances.

Perhaps more importantly, the team focuses on upholding their covenants of Pride and Unity and working to develop leadership skills that will serve them beyond their high school years.

Been there, du

This year's girls Varsity volleyball team went above and beyond expectations After losing two key seniors last season , no one anticipated the team's hardearned appearance in the CIF finals.

Earning a 10-2 record in league , the Panthers' confidence did not falter in the postseason as they defeated El Segundo, Santa Barbara, St. Margaret's, and Bishop Montegomery in the first four rounds of playoffs.

The team ended their successful season after falling short to Quartz Hill in the final round of playoffs.

Senior captain Alexis Pappachan said, "I was really proud of how far

the team went this year, especially because we were fairly young and unfamiliar with one another. "

Additionally, the team experienced a change in coaching staff. Former assistant coach Katrina Damasco led the girls with passion and optimism as she stepped into her new role as Head Coach

Kate Salembier, captain and team MVP, fondly commented, "Coach Kat seamlesly transitioned to head coach because the entire team already loved and respected her so much. Her leadership helped the girls and me grow as both players and people."

On guard

Under the guidance of coaches Laura Holmgren, Jeffrey Gin, and Edward Villaverde and senior captains lan Kim and Majid Bhatti, Poly's Fencing team, largely comprised of underclassmen, experienced a successful season of personal growth and tournament recognition. Throughout the season, fencers worked toward mastering their complex footwork, blade control, and strategic thinking in between tournaments, the most anticipated being those against rival club, Gryphon.

In the team's first headto-head with Gryphon,

freshmen Duncan McPherson and Martin Ladekarl placed second and third, respectively, in the novice foil division.

By the end of the fall season, the Panther's earned four individuals medals. The team continued to earn recognition throughout their season. At the USFA Open Saber event, senior captain lan Kim took gold and earned his E ranking in saber, winning the championship.

Additionally, at the USFA E and Under Men's Foil event at Gryphon, sophomore Rufus Marcussen finished third, earning his E ranking, while senior Desmond Mantle finished sixth.

Mud, sweat, and tears

Despite losing key seniors, the cross country team started the season strong, maintaining their momentum and success from the previous year.

Over summer break, the girls team spent a week in Northeast Wyoming, where they trained with a local high school team.

Captains Martha Gluck, Shaya Naimi, Evan Hayes, and Nicky Yoong led the team in adjusting to the loss of senior leaders from the previous year, quickly stepping up to fill their place.

"Cross country is never easy and not always fun, but I really enjoyed leading the girls team this year," said G l uck.

The Panthers were also joined by new assistant coach Heather Sweet, who elevated conditioning by adding aquatic training.

At the Rosemead Invitational, junior Sophie Phinney finished with the fastest female time, completing the three-mile race in 17:49. Phinney was one of 10 Poly runners to medal in the nighttime race.

Overcoming fatigue and injuries, both the girls' and the boys' team finished third in the Prep League finals.

Junior Evan Hayes and eight members of the girls' team went on to compete in the CIF finals in Riverside, where the team finished the season on a high note.

After losing three seniors, girls Varsity golf entered their 2018 season with a five-person team, the minimum number required to play a match. Despite their small roster, which included freshman Maddy Kwei, juniors Muscaan Birdi, Bianca Murray, and Taryn Kim, and senior Chloe Cho, players wholly committed to the team's success.

Never missing a match, the Panthers tied for second in Prep League with an overall record of 5-3.

"Even though we only had a five players on our golf team, we had the most determined players," said Kwei. "We worked very hard as a team and always

encouraged each other."

The team faced a tough loss in their second league match against Mayfield Senior School but recovered with decisive victories against Chadwick, Westridge, and Buckley with scores of 238270, 246-258, and 250-275, respectively.

Additionally, the team advanced three members - Kwei, Kim, and Cho- to the Prep League Qualifier Tournament for CIF, where Kim qualified for All-League honors, and Kwei won League MVP after finishing in the first round of CIF in Thousand Oaks.

Let's get this, Brad

This past winter season , the boys Varsity basketball team clinched a playoff berth with a win in the last game of their regular season , bringing to an end three months of not just wins and losses , but also great fun.

Though they only fared well in league , finishing third, the team performed exceptionally in non-league competition , with an overall record of 18 - 8.

Remarkably, the team was composed not of seasoned upperclassmen with chemistry accrued over many years of play, but of at least two athletes from each grade, which allowed for significant contribution from

representatives from all parts of the school.

Led by co - captains (of the same first name) Nicholas Tu and Nicholas Richard-Craven, the team also experienced great success in the various tournaments in which they part icipated , winning the Huntington Park Tournament and finishing second in both the Webb Basketball Classic Invitational and Poly 's own invitational.

Though their season was not a competitively phenomenal one , the boys came together as a team and made friendships that will last for decades to come, fulfilling what sports is actually all about.

Dropping Dimes

After a successful season last year, girls basketball sought to build off what led them to the CIF semifinals the year before.

After losing graduating star player Sarah Johnson, the four upperclassmen and four underclassmen had to make adjustments and establish a new game plan for the season. Senior center Alexis Pappachan and juniors Kylie Kishi and Keara Caragher quickly took on key leadership roles, earning all-tournament honors at the Poly Invitational Tournament.

The team ultimately finished the season with a 5-7 league record and

qualified for CIF. The team later advanced to the first round of the CIF tournament but unfortunately lost in a hard fought game to Patriot High School.

For the first time in many years, there was also the addition of a JV team, which included four juniors, one sophomore and five freshmen. The JV team, sadly, didn't win a game. However, while playing, it was evident that they were full of spirit and determination. Despite having a rough first season, the JV girls basketball team hopes to continue improve and grow in the future.

It's not a game, 1t's survival

In the first tournament of the year, the seventh annual Holiday Water Polo Invitational, Poly defeated four high-ranking teams to ultimately win the championship.

Going undefeated in league , the Panthers have also won every league game by an average of 15 goals. Junior Talie Wilmans explains, "I think we are such a strong team because of our team chemistry We truly play for each other and that gives us a huge advantage over our opponents."

Wilmans is the leading scorer on the team, followed by sophomore Caroline "Boo" Kelleher. "Boo and Talie have guided many of the less experienced players

and brought up the overall skill level of our team," said senior captain Ella Cornwell.

Cornwell is one of seven seniors on the team of 14, and a pivotal member of the squad serving as the primary goalie.

In their second tournament, the girls suffered a few losses- a result of half their starting lineup sitting out due to injuries. Nevertheless, the team headed into CIF playoffs hoping for a very strong showing.

Sophomore Audrey Kim emphasizes, "Regardless of whether or not we win or lose, I think our entire team just wants to compete, improve, and make this season our best yet."

Just as in many years past, the girls Varsity soccer team started their season strong, with decisive victories in non-league games over Mark Keppel (7-0) and Temple City High School (6-1), foreshadowing a promising 2018-2019 season.

In preparation for the start of league matches, the team traveled to Irvine to compete in the Best in the West Soccer Classic in early December, where they placed second in their pool after a close, 3-2 match against La Serna.

Coaches Pat Gray, Heidi

Strauss, and Jamie Bell and senior captains Vivian Wheeler, Catalina Alonso, Annie Hodgen, Simone Robinson, and Sophia Duncan led the team in their victories against Mayfield and Chadwick and an early, tough loss to league rival Flintridge Prep.

Additionally, with the team in need of a goalie at the start of the season, junior and central midfielder Sophia Ramirez transitioned from the field to between the posts.

Chlorine: breakfast of champions

The Poly Swimming and Diving team had an incredibly eventful season this 2018-2019 school year! The season began with the squad's welcoming of new Head Coach Lynda Gilbert from Mayfield Senior School. Senior captain Lily Maechling explained, "Lynda is a wonderful coach While she is tough on us most of the time, she truly pushes us to swim our fastest!"

Gilbert's intensity has proved successful as the girls team won all but one of their league meets. Though the boys team fell short in their overall record, they made up for it in morale. "Our swim team works cohesively with the support

of each other and our coaches; therefore, we are motivated to work hard and achieve more," said senior captain Pranay Singh.

Despite being the only two members of the dive team, Ben Smith '20 and Sophie McAfee '21 have demonstrated their athletic prowess in every meet, consistently coming out on top.

Overall, the Panthers had a strong showing in both prep-league and CIFs. Season highlights included the girls team's 78-74 victory over Viewpoint School, as well the boys' team's win of 94-70 over Alhambra High School. Congratulations swimmers and divers!

Flyball Flym

This year's Varsity Baseball team featured some great players and even better commitment. Although they lost a handful of talented seniors, the players rallied together to pull themselves through a great season.

The team introduced a few freshman this year year, including Max Alsoufiev, Sam Howell, Eddie Konjoyan, and Jason Mayo

These players have proved themselves this season and all hope to be a part of the team again next year.

The team also introduced a new head coach. Since

the departure of last year's head coach, Nick Wagner stepped up from assistant to head this year. He has since proved himself to be a talented trainer and coordinator.

With the graduation of last year's seniors, the players from the class of 2019 had some tough shoes to fill. From hitters like Franco Alonso to the catcher Sean Mctigue, the seniors pulled together to lead the team to a successful season. Because of the dedicated group of guys and the talent brought forward, the team had a successful season.

Poly's Varsity softball team proved yet again to be a wonderful group of girls with amazing talent. The 2019 season was filled with excitement and fun for both spectators and players.

The team introduced four freshman this season, including Sophie Yun, Annika Nelson, Alicia Zhang and Chize Ogbogu "The team members were incredibly welcoming and the atmosphere of the team was terrific," Nelson remarked.

They integrated into the tight kit group seamlessly, with their natural athleticism

helping the team excel.

Senior Vivian Wheeler is one among the three returning seniors this year, playing her fourth Poly softball season. "The softball team has been one of the most supportive and tightknit groups that I've had the chance to be a part of at Poly. Because we have each other's backs on and off the field, we have been able to overcome many obstacles and go above and beyond expectations of us," she said. Congratulations on a great season!

In the 2018-19 spring season, the boys Varsity tennis team dominated the 2019 Prep League with a perfect season. Under the leadership of their three veteran captains and one returning team member, the Panthers defeated the highly-ranked St. Francis Knights 11-7 in the spring season opener. Additionally, with the return of both Kareem Ansari '21 and Mustafa Ansari '19, the tennis team strengthened their squad and quickly set the tone for their upcoming season.

While they did not welcome any new players this season, the team, which is predominantly

upperclassmen, utilized their highly experienced group of athletes throughout the 2018-19 season. "I respect the captains, but since there isn't a huge age gap within the team, there isn't really a sense of disparity," said Junior Renzo Soatto. Additionally, the boys earned an impressive 16-2 victory over league rival Buckley.

Senior captain Kian Soltani said, "The most rewarding part of playing tennis is getting the opportunity of joining a very tight knit brotherhood which is what the team becomes each and every year."

Congrats on a successful season, boys!

Go Long or Go Home

While this year's boys golf team may be small, they can hit the ball! The squad opened their league season with a win of 224-228 over league rival Buckley School. In the match, both junior Phillip Zhou and freshman Henry Horn shot 39, ultimately securing their close victory over Buckley.

Zhou has proved invaluable this season. He said, "I think everyone on this team has something to offer, whether it be Zach with his uncontrolled brute strength, Nick Tu's innate golf potential, or even Henry with his AirPods and classic freshman humor."

Horn is currently the only freshman among the team's

two juniors and four seniors. Horn described his experience as "interesting because I'm playing with very experienced golfers, and I learn how to take criticism in difficult situations."

Although the boys suffered their fair share of losses this season, for the team, the year has been so much more about improvement and enjoyment than victories and titles.

Senior Chandler Washington added, "Everybody is working really hard to improve our team The overall chemistry is one of the best I've seen, which I believe has a lot to do with the senior leadership on the course."

History and English

Poly's History Department takes teaching the seemingly fact-heavy subject of history to the next level, focusing not only the what and when , but also the how and why.

In their freshman year, students learn how to forumulate a research paper, which quickly evolves into lengthy, more complex papers later on.

The English Department strives to instill in students a strong foundation

in grammar, writing fundamentals , and critical thinking, while also tackling more topical themes such as the American dream and human nature. Classes focus on student-led discussions and both creative and analytical writing The apex of Poly English is the annual junior speech , in which juniors craft speeches that not only appeal to the audience's logic but also to their subjective emotions

Science gives students the building blocks for a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics Hands - on labs and experimentations allow students to visualize and comprehend the complex way the natural world works. In addition, Poly's computer science , kinesthesiology, and psychology classes provide a different lens than traditional sciences

Poly's Math Department is designed to fit the pace of each student. Different tracks of varying skill levels allow students to learn at their own pace while still being challenged. There is an emphasis on collaborative learning, where students work together to find solutions to complex problems.

World Language and the Library

Upper School students are required to take three years of language, with offered courses in Latin, French, Spanish, and Mandarin.

Students are encouraged to pursue their linguistic passion: Some are enrolled in courses across multiple languages, while others opt to take courses in Arabic or Japanese through the Global Online Academy, an online education program offering language electives.

After bidding farewell to Ms. Fran Lyons, this year, the Upper School welcomed new librarians Sarah Peters and Alejandra Alfaro.

Ms Peters and Ms. Alfaro hope to encourage more students to take advantage of the library's resources.

"It didn't take me long to realize that Poly is truly such a special place. I am also so impressed by how thoughtful the students are, and I feel grateful to be their librarian," says Alfaro.

Fall Play

This year's fall production was Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time." Directed by Tina Cocumelli , the small cast of 12 Poly students opened the show on Nov. 7 and performed through Nov. 10. The plot revolved around Christopher Boone , a 15 year old boy with autism. The story began with Boone's interest in solving the murder of Wellington, his neighbor's dog. The play then pivoted to address his father, Ed, and his mother, Judy, and their strained relationship.

The Fall Play

Aidan Rawlinson ' 20, who played Christopher, described The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time as "one of the most fulfilling yet challenging experiences " he has ever had as an actor. The play was lauded for how it addressed parentchild relationships, and the complexity of raising a child on the spectrum. Overall, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" was an enriching experience for all those who performed, participated , and had the pleasure to watch

Winter Play

This winter, Cynthia Crass and Tiffany LaBarbara-Palmer directed Poly's winter production of Mary Zimmerman's "Metamorphoses," a modern retelling of Ovid's greek myths. The play was performed in the round on the Garland stage from Feb. 6- Feb. 9, and each scene moved throughout a pool, utilizing the water to catalyze transformation. The play consisted of 10 scenes, each anachronistically depicting classic greek myths. As a result, there was no continuous overarching

plot, and the 18 cast members were able to play many completely different characters. Kate Salembier '20 described this structure "as a great way to stretch and challenge ourselves as actors. We were forced to make physical and vocal distinctions between all of our characters and this provided us with an opportunity to explore many types of characters in many types of scenarios." The show also featured beautiful original music that was written and performed by Lucas Humayun '19.

Disney's The Little Mennaid Spring Musical

In the spring, the Poly theater department staged a large scale production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. The classic adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story centers around the mermaid Ariel (Addie Lillard) who is fascinated with the life and freedom up above the waters controlled by her father, King Triton (Cole Swanson).

One day while visiting the surface with her best friend Flounder (Rory O'Neil), Ariel witnesses a ship controlled by the human Prince Eric (Fionn Yapkowitz), his

guardian Grimsby (Justin Olah), and a band of rowdy sailors. She falls hopelessly in love with Prince Eric but almost loses him and her voice due to the diabolical sea witch Ursula (Catalina Alonso). The suspense of the plot is softened by the comic relief provided by the crab Sebastian (Henry Bryant) , the seagull Scuttle (Aidan Rawlinson), and the land chief, Louis (Kate Salembier).

The right mix of scares, laughs, and classic Disney songs make a magical time had by all on land and under the sea.

In Times Like These WSL Dance Show

On December 7- 9, the Women's Service League hosted "In Times Like These," their annual dance show and silent auction For the past three years, the WSL has supported iThuba Innovation Hub, a STEM school for South African ch i ldren.

In addition to the silent auction, highlights of the night included seven original student-choreographed pieces. Each piece incorporated different dance styles, as well as performers from varying skill levels

WSL advisor Mrs Kristen Osborne-Bartucca says, "I could not be more pleased with this year's dancer show

and silent auction! The dancers, tech crew, and WSL worked incredibly hard the energy and joy were so palpable in everyone involved."

With the help of Ms. Danielle Pigneri, two special guest choreographers, and the rest of the Performing Arts Department , "In Times Like These" proved incredibly successful and strikingly beautiful.

In the end, the WSL was able to raise over $5,700, all of which went to support iThuba Innovation Hub and their development of computer coding classes, specialized field trips, and more

Visual Arts

Poly offers countless ways for everyone in the community to explore their artistic side with electives, such as enameling, ceramics, woodworking, drawing, painting, photography, digital art, and more. The wide variety of unique courses has been designed to provide students with an outlet for creative expression.

The visual arts are an enriching component of student life, and Poly artists' work can be seen throughout the South Campus. The art gallery in Boswell is filled with paintings, photography, and sculpture installations created by both faculty and students.

Recognizing the range of artists in our Upper School, Poly has varying class levels for students of different experiences

Senior APArt student

Charlotte Holder explains, "Before AP Studio Art, I think I had a very narrow vision of what art is and what we deem good art to be. I am so grateful for the Poly arts program because it has really allowed me to explore myself as an artist and learn to love everything that I create."

After 13 years at Poly we say farewell to the jazz band director Rob Hayes. "Poly is one of the most amazing high schools I've ever seen. When I arrived, the group could barely play 12-bar blues, and instrumentation was far from standard. While we never achieved actual jazz configuration (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones/rhythm section), we got really close a few times. It took some years, but we became a multi-awardwinning group, and an off-shoot was the award winning Poly Combo. Many thanks to Cynthia Crass and Mariana Robles for the opportunity, and thanks to Ria Kubota and Alan Geier for the guidance and support. It has been a great ride!"

Dear Reader,

After countless hours in the yearbook room crafting a cosmically genius and humble yearbook, we believe that we have a product what both accurately and aesthetically depicts the 2018-2019 Polytechnic Upper School year. Yearbook is more than a collection of pages; it is the culmination of hundreds of hours of blood, sweat, and yes, tears.

A huge thanks to our undersized but not underappreciated staff for all the late weekend nights and sacrificed free periods. We completed a monumental task that typically more than a dozen people struggle over with a staff of just six people. We couldn't have done it without you all. Good luck next year, Megan and Maggie! We know you will do a great job even if you have a two person staff.

Thank you to our advisor, Ms. Godwin-Minto, for not only providing us with the book's photographic content, but for your continued support and patience throughout the year. You encouraged us to both create pages that we would be proud of and support each other in our work.

A special thanks to our Balfour Publishing guru Corey Mundwiler for advising us throughout the process, photographer Michelle Feynman for supplying the yearbook with additional photos, and Joe Bartucca for his work creating unique and memorable parent dedication pages. Thanks to fellow seniors Diego Jaime and Taylor Stimmler for extra help in photography and meeting challenging deadlines.

"Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew

When I bit off more than I could chew

But through it all, when there was doubt

I ate it up and spit it out

I faced it all and I stood tall

And did it my way"

-Frank Sinatra

You try to make a yearbook. It ain't that easy.
