A!thoughit has been said that ignorance is bliss, in reality, education is the key that will open doors to opportunity and our futures. The faculty are the foundation of a Polytechnic education, contantly striving to extend to their students the knowledge they have amassed over the Through the variety of teaching styles and subject matter offered at Poly, students are encouraged to grow and develop into independent thinkers in a wide spectrum of disciplines. The teacher/student relationships built here are very special and although at times only the complaints and misgivings of the students are heard, the underlying appreciation is ever present. The faculty's commitment to their students is seen in their desire to helpbeyond the classroom, whether it be in a scheduled meeting, or just a few words in passing. They are sincerely interested in each student's understanding of the subject matter, and act not only as educators, but also as advisors and friends.

The pain will be felt by all when the voices tell behind the wall. Voices in the Wall... Voices in the Wall... Voices in the Wall. What

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.

Now eat of the meat of the fruit, so sweet, all of it, to the heart.

To my familyYou mean more to me than I can ever say.

To all of my friends-

When you come to the end of a perfect day, And you sit alone with your thought, While the chimes ring out with a carol gay For the joy that the day has brought, Do you think what the end of a perfect day can mean to a tired heart, When the sun goes down with a flaming ray, And the dear friends have to part?

Well, this is the end of a perfect day, The end of a journey, too; But it leaves a thought that is big and strong, With a wish that is kind and true, For mem'ry has painted this perfect day With colors that never fade, And we find at the end of a perfect day The soul of a friend we've made.

Assemblies and

Assemblies and morning meetings at Poly provide a platform for the students' ideas. These times are set aside for the Poly community to come together and hear about other people's interests and activities. Morning meeting serves as a school bulletin in which we are exposed to a plethora of events that take place both on and off campus daily. Each Monday morning after the usual announcements, the mic is turned over to anyone who wishes to share a story, sing a song or present their point of view. "Monday Moments" set the mood for the week, providing a kind of intimacy for the students.

Morning Meetings

Assemblies include studentrun productions, your favorite and mine, Zoot, the Yale Exit Players and a variety of serious speakers as well. One of the greatest displays of all-school unity was seen on Cultural Awareness Day, an event organized by Mrs. Lou Fox. On this day, academics were put aside in order to focus on an issue that is just as important. Each person was able to retain individual identity while acknowledging the ties to his/her heritage. Through these times that the students are all together, we gain a greater understanding of each other as well as the world around us.

Accomplishments: This hardworking group of officers revised the Student Handbook, ran morning meetings and assemblies, acted as a liason between the students and the administration, and the biggest challenge, according to President George Kenyon, was setting the budget and distributing the money to the various clubs and organizations in the school.

Girl's Service League: (Front Row) Concession Stand Supervisors Lindsay Robbins and Alyson Wycoff (Middle Row) Vice-President Melissa Jones, Secretary/ Treasurer Devon Hollingsworth, Ways and Means Lauren Nicholas (Back Row) Co-Presidents Kim Wycoff and Katrina Kuehn.

Poly's Community Outreach program functions at a variety of levels, from the super-active volunteers to those who simply fulfill their requirments. Whatever the case, each Poly student dedicates 38 hours of their time to service in the community, discovering the satisfaction of selfless dedication. The faculty, as well as class and ASB Community Outreach representatives provide students with nearly endless options and opportunities. Sometime before the be ginning of the senior year, students must commit thirty hours of their time to one project. More often than not, this experience leads to a dedication to the project that carries

over into the student's senior year, a year which has no set requirement. Some areas of focus include tutoring at nearby public schools, acting as a big brother/sister to children who have been removed from their families, writing letters for Amnesty International, working with Sierra Club and other such environmental groups, as well as involvement with rape and AIDS hotlines, other AIDS help projects, Union Station, and local hospitals. Giving back to a community that has given so much to us is a very important concept that we can carry with us for the rest of our lives. Cp

Organizations

"Storybook" is a year-old annual publication, describing the various community service activities of the student body. It is a compilation of experiences put together in order to expose others to the options of outreach.

The title "Storybook :i is telling because it introduces the fact that each student has a "story" to tell about the time they have given to others. It connotes the feel that the contents do not consist merely of facts, but of feelings.

Clubs

Geno: Aren't you sick of backing losers? (Laughs. Rolls eyes.) When will they ever learn?

The Young Democrat's Club was a seasonal group that became most involved during election time. Meetings ranged from the viewing of the Saturday Night Live episode that had a segment on the election to planning parties to celebrate the election of Democratic candidate Bill Clinton. Profits made from a bake sale put on by the club toward beverage; and snacks at the clubs' post election party and Inaugural Day party. The club brought the issue o politics to the whole school by putting on an assembly in which California representatives, who were running for state and national positions, spok about their views on issues that were raised by the students.

Blossoming Democrats celebrate their most recent victory.

Young Democrats' Club: Presidents- Lindsey Feldmeth and Catherine Blue

Peer Counseling: Instructor- Dr. Bakaly

The Women's Issues Club focused the majority of their time throughout the year discussing pressing topics that face women in today's world. Meetings, that took place primarily at lunch, were spent talking about rape and abortion and what can be done about them. The event that stood out the most and involved a great deal of planning was the presentation of a guest speaker that addressed the issues of sexual harassment and how to prevent it. The money made by the club was primarily used for this guest speaker, however it was decided that any extra proceeds would go towards a shelter for battered women.

Peer Counseling is a club that pro-

1 vides students with beginning instruction, from a trained psychologist, on how to better deal with people and to help them to answer their own problems. The group meets once a week and through various activities and discussions learns about how to counsel others. The purpose of the club is to provide a service to the student body. Students with problems or who just need someone to talk to are encouraged to meet with a peer counselor. The peer counselors also meet with fourth graders this year to help enforce class unity.

Women's Issues Club: Presidents- Cela Oceguera and Anna Christy

The Latino Club: Presidents- Rick Corral and Andrew Nagata

The Latino Club's main function of the year was a dinner/fundraiser at Poly whose purpose was to raise money for the children of a primarily Latino church in a disadvantaged neighborhood in East Los Angeles.

The Italian Club: Presidents- Jennifer Giampaolo and Ashley Westfall

The Italian Club has expressed pride in their heritage by recognizing the incredible culinary contributions made by their mother country. This took the form of an Italian lunch, as well as a night in which traditional Italian food was prepared and consumed.

The International Club: President- Noel Morrison

The International Club is an organization created to support the American Field Service (AFS). This is done by accommodating the needs of the foreign exchange students who choose to go abroad in the summer following their junior year, as well as those students from abroad who come to Poly.

The Asian Club: Presidents- Hereen Oh and Miki Kanemitsu

The Asian Club has spent a lot of time and energy in the last two years organizing and putting on what is called "A Little Taste of Asia". On the evening that this dinner takes place, students, friends and family are invited to indulge in the flavors of Asia for a small price. The money that is made at this event is donated to an Asian charity.

The Afrikan American Culture Club: Presidents- Chinue Wells and Joy Jones

The Afrikan American Culture Club has been very active this year. They treated the student body to an assembly on the subject of stereotypes, and also played an integral part in Poly's first Cultural Awareness Day. The club took an outing to see Spike Lee's motion picture, "Malcolm X", and held weekly lunch-time meetings to plan events and discuss issues concerning race, culture, and society.

The Armenian Club: Presidents- Gia Chemsian and Tiffany Churukian

The Armenian Club met throughout the year to share their Armenian- heritage while in food from Burger Continental and planning other activities. Not only did each member of the club prepare an Armenian dish for Cultural Day, but they organized for a special guest to come and teach them how to dance in an Armenian style.

The

Art Club

President- Due Brunzell

The

Literary Club

President- Naomi Fink

The Literary Club, another new edition to the list of clubs at Poly, was created for the appreciation of the art of the written word. Functions included poetry readings, group writings, and lunch time discussions.

Olden

Polynice Fan Club

Presidents: David Fauvre, Victor Oviedo, Bob Duffy

The Olden Polynice Fan Club suffered a blow last summer when Olden was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Detroit Pistons, but this die-hard group has remained strong in their support for Olden. When the Pistons came to town this year this club brought a large contingent to root for their man with signs and "Olden" chants.

Through the years art has served as an outlet for expressing individual and societal beliefs. In looking back on history, we merely need examine the art of the time to comprehend the atmosphere of the era. A work of art, whether it be painted, written, composed, or sculpted, is not only created for aesthetic purposes, but is an outward representation of the artist's feelings and emotions. Art is universal because everyone has something to express. Poly encourages student expression by offering a variety of arts classes and by providing an environment contlucive to individual freedom. The visual arts transcend the barriers of words and language, while performances allow the artist to tr nsform into the separate reality of the stage. One of the reasons for the strength of this department is the incredible resources made available to the students. Freedom is allowed for the student to explore his or her talents. Poly is a school of diverse interests and art is one of ways that the individuals are able to express themselves. cp

After years of rumors and speculations, the 1992-93 year saw wrestling at Poly become a reality. There was a fairly large turnout for the newest edition to Poly's sports department with thirteen boys and one girl coming out for the team. Coaches Dan Anderson and Garrett Reisman provided technical and tactical knowhow for this group of new-comers to the mat. The team improved rapidly with hard work and dedication, and, by the end of the season, did surprisingly well against bigger, more experienced teams. Be sure to keep an eye out for the evolution of wrestling here atPoly. And tothosefourteen individuals who took part in this season, congratulations on a great start.G>

With the changing of the seasons comes the beginning of the track and field team. This team, which consists of both boys and girls, demonstrates an incredible amount of dedication as the participants practice and compete in the intense heat of the blazing hot California sun. The track and field team displays a variety of skills, incorporating running sprints and longer distances, shot put, high jump, long jump, hurdles and relays. This team has always contributed its share of candidates to the .C.l.F. prelims and finals. £1>

"Take me out to the ball game ... :" Baseball, the allAmerican tradition. One of the best things about spring is the coming of the baseball season. And this season was full of excitement and fun. Although the team had lost some senior players from last year, they still maintained a strong force, and gained talented underclassmen players as well, which led to a successful season. Play ball!

The Class of 1993!!!

The Polytechnic Alumni Association

Lauren,

I cannot believe that time has passed so quickly, And now before me stands a lovely young woman. My best friend, the daughter with whom I shared laughter and victories, tears and defeats and gentle guidance into a world of challenge and hope. I feared that I might have spoiled you through the years, But you spoiled me instead with your boundless joy, Soaring pride and a love that grew just as you did. Though miles shall keep us apart, Our bond exceeds distance and time. Life is a blessing with you by my side. With you always in my heart.

I'm so proud of you. Good luck, my friend. Love. Mom

Ithaca

When you start on your journey to Ithaca. then pray that the road is long,

1 full of adventure. full of knowledge. Do not fear the Lestrygonians and the Cyclopes and the angry Poseidon You will never meet such as these on your i path, I if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine emotion touches your body and your spirit. you never meet ·the Lestrygonians, the cyclopes and the fierce Poseidon, if you do not carry them within your soul. if your soul does not raise them up before you.

1 Then pray that the road is long. That the summer mornings are many, that you wilt enter ports seen for the first time ' with such pleasure. with such joy! Stop at Phoenician markets, and purchase fine merchandise. mother-of-pearl and corals. amber and ebony, and pleasurable perfumes as you can; visit hosts of Egyptian cities. to learn and learn from those who have knowl-

Always keep Ithaca fixed in your mind. To arrive there is you ultimate goal. But do not hurry the voyage at all. It is better to let it last for long years; and even to anchor at the isle when you are old, rich with all that you have gained on the way, not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage. Without her you would never have taken the road.

But she has nothing more to give give you.

And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not defrauded you.

With the great wisdom you have gained, with so much experience, you must surely have understood by then what Ithacas mean.

Editor's Note:

It is often said that working on the yearbook is a thankless job. We often found ourselves asking why we were putting in so many hours of our own time, especially when it hit 11 pm and we were still in the publications room. Wei!, now that it is all over we can see what all of that time and effort went into producing. We have tried to represent the people and the aspects of this school in a creative light, and we hope that you all enjoy what we have done.

We would like to thank all those who helped ensure the outcome of this book: Mr. Feldmeth, for helping us get back on track when we wondered what we were doing; Mr. Hillinck, for allowing us to monopolize his voice mail for most of the year, and for throwing fundraisers our way; Corey, our company representative, for showing us how to make the most out of our ideas, and of course, for the cookies; Mr. Barry, for giving us the freedom that we needed; Mr. and Mrs.Toh, for generously allowing us to use their home for our Holiday Formal; Mr. and Mrs. Capalbo for all the help they gave us in a variety of ways, but especially for the help they gave us in finding new ways to fund this book; Mr. Caragher, for opening the Publications Room every Thursday morning so we could have our weekly 7am meetings; Dr. Kanegae, for giving us sports pictures and film when we needed them; Marvin Carlson and Jan, for the help they gave in getting the senior pages in on time; Dave, of security, for protecting us; and everyone else who supported us throughout the year.
