The cover of our annual is a photograph of Raphael ' s fresco " The School of Athens ." It was painted 1n 1509-1511 , during the Italian Renaissance , m the Stanza della Segnatura , Vatican , Rome Great schola s from classical Greece and the Renaissance are depicted in the same scene of the great school At the left , Plato , bearing the white - bearded features of Leona r do do Vinci , debates with Aristotle Ar ound them, other noted scholars from both ages seek knowledge in informal discussion. They knew that education cannot be forced Each individual must educate himself The informality at Poly , like that at Athens , lends itself to personal education A close rapport between faculty and students is the result of small classes , personal conferences , and casual class discussions A large library with unlimited borrowing , frequent bull sessions , and v is its from distinguished outside scholars help the students to educate themselves in the tradition of ancient Athens

BUT MOSTLY THE PEOPLE

ALEXANDER B. BABCOCK

ASSISTANT HEADMASTER

DIRECTOR OF THE UPPER SCHOOL

Two years ago Mr. Babcock came to Poly and since then has won the respect and f r iendship of everyone here . To say he has accom pi ished a great deal in a short time is an understatement. The students feel he is on their side, and that is perhaps the greatest compliment a school administrator can receive

Mr Babcock has as much school spirit as any student and enthusiastically attends all games and school functions. We feel he is one of us , a pal , a good guy , and hope the old brown bicycle will be parked at the racks for many years.

WILLIS STORK HEADMASTER

Mr. Stork has been the headmaster at Poly for twelve years, twelve years of work to raise Poly from a I ittle Pasadena grade school to a nationally respected college preparatory school. Each year the school changes and grows and so does the responsibility, but the man meets the challenge.

Sometimes it seems as though the work on weekends and during summers is not appreciated, but talk to an · alumnus, a person who fully understands what Mr. Stork has done for him. Later you too will realize how much you owe the man in seersucker jackets and bow ties.

ORGANIZATIONS

VARSITY CLUB

The Varsity Club is an honorary club for those athletes who have lettered in varsity sports. Again this year it has sold popcorn at sports functions It also helped sponsor our successful Homecoming Dance and an assembly. For its members , perhaps its most important function is the awarding of a trophy at the end of the year to the school ' s Best All Around Athlete

GIRLS' SERVICE LEAGUE

GSL is open to all girls in the Upper School. It performs services around school , in the community, and even abroad Each spring GSL puts on a fashion show in cooperation with the American Field Service to raise funds to bring a foreign student to study at Poly. Through the YWCA it helps support a girl in India, and this year the girls made tray favors for children who had to spend their holidays in the hospital Membership in GSL is a memorable and rewarding experience for girls at Poly

A.F.S.

I left Viet Nom believing I was going to spend my AFS year in a city near Birmingham and to attend a big public school there Arriving in San Francisco , I was informed I was to be moved to Southern California . I was crying hard at that time because I felt already part of the family who wrote to me from Alabama. But I soon forgot everything. On my bus trip from San Francisco to Los Ange l es I learned what a beautiful state California is , then the fun of being a new sister , a new daughter , of having a new family. And September came along with another meaningful experience , Poly. I am learning many new things from the classrooms and from friends I have met. But there is still another personal thought that makes me l ike Poly The separate small buildings , small classrooms , the oak trees , the bushes , the grass remind me of something I haven "t fe lt , I haven ·t known for a very long time, Peace.

NONESUCH

This year , Wendy Palmer , with her talented and capable staf( assembled an interesting and entertaining I itera ry magazine The students received more issues than they did in previous years and enjoyed each one immensely The contributors to Nonesuch experimented with a variety of literary styles and a wider use of humor The 1967 staff of Nonesuch is to be complimented for continuing the tradition of a fine Poly I iterary magazine

DOWNBEAT

The Downbeat, edited by Nathan Vail, again proved itself an informative and comprehensive newspaper while adding the new departments of music, done by the editor, and book review, by Sidney Sdldate. The sports department, under the direction of Chris Campbell , gave detailed accounts of the games for those who did not attend while conveying the spirit of those who did. The letters to the editor indicated that the Downbeat was again well received and immensely successful

The Oak Leaves staff would like to thank everyone who contributed to the production of our annual. We especially owe thanks to Mr Wilber Loe, of the American Yearbook Company, and too often to the Loe family, who helped us in Mr. Loe·s absence. Mr. Loe patiently listened to problems, answered countless questions, and gave valuable suggestions for which we are most grateful. We are also indebted to our faculty advisor, Mrs. Moses, who kept us going in the right direction.
