DEDICATION
Madame Renee Bel Geary came to Poly in 1955 from Maumee Valley School, where she had known and wo'rked with Mr Stork. She taught French in the M i ddle School for several years. When the High School first came into being, she worked hard along with Mr Stork to make it a reality. In the five years that Poly has had a high school, Madame Geary has been a valuable member of the faculty not only because of her assistance to the smooth runnning of the administration, but, and this is where we know her best, because of her contributions to the organization and efficiency of the French Department . Her intelligence and wit have made French classes fascinating as well as instructive.

Last year, Polytechnic ' s student government was changed for the sake of efficiency and effectiveness. It has been our job to establish a basis for this new organization and to supply the necessary leadership to insure its effectiveness
This has been the most trying year for the student government because any decisions that were made set precedents. Whether they were good or bad these precedents wi II have a lasting effect on the Upper School:
The tirne will come when this year will be looked back upon as is any other year, in the face of more important events For the administration of student affairs by students to have developed as much as it has, is a true accomplishment This has been a year of testing new institutions formed by students to govern themselves . This same testing will lead to more improvements in our student government.

STUDENT COURT
This year has been the second year that Poly has had a student court. Aided by valuable experience and precedent, the Court has established its identity as a separate body of the student government. It has continued to serve the Upper School by protecting and upholding the Honor System, dealing with student infractions, functioning as a Board of Review, and interpreting the A.S B. Constitution
During the il'litial months of the school year the Court was not very active, meeting only a few times to discuss policies and to deal with a student infraction. As the year progressed the Judiciary became more active and met quite often, discussing many important problems
As in the past, this year's Student Court proved itself capable of meeting the demands placed upon it and carried out its duties, effectively insuring its continued position in the administration of student government.

This year's Varsity Club has been an active and successful school organization. This club, with the helpful aid of the Girls' Service League, sponsored the Homecoming Dance. Popcorn and soft drinks were sold at all sports functions, and, at the end of the year, the club awarded a trophy to the Most All-Around Athlete.

SERVICE LEAGUE
The Girls' Service League is made up of all those gi'rls in the Upper School who want to be members. Its function is to perform small services around school such as supplying flowers, providing guides, and serving punch. In addition, the Girls' Service League puts on a fashion show every spring in cooperation with the American Field Service to help bring a foreign student to study at Poly. G.S.L. also has a Spring Dance and contributes to the school's three publications: Downbeat, Nonesuch, and the yearbook, Oakleaves.

I guess it was the wind that was playing with the clouds. Each one had a strange shape or a funny expression that captured our attention . The sun, still out of our sight, plunged its beams into the new day.
We looked down and we saw a big island I think it was Cuba. We couldn't see it very well because it was so far below.
From then on, we found many tiny islands surrounded by beaches with big palm trees. It certainly was one of the most beautiful views I had seen.
It was about six when they announced, "Fasten your seat belts and please do not smoke until we land at the Miami Airport." That was to produce a lot of excitement: those who were already homesick burst into tears; others started singing and yelling . . .
In the first two days we stayed in Miami, our great experience began. We were about two hundred A.F.S. students from all different countries seeing for the first time women and men wearing bermudas with tennis shoes and socks, bell bottom pants, etc .
lt was hard to get used to missing tea-time and in its place having an early dinner. It was also hard to get used to having a hamburger for lunch and NOTHING ELSE.
But this was just the beginning of the year. There were thousands of other things waiting for us to see and to learn.
A group of forty-five South Americans, we came by bus from Miami to California. On the trip we had to fa..:e a great problem : English. We stopped in Houston for a day, and we were all disappointed. Some of us had studied the language, and now we couldn't understand a word. Those Texans slurred all their words together! It was also hard for us to talk to them; they couldn't understand what we said
The first of September in the Los Angeles I Trailways station, the Rays gave me their welcome. This year is going so fast that I realize that very soon the day will come when I'll have to say good-bye again in the Continental Trailways station. I' ll have to say good-bye to my family, friends, and to all the wonderful people I have met here. It will not be a go)d - bye forever, for California has captured me and I don't think I can keep from coming back sometime .

DOWNBEAT
This year the Downbeat undertook a new policy in order to revitalize the newspaper. Instead of having only the regul ar newspaper, there were two additional publications, Imagery and Nonesuch. Imagery, with Mike Brody as editor, was primarily a political and opinion paper, in which students could air their thoughts concerning world aff a irs and other controversia I matters. Nonesuch, under the direction of Lau r ie Bratenahl, published the best works of Poly's large crop of creative wr i ters
The Downbeat still published mainly school-related news, but there was a greate r emphasis upon editorials and student opin i on articles than in former years. Every effort was made to stay away from the desiccated and out-dated news articles which unfortunately have dominated the newspaper in the past few years
Thus through the periodical publication of the Downbeat, Nonesuch, and Imagery, a greater cross-section of student opinion and talent was presented than ever before.

After two di sappointing seasons the Panthers faced their first game with a mere nine players and much gloom. However, the team functioned as a unit and handily defeated five of the six teams they faced. The season ' s only loss came at the hands of an excellent Flintridge team in a game which saw the lead switch h a nds many t i mes The team ' s success can be attributed to several factors : a very stingy defense (with the exception of the Flintridge game); a balanced and potent offense; and great coaching This year ' s team established Po l y as a league powerhouse and proved that the Panthers were no push-overs With three all league players returning and several strong " B " players moving up next year's squad should be very strong as well

Eddie Barnes churns out a big gain
It is surely a time for soccer to become as popular in the United States as it has throughout the rest of the world. The American public is now becoming more aware of the character and excitement of the game the soccer teams at Poly have helped precipitate such an interest.
The 1965 Varsity season saw a few heartbre ak s and twice as many injuries, yet the spirit of each individual held the team together The team had great potential, and, adding the experience of each game, highlighted the year w ith a l -0 victory over Webb and a second consecutive Independent League championship. These impressive achievements have aga in endorsed Mr. Lavagnino ' s fine capabilities as a coach , and with the return of six lettermen there is great promise of another successful team in 1966.

This year ' s varsity compiled a 13 -6 season record. The team did not always play up to its capabilities, and this resulted in three one-point losses to teams who were obviously not in the Panther's class. Despite these letdowns, the team soundly defeated arch rival Flintridge twice, the second time to cinch a tie for first place. The scores of these games (7 6-56, 60-51) clearly indicate which team was best If the Panthers had not given away two games, they would easily have taken undisputed possession of first place.
The team was the most balanced in the school's history, with four starters scoring in double figures and a very strong bench Derek Shannon and Jeff Hahn were named to the AllLeague team, and Hahn was unanimously selected as the League ' s most valuable player.

As the C.I.F. pl"ayoffs started, the varsity traveled to Bishop, a school with an enrollment of nearly seven hundred students. Playing before a hostile crowd of fifteen hundred, and having the game broadcast on Bishop's radio station, the Panthers were blitzed by the Broncos in the first quarter. Although Poly was outscored by only four points in the rest of the game, they were never able to make up the original deficit. Bishop, after winning this feature Single A division game, went on to the semi-finals before losing. Highlighting Poly's second playoff match in two years were Jett Hahn's brilliant shooting and game scoring honors with twenty-one points Stan Woodward took second honors on the Panthers.

This season there has been a revival of baseball at Poly with seventeen boys out for the team. Although the results of the first games of the season have been disappointing, the new coach, Mr. Owens, as well as the team members, expects a good league record. With many seniors on the team supported by returning lettermen from the lower classes, the prospects for a good season look hopeful.

This year's track team is the most promising in many years The team has both depth and talent . With league champions in the 220, 880, high jump, 880 relay and strong contenders in the 100 and 180 low hurdles, the team's chance to capture the league championship, which has eluded them for the past two years, looks better than ever.
