The little prince crossed the desert and met with only one flower. It was a flower with three petals, a flower of no account at all.

"Good morning, " said the little prince.

"Good morning," said the flower.

"Where are the men?" the little prince asked, politely.

The flower had once seen a caravan passing.

"Men?" she echoed. "I think there are six or seven of them in existence. I saw them, several years ago. But one never knows where to find them. The wind blows them away. They have no roots, and that makes their life very difficult."

"Goodbye, " said the little prince.

"Goodbye, " said the flower.

A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning

To the Poly Students:

For me, it has been a pleasure and privilege to join you on the south campus this year.

You are a wonderful group of young people, and it is my sincere wish that the experiences and memories of this year will be rich and pleasant for many years to follow.

" Mete and dole unequal laws unto a savage race."

1964 has been a year of growth for Poly. The Upper School student body reached an all-time high for one hundred -eighty, the new Me Williams building added five classrooms, four faculty offices, and two utility rooms, and Poly athletic teams entered competition for the first year in a new league. The Student Council this year has been concerned with stabilizing and maintaining student government and the newly established Honor System during this period of change.

The. active participation of students, both individually and in groups, has been encouraging. Dances and other school-sponsored activities have had record attendances, and Poly has been well represented at the area Youth Council and various student conferences. Many new clubs have been established on campus, and students have freely argued controversial issues, both in the Downbeat and among themselves.

The routine activities of government have been efficiently handled by the students, and interest and enthusiasm have grown along with the school. This is the foremost objective of student government.

SEASON RECORD

Trou .bles--?

The team's record may not be an impressive one, but it is not at all shameful. This is only Poly's third year of soccer and many of the teams we played have had teams for years. It must also be remembered that Poly fields a football team along with soccer and most of Poly's opponents cannot boast this honor. Losing only five seniors and with capable second team members, the soccer team looks forward to a winning season next year.

Dave Brown anticipates the direction of Don Smiley's head shot.
Mike Jencks, next year's team captain, Coach Reeves, and Mike Houghton, this year's captain and most valuable player.
Mark Pringle strains to take advantage of this loose ball.

Geoff Mirman doesn't seem to be having much luck in trying to block this shot.

POLY HAS WINNING SEASON IN FIRST YEAR IN

PREP LEAGUE

Won 12 Lost 7

After a disasterous football season, Poly made a good showing in Prep League Basketball by winning six and losing four. The four losses were two to both Flintridge Prep and Chadwick who ranked seventh and second respectively in the C .I. F. Single A standings.

Led by senior Mike Griffith the Varsity team started the season with an impressive win over Ambassador. They did not fare so well in the Avalon Tournament where they lost to both Avalon and Culter a team the Panthers were later to beat in league play.

Probably the most exciting game of the season was the first Flintridge game in which the Panthers held an early six point lead over rival Prep only to fall short 49-60. With such a good showing this year, the prospects for next year are very good. The team will be hampered by the loss of All-Leaguer Mike Griffith. It is hoped that Jeff Hahn and Rich Kennedy will be able to fill his spot.

How could Jeff Hahn possibly miss with that expression?

Rich Kennedy lays one up for two point as Jeff Hahn follows for possible rebound.

UB" TEAM

John Esbenshade may look odd, but he scored on this play.

FRONT ROW: Pettit, Allen, Robinson, McCaslin, Skowrup, Hamlin & Coach Lichty. BACK ROW: Layman, Elliot, Wheat, Graham, Esbenshade, Smith.
Little Rick Pettit, the "B" Team's spark plug, shoots over a defender for two.

BASEBALL

At the time of this printing, the baseball team has yet to play a game, However, the prospects of a winning season are bright. Losing six of last year's senior starters has not discouraged coach Yezerski' s hopes. With returning lettermen: Mike Griffith, Geoff Mirman, Derek Shannon, Robbie Robinson, and Ken Dalzell we should have a good nucleus to build upon.

HOW'S THE WATER IN YOUR HOUSE?

Arlstocratwat.rMater Take a bath in broad daylight and have a good look at the water you live with. u the first burst of water is rusty let it run off. Now draw a full tub. Does the water still have a honey-oolored tinge? Well, maybe that's why rust spots show up on your linens. You need a Permaglas Water Heater badly. It's glass-lined. You get clean, clear water without a trace of rust. The Permaglas Gas Water Heater, with new Resuve Power Control changee heating speeds to meet your demand, and provides twice as much hot water as the average heater now in use. What's more, it's guaranteed for 10 full years• by A. 0. Smith Consumer Products, Kankakee, Illinois.
