DEDICATION

To Mr. Schuyler, our friend and adviser

WILLIS STORK, HEADMASTER

To the students of the Upper School:

In many ways this has been a year of fulfillm ent for Poly. We are now firmly established as a complete school from prekindergarten thro ugh the twelfth grade. The members of our first graduating class, according to all reports, are happy and successful in college.

Much of this accomplishment is due to you. You have been both _ratient and helpful in the transition period. With leadership and guidance from Mr. Schyler and his excellent corps of teachers, you have set standards that should be an inspiration to all succeeding classes. I am referring not only to your outstanding academic achievement and your excellence in music, dramatics, journalism, and sports, but also to your wholesomeness, your friendliness, and your loyalty. All these, along with your skits, dances, have helped to make this the finest school I have known.

To you who are leaving Poly goes our affectionate farewell; to you who will be welcomed back, a challenge to carry on the traditons so well begun in the past few years.

ARENT H. SCHUYLER, SR.

DIRECTOR OF THE UPPER SCHOOL

I know that I speak for the entire faculty when I congratulate the Class of 1963 on completion of their senior year and thank them for their excellent job of leading the school through its first year as a full sized high school.

We hope that you will always keep in touch with Poly and that the training, triumphs, and trials that you experienced here serve you well in the years ahead.

CUYAMA

The Cuyama game meant more to the Panthers than any other on their schedule. In their last meeting, Cuyama squeaked out a one -touchdown decision in a hard-fought, high -scoring game, and this year the Panthers were out to avenge that loss. On the first play from scrimmage, Mike Smith ran twenty yards for a touchdown, and taking advantage of this quick start, Poly never lost the lead. Mike 9cored : two more, Rich Keatinge added another, and the score stood 26-7 at the quarter. Cuyama soon picked up the pace, however, and by the end of the half, the margin had narrowed to 33-20.

This was as close as Cuyama was able to get, for Smith added four more touchdowns in the second half, and this, combined with Keatinge' s two, put Poly way out in front.

This was indeed a satisfying game, and not only because of the victory. The offensive plays ran smoothly and the defense was nearly impenetrable in the second half. All in all, this victory foretold a great season for the Panther Varsity.

Tom Fergoda runs down the sideline for a Poly touchdown.
Carl Boll e r (28) sw ee p s left e nd as T e rry Da vidson (25) blocks

The fine season predicted by early games did indeed materialize. Poly went undefeated in eight games, and no opponent was able to come within one and one-half touchdowns of out -scoring the Panthers. The final three games, however, were played without Jeff Palmer and Carl Boller. Jeff, an outstanding lineman, and Carl, the starting wingback, were both declared ineligible by the C. I. F. As a result, Poly had to forfeit its first five games, thereby losing the championship.

The Panthers were shaken by this series of events, but went on to win despite the handicap. Their final game, with Whittier Christian, displayed the power and speed that made the Panthers unbeatable. Out to finish the season as strongly as they had started it, and led by Mike Smith's flashy running, Poly smashed Whittier 60-14 in less than the regulation time.

This Varsity team of 1963 was a team to be proud of, and although only two lettermen, Mike Griffith and Rich Keatinge, are returning next year, they should form the nucleus of another strong team.

BASKETBALL

VARSITY TAKES CO-CHAMPIONSHIP WITH UPSET WIN OVER UPlAND

The Poly Varsity, with seven graduating seniors, closed the season in a blaze of glory, upsetting the Upland Lancers 78-54. It was Poly's best played game since the Upland meeting two years ago, when Tony Villecino sank two foul shots after the final whistle to beat Poly by one point. This year's game was a balanced effort by the Poly veterans, Mike Griffith leading the way with 22 points. While "Beau -Griff " broke up the defense with his amazing set shots, Terry Davidson gave his best performance as a Panther, combining the steal and the fastbreak to baffle the Upland defense., and scoring nineteen points. Tom Fergoda finally found the basket late in the game to score nine points in the third and fourth quarters. Dave Olson gave his usual stalwart performance in the backcourt, making several key steals during the game which aided the Panther victory.

Mike Smith turned in a good performance offensively with sixteen points, but more important, he managed to rattle the well- known "70- Point Man" , Tony Dean, keeping his game total down to nineteen points, while the Panthers swept on to victory. Terry, Tom, Dave, and Mike all graduate this spring. Their final performance demonstrates their ability as a great team. They will be sorely missed.

POLY GOES 2-FOR-3

IN AVALON TOURNEY

The Panthers started the season with an impressive game against Harvard Military Academy. Playing their first game of the year, they handled competition far out of the usual Academy League range. In fact, however, if it had not been for a slow start in the first quarter, they might have won that game, and gone on to win the championship. The next night was a different story, as Poly smashed Long Beach Brethren. Even though they were led by a "Wilt the Stilt" center, the steady rebounding by Smith, Fergada, and Barnum equalized the height difference, while Griffith, Olson, and Davidson ran Long Beach into the court.

In the third and final game of the tournament, against the Upland Lancers, Poly rolled to a fifteen point victory. Because of the Panthers' strong showing, two representatives from Poly were chosen on the alltournament team; Mike Smith and Mike Giffith. With only one loss in the tournament, Polytechnic won the championship in the consolation division.

B'S LOSE ONLY ONE, BUT BREAK TWO YEAR WIN STREAK

The Panther cubs had a strong team again this year, suffering their only defeat at the hands of Avalon over on the island (on the ILL-FATED week-end). In dropping an eight point lead and losing this tough one, they broke a two year winning streak. The one heavy loss the B's took was at the hands of the Muir B's. There is an abundance of talent among the young Panthers, enough for three strong teams. These boys will be the ones that will fill the ranks of the Varsity as it starts its first season in the Prep League next year. These new additions are sure to help give Poly a winning team next year in our new league.

Poly is not merely an old green house, a red brick patio, an asphalt basketball court. This is the shell for a school which comes alive with the motions and ideas of an active student body.

The Council's purpose this year has been to encourage an active and participating student body, not only through specific organizations, but also through the individual. Poly is a school built around the individual, and it is the individual who, in turn, contributes most to the school.

For this reason we have adopted an honor system which depends on the responsibility of each student. It is founded on the concept of personal honor, integrity, common sense, and mutual respect. We hope it will continue as a system which will grow into a traditional part of school life.

The students have given freely of their time in participation on work projects, social functions, and athletic events. Through such partie ipation, each student has had the opportunity to help develop I the high school. The thanks for the success of this year, therefore, goes to the students and to an understanding director and faculty.
