The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name 3 friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name 5 people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

"I think that if we are going to reform the world, and make it a better place to live in, the way to do it is not with talk about relationships of a politi cal nature, which are inevitably dualistic, full of subj ects an d objects and their relationship to one another; or with programs full of things for o th er people to do. I think that kind of approach starts it at the end and presumes the end is the beginning. Despite your OCD, you are so much fun and I am going to miss you and your Harry Potter obsession like crazy. Jessie: Umm so whatever happened to our band? Let's face it, we would have sucked You are so cool, JPez. You are going to be the first Cubo-Japanese person to ever invent a robotic version of Joe Jonas. I'll test out the prototype for you. You're so much fun and I'm going to miss ta lkin g to you about our crazy friends! Laura: You are so beautiful! Accept it! ! I hope you will go crazy in college and have enough fun to make up for all the years that you've spent working hard. I lov e you, stay in touch! Kelsey: I wish I was as beautiful as you are. Even though I don't understand the country music obsession, I'm going to try not to be judgmental. I'm going to miss you, Kels Kels!! Caitlin: We've shared a love of The Office/Jim Halpert ! wish I was Pam and of course No Doubt (remember those days?!). I'm going to miss your loud (offkey) singing on the senior patio. You build on fai lure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time , or any of your space. J Cash
There's some quality you get when you're not totally comfortable. When you're not doing what you're used to, you could completely fall on your face. You could completely blow it. Beck
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. When I taught you at eight to ride a bicycle, loping along beside you as you wobbled away on two round wheels, my own mouth rounding in surprise when you pulled ahead down the curved path of the park, I kept waiting for the thud of your crash as I sprinted to catch up, while you grew smaller, more breakable with distance, pumping, pumping for your life, screaming with laughter, the hair flapping behind you like a handkerchief waving goodbye.

" for one of the nicest things about mathematics, or anything else you might care to learn, is that many of the things which can never be, often are. You see it's very much like your trying to reach Infinity. You know that it's there, but you just don't know where - but just because you can never reach it doesn't mean that it's not worth looking for."
The Phantom Tollbooth SEE YOU SPACE COWBOY
Love always, Dad, Mum, and Charlotte
Sensitive, spirited, sunshine boy with golden curly mane Instead of roaring, your eyes silently spilled towers of tears with calm, unflappable tolerance.
Blonde baby. The more we tried to love you up, the more you pushed away. Spun around and chose a polar trajectory. Instead of hugs and kisses, you preferred to dig in the mud. Unlike saccharine flocks who danced the robot, you alone preferred the A-man shuffle. Said you were you, not who they claimed you were, or could be if you tap danced.
Politely waltzing back when some demanded more attention You came third, but won the silver loving cup for best in show. Blue eyed boo who blew glass and threw pots, Swallowing Spanish wall waves, Gliding down mountaintops, Diving, flying, soaring somewhere speculative Inventing your own version of the tango Claiming your own stake, breaking ground evolving energy, guzzling life.
It had to be your way. Attentive yet in silence, we let you be to find your unwavering soul serenely as we always knew you would.
We love you and are so proud of your accomplishments. Always be true to your passions.
Love,
Mom, Dad, Mimi, Mike and Phil

On the trip horne, students experienced an unexpected squall, causing the boat to take on water.
"Climbing down the granite slab was the most physically and mentally challenging thing I have ever accomplished , " recalled sophomore Molly Thornton. " It took so much heart for me to keep moving down the face of the rock, and, without the help of my group members, I don ' t think I would have been able to do it. " More than 35 freshmen embarked on a five-day journey to Catalina Island aboard the 130-foot, threemast " American Pride" to enhance their knowledge of geology, marine biology and environmental science.
In keeping with Poly tradition, the junior class divided into four student pods that canoed down the Colorado River for fi v e days. "We started at the Hoover Dam and ended at a take out point, " explained junior Jenny Lamb. " If there was anything I could change about the trip, it would be to canoe on a different part of the ri v er that had less wind. One day , all of the boats reached the shore e x cept three that were stranded in the middle of the river because the wind une x pectedly picked up. We worked together as a team and rescued our friends who couldn't get to shore. " As with all outdoor education trips, students participated in group See OUTDOOR ED, page 9

"I loved surfing all day and hanging out with my friends in the evenings. We would sit around the camp fire and tell stories about how gnarly the waves were."
"We tried to have interesting conversations with the kids in hopes of learning more about their culture, "

One of the more notable trips was the strenuous fast-packing trip in Yosemite National Park, which involved trail running with a daypack that just contained the bare necessities, like water and power bars. The first day, students hiked the 13-mHe valley loop trail, followed by a different hike in Upper Yosemite Falls on the second day. The trip ended with the 18-mile Half Dome trail that normally takes an average of twelve hours to hike.

Not only were freshmen also offered this trip, but its location was moved from Sedona, Arizona, to the Eastern Sierra mountains of Mammoth, California. According to sophomore Amy Robles , "The freshmen were really great to hang out with, but I think next year they should separate the freshmen and sophomores for some rides so that each student can get to know [his or her] own classmates."

A yearbook is more than just a collection of pictures and memories-it is a document that leaves a legacy on a year of our lives. Creating that document, Oak/eaves 2008, was only possible through the extensive contributions of many, many people-thank you to everybody who played a part in the production of this book. To our wonderful staff, it never ceased to amaze us how dedicated you all were.
Toiling away in the Mac Lab, going hungry in the Pub-you guys sacrificed a lot of time and effort to make this year's book successful. To Nitin, thank you for being like a third editor-in - chief to us. Jennifer, thank you so much for your constant support and guidance. Your organization and dedication to the yearbook really mean a lot, and we couldn't have done it without you. Corey Mundwiler, thank you for working closely with us and being understanding and helpful through all of our problems. To Mr. Barry and the Tech Crew, thanks for making sure that all our computers were running smoothly. Lastly, we would like to thank you. It is for you, for the Poly community that we love so much, that we make this yearbook--ENJOY!
