Mrs. Hamilton she colors our days

We hereby dedicate this coloring book to Mrs. Hamilton, who, in her post as our fearless and dynamic head of Upper School, has created a community in which everyone feels free to create and go wild (for the most part, anyway). The rest of the time she guides us through "growing up," and shows us how to be honest and tolerant people in this wacky world.

She's also an engaging English teacher, with a passion for both prose and poetry. (Did you know? Mrs. Hamilton's ultimate [non-sexual] fantasy is to publish a Pulitzer prize-winning novel or volume of poetry).

And Hammy laughs and labors along side us every day. She seems to know every single person's name ... as well as our hobbies, worries, and especially our successes. Her friendly face is often seen at sporting events, theatre productions, and even at the occasional club meeting or two. She does her own creating, and she passionately encourages ours.

Leni- What other 14 year old can keep up with 18 year olds? Don't ever mistake that for anything less than a sign of great intelligence. I love you. A GUIDE TO GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school.

These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Danny- My co-discoverer of Entourage. I enjoyed all of our good times hanging out and your keeping things lighthearted.

Kate-The m e mories are endless. Math with Mr. Sisley, "Guys, would you please move ," a veces=tal vez, the points system, morning meetings sophomore ye ar, and all those great car rides during which we discussed pretty much everything. Thanks for always being willing to have a good conversation.

Allie-My partner in the Spanish class firm and "clique" cohott. The night with the six dinners , all those islands/movie combos, and many others were truly some of the most fun times of my life. Also, if you need someone to park your car, I'm there.

Christine- So many great moments at Paseo , the football games, and the Bristol farms parking lot. Who could forget our attempts to avoid the "subtabular?" Thanks for being a constant friend.

Nora and Julia- All the time s you guys came over randomly made dreary days enjoyable. The time yo u kidnapped and interrogated me stands out as particularly noteworthy , as does the night when Julia and I could not stop laughing for no reason I always think of our great adventure when I'm passing Arden on the way to school. You guys made everything more fun.

Eliza- Physics review sessions were endlessly entertaining thanks to CPK and your seemingly never-ending supply of Cokes. Good luck in college soccer and in life. Lindsey- Lin-dog, the laughter never seems to cease with you around. You are a constant positive and entertaining presence.

Jeni- You truly have an uncanny skill for calling m e with homework questions in the middle of dinner. Regardless , I am grateful for all the times yo u shared yo ur insights (and Cokes) with me.

New Upper School Director Selected

After months of interviews, long plane flights and round-table discussions, Jamie Neilson was selected as Polytechnic School's seventh Upper School Director. Neilson, scheduled to begin work this summer, will replace Grace Hamilton, who will continue to teach and work with students next year.

A search committee headed by longtime faculty members Roger Ipswitch and Kate Schmitt invited five top nominees, hailing from California, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Boston, to the Poly campus. "We were looking for somebody with people skills, the ability to work with students, faculty, and parents," Ipswitch noted. Other important considerations were relevant experiences in teaching and administrative work and the ability to adapt to living in California, a state that Ipswitch characterized as "casual but no less intense in academics."

Emerging from this process was Neilson, the Assistant Head of School at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Faculty and students alike were impressed with Neilson in their meetings with him. Former Upper School Director Greg Feldmeth observed Neilson's "unaffected style" and

good sense of humor. History teacher and tenth-grade dean Garine Zetlian emphasized Neilson's analytical skills. And senior Rebecca Wear, co-president of the Girls' Service League, noticed the candidate ' s enthusiasm and ability to connect with other students.

Head of School Deborah Reed, who made the final decision after receiving recommendations from the search committee, was swayed by Neilson 's teaching skills and his doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, where he focused on gender studies and whether it was possible to "cross-pollinate" student experiences so as to create a level playing field between the sexes in the classroom. But Reed was most convinced by his 18-year commitment to Shipley School, which spoke to his dedication and willingness to "learn to live with the decisions that he makes."

Put together, Neilson's wide range of talent, experience and personal qualities allowed him to claim the job of Upper School Director. Next year he will be faced with many important tasks, including implementing the Master Plan , blending the younger and more experienced members of the faculty, integrating more advanced technology, balancing student life and academics, and invigorating the curriculum to better meet the needs of students.

Neilson has a wife, Stephanie, and two children, Reath and Clara, aged nine and twelve,

respectively. His family, he admits, consists of "easterners born and bred" who will have to demonstrate long-distance support for their beloved Philadelphia Eagles. In his free-time, Neilson enjoys mountain biking, reading fiction, listening to music, watching plays, and going to school games and performances. "One of the exciting things about striking out in a new direction is that you know you will be changed by it," Neilson said. "I'm not sure I know what specific things about me will be altered, and that's part of the fun of it."

Editorial: For Poly's Future, Mandarin is a Must

A topic that has come up time and time again (including in this newspaper) when discussing changes that need to be made at Poly is the incompleteness of our language program. More specifically, we lack a Chinese option. Those students who are interested in taking up the language are forced to seek outside options at nearby PCC or Caltech, in classes which often conflict with their daily school schedules and extracurricular activities. This failure to accommodate a clear student need must come to an end.

The primary reasons to incorporate Chinese into the syllabus relate to the country itself. According to the noted economist Jim Rogers, "the 21st century will belong to China." Rogers, who traveled the country extensively in order to come to meaningful conclusions regarding its economic health, noted the pervasive entrepreneurship, modernization, and (for lack of a better word) capitalism develop-

ing in China during his time there. Several other economists have backed up this conclusion, and computer companies like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo! have made recent inroads into the nation and will continue to open up the country ' s population to the ideas of free market capitalism and democracy. Now, the average Chinese person has access-although limited and censored-to the internet and thus is exposed frequently to the ideals of the western world. Essentially, China is an economically gigantic nation with a huge workforce and a focus on policies that will only make it more capitalistic and more successful. For example, because of the organization of taxes in China, its citizens save and invest roughly 30 % of their income (compared to a paltry 1% in the US), which is a good sign of future growth. Poly students need to have the opportunity to learn to speak the language of the country that will likely be the most powerful economic (and eventually political) factor of our lifetimes. Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over a billion people, from the corporate lead-

ers who will help pioneer the Chinese business landscape to the workers who will be crucial to the future of the global economy. We, as Poly students, will need to be able to communicate effectively in Chinese in order to succeed in the international business and politics of the future.

A secondary reason to support the creation of a Chinese program at Poly is the precedent set by other, similar institutions. Schools comparable to Poly, such as Harvard-Westlake , Andover, and Exeter already have booming Chinese programs as a part of their curricula. We need to follow up on the model established by these institutions and delay no longer.

If Poly wants its students to truly succeed in the future, creating a Chinese option is an absolute must. Although I greatly enjoyed the language experiences I have had pursuing French and Spanish, I still wish I had been given the opportunity to study Chinese. Hopefully Poly will no longer deprive students of the option my fellow classmates and I never got.

Buzzer Beater Propels Poly Past Prep

A successful regular season came to an end last week for the Poly men's water polo team. Poly entered their regular season finale with a lot on the line, considering it was an opportunity for them to ensure a second place finish in the Prep League standings, as well a chance to as beat hated rival Flintridge Prep. Aside from the rivalry, the Rebels also had some added incentive for playing the Panthers tough. Flintridge was in need of a win in order to even have a chance to make the CIF Division VI playoffs. Prep effectively employed a drop defense to start the game in an attempt to counteract Poly's potent offensive attack. Said Panther Head Coach Ryan Katsuyama, "[The drop defense] was a very good defensive strategy for the Rebels. It forced our perimeter players to handle the ball and/or drive through to clear out the defenders, taking up valuable time and keeping the ball away from our top offensive weapons."

Despite the tough defense, Poly found a way to hold a 4-3 lead after the first quarter behind two goals by senior Filip Svitek and one by freshman Justin Liu. But Flintridge answered back in the second quarter with four goals of their own en route to a 7-6 halftime lead. Although Poly was down by one head-

ing into the third quarter, the Panthers came back with some offensive firepower. The Panthers scored with a plethora of ballhandlers including junior Rusty Morris, sophomore Peter Bohlen and freshman Tommy Gilfillan. The Panthers also were solid on defense with senior goalie Brandon Rho contributing seven saves in three quarters and sophomore Will Calrson adding one save in the third quarter. Svitek led the team in goals with seven, and moved irito fourth place on the Poly career goal-scoring list. In the previous game against Alhambra, Svitek set the record for most goals in a season, as well as becoming the first player in program history to score over 100 goals in a single season.

Despite Svitek's dominance, Poly found themselves down going into the final two min-

utes of play. However, Bohlen scored to even the score at 12-12, and Gilfillan received a pass off of a steal, controlled the ball, and then shot and scored as the horn sounded. Poly celebrated at the middle of the pool as Prep fans held their heads in disbelief.

The team improved their record to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the Prep League. Poly lost, but they know that they have experience playing against other top-caliber teams that will be participating in the playoffs. The team knows that they have the talent to stick with the other heavyweights of their division, and this should be an invaluable asset as the team prepares for postseason play. The tenth-ranked Panthers now turn their attention to the CIF Division VI playoffs which start Tuesday Novemeber 8th at PCC, and hope to continue their success.

As such, one would think that this stressful time of year (application time) would only be worse for the seniors due to a lack of support from classmates. However, many seniors disagree with this stereotypical view of the class. Senior Courtney Bell stated, "Our class is 'down to earth,' because, at the end of the day, we care more about friends than grades." Some seniors feel that the whole college process has actually united the class, instead of dividing it. "We are academically oriented," said Christine Turner, "but we're not out to get each other. The college process has actually made our class come , together even more because we have something in common." While there are of course different groups of friends within the class ,
