Mr. lpswitch,

Since joining the faculty in 1969, you have been an integral part of so many aspects of the Poly community. From teaching your always popular history electives, to coordinating audiovisual equipment all over our campus, and, of course, announcing endless home Panther games, we appreciate all that you do! Freshmen taking your Pacific Rim class get an early chance to truly realize the joy of having a great class, while simultaneously learning about world cultures and the benefits of pass/ fail quizzes. By senior year, students rush to take your electives. In Mass Communications and World Religions you impart a great deal of knowledge while maintaining a fun class during an unusually hectic year. Plus you have a better knowledge of sports than anyone on campus!

We see your obvious love of sports throughout the year with your timeless support of our Panther athletic teams. Our Babcock Field and Gamble Gym simply would not be the same without the sound of your voice announcing the football, baseball, and basketball games. This year the GSL decided to support a charity called the Desi Geestman Foundation. Their mission is to to assist pediatric cancer patients and the families of patients while they are pursuing treatment at City of Hope. This year the GSL hosted the third annual talent show and, for the first time, combined this with a silent auction. At this event alone, the GSL raised over $2,500 for the Desi Geestman Foundation.

think it is something we all need in our lives Ellen DeGeneres says in one of her brilliant stand-up routines, "Procrastination is not the problem, it is the solution. It is the universe's way of saying, 'Stop. Slow down. You move too fast."' I couldn't agree more.

We are all so consumed with the go-go-go

lifestyle. While people all around the world are being victimized by forces they cannot control, why do we continue to victimize ourselves? Waters rise in Asia and hillsides dissolve in California , yet we still chug our Diet Cokes so we can get to our physics classes on time. 2005 will bring many more unpredictable and terrible things that are out of our hands Our concept of our own reality is severely skewed. So calm down. We micromanage our lives :!nough as it is. Take a break and enjoy you can. Turn in the paper late. Do somEthing that matters to you.

I don't think this attituie is irresponsible; I think it is more resp)nsible. I'm not promoting that we disregad our work obligations. We instead shoult find a way to balance the mundane with the significant. We all need to make a conmitment to our mental health, and we neel to keep it.

Black and White: Dealing with Affirmative Action

The opinion adopted by most of the liberals here at Poly is that affirmative action is a good thing. Most of us come to this conclusion thus: "I am a liberal. My party is a proponent of affirmative action. Affirmative action was designed to help African Americans. I'm no racist (self-administered pat on the back), so I am for affirmative action!" Sound reasoning, to be sure. Yet a unique feature of affirmative action is that it actually is against the self-interest of some of Poly's own students: the ones who don't get it. That's right, to be a proponent of affirmative action while being a white student at Poly is to favor a system designed against you. And in a way Poly's white students will feel its negative effects the most.

But is there an alternative? Few would seek the absolute destruction of affirmative action even at their most vindictive. We are, for the most part, Democrats (another selfadministered-back-pat opportunity). But where is the alternative? Look no further than our elusive Republican schoolmates: they have a ready solution. The answer,

adopted by a good number of those unmentionable curs (we know who you are) is a socio-economic admission criterion. It is a similar system to affirmative action except it favors poor students over black ones.

As the alternative policy advocates hypothesize, most of America's blacks are poor. So this alternative is not aiding in the education of blacks any more than its counterpart, as affirmative action helps all blacks rich and poor. What it is doing is denying that advantage to middle and upper class blacks, like most of those who attend schools like Poly. So the heart of the question is reached: do our black students deserve affirmative action? Opponents of the system say no, believing that one is rich first, black second as far as college admittance should be concerned. The other side cites two hundred years of forced servitude and the continuing scourge of racism in America as more than enough justification for the blacks' exploitation of this affirmative action loophole, equality be damned. With either, someone walks away unhappy. So I propose a new plan: I say we whities get a stiff upper lip.

As many of the elderly we refuse to listen

to keep telling us, there is a world outside of colleges, which some even call the real world. And sadly, it will be a harsher world to our black friends than to us for a good while still. But even if you do foolishly count a good college as the mark of a successful person, you go to Poly. Chances are you're going some place at least semi-respectable like Brown or even (gasp!) Dartmouth! Think of your fellow Asian-American students, who are even more disenfranchised by college's attempts at diversity. Do you see them complaining? No, for the most part, you see them putting their heads down, gritting their teeth, and becoming fabulously wealthy neurosurgeons. Consider: you may well trust one of your vital organs to a person that you beat out for their first choice. Let's hope for your sake they don't hold it against you. So I exhort my noble gringo brethren to be the new stoics of our age. We could be the group that actually helps bridge the racial chasm that our parents and grand parents have only recently stopped digging. And of this new generation, those bright young kids at Poly should be some of the best equipped to stop moaning and just give it the old college try.

Mr. Robinson: Uniting Fashion, Chaos Theory

Mr. Robinson is a consummate writer, an avid baseball fan, a staple of Poly's Math department, and arguably one of the bestdressed men on campus. But it is neither through analysis of his penmanship, his baseball knowledge, nor his long history as a Math teacher that one may discover the profound mysteries of the man. It is through an analysis of his choice of attire. Beneath the crisp vanilla shirts, the pressed grey slacks, and the snappy navy blazers, there lies the answer to the riddle that is Steve Robinson. After months of observation I can boldly say: Mr. Robinson is the human embodiment of the very science he teaches: chaos theory. I first came upon my conclusion regarding Robinson and chaos theory after spending a little time with my notes. Because of patterns I had noticed in his schedule of attire, I began chronicling his outfits in my math notebook.

After several weeks, a distinct pattern began to emerge. Glancing at my notes I could see that Robinson had correlated his outfit to the day of the week; Mondays were

tweed-jacket-dark-green-polo-and-brownslack days, with Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays arranged in similar fashion.

appeared as if Robinson's system of attire yielded a perfect periodic 5-cycle. Then, when all seemed so systematic and predictable, chaotic qualities began to emerge. (Please do not infer that the term "chaos" references any lack of fashion integrity on Robinson's part; I use it strictly as a mathematical term.)

Survey of Students' Views on Religion and Faith

On January 13th and 14th, eighty-two randomly selected students, about a fourth of each grade, were asked to take a religion survey that was used in Roger Ipswitch's World Religions course. While the survey demonstrates that Poly students have a wide variety of religious beliefs, compared to national averages Poly students are not very religious. Even though most students have some sort of religious background, over half of those polled considered religion "not very important" in their lives. Another striking result of the poll was that only about 60% of students believe in God or a supreme being, compared to 95% nationally. However, this does not mean students have turned their back on religion. Many students said they "did not know" whether God or a supreme being existed. In all, only 11% of students said they were atheist.

Religious Denominations

Faculty response was just as mixed. About half of the faculty (25) returned surveys, given on the 13th. Of those, 30% indicated they go to church at least 2-3 times a month, and about 20% consider themselves atheist. An interesting discrepancy between students and faculty is that only 25.6% of students believe the influence of religion in America is increasing, compared to 70% of faculty members.

Overall, the students and faculty seem to be spiritual, but not necessarily religious. The "typical" respondent grew up with a particular religious denomination, but did not consider it very important, yet they did not want to count out the existence of a supreme being. Even those who did not find religion important in their lives still prayed. While not many believe that a supreme being exists and have no doubts, not many want to completely deny the existence of such a being either.

The Fight for Gay Marriage

It is perhaps fair to say that gay marriage has become the most divisive, most politicized issue to emerge in years. The ongoing debate has polarized much of the population, but in between the obvious extremes there exists a rather large and extremely relevant moderate faction. Members of this group propose that homosexuals be allowed to form civil unions, which would offer gay couples a status similar to that given to straight ones, without offering them marriage proper. While the material distinction between a civil union and a marriage would be minimal, there is a subtlety to this proposition that many fail to notice. The notion of such a dichotomy within the government's definition of marriage represents the reemergence of "separate but equal"- style thinking, and for this reason should be seen as not offering gay Americans "equal protection of the laws." To offer homosexuals the same status, but only through the recreation of a separate category, implies an inferiority of lifestyle; this "solution" to a divisive issue amounts to spitting in the face of the values which this country claims to represent. Furthermore, homosexuals make up a relatively sizeable and productive element of American society and so to further marginalize them would not only represent a grave injustice but also a practical miscalculation. Indeed, America owes much of its strength to the effective incorporation of minority elements into society, as they often prove to be among her most tireless workers and loyal citizens.
