In November of college counselor A.lice Cotti was working late in h.er office in th.e Big Yellow House wh.en h.er ph.one began to ring. Th.ough. sh.e tried to ignore it, th.e ring persisted until sh.e answered th.e ph.one. Upon lifting up th.e receiver, she h.eard a low rumbling sound. Confused and curious, sh.e traced th.e call, only to discover its origin was a nonexistent Poly extension number. Several times a day for over two weeks, h.er ph.one confined to ring from th.is extension. Although. th.e sounds th.at sh.e h.eard varied, no discernable voice could be identified. Eventually, sh.e asked 'Director of Security 'Dave Yamaoka to locate th.e unidentified extension, and in a matter of days h.e was able to track h.e calls to a circuit located in th.e closet of Magistra Wickh.em's office. Th.ere was no ph.one in th.is office; only an open circuit

I have two passions I enter into every day: art and feeling. Why would a person not want to live with and by the things that please? I am an artist. It is my job, if one can even call it that. A job, I think, should be something that is enjoyable to one, so enjoyable to the point of living and being that profession. A businessman seems to bring his knowledge of his profession into handlings of his everyday life. When someone handles everything in one way, then that person should be written as that. I am an artist, and so I choose to conduct my life in that way. Like everything; some art is bad and some is good. And so everything I do reflects my job, my passion, it is me. Every place I walk, everytime I write; every second I choose to breathe becomes a place, medium, and chance to work in my craft. My second passion is more acute. It is my privacy. It is pure emotion, which controls me. Love is the only emotion that is impossible for a person to pull up from inside. A person can make himself or herself happy by just merely wanting to, but love chooses when to make itself present. That is why we like to have it and that is why it seems so powerful to us. I am mystified again and again by the intesity of my feelings. They guide me. They are what I believe, more so than logic.
I have been doing some thinking recently and realized how much I am going to miss Poly. I have grown up here. At any time I can find anyone of my family members here. I have been walking down the same halls my whole life, and I like that. There is stability in places of comfortability. My life up to this point has been based at this school and I am going to miss it. All the teachers have known my name before I have even met them. I must thank all the teachers that have helped me, and an even bigger thank you to those who didn't because you forced me to grow for myself. For those of you who don't know me yet I have spent the last four years in the art studio. I have stayed quiet in the public eye of Poly during my high school years and it has only given me more time to be with myself. For all still here: don't forget to enjoy it.

iller's "The Crucible" in Garland

Arthur Miller's play "The Crucib l e,'' a dark drama centered around the Salem Witch Trials, will soon take over the Garland stage.
Although the play is set in Puritan New England, the situation is wide ly regarded to be analogous to McCarthyism When rumors of witchcraft throw the town into an uproar, characters such as John Proctor, played by senior David Gross, must decide whether to falsely confess to being a witch or to tell the truth and die , a choice that those accused of Communism in the 1950's a l so faced. Miller himself was actually found guilty of harboring Communist ideas by the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1956.
Directors Tina Cocumelli and Cynthia Crass of the Arts Department were not fazed by the idea of producing a play about "the ugliness of the human spirit [and] what fear and hysteria evoke," says Cocumelli, who also notes that the students are character actors whose div ersi ty demands a play with a wide range of characters.
Moreover, this year's senior class is the first to have gone through the full-year history of arts classes required of freshmen. The students' familiarity with theater history was further augmented by two weeks of
research work and consultations with U.S. History teachers Greg Feldmeth and Garine Zetlian. Senior Dash Anderson stresses the importance of this background work, saying that "The dialect and the physicality of the play have to be consistent to create this period."
Another unusual aspect of this production is the mural painted on the floor of the stage. As part of an independent study on Spanish and Mexican muralists, senior Adam Feldmeth painted images in bold colors, in direct contrast with the spartan dress of the actors. According to Feldmeth, by portraying a gigantic person crying, a Gothic cathedral and liberal interpretations of acts of genocide, the mural shows "how people can wrongly judge others in times of social pressure."
Almost all the actors are drawn from the Advanced Acting andActing Ensemble classes, the two upper levels of the acting program. There was no formal audition process , but after improvisations and readings Cocumelli and Crass balanced the preferences of the actors themselves with their own directors' opinion of how the actors should be cast. Cocumelli explained, "We'll put [the actors] in the part that makes [them] do exactly the hardest thing not what [they ' re] good at. This is where educational theater is different. We want [them] to be challenged." One great challenge the actors faced was the fact that the material was often "beyond the scope of [their] experience, partially because of [their]
age and partially because most [people] are unaccustomed to such life and death dilemmas,'' according to Crass. For instance , although senior Catherine Karayan has not lost seven children, she plays Ann Putnam, a woman who has experienced those losses and blames them on witchcraft. To help the actors empathize with their characters, the directors encouraged them to use substitution, in which the they "try to think of a personal situation that made [them] feel similar emotions, and then magnify those emotions,'' explained senior Minha Popalzai. Although the directors say that the actors had no problem understanding the literature , nevertheless the play is "so deeply layered that trying to find a way to express all the layers [is difficult] ," comments Crass. "We're now getting to the point where we have to stop trying to express all those layers because there's too much happening."
Cocumelli agrees, saying, "When you actually get to the time of performance , you just have to trust that it's all in you and that it will come out in subtle ways that an audience will get." Meanwhile, rehearsals are so intense that the actors, according to senior Ann Gordon, sometimes find it difficult to transition between rehearsals and their school and personal lives
The directors are not worried about the audience's reaction to the play. Crass believes that it is "so heartfelt" that the messages will be successfully conveyed " to the extent that any audience member is open to that kind of self-examination." Although Cocumelli stresses that the actors perform more for themselves than for the audience, she believes that some parents or teachers may be disturbed by seeing the students tackle such mature issues. Moreover, the relevance of the idea of witch-hunting to today's post-9/11 world may offend some. Indeed , a flyer for the play carries the warning "For mature audiences, only."

Students Chosen toAttend Diversity Conference
Senior Celestine Do, juniors Logan Tiari and Zeke Youngstrom and sophomore Tshema Nash will depart for Honolulu, Hawaii to attend the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Student Diversity Leadership Conference on December 3. The four-day conference will help raise issues of diversity that have become a central topic at high schools nationally.
Two years ago, current senior and junior Diversity Committee CoPresidents Minha Popalazi and Greg Luna became two of the first Poly students to attend the conference. Popalazi says of her experience, "It ., brings a lot of issues to light for students who attend, and it's such a great place to hear other people's ideas and to have your mind opened up It's indescribable."
The conference's popularity has grown from year to year; more students apply to go on the trip every year. In order to participate , students must fill out an application that includes a 1' teacher recommendation as well as two short essay questions.
After all the applications were turned in , senior members of the diversity group met with Upper School , Director Grace Hamilton and select four students to go to Hawaii. The number of spaces available is limited by the Diversity Committee's budget.

Tum the oven to 325 degrees in order to reheat pizza. Watch out for snails when you get the newspaper in the morning. Check the weather before you fly to the East Coast in winter. Wash white and colored clothes separately. Look out for bats, balls and other toys before you back out of the driveway. Always take an extra pencil with you to standardized tests. Check the expiration date on the milk carton before you pour yourself a glass of milk. If it's likely to rain, bring an extra pair of socks to your soccer game. Lock all the doors before you leave the house. If you want better advice, ask your mother.

It's weird thinking that you're leaving, especially since I still remember the days when you used to make me jump off the top of the slide while we were playing spies.
