Mrs. Grether, thanks for being our friend, teacher, and mentor. Through the years at Poly everyone hears about junior year AP Biology and what a wonderful teacher you are, and we can truly say that the legend lives on. Somehow you take the hardest, and at times, most confusing subject matter and make it interesting and logical, whether it be through jokes in your lectures, videos, or our personal favorite, laser discs. Through the most stressful year of a student's life, you are there to make it interesting. You have taken time out of your packed schedule to write thousands of glowing college recommendations, helped us announce our prom, and turned a blind eye to students coming on campus bearing food. It's always nice to see your smiling face as we rush down the hallway trying to make it to class on time. And of course how could anyone overlook that illicit affair with Mr. Fletcher, but we know you only use him for his hot car (Sorry Mr. Fletcher, the secret's out). Thanks for all the knowledge and laughter you imparted on us, you've made a mark on all of us, thanks for being an amazing teacher and person, we will miss you when we leave.

Senior year is a time to look forward to the road ahead and plan for the future. Also , it is a time to look back and reflect on the first eighteen years of one's life. The Oakleaves' staff has kindly provided each member of the Class of 2003 with a page in the yearbook. I consider this to be a good tradition because it can be used as a medium to express your appreciation (or lack thereof) for everything provided to you by Poly, your friends, and your family. However, for me I don't think I am able to say and show everything with one page worth of pictures and words. This is a problem that I think many other members have to deal with.

They each have their own way of coping with the situation. My way is as follows, I have chosen to multiply both sides of the probem by zero and get rid of it altogether. Now I understand that I will probably have to deal with accusations from people who think that what I am doing isn't right They will say that it is untraditional. My response is that I AM UNTRADITIONAL. I have also prepared a defense to counteract every other type of attack. Is Conflict with Iraq This Decade's Vietnam?

November 26, 2002-Are Poly students ready to serve their country in the event of war? What about the rest of Americado they support war with Iraq?

When Vietnam War veteran, Allan Schaefer spoke to Poly students on Veteran's Day about the imminent possibility of war with Iraq, he exhorted President Bush to exhaust every possibility before entangling the United States in war. Most Americans are wary of a possible war against Iraq, as the most recent Gallup poll concluded that only 3 7 % of Americans were in favor of sending troops to Iraq without United Nations approval. Poly students are likewise against sending troops to Iraq without United Nations approval. In a survey of 120 students a mere 27% support war with Iraq without U.N. approval. In contrast, as the U.S. entered the Vietnam War in 1965, 61 % of Americans approved of the war. Eight months later that approval had declined to 49%. Due to the protracted nature of the Vietnam War, the United States' government instituted a draft to meet the rising demand for troops in South East Asia. Of the 1, 728,344 men who were actually drafted into service during this period, an estimated In a survey of 120 students a mere 27% support war with Iraq without United Nations approval. 25% violated conscription laws. Reed was presented with a puzzle box and a magical wand to help her cope with her duties as head. She also gave a humorous yet emotional speech on her past experiences in schools, both as a student and as a teacher. December 17, 2002The Internet creates as many problems as it solves. In the last few years , college professors and high school teachers have grown increasingly concerned over the ease with which students can download research papers and submit them as their own work. But proving that students plagiarized has been a time-consuming and difficult task for teachers. Now the Internet is offering a possible solution to the problem. This year, in a pilot program, the Upper School is subscribing to an Internet service called Turnitin.com, a product of iParadigms, LLC. Since September, Poly students have had to "register" their research papers and essays with the online service. Once a paper has been uploaded, Tumitin.com searches more than 1 million sites, looking for instances of identical phrasing. If it finds one, Turnitin.com produces a report which directs the teacher to the original papers. According to Holmgren, Poly signed up for the program, which costs $500 a year, following a report on cheating by the Student Academic Integrity Advisory Committee (SAIAC). As options were being investigated last year , "a couple of incidents" in which students submitted their older siblings ' history papers arose. At the end of the year, the performance of Turnitin.com will be evaluated by teachers, students and members of SAIAC Commented Holmgren, "We haven't found any incidents of plagiarism at Poly with the program, which is a good thing." term "feeder" to define Poly: "We are first and foremost a school in ourselves. September 24, 2002-Poly was ranked 18th out of 100 high schools nationwide in a study released in the September 2002 issue of Worth magazine. "As I sit here all alone on a Sunday night in the Publications Room ... " is how I honestly thought I would be starting this letter. However, this would be a bad lie on many bases. First of all, here I am on a bright and early Saturday morning, in this cozy 'Pub' we've made into our lovely second home, happily counting down the hours until this yearbook is complete. More importantly, here I am, not only not working all alone, but rather blessed with all my editors, working computers, actual pictures from this year, and our friendly Starbucks. Life just doesn't get much better ...

All this bliss would not be happening right now if it weren't for certain incredible individuals on our Oakleaves 200 2-0 3 staff:

The Layout Goddesses, Fohrer and Angele, the yearbook would literally consist of two pages without you. To anyone who's actually reading this, go and thank them right now for letting us have a year-book this year!

Sarah, though your technical position was Senior Page Editor, you proved to be the ultimate Savior of the Yearbook. No can ever give you enough credit for how much work you've done for us. Seniors especially, you all owe Sarah more than you know!

Tory, you revolutionized a crucial aspect of the yearbook this year ... we actually had pictures to use on time! This yearbook was so lucky to have a photo editor with so much dedication and responsibility. As much work as everyone did, the yearbook really would not have happened without you Thank you guys, the Big Giant Head.

To the one we're always yelling at, Kyle, you deserve so much more credit than we always give you. You are truly the humor and "spice" behind this yearbook. Thank you so much!

Adam, for the second year in a row, you were the only one to understand the true meaning of a "deadline." We would have no cover, no art, and no life in this yearbook without you. You need to give lessons on how to "Just do it. perfectly," thank you!

To the ultimate party-throwers and money-makers, Martha and Natalie, thank you both so much for your two years of amazing business dedication. (Martha, your money data sheets are definitely being framed for future standards!)

Kristen and Katelyn, the Proofers, thank you for helping us out when we really needed you. Chris, Casey, Kim, Alicia, and Jason, our faithful assistant editors, thank you, thank you, thank you, for all your help in our desperate "Crunch Times"!

Mr. Barry, Mr. Feldmeth, Corey Mundwiler, Jennifer Godwin-Minto, Ryan Katsuyama and the ASB, thank you so much for all your patience, help, and support throughout the year! Your guidance has again pushed us through!

So here it is, our Oakleaves 2003, a true masterpiece product of long weekends, late nights, and immense dedication by our entire staff. Yes, this yearbook put us through much, much stress, but we feel it was definitely worth all the hard work! We hope you enjoy it to the fullest, and that it will bring you fond memories of Poly from this year. And if we hear bad things about it ... beware ... there WILL be a "Revenge of the Nerds'i
