THE PACK

Mr. Greg Feldmeth, over the past 21 years you have had a positive influence on every aspect of Poly life, thus, we would like to dedicate Oak/eaves 2002 to you, our fearless head. From mentoring to teaching, supporting Poly athletics, to single-handedly solving the parking dilemma, you have helped to shape this communuity. You know every one of us by name, and can be called a friend by many. Your presence is not limited solely to the Upper School. You can always be seen riding your bike between the two campuses and with that smile on your face we can see that you really love Poly. As a problem solver, you take to heart the concerns of each individual and the community as a whole.

Mr. Feldmeth, thank you for being a selfless leader. You have made Poly a better place.

Upper School mourns loss of its own in attack

• Poly alumnus dies in terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City; assembly mourns all victims.

The terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11 hit close to home, killing a Poly alumnus and joining members of all four classes of students as a community to aid in the relief effort.

The Poly community suffered a great loss with the death of Matthew Blake Wallens '88. Wallens worked for an investment firm on the lOlst floor of a World Trade Center tower. While at Poly, Wallens played varsity soccer and participated in the theater program. He held lead roles in "Bus Stop," a one-act play and "The Man Who Came to Dinner."

During the usual advisee meeting period on September 11, stud e n t s assembled in Garland auditorium to c o m e together as a community and share feelings about the morning's tragedies. Greg Feldmeth, Interim Headmaster of Poly, addressed the school, and stu-

dents were given the opportunity to share their perspectives.

In an effort to provide comfort to the Poly community, the television in the senior room was open to the entire South Campus and school psychologist, Dr. John Bakaly was available for anyone seeking guidance in the time of distress.

During the week, students, faculty and staff collected approximately $1300 to help The Red Cross deal with the enormous strain on emergency funds. Students eligible to give blood made appointments at the Red Cross Center and local hospitals. In addition, Upper School students offered words of hope on large banners that will be sent to students in New York.

The Upper School gathered on Friday, September 14, the National Day of Mourning and

Recognition, in an extended assembly. After a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and a singing of the National Anthem, parent Catharine Carlson, Chaplain at the Claremont Colleges, reminded members of the Poly community to be grateful for what they have.

At noon, the bells sounded and the busy Upper School came to a standstill as students and faculty observed a moment of silence while staff members draped a large American flag over the bridge attached to the Administration building. Hamilton expressed her pride in the manner in which the Poly community responded to the attacks, saying: "In the midst of such difficult circumstances, our community has stood firmly together, reaching out to others while reaching into themselves."

Students support school, are uncertain about war

A recent Paw Print poll of students shows mixed feelings about America's war on Afghanistan and the school's response to the September 11 attacks. While a majority support the war, most would not be willing to enlist in the military. In addition, 81 % feel the school's response has been appropriate, but many believe too much focus has been placed on discussing current events.

The poll of 239 students reveals that while 47% of students favor the war, 25% are opposed to it while 28 % remain undecided. A slightly smaller number, 41 %, favor ground troops in Afghanistan.

However, when asked if they would enlist in the army to support the effort, 60% said they would not. These numbers indicate that while most students support the war in principle, they, themselves, wouldn't be willing to fight.

In the weeks since the terrorist attacks, the school has promoted discussion mainly through assemblies and advisee group talks. Many students noted that too much attention has been given to this subject, such as discussions over "flag waving."

On Wednesday, October 9, sophomore Minha Popalzai gave a speech at Morning Meeting distinguishing the people of Afghanistan from the ruling Taliban government, saying "I really hope you can understand the plight of the Afghani people, and see that they, along with

Islam, do not reflect the Taliban, or terrorist thoughts."

the school has put on a series of assemblies, including honoring the National Day of Remembrance. Additionally, on September 17, Salam AlMarayati, a member of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, discussed the importance of sep-

aration between Islam and religious extremist terrorism.

Six weeks after the attacks, on October 26, a music assembly was held on the South Campus. The Madrigals music group presented a display of patriotism by ending their performance with a rendition of "America the Beautiful."

Monday, November 12 at 10:45 in the Gamble Gym, Poly will convene an all-school Veterans' Day assembly to honor Poly's alumni, faculty, and staff who have served in The U.S. armed forces. "We planned this event last spring," commented Interim Headmaster Greg Feldmeth, "not knowing we would be at war this November. I think taking the time to gather as a whole school to recognize and say 'thank you' to our veterans has great value."

Deborah Reed appointed new Head of School

• Board of Trustees unanimously upholds Search Committee's appointment of Deborah Reed as new head effective July 2002.

The Head of School Search Committee announced Deborah Reed of Seven Hills School in Cincinnati, Ohio, to be the new Head of School for the 2002-03 school year on Wednesday, December 5. The faculty and administration were notified first with e-mails. A formal announcement written by the President of the Board of Trustees, William Hanna, was then sent to parents and alumni announcing Reed's selection. Reed will officially assume her position on July 1, 2002.

sisting of six trustees, one current parent, one former trustee, one administrator and three teachers, conducted a thorough reference check and an hour and a half interview with each candidate. A personal written statement was required from the candidates which stated their educational philosophy and practice.

Deborah Reed Anyone who could provide knowledge or input to the committee was invited to send recommendations as well.

"We had a sense of really knowing these people well" said Roger Ipswitch, Chair of Upper School History department and a Search Committee member.

Although interviews were the

most significant part of the selection process, the Search Committee encouraged anyone who heard the candidates speak to voice their opinion through input forms. According to Wendy Munger, a member of the Board of Trustees and the Search Committee, the administration and faculty took advantage of this opportunity much more than the student body.

Ten Upper School students responded by submiting the input form, but only six of the evaluations referred to their opinion on Reed or Graham Brown, the second finalist.

Additionally, parents sent in about fifty-five input forms out of approximately seven hundred and fifty families in the school.

Said Munger, "The observations that were most valuable to us were specific comments about strengths or reservations.

Many people who submitted input forms identified the same strengths in Debbie Reed that her references had described."

In the letter sent home to parents and alumni, Hanna expressed that Reed fit the position description prepared by the Search Committee citing that she is a "distinguished educator" and has "demonstrated experience as a leader and manager."

Deborah Reed will be the ninth official Head of Poly since 1907 when Virginia Pease Hunt became President. Sarah Levine recently concluded a tenure of three years from 1998-2001. Greg Feldmeth has filled in as Interim Head since Levine's resignation in spring of 2001.

"The Boaard is convinced that Debbie Reed will be an outstanding Head of Poly" added Hanna.

Student sex poll reveals wide array of beliefs

While Poly students are on the whole less sexually active than the general population, they nevertheless expressed some very liberal views on issues about or relating to sex. According to a CDC (Centers for Disease Control) survey, 50% of females and 75% of male teens in the general U.S. population have had sex, while just 20% of females and 29% of males in the Poly survey admit to having had sexual intercourse.

Poly students in general are more open toward premarital sex and sex in high school. 74 % of Poly teens said sex was okay in high school, but only 22% of nationally polled teens said that teenagers should be having sex. In addition, while 67% of young

adults feel that sex before marriage is morally acceptable, 88 % of Poly students surveyed endorse sex before marriage.

Also, older students were more likely to have told their friends (100% of juniors and 93% of seniors). But the opposite was true when parents were concerned: younger students shared more with their parents than older students did (11 % of juniors and 21 % of

seniors, opposed to 29% of freshmen and

33 % of sophomores).

Perhaps s t udents need an

authority figure to talk to, though, because 15% of sexually active Poly students do not know where to obtain a means of artificial birth control. When asked what they would do in the event of pregnancy, 16% of students said they would put the child up for adoption, 28 % would raise the child, but an overwhelming 56 % said they would have an abortion. Nationwide, 41 % of teens who become pregnant have an abor-

tion and 61 % of those abortions are done without their parent's knowledge or consent.

One of the significant issues we tried to uncover through the poll was what reasons students gave for having sex. "To feel good" and "to express love in a new way" were the most cited reasons. Other less-mentioned reasons included peer/social pressure, pressure from partners, curiousity, rebellion and hormones.

In a poll commissioned by Planned Parenthood, however, the most important reasons teens ref erred to were peer/social pressure, "it feels good," and pressure from a partner. Interestingly, "a new expression of love" was among the least mentioned reasons for having sex among nationwide teens, whereas it was one of the top reasons among Poly students.

The Journey

It's an amazing road to travel. That of a child becoming a man. There are many roads that can be taken. The choices seem to be endless. Most amazing is that there is really no true map to follow and no one destination to find. One's journey relies upon the love and support of parents and family, the knowledge and wisdom of teachers, the influence of friends and, perhaps most importantly, on the inner strength and intuition of the traveler himself.

Brett, your journey so far has been a joy to watch. You have accepted and returned the love of your family, you have absorbed much from your teachers and role models, you have chosen your friends wisely and you have demonstrated the strength to circumvent the worst temptations of your teenage years. Perhaps the most amazing part is the incredible sense of fun and humor that you have been willing to share with those of us who have been on the journey with you. It has been such a pleasure!

There is no doubt in our minds that you are ready for the next leg of the trip. You have chosen a road that is truly less traveled. I can't believe you're a senior... as I search through our family album so many memories come to mind. I remember on one of our vacations to the Caribbean when Dad and Kimbo went diving, you were still too young to be certified. You snorkeled with me on top of the water... you knew sometimes I got scared, so you grabbed my hand and we just explored the waters ourselves ... You have always been kind, sentimental, a caring son and always an optimist. Also, about 3 years ago, when Dad and I went to a school show, and you were up on stage, you started singing. I almost died .I never knew you had such a nice voice. You always sang at home, but you never sounded that good. You surprised me again when you did Grease. You were great! So who ever thought a blonde and a junior could actually pull off putting together a yearbook? It definitely didn't come easily: long weekends, late nights, and much, MUCH stressing ... but the making of this yearbook brought forth many surprises ... we did it! And despite all our yelling and stressing, we really couldn't have done it without all our staff

Kyle and Your guys' sense of humor truly brightened up the entire yearbook. Terra, our multi-functional editor, and Kyle, our "humor" supplier, you guys always lightened up the gloomy weekends in the Publications Room- We can't thank you enough.

So here's our yearbook: our pride ... and joy? Well, haha, maybe not entirely, but we think this year's work was definitely worth all the time we put into it.
