In the realm of Polytechnic Schoo(, where everyone we are Q'l'larter and better than everyone people can get a little with our weird no homecoming, no ranking an advkor to make we are politically correct, a to make we are and two college to make Poly an (kt of alumni in college... Poly will never be normal. Thk year we are attempting to explain our unique to not mentally inclined.
My first mission is to acquaint you with "Polyspeak." Here are some words and phrases that have special meanings at Poly.
senior = superior being junior = moving up there sophomore = almost important freshman = nonentity
class trip = dirt, bonding, and $5 million of camping equipment that's never used library = Shhhhhhhh! No breathing allowed!!!!!! lunch truck= grease and heart disease. YUM science books = weight lifting
senior patio = senior paradise
senior room = testosterone pit
junior patio = landfill sophomore patio = empty (they are all off flirting with upperclassmen)
freshman patio = wait, they don't have one quiz= final exam
weird brown liquid in glass jar = Mr. Pickering's coffee yearbook staff = coolest people on campus
Paw Print staff = messiest people on campus assembly= nap time
Mr. Braman says, "quick announcement" = extended day
A Period = too early
B Period = still too early
Research Methodologies = nap time
D Period on Friday = absolute torture
Ad Bio test = long Wednesday night
From time to time, these icons will pop up to give you some pointers. Each icon serves a different purpose, from telling you how to stay awake during a lecture assembly, to how to place an order at the lunch truck. I'll try to help, but all I can say is GOOD LUCK! YOU"RE GONNA NEED IT!

• History teacher Zetlian organizes mock debate assembly designed to encourage interest in presidential elections.

With the November 7 national election drawing near, the Upper School will participate in a mock presidential election this Friday November 3, designed to promote student awareness.
This event was triggered by Upper School history teacher Garine Zetlian's observation of political apathy among America's youth, a trend also seen in the south campus.
According to a recent Paw Print Poll, student interest in the presidential campaign has been only marginal even as candidate rallies and debates have heated up the national political scene. The majority of students polled, nearly 66%, indicated that they have been following the presidential campaign "not much" or "not at all," and 28% indicated "some."
As a remedy to this lack of student awareness, Zetlian has introduced the "Election 2000 Project" to her American Government and Politics class. It requires students to follow the actual steps candidates take on the way to political office. Since early October, Zetlian's students have been campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore,
George W. Bush, Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan within the Upper School.
Through her class's work in the "Election 2000 Project," Zetlian hopes to emphasize the importance of political awareness at the high school age. "People become voters in school. If they aren't excited or made aware about issues at an early age, they will stay that way," she said.
Signs of their progress were noticeable with campaign posters on display throughout the south campus, telephone polls were conducted of Upper School students this past weekend, students presented skits in morning meeting on Monday and an assembly is planned for Friday.
The assembly will feature Zetlian's students, who will assume the role of the candidates, give speeches and answer questions. Upper School history teacher Greg Feldmeth will act as the moderator.
A mock presidential election will follow next Tuesday during advisee meetings when students will be given ballots on which to vote for a candidate.
According to the Paw Print poll, 36.4% of students currently support Democratic candidate Gore while 24.2% support Republican candidate Bush. In addition, Green Party candidate Nader earned 19.7% of the votes and Reform Party candidate Buchanan, 4.5%.
• New assembly series looks to present student body with topics of ethics, values.

In the last two weeks, students saw the launch of an assemblyspeaker series designed to educate and promote awareness of community values.
Coordinated by Ethics Advisor John Braman, the series will offer lectures spanning a variety of topics.
The series marks a change from the usual emphasis on entertainment-oriented assemblies.
"These speeches are supposed to be intelligent, thought-provoking presentations that build awareness and make us more conscious of our values as a community," said Braman.
Plans for the series, of a length yet to be determined, are preliminary.
Speakers being considered include politicians, actors, writers, social activists and ethicists. Future presentations, including one at the next assembly tentatively scheduled for December 8, are open to student suggestions.
The first assembly, held on Friday, October 20, featured Dr. Keith Naylor.
A professor at Occidental College, Naylor tied students' outdoor education experiences with place of work and place of living to encourage greater appreciation of daily environment.
The assembly addressed issues such as littering the campus and the importance of outdoor education.
Dr. Don Miller, a professor at USC, spoke at the second assembly on religious diversity.
Miller introduced "The Soul of Los Angeles," a photography collection by Jerry Berndt that will be presented in Garland Theater.
This will be the first time
Berndt's "Soul" will be exhibited in a high school.
The idea for a speaker series focusing on serious issues came from Upper School Director Grace Hamilton.
Hamilton noted that similar speakers have been wellreceived.
"In the past, we've brought speakers who were poets, archaelogists and professors. Students really enjoyed themthey're dynamic and interesting," said Hamilton.
"The topics didn't really mean anything to me, but I liked the second one better," said junior Michael Luk.
• Recent incident serves to remind students and faculty of the origins of Poly's rivalries with neighboring schools.

A rivalry instigated online between San Marino High School and Poly escalated into a physical confrontation two weeks ago. Seniors from SMHS exchanged strong words with a group of Poly juniors in the Upper School parking lot before they were dispersed by Upper School Director of Student Activities Laurianne Williams. The incident was the culmination of insults and challenges issued from both sides for over a month via a student-operated website.
Faculty from both schools took immediate action to address the situation. Upper School Director Grace Hamilton and SMHS Vice Principal Andrea Mitchell have spoken to students involved.
According to Hamilton, the
issue has been resolved on both the Poly and the SMHS ends.
In addition, measures have been taken towards addressing the internet situation. "Any posted messages that are threatening to students will be deleted immediately," said junior Alex Benzer, the site's administrator.
It was particularly difficult for the administration to handle this situation because the conflict began not on campus, but online. "When it comes to computers, students out-distance the faculty. The internet is new for everyone. We are concerned for the safety of students on campus," said Upper School Director of Student Activities Laurianne Williams.
But while the forum of conflict may be new, the Upper School is very familiar with school rivalries.
From a source of healthy competition to an impetus for meanspirited pranks, rivalries have been an integral part of Poly history. The rivalry with Flintridge is the oldest, dating back to
when Poly first joined the Prep League.
"The rivalry between Poly and Flintridge existed even before I started working here," said history teacher Roger Ipswitch, who has been at Poly for 31 years.
However, through the years Poly rivals have varied. In the 80's, when Poly played 8-man football, the main rival was Rio Hondo. Now, the rival Is Westridge in softball and Chadwick in boys and girls basketball.
"We're unusual in that we don't have just one school that is our rival. Poly rivalries are based on the equity of competition," said boys basketball coach Brad Hall.
While the schools Poly consider as rivals often vary, many schools single out Poly as their rival. At Flintridge, sports matches against Poly are always major events. Before games against Poly, Flintridge students have been known to sport orange pins reading "Poly" with a slash through it. Flintridge
also holds "tacky orange days" where students wear obnoxious assortments of orange.
"Poly is our main rival," acknowledged Flintridge Athletic Director Alex Riverra.
According to Assistant Head of School and former Chandler teacher Greg Feldmeth, "Mr. Chandler would rate the year's success based on how well the school did against Poly in sports."
In the past, Flintridge, Brentwood, Webb and Rio Hondo have all made the football game against Poly their Homecoming Game.
Sports are often the root of the rivalries.
According to Riverra, the rivalry with Flintridge began when former Flintridge basketball coach Tom Bradbury left to work for Poly. Prep League referee and former Rio Hondo student Matt Rascon says that the rivalry with Rio Hondo dates back to 1984, when Poly and Rio Hondo were the top two 8-man football teams in the league.
• Following a year of meetings, committee presents faculty and administration with a series of recommendations.

The Academic Integrity Advisory Committee addressed moral and disciplinary issues on campus in a meeting with faculty members held November 8. Committee representatives seniors Charles Kornblith and Stephanie Lowe and junior Ryan Thornton, presented findings from discussions over the
course of the year to 22 teachers and administrators, including Head of School Sarah Levine.
"We gave a series of recommendations intended to promote a sense of community and the advancement of scholastic morality," said Thornton.
Focusing on community values, faculty and students discussed improving communication about moral issues through Paw Print articles and continuing dialogue between students and teachers.
In addition, it was recommended that regular faculty meetings focus on addressing
student needs and encouraging an environment of respect and trust.
According to faculty advisor John Braman, the panel presentation was "a success a mature and enjoyable experience."
Student representatives were also pleased with results.
"I'm pretty enthusiastic that there will be changes in the near future in how Poly is run," said Kornblith.
Early last school year, Braman invited interested students to meet about ethical issues on campus. He also hoped to elicit a response to "Common
Understandings," a faculty and administration-sponsored document dealing with encouraging students to maintain integrity on assignments and tests.
A group of fifteen volunteers began meeting on these issues approximately twice per month.
As the year progressed, meetings focused more on creating a moral environment and analyzing how the school is run.
At the end of the year Rusha Modi '00 reported findings from meeting notes taken by Braman. This report was included in the committee's presentation this year.
• After a hard-fought battle with Aquinas in the CIF finals, Panthers finish season with a record of 12-1.

Varsity football's 19-game winning streak came to an end last Saturday in a 27-21 loss to Aquinas in CIF Division XIlI Finals. It was the team's second consecutive appearance in the championship, although this year the Panthers were outmatched by a superior Falcon running attack featuring junior Glenn Ohaeri and senior Thomas Walton.
On Poly's first possession, senior quarterback Ben Imhoff
completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Robert Small after converting twice on fourth down. The Panthers, however, were then held scoreless until the fourth quarter.
Senior safety Kirk Herald then intercepted a pass on the Falcons' second play from scrimmage. On the team's next possession Herald appeared to score a 32 yard touchdown, but it was called back because of a penalty. Senior placekicker Dru Ratnasoma missed a SO-yard field goal, turning over the ball to the Falcons. Two plays later, Ohaeri scored on a 75-yard touchdown run.
The Falcons went on to score two more touchdowns in the second half before Herald caught
an 11-yard touchdown pass from Imhoff. The extra point by Ratnasoma brought the score to 20-14.
With eight minutes left in the game, junior Brett Nungesser recovered an Aquinas fumble on the Falcons' 26-yard line. However, the offense failed to convert on fourth-and-14, turning the ball back over to Aquinas.
On a crucial fourth down play with 2:39 left, Walton broke out for a 53-yard run on fourth down, to set up the Falcon's final score.
The team then drove down the field and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Imhoff to Caldwell, bringing the score to 27-21, but the score

In putting together a guide on navigating the vast and intriguing world of Polytechnic School, we have learned (the hard way) how to make a yearbook. Creating this year's book has probably been the longest, most difficult process in Poly's history. Deadlines seemed to be relative or nonexistent. Although we thought we would never see this day, Oak/eaves 2001 is finally complete. Thank you to our ever changing, always growing, team of editors. Your hard work and long weekends in THE ROOM have made this book possible.
Kirsten and Katie - Thank you for always coming in at a moment's notice. Your creative commentary and innovative layouts have livened up page at=ter page.
Erica and Elinor - Your hard work is especially impressive, because you guys are always SO busy. Layout became a universal job, but thank you for adapting.

Jeni, Jessie, Marisa, and David - No one will ever be able to explain when it started to go wrong, but amazingly, through Thanksgiving and Winter break and long weekends, you finished 88 beautiful senior pages. Thank you for enduring novels meant to fit in minute text boxes and lost disks. We are so grateful for your patience.

Being the editors of this year's Oak/eaves was more than either of us could have ever bargained for.
