Mrs. Sarafian, best known for ! being "the Book Lady," takes care of aU our classroom literary needs. She organizes book distribution and billing for the entire upper school. In addition, she is in charge of AP testing. Thanks to her, our AP forms get done correctly and on time.
Mrs. Carolyn Fox is possibly the most amazing woman to walk the planet. She runs the upper school office, which enco-mpasses typing up the advisee bulletin, keeping track of all school supplies, and dealing with all of the cky Poly high school faculty. Prekindergarten students and their teachers gather on the first day of school with headmaster Mike Babcock and lower school director Jolly Urner to record their auspicious debut as the class of 2000.

The burst of enthusiasm which accompanies the opening of a new school year is always an invigorating experience, and although it has happened seventy-eight times before on the Poly campus, the level of energy and involvement is particularly high this year. We opened our doors to 795 students and 77 faculty members, which means that for the tenth consecutive year, we have more students and
The increase in students came about this year as a result of a nine-month study by the Board of Trustees to determine the optimum size for Poly. Although the board decided that it would not be in the school's best interests to undertake any significant enlargement at this time, it did seem feasible to make modest increases in the middle and upper schools. Thus there are sixty-four sixth graders instead of the usual fifty-seven, and eighty freshmen compared with seventy-two
slightly larger, the actual teaching-class size will remain at sixteen to twenty students per class, as our teachers continue to feel that the smallness of their classes contributes significantly to the learning process and to the quality of the academic enterprise. The increase in the number of faculty is partly due to the number of students and is partly the result of two special grants. Margaret asked me to write the editors' parting message at the end of this year's Oak leaves. Even this easy task I did at the last minute, after she had reminded me a thousand times. Although we have shared the title of Editor in Chief this last year, the largest organizational and responsible force behind this yearbook has been Margaret. For that I thank you, Marge, for all the weekends, and weekdays, when I was busy or sick and you had to take on the tremendous task of being editor all by yourself. Margaret has managed to produce this incredible yearbook in spite of my presence.
This year has not been an easy one; it seems as though at every deadline we have had to perform some sort of miracle to even come close to meeting it. Thanks to a team of quite repsonsible editors, who amazingly did all of the work we assigned them in very short periods of time, we were able to get through close deadlines and disasters. I owe so much to these editors, who in essence, without much of a staff, pulled off completing what is actually one of the longest yearbooks that has been made in a number of years.
First, the senior page editors: Ara, Kathryn, and Janet- you guys somehow got our entire class to listen to you and work with you, and then managed to turn out almost a third of the pages in the entire yearbook really quickly. I know how much trouble you guys went through and how much . pressure we had to put on you, but I am extremely grateful and proud of the work you've done.
Rusha and Kristine- again, without much of a staff, you two amazingly laid out page after page, each one more visually apperitling and exact than the last. I want to thank you guys for keeping the greater part of our publication together and for creating the look of our yearbook on the inside.
On the outside, I have Jon Perry and Derek Yu to thank for the spectacular cover art. You two guys have an extraordinary talent for computer art and a sense of creativity and humor that never fails to surprise me. Despite setbacks and discouraging deadlines, you guys kept doing great work and have helped make this yearbook follow our Las Vegas theme in every detail.
Our photo editors, Matt, Nathaniel and Lawrence- I was immediately impressed by the sheer amount of photos that kept showing up in the publications room, providing us with lots of choices and material for candids pages, group pictures, and sports spreads. You guys consistently gave us what we needed and were even able to work around setbacks like the rain and CIF delays in our spring sports season to help get our pages completed. You guys also made wonderful use of your staff. Thank you all very much.
A yearbook without text( with the exception of maybe this page) would be pretty boring and not very memorable. But thanks to Joanna, Becky and Jennifer, I feel the captions and blurbs express the humorous side of our yearbook staff and I would like to thank you guys for your colorful addition to this year's book.
Our proof editors, Uday and Jan, along with Monica, have had probably the least fun job on yearbook, but probably the most important. Thanks for taking on this task, and making sure this yearbook is flawless.
Last, but not least, I want to express my appreciation to the Business editors for dealing with the senior parents, the local businesses and most importantly, our Winter Formal. Without your guys' efforts, this yearbook would not exist. Thanks for laying out all those dedication pages and for putting on a great dance!
I can't say I would be yearbook editor again, should I have the opportunity, but I know that if I were to have the same supportive staff and partner, then I might consider it. On my part, and for Margaret too, I want to thank everyone who contributed to this yearbook and helped it get along, including the all-knowing Jim Barry, and I want to wish next year's staff and editors good luck!
