A WASHINGTON TREASURE

Pelli Clarke & Partners' mixed-use building in Foggy Bottom, near George Washington University, appropriates the primordial, comforting archetype of the curve to aspire to the expressive signs of Antoni Gaudi and Daniel Burnham. From the outgrowths on the façade reminiscent of La Pedrera, to the triangular intention of the layout, though more compact than that of the Flatiron building, everything here seems to vibrate, together with "Einstein's curved universe" (Oscar Niemeyer), in the search for a fluid, morphologically complex and, at times, impalpable expressive dimension. The imposing glass palace undulates outside and inside, equally transparent in its vertical surfaces, to alternate the metal exoskeleton of the exterior with the rhythmic scanning of the interior, characterised by the veneered wood baffles that populate the triple-height atrium and the vault. The cavea, connected to the atrium by a ramp, explodes into the trapezoidal body of the complex like the thòlos of the Treasure of Atreus, which rises majestically over the dromos giving access to it. L’edificio a uso misto che lo studio Pelli Clarke & Partners ha congeniato a Foggy Bottom, nei pressi della George Washington University, si appropria dell’archetipo primordiale e consolatorio della curva, per aspirare ai segni espressivi di Antoni Gaudì e Daniel Burnham. Dalle escrescenze in facciata memori de La Pedrera, all’intenzione triangolare dell’impianto, anche se meno ardita di quella del Flatiron bulding, tutto qui sembra vibrare, insieme con “l’universo curvo di Einstein” (Oscar Niemeyer), alla ricerca di una dimensione espressiva fluida, morfologicamente complessa e, a tratti, impalpabile. L’imponente palazzo di vetro ondeggia fuori e dentro, ugualmente trasparente nelle superfici verticali, per alternare all’esoscheletro metallico dell’esterno, la ritmica scansione dell’interno, caratterizzata dai deflettori impiallacciati in legno che popolano l’atrio a tripla altezza e la cavea. Quest’ultima, connessa all’atrio da un sistema di rampe sinuose, deflagra nel corpo trapezoidale del complesso come la thòlos del Tesoro di Atreo, che si erge maestosa sul dromos che vi dà accesso.
