THE STRATIFICATION OF KNOWLEDGE

The design of the Saint-Paul media centre on the west coast of Reunion Island by Peripheriques Architects begins with a reflection on a new centrality for the city. In the peripheral context of a naturalistic landscape, the building marks the territory with its image, its legibility, from the Tamarini road to the great landscape, expressing the entrance to the city with a strong urban and architectural act. Nature penetrates the building, erasing the boundaries between inside and outside, to connect the building and the landscape. Between the sea and the mountains, the building takes on the compact form of a cube. The façade effect is a stack of irregular sheets, recalling the stratification of knowledge inside a media library. The light, undulating slats that compose it vibrate according to the time of day and "blink", breaking up the homogeneity of the façade to offer impressive views of the Indian Ocean.
La progettazione del media center di Saint-Paul nella costa occidentale dell’isola della Réunion, ad opera dello studio Peripheriques Architects, inizia con una riflessione su una nuova centralità per la città. Nel contesto periferico di un paesaggio naturalistico, l’edificio segna il territorio con la sua immagine, la sua leggibilità, dalla strada dei Tamarini al grande paesaggio, esprimendo l'ingresso della città con un forte atto urbanistico e architettonico. La natura penetra nell'edificio, cancellando i limiti tra interno ed esterno, per connettere l'edificio e il paesaggio. Tra mare e montagna, l’edificio assume la forma compatta di un cubo. L'effetto facciata è una pila di fogli irregolari, a ricordare la stratificazione della conoscenza all'interno di una mediateca. Le leggere lamelle ondulate che la compongono vibrano a seconda delle ore del giorno ed “ammiccano”, rompendo l’omogeneità del prospetto per offrire viste impressionanti sull'Oceano Indiano.
