WOVEN INTO THE LANDSCAPE

The Garden Café, located in the Western Cape region of South Africa, was designed by London-based Steyn Studio in collaboration with South African-based landscape architects Square One. The project was designed according to the geometries and vegetation of the place, so as to fit harmoniously into the landscape. The garden represents a microcosm of the Breedekloof Valley, where users can learn about the various species that make up the region's flora. The didactic garden is served by an underground refreshment building overlooking the elliptical garden. The entrance to the building is formed by a lattice structure, which forms a basin to welcome the visitor. The entire system was designed following the contours of the land and respecting the visual and perceptive hierarchies of the site; the architectural element never competes with the natural one. Il Garden Cafè, situato nella regione del Capo Occidentale del Sud Africa è stato progettato dallo studio londinese Steyn Studio in collaborazione con il gruppo di architetti paesaggisti sudafricani Square One. Il progetto è stato disegnato secondo quelle che sono le geometrie e la vegetazione del luogo, in modo da essere inserito armoniosamente nel paesaggio. Il giardino rappresenta un microcosmo della Breedekloof Valley, dove gli utenti possono conoscere le varie specie che compongono la flora della regione. Il giardino didattico è servito da una struttura di ristoro ipogea che affaccia sul giardino a forma ellittica. L’ingresso dell’edificio è formato da una struttura a traliccio, che forma una conca per accogliere il visitatore. Tutto il sistema è stato progettato seguendo l’andamento del terreno e rispettando le gerarchie visive e percettive del luogo, l’elemento architettonico non entra mai in competizione con quello naturale.
