FUTUDESIGN RESPECTFUL GRAFT

Helsinki Central Station has been one of the most iconic places in Finnish architecture for more than a century. Its iconic image in the urban landscape, the result of an early twentieth-century design competition won by Eliel Saarinen, was the reference for the design of the Scandic Grand Central Hotel Helsinki extension by Futudesign. The Finnish studio approached the extension of the block of former station administration offices that now houses the hotel with great respect and the awareness that it could manipulate a symbol of the city. The design idea, aimed at the contemporary without forgetting the past, centred on the choice of inserting a semicircular shape inside the body of the building on the north side to recall the entrance to the station with its symbolic arch from above. The choice of shape for the crowning of the addition to the block also recalls the decorative elements in Helsinki station and therefore Saarinen's design. The architectural choices for the expansion of the hotel underline the historical analysis of the pre-existing building and the desire to emphasise the past by trying to reinterpret its features through a material and spatial narrative which is both conscious and reverent. The device is a true graft that adapts to what has been and becomes inspiration for a vision of the future. La Stazione Centrale di Helsinki è da più di un secolo uno dei luoghi più rappresentativi dell’architettura finlandese. La sua immagine così iconica nel panorama urbano, frutto di un concorso di progettazione di inizio Novecento vinto da Eliel Saarinen, è stata il riferimento per il progetto dell’ampliamento dello Scandic Grand Central Hotel Helsinki dello studio Futudesign. L’estensione del blocco degli ex uffici amministrativi della stazione che attualmente accolgono l’Hotel è stata affrontata dallo studio finlandese con profondo rispetto e con la consapevolezza di poter manipolare un simbolo della città. L’idea di progetto, rivolta al contemporaneo senza dimenticare il passato, si è incentrata sulla scelta di inserire all’interno del corpo di fabbrica al lato Nord una forma semicircolare così da richiamare in vista zenitale l’ingresso della stazione con il suo simbolico arco di ingresso. Anche in merito al coronamento del blocco in aggiunta, non si può non notare la scelta della forma che riconduce agli elementi decorativi presenti nella stazione di Helsinki e, quindi, al design di Saarinen. Le scelte architettoniche per l’ampliamento dell’Hotel sottolineano l’analisi storica della preesistenza e la volontà di enfatizzare il passato provando a rileggerne i tratti attraverso un racconto materico e spaziale consapevole e reverente. Il dispositivo è un vero e proprio innesto che si adegua a ciò che è stato e che diventa ispirazione per una visione del futuro.
