Le projet de Leandro Machado, intitulé Archéologie du Chemin, résulte de son désir de parcourir sa ville, Porto Alegre, depuis son centre jusqu’aux quartiers périphériques les plus méconnus qui n’en constituent pas moins d’autres centres, di érents, parfois mêmes plus authentiques, comme certains quartiers gaucho (terme qui désigne au Sud du Brésil et en Amérique latine en général, un gardien de troupeaux). L’enregistrement de cette déambulation constitue l’œuvre qui a pris la forme d’une enquête quasi anthropologique commencée en décembre 2015 et poursuivie de façon régulière pendant plusieurs mois. Visant à déconstruire ce que les habitants pensent profondément savoir, il tente de recréer mentalement la totalité de l’espace de sa ville, depuis ses zones sombres, les condos en nombre croissant qui attestent des problèmes brûlants liés au contrôle et à la sécurité. C’est aussi l’écosystème de la ville qui est apparu dans sa fragilité, ou alors la force des manifestations et rituels traditionnels, preuve tangible du mélange et de l’hybridation des cultures si forts au Brésil. D’un quartier à l’autre, de la richesse paisible de certains à la misère des autres, Leandro Machado fait le constat d’un certain malaise qui traverse les villes brésiliennes et le pays en général mais aussi d’une grande force de résistance aux contraintes imposées. L’enregistrement du réel, le regard distancié mais incarné, font de cette vidéo un témoignage poignant de la situation politique et sociale du Brésil, sans e ort d’esthétisation et pour seule force celle du réel dans sa nudité. L’artiste ne se contente pas de consigner le réel et le documenter, mais fait de cette déambulation un acte de performance où il se met en scène accompagné par le photographe Paulo Corrêa qui a enregistré des tranches de vie quotidienne.

Leandro Machado’s urge to travel the length and breadth of his native Porto Alegre was the starting point for his Path Archaeology project. e journey starts from the center out to the lesser-known, at times more authentic, outskirts that are centers in their own way, like some of the gaucho neighbourhoods (which, in Latin America and in the south of Brazil means a skilled horseman or cowhand). His wanderings became an almost anthropological study, starting in December 2015 and continuing in regular spurts for months. e idea was to deconstruct what the city’s inhabitants think they know so well, by mentally recreating the cityscape using its darker zones as a starting point, the growing number of condos that have come to represent the burning issues of control and security. e project also revealed the fragility of the city’s ecosystem, and the power of traditional events and rituals that provide tangible proof of the hybrid nature of Brazilian culture. From one neighbourhood to the next, from the tranquil wealth of some, to the poverty of others, Leandro Machado highlights the malaise that is present in Brazilian cities and the country as a whole, but he also reveals a strong sense of resistance to the constraints that are being imposed. He records what is real, with a distant but incarnated eye, without any attempt to aestheticize, relying only on the power of the bare truth, which makes this video a poignant testimony to Brazil’s current political and social situation. Machado does not just record and document the real, his journey is a performance piece where he directs himself in slices of everyday life, in tandem with photographer Paulo Corrêa.
