Restaurateur et peintre du Roi au Musée national d’Abomey au Bénin, Cyprien Tokoudagba s’est frotté aux techniques de peinture et sculpture anciennes et nourri constamment de mythes et symboles religieux du vaudou. Tout en respectant les techniques traditionnelles, Cyprien Tokoudagba a cependant pris beaucoup de libertés pour en faire une œuvre personnelle, notamment avec ses toiles où sur fond blanc il représente des rois, des dieux et les symboles des croyances ancestrales. Le style dépouillé du fond, l’hiératisme de ses gures, les couleurs vives associées aux nuances du gris ajoutent un caractère quasi sacré à ses gures peintes.

Restaurateur and painter to the King at the Abomey national Museum in Benin, Cyprien Tokoudagba works with ancient painting and sculpting techniques inspired by the religious myths and symbols of voodoo. While he takes care to respect traditional techniques, Tokoudagba also leaves himself plenty of leeway to make the work his own, in particular his paintings where he represents kings, Gods and ancestral symbols on a white backdrop. e bare background, the hieratic nature of the gures and the bright colours with nuances of grey add an almost sacred feel to his painted gures.
