SHPYC Summer Camp 2023

GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members.

The SHPYC team and I would like to take the time to THANK all of our members for continuing to come out and use your club!

Also, a BIG THANK YOU for your patience while we finish up our last projects on the property for the year!

We hope that you have enjoyed seeing all of the new amenities that SHM has brought to the club this year. The Outrigger has been a huge success, my hope was to have the deck finished a while ago but as luck would have it we have had to wait on the county. It is said that, good things come to those who wait, so we will be having a great time on the deck celebrating with a complimentary member party as soon as we get the Certificate of Occupancy.

Each week in the month of November we will feature a new soup! With the cooler weather here, it is the perfect addition to any meal.

Sip and Shop is on the 3rd of November and we have many vendors for our members to visit with.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars!

Tapas Night is back again and Chef Andres and his team always show up and show out! It is a popular night at the club and we hope you don’t miss it!

Italian Night is back on the 16th. Come enjoy our pasta station and duo lasagna! We have a Chili Cook off on the 17th. Sign up and bring your favorite chili and there will be prizes and a whole lot of fun!

We look forward to seeing you on Thanksgiving! Please make your reservations early so that we can make sure that we have space available for you! We have a Thanksgiving to-go menu, as well, if you would like the club to prepare any sides or desserts for you.

Kids' cookie decorating on the 25th will be fun and we look forward to seeing your children then. Please let us know if they have any allergies so that we can prepare for them.

We ordered 10 more dock carts for use at the club and they have arrived. If you want to winterize your boat, call the Ship Store and they will be more than happy to assist you. We have so many wonderful items in the Ship Store that would make great holiday gifts for your family.

CHEF'S CORNER Chicken with tomatoes, pancetta, & mozzarella Serves: 2-4 People

Directions Step 1 Heat oven to 400 degrees. Season chicken with salt and pepper.

Ingredients • 3½ pounds bone-in chicken pieces • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon black pepper • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 5 ounces pancetta, diced • 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 2 anchovy filets • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes • 1 can whole plum tomatoes • 1 large basil bundle • 8 oz mozzarella

Step 2 In a large oven-proof skillet, warm oil over medium-high heat.

Add pancetta and cook, stirring frequently, until browned. Use a slotted spoon to transfer pancetta to a paper-towel-lined plate.

Step 3 Add chicken to the skillet. Sear, turning only occasionally, until well browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a large plate. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon oil.

Step 4 Add garlic, diced anchovies and red pepper flakes to skillet; Sauté for 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes and basil, breaking up tomatoes with a spatula. Stir occassionally until sauce thickens somewhat, about 10 minutes.

Step 5 Return chicken to skillet. Transfer skillet to oven and cook, uncovered, until chicken is no longer pink, about 30 minutes.

Step 6 Add mozzarella pieces over skillet, until cheese is melted and bubbling, Garnish with pancetta and chopped basil before serving.

BOATING & MARINA NEWS

BY: HARRY SMITH - MARINA MANAGER End of Season Boat Assessment Fall, as you know, is the best time for boating! Cooler days, calm water and less people. This really makes this time of year “prime boating time”. Fall is also a great time to assess things, especially after a busy boating season.

Suggested items to assess.

• Shore power cord- inspect and replace if needed. Call the marina for an inspection!

• Dock line- replace any frayed or weathered dock line. Make sure lines are properly sized for your boat.

• Covers- properly sized and secure, snaps, tie downs, etc.

• Boat condition- scheduled a full detail or a boat wash to maintain the gelcoat.

• Routine Maintenance- oil changes, impellers, spark plugs, etc.

• Come up with a plan to winterize. (Let us help!)

• Inventory all safety equipment.

• Assess PFD and throw out any worn out or weathered jackets Marina Manager Reminder Although boating tends to slow down this time of year it doesn’t mean to stop thinking about safety!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The Deckers This month we take a look at one of the cutest families we have here at SHPYC, the Deckers! This family of four have been members for six years now.

This family used to reside on Mountain Island Lake until they made the decision to build a home in Cornelius.

When their oldest son Asher was just six months old, they decided to join the club in hopes of meeting friends and families who enjoy the water as well.

When discussing the events they look forward too, the whole family chimed in! Asher so charmingly said, "[my favorite events] are the kids' events, the movie nights, and the summer camps." His father, Chris chose the Fleet Commissioning as his favorite of event because of the energy surrounding the opening of the season and Chantal's favorite is the kick off to summer events.

Not only are they a fan of the land events but getting out on the water is important to this bunch. Before they moved to the SHPYC Marina, they had their boat in dry storage and now are loving the ease of access to their boat.

Chantal said "with the kids being so small its really convenient to go out on the boat in the morning and [when we] come back [...] the kids can swim around [in the pool] while we get lunch from The Outrigger." In addition to family time on the boat they have enjoyed The Poker Run, Raft Ups, and water sports with friends out on LKN. If speaking to a prospective member this family would definitely highlight the events along with the SHPYC staff. "[The team] always goes above and beyond to accommodate and make the place [...] feel like home," Mr. Decker kindly mentioned.

Keep an eye out for the Deckers around the club! They are such a lovely family that loves spending time here at the club or out on the water! We hope to see you around for many years to come.

SHPYC Dogs of the Month This month we take a look at a fur baby from ouor Fleet Committee, Mellie. Mellie joined the SHPYC family with her human Laura Wendt, our 2023 Social Chair last year.

She is a four-year-old blonde lab / shepherd / husky mix rescue with the sweetest disposition. The name Mellie originated from Laura’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia but also for her mellow personality and mellow yellow color.

Some of her favorite activities inclued: hiking, chasing bunnies & squirrels in the neighborhood, boat rides, and smelling all the sniffs (which is how she got the nickname “Smell Mel”).

If you see this friendly fur baby around the club, make sure to say hi! She loves making new friends.

BY: STEVE HOSLER - 2023 COMMODORE WOW … what an incredible autumn season at SHPYC! It’s a wonderful time with temperature's cooling, leaves changing, sun shining, and fair winds blowing.

October October was filled with successful and fun events. Thank you club membership for your participation and excitement in making our October events so fun and so successful!

Sailing Fall Fellowship Series: Fun-for-all Sunday races [5] with awards & reception concluding 10/8 … great sailing and fellowship among sailors and Race Committee.

31st Pen Cup Sailing Regatta 10/13-10/15: Tremendous 31st Pen Cup Regatta weekend with wonderful on-shore and off-shore activities & sailing. Thanks to our SHPYC sailors, incredible volunteers, Club, and members!

Pirate Treasure Hunt & Fall Festival: There were pirates everywhere! Families had an exciting search for stolen treasure, traversed waypoints focused on fun & safety, and ultimately were successful in retrieving the stolen treasure.

Thanks to our incredible volunteers, the Club, and totally engaged membership … Arg!

Commodore’s Hours Costume Party: It was great to see the creative and festive Halloween costumes.

Trick-or-Treat Walk the Docks: Our decorated docks wowed the crowd as families trick-or-treated along the docks!

November Fall Blood Drive: Please come out and support our community and help save the lives of those in need 11/4. It is a wonderful cause.

Chili Cookoff: So fun and so good! Come out and enjoy the superb chili cooking skills of our proud members 11/17. Mmm Mmm good!

Commodore’s Hours & Member Mixers: Fridays … come out and enjoy! It’s a great time to socialize, spend time with good friends and new members, and enjoy the SHPYC hospitality.

The fall is just a wonderful time at SHPYC … filled with tons of exciting and fun activities/events for all!

SAILING SCENE

Fall is now in the air and the leaves are beginning to change.

As we hearty sailors are on the water year around, the lighter boat traffic is welcome. Lake Norman can be eerily quiet!

Our 2023 PYC hosted sailing events are now behind us with the completion of the 5-race Fall Fellowship Series and the tremendously successful (with big air) 31st Peninsula Cup! Congratulations to all the PYC sailors!
