BOATING&MARINANEWS

CAPTAIN

Approaching another boating sea

Here are few points to remember as we approach another b

1. Take a boating education class. There are many boating education classes available and are good for all ages.

2. When on the water keep things clean! Do not throw trash overboard and always use a pump out facility to dispose of black water waste.

3 When fueling your vessel do not over fill and remember the 90% rule

4. Run blowers after fueling and inspect the bilge before cranking.

5. IF YOU SEE FUEL OR SMELL FUEL DO NOT CRANK!

6. As you approach the dock, come in as fast as you want to crash!

If you feel rusty and want to shake the dust before operating your vessel for the season please reach out to your marina team and let us help.

Marina Manager Reminder

Think Before You Drink!

https://www.boatus.org/alcohol-and-boating

Almost half of all boating accidents involve alcohol. That should be reason enough to leave alcohol consumption for when you are safely ashore with no plans to travel.

Operating a boat while intoxicated is a federal offense, subject to a $1,000 fine. In addition, criminal penalties are as high as $5,000, and may even include jail time. State Boating Under the Influence (BUI) Laws are becoming more stringent too. In most states, the standards for determining whether an individual is intoxicated matches its state highway laws for operating a vehicle

Please consider:

In most states it is illegal to operate a boat with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater. Some states will suspend your boating or privilege.

In some states your driving record could be affected.

Your boat could be seized or sold at auction.

FLEETCOMMITTEENEWS

Ahoy, fellow members! I m thrilled to step into the role of Social Committee Chair, and I want to give a huge shoutout to Laura Wendt for her outstanding leadership (and next-level organizational skills) over the past few years She’s left some big shoes to fill and a treasure trove of helpful notes so I’m ready to dive in! Speaking of diving… how about a round of applause for the brave souls who took the Polar Plunge to support the Special Olympics of NC? Their courage (and willingness to embrace icy waters) was matched only by the generosity of our donors If you haven’t had a chance to contribute yet, there’s still time! We’re accepting donations through the end of the month.

Cheers to New Fleet Leadership & Club Honors

A heartfelt thank you goes to Past Commodore Slocum for his dedication and hard work last year, and let’s give a warm welcome to our new Commodore, Pamela Black, who kicked off her term in style at the 2025 Commodore’s Ball on February 22nd. With her theme, "Members Matter Most," we’re in for an exciting year ahead And let’s be honest we all need a chance to let loose and dance, so I'm betting that silent disco will make a return appearance! We also took a moment to recognize some outstanding members for their contributions in 2024:

Volunteer of the Year: Steve Black Power Boater of the Year: Gary Treen Sailing Yachtsman Award: John Guthrie

Get Involved & Have Fun!

Want to meet more members, attend fun events, or share your talents? Our monthly Social Scene meetings are the perfect place to start! If you’re not receiving my emails yet, please drop me a note at venesueca@gmail.com, and I’ll add you to the list.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:

Book Club (Now Bi-Monthly!) – Dive into great reads and even better conversation.

Car & Classic Boat Show (April 26th) – Admire some stunning rides on land and water

Raft-Ups (Starting in May) – Kick back and relax on the lake with fellow members.

Educational Events – Join us for Lake History Tours and CPR training to expand your knowledge

Poker Run & Silent Auction (June 21st) – Help us raise funds for local charities while having a blast!

If you’re eager to lend a hand, contribute to the silent auction, or support our fundraising goals, let’s chat! It’s going to be an amazing year, and I can't wait to make it one to remember with all of you

See you at the Club!

THESAILINGSCENE

On March 22, the SHPYC Sail Fleet will host the Spring Fling Fellowship Race If you have a sailboat please register, or if you know someone who has a sailboat tell them to sign up for this oneday event and help them sail their boat To register and get more information please go to https://www regattanetwork com/event/29230

If you just want to crew or learn to set up a race course by being part of our Race Committee, please contact me at markalancook@yahoo com No sailboat needed

Check out other 2025 SHPYC sailing opportunities by visiting the Sailing Calendar and Races at https://www peninsulayacht com/sailing

Spring sailing on Lake Norman is warmer than most think, with a brisk breeze and clear blue skies. It is a great time of the year to take advantage of the wind and enjoy the peacefulness with little boat traffic.

See you on the lake,

Mark A. Cook Sail Fleet Captain
