BOATING & MARINA NEWS

Attention SHPYC Membership:

We have probably 2 of the nicest rental boats on Lake Norman that are only available for our members. These boats can be reserved months in advance, and we do offer “volume rental” Discounts! Calls for more details.

Stating this year, there will be a requirement for all renters before you are able to rent any boat on Lake Norman. This is not a bad thing because it will require more education which in turn creates more educated boaters!

LAKE NORMAN MARINE COMMISSION BOAT RENTAL REGULATIONS

Effective January 1, 2024

SECTION 6. RENTER REQUIREMENTS

Each Renter must: (a) Comply with North Carolina’s minimum boater education requirements; for example, all Renters born on or after January 1, 1988 must show proof of completing an approved NASBLA boating education course. (b) Ensure that they are appropriately trained based on the rented boat’s complexity and the Renter’s prior boating experience. (c) Demonstrate a familiarity with proper and safe means of navigation on Lake Norman, including the use of a navigational chart and/or appropriate navigation app. (d) Sign and maintain on file a “Pre-Rental/Pre-Ride Instruction Checklist” acknowledging that the requirements of these Boat Rental Regulations have been reviewed and understood by both parties. (e) Comply with all Federal, State, Local, and Duke Energy laws, regulations, and guidelines, including, without limitation, Duke Energy’s Lake Permit Guidelines applicable to docks and piers.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The Gravelines

We are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Marc and Oana Graveline, esteemed corporate members of Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club for the past four years. Their journey with us showcases the essence of embracing the boating lifestyle and discovering the joys within our waterfront community.

Marc and Oana were initially drawn to SHPYC by their shared love for boating—a passion that runs deep within our club's culture. However, it was the waterfront dining that truly sealed the deal for them during their club tour.

Not quite ready to invest in their own vessel, Marc and Oana were pleasantly surprised to learn about the option of becoming members of the Carefree Boat Club through our Corporate & Social memberships. The exclusivity of our club's boat offerings, coupled with extended access across all locations, captured their hearts.

A typical day for the Gravelines at SHPYC is nothing short of bliss. They relish in spending quality time boating with friends, family, and their beloved canine companion, Baxter. Upon returning to the club, they indulge in a refreshing shower in our club bathrooms before either grabbing a bite to eat or immersing themselves in one of the many engaging events hosted for our members.

Weekdays often see the Gravelines leveraging their corporate benefits to the fullest. Whether it's hosting pivotal business meetings or treating their staff to a waterfront business lunch, they make the most of their membership privileges.

As a community, we are truly privileged to have members like Marc and Oana Graveline grace our SHPYC family. Their enthusiasm, camaraderie, and active participation enrich the vibrant experiences within our club. Here's to many more years of shared adventures on the waves and cherished moments ashore.

Check out their full video interview on our Facebook or Instagram accounts!

Hello Fellow SHPYC Members!

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

2024 has been off to an exciting start at the Club, and I hope you join me in looking forward to all that’s to come in the rest of this year.

Many of you were able to join us for a fun night of dinner and dancing to the Dueling Pianos at the 2024 Commodore’s Ball on February 10th. Our 2023 Commodore Steve Hosler passed the baton to our 2024 Commodore Chris Slocum, who introduced our theme for the year of “Welcome Home” and this year’s Fleet Committee. We also recognized three 2023 award recipients:

• 2023 Volunteer of the Year, Beverly Brewer

• 2023 Ed Sherrard Power Boater(s) of the Year, a tie between Jason Winge and Billy Talley

• 2023 Sailing Yachtsman Award, Chris Slocum

Over the last year, the impact of the social committee has grown tremendously, and I am so thankful for the opportunities to get to know and volunteer alongside so many of you. The mission of the social committee is to engage members in meaningful club interactions via committee-led social and charity events, soliciting member input, and promoting SHPYC events.

We are trying some new things this year to support the theme of “Welcome Home,” including instituting a Welcoming Ambassadors team to meet new members and starting a member-run book club (mark your calendars for the next session on April 11th).

SAILING SCENE

Happy March PYC Sail Fleet friends!

As we enter the 2024 sailing season, our event planning is underway by our new Sail Fleet Team.

Several of you have already agreed to roles on the Lake Norman Keelboat Council – thank you all.

We also have opportunities for race committee (PRO, flags, recorder, etc.) NOR’s, WNS mark boat, Crew Party greeters, scorers, advertising and other.

We are also continuing many of our famed and favorite events to support our charity endeavors, including the Polar Plunge which took place on February 17th at the SHPYC pool. We have raised close to $5,000 as of printing - please donate and help us reach our goal by March 15, when our campaign for this year ends.

Mark your calendars for two other upcoming community and charity events:

1. Blood drive supporting One Blood at the club on April 27th

2. Chips for Charity Silent Auction and Casino Night the evening of June 22nd

Note: if you have an item or service you’d like to donate to the silent auction or would like to contribute to our fundraising goal, please contact me at: LWENDT15@GMAIL.COM.

Interested in getting more plugged in at the club? If you do not receive my monthly social committee email and would like to stay up to date on opportunities to connect and volunteer with other members, please email me and I would be happy to add your email to the distribution list. All are welcome to join us at the monthly social scene meetings as well, which are on the club calendar.

I hope to see you at the club soon. Take care!

Our on-water main events – Spring Fellowship, Fall Fellowship and Pen Cup – all take a team to execute. Please note, no experience is necessary.

If you would like to get involved in our 2024 events, please reach out to Gary our Sail Fleet Captain at (gary.bromberger@gmail.com).

We always have a great time and welcome your support! And spread the word!

The 2024 Commodore's Ball was a hit! Check your emails for a Dropbox link of all the photos taken from the night!
