GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE

Dear Members;

Spring, the long awaited, Spring! It is going to be an incredible March. For sailors, the long awaited March winds, for power boaters the opportunity to enjoy Lake Norman with kinder weather. Whichever it is, we look forward to seeing you all at the club and on the lake.

The Outrigger Bar & Grill is coming along nicely. We are hoping for a soft opening poolside some time at the end of March or beginning of April. We are thrilled to serve our members and your friends. The pool menu will be available at the pool and online. To-go orders will be picked up at The Outrigger.

There are over 14 events to enjoy in March ranging from Soy Candle Making & Champagne, Family Trading Card Night to St. Patty’s Day dinner specials and a Member Mixer. Additional activities include: Fried Chicken Friday, a Cork Club paired dinner, BINGO Night and a Prince and Princess tea party to name a few of the opportunities to be together with your SHPYC family of friends.

Thank you for your patience while the new gas tanks are being installed. Once all is operational, we will be selling gas at our cost, a Safe Harbor Marinas' initiative.

Kids' Camps are open for our members to sign up their children. Please contact: awatkins@shmarinas.com for more information or stop by the club to pick up a brochure. There are so many fun themes this year: Sports & Obstacle Courses, Dinosaur Adventure, Under the Sea, Superhero, Mad Scientist, and Animals & Creatures.

Don’t forget to contact Harry and the dockhands to assist you with your boat at extension 6513. As always, they look forward to making your experience an exceptional one.

Lastly, as the weather starts to warm up, remember that we have paddle boards, kayaks and canoes to use. Please call the Ship's Store to arrange for use of these complimentary amenities.

As always, my team and I look forward to serving you.

With kind regards,

Lamb Shank

Serves: 2-4 People

CHEF'S CORNER

Ingredients

• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

• 4 lamb shanks

• 1 onion, chopped

• 4 cloves garlic, chopped

• 2 carrots, chopped

• 2 celery ribs, chopped

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

• 1 (14 ounce) can beef broth

• 1 beer (Guinness)

• 3 sprigs fresh thyme

• 3 sprigs fresh parsley

• 1 bay leaf

• 1 sprig fresh rosemary

• salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat until oil begins to smoke. Sear lamb shanks in hot oil on all sides until browned, about 10 minutes. Remove lamb shanks and set aside.

2. Add onion and garlic to the large pan over medium heat. Cook and stir until onion is softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in carrots, celery, and tomato paste; cook for 5 minutes more.

3. Return lamb shanks to the large pan and pour in broth and beer. Use kitchen twine to tie together thyme, parsley, and bay leaf into a secure bundle; add to lamb shanks. Bring to a boil.

4. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until lamb is tender and nearly falls off the bone, 2 to 3 hours. Stir in rosemary sprig and season with salt and pepper during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Remove rosemary sprig and herb bundle before serving.

BOATING & MARINA NEWS

Our fuel dock is back and running!

As we approach another busy boating season please remember the rules when fueling your vessel. Each vessel may have different capacity and knowing that capacity is very important. Know your vessels fuel capacity will help eliminate over fill,

Safety on the gas dock should be taken very serious and fuel rules need to be followed.

As we approach another boating season there will be a lot of boaters coming over for fuel. I know fueling your vessel sounds pretty simple and for the most part it is. However it cannot be taken for granted! There is more to fueling your boat than cutting the pumps on and “topping’ the tanks off. There are rules that need to be followed and it’s very important to follow these rules. It’s very important to understand how your system works.

Remember these Fueling Tips

http://www.boatus.org/cleanboating/fueling/tips/default.asp

Whether you refuel at a roadside gas station, on the water at a gas dock, or use portable containers there are some general tips that apply to all fueling situations. Safety first!

• No matter where you are refueling, always clear the area of anyone not directly involved with fueling boat.

• Put out all smoking materials and secure your boat to the dock.

• Turn off engine(s), electronics, and extinguish all open flames.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the edge of the fill to prevent buildup of static electricity to prevent sparking.

• Don’t top off your tank. Know how much fuel your tank holds and fill it to about 90%. Fuel expands as temperatures rise.

• Clean up fuel spills immediately with an oil-only absorbent pad. Wipe down the

bilge or any interior parts that may have come in contact with fuel.

Treat your fueling operations with care. Never use hands-free clips, and avoid any distractions while fueling

Also for those of you fueling a PWC (Personal Water Craft) , don’t forget to pull the seat back to allow proper engine compartment ventilation.

Marina Manager Reminder

Don’t forget about the great savings at the fuel pump this season just by being a SHPYC Member.

De-winterization

If your winter service was completed through us, make sure to call and schedule your spring commissioning. Also don’t be tempted to have your vessel de-winterized to soon. March can be a tricky and unpredictable month regarding temperatures!

The Plantes

Today we meet The Plantes. Randy and Veronica share two beautiful children: Natalie (3) and Luke (1). They have been members here at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club for about 9 years. Randy said, "when I saw the place that had a restaurant with a view, the water, and the boardwalk [in addition] to being able to utilize the kayaks and the lake [...] it was like a dream come true."

Before kids, Randy and Veronica loved being out on their speed boat, racing through the waters of Lake Norman. On some days, they would spend a sunny day out on the lake and finish their day off having a bite to eat at SHPYC.

From chasing sunny lake rays to chasing kids around the house, the Plantes' lives are full of fun to say the least.

Though the kids can't yet participate in some of the activities, they have enjoyed some such as: the movie nights, Santa brunch, and the prince & princess tea party! Veronica said, "[...] it's not just the kids who are having fun [at these events] it's the whole family that's having fun!"As they start to get older, they plan on enrolling them in our summer camps especially boating camp!

The Plantes love the way The Safe Harbor Peninsuala Yacht Club is the perfect blend of an upscale getaway yet a family friendly environment. Knowing that their kids are loved by the SHPYC team makes getting out of the house easier and allows them to enjoy life as a family unit.

Keep an eye out for The Plantes in the dining room, kids activity events and soon out on the water! That's right, they have plans of getting a pontoon boat to so they can share their love of the lake with their kids.

Check out their full video interview on our Facebook or Instagram accounts!

The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club FAMILY

SHPYC Dog of the Month

Meet our dog of the month, Tucker! She is a Great Pyrenees who grew up on a farm before coming home with Mom & Dad and is now 3 months old. They predict she will get to be about 115 pounds when she is full grown. Tucker loves to chew bones, play with squeaky toys and is learning the command "heel" currently. The Great Pyrenees breed was originally bred to protect livestock against predators. In fact, Tucker's dad lost a tail from protecting livestock from a predator coyote. Tucker is a friend to everyone and is the fluffiest ball of joy you'll ever meet! We are sure she will grow up to be an amazing dog because she is already an incredible puppy. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Hoekstra for letting us spend time with Tucker!

Do you have a fur baby that loves the spotlight? Send their picture in! They just may be our next Dog of the Month!

The Best Ships Are Friendships

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

Hi, everyone! For those who I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is Laura Wendt and I joined the Fleet Committee this January as Social Chair. I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead as we work with SHPYC to cast a wider net with how we plan to engage our members in meaningful club interactions. We’re off to a great start with some of our recent events in February. The Commodore’s Ball on February 4th was a wonderful evening around our theme of “The Best Ships are Friendships.” We’d like to congratulate our 2023 award winners:2022 Ed Sherrard Power Boater of the Year Award – Joe Henderson, Sailing’s Yachtsman Award – Dave Krippene, Volunteer of the Year Award - Sharon Bray, David M. Goodman Spirit Award 2023 – Past Commodore John Camp, accepted by Sheila Camp. Several members also celebrated Galentine’s with cupcake decorating and champagne cocktails on February 9th. This was our first Ladies’ Outing for 2023 (previously called Ladies’ Day Out), which will rotate between evening and daytime events in 2023. Stay tuned for our upcoming Ladies’ Social scheduled for March 9th, which will be an opportunity to meet and connect with other members, complete with fun door prizes!

SAILING SCENE Winter Sailing?

I am originally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Our boats were on the hard by midSeptember and the ice might be out of the harbor by May 1st for launch. As it is now March, in our more temperate North Carolina, we Lake Norman sailors are well into our season already. Whether it be cruising or racing, winter brings us plenty of wind and sunshine.

Our 2023 sailing calendar is now posted on the SHPYC website and

On February 11th, we hosted our annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics NC. This year we had a record number of “plungers” and have raised over $6,000 so far for Special Olympics. Feel free to check out the team’s page, which will remain open through mid-March: https://give.specialolympicsnc.com/ team/472155. It was well worth a chilly jump in the lake for such a good cause, and it was great to see so many members who stayed after for a cup of hot cocoa and time to connect. Mark your calendars for some of our upcoming events over the next month! In addition to the Ladies’ Social on March 16th, our Spring Fellowship Regatta kicks off on March 25th, and the next Blood Drive is on Saturday, April 1st. In partnership with OneBlood, we collected nine units of Whole Blood at the November Drive. Each donation can save up to three lives, and every two seconds someone needs blood, emphasizing the importance of this drive. If you’re interested in getting plugged in, please feel free to email me (lwendt15@gmail.com) to be added to our Social email list or drop by for our March Social Scene the evening of Thursday, March 2nd at 6PM at the club.

Hope to see you all around the club soon; take care!

includes the upcoming March 25 Fellowship Regatta and April 1 blood donor drive with our partner, OneBlood! All are welcome!!

Volunteers: Amazingly, our busy sail calendar continues to expand with opportunities for all – boater, nonboater, sailor, or power boater (we need drivers). If you would like to be a part of SHPYC’s exciting 2023 sailing program, or have questions, please reach out to me at tdharbick@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you on the water.

Fair winds.
