Year 2023 - ISSUE NO. 7 - July January
It has been so wonderful seeing the sun shining and our members out on their boats enjoying the lake.
The Outrigger is busy as can be. We thank you so much for your patience as we iron out some logistics. We will be tweaking the menu a bit to be able to provide additional items.
July 4 is a Tuesday, and the Outrigger will have a buffet that day from 11-3. You will find the menu in the Watch on page 11. We will also have a DJ out by the pool!
We are selling gas at our cost - which is a SHM initiative that we are thankful our members can enjoy.
Here are some of the events happening this month: July 1st & July 4th events, Scotch & Cigars, Subs & Salad Bar, First Friday Music, and Stock Your Cellar to name a few. We look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying the club.
We can't wait for the The Outrigger deck to be finished for our members to enjoy, it is almost ready. Our Facilities Manager, Daniel, limbed the trees so the view is amazing.
Do you need your boat washed? If you do the Ship Store is happy to do this for you. Harry and his team are doing an amazing job with all of the Marina Services that we have to offer.
Sunday Buffets at the club are very popular! If you are new to the club, it won't disappoint. The food is amazing and the view is spectacular. We look forward to seeing our members at the Sunday Buffet. The buffet is from 11-2pm and our menu is served 12-3. Please be so kind as to make reservations as we want to make sure we have a table for you.
We hope you have a wonderful July here at your Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club.
As always, it is a pleasure to serve you.

My name is Kayla Tharrington and I am a Davidson local, born and raised. Moved to the Appalachian mountains after high school to get my associates degree, to then follow my dreams of going to University of Wilmington North Carolina where I graduated with a bachelors degree majoring in Recreation/ Sports Leadership/ Tourism Management school of health and Applied Human Science.
Immediately after graduating, I began my 7 year journey with ‘Encore’s Best’ wedding planner, Melissa Burton with Knot Too Shabby Events, in the Wilmington area. From that job, I was discovered by a very popular venue called ‘Wrightsville Manor’ who asked me to be their Onsite Manager and Facilities Manager. This is where I learned the ins and outs of venue life, and all types of events and hospitality. I specialize in weddings considering I have done well over 500+ weddings but am capable of any type of event. I look forward to working on events with the SHPYC team and our members!

• RIBS
2 to 2 1/2 pounds baby back pork ribs
Salt and black pepper
SWEET AND SPICY BARBECUE
SAUCE
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 cup finely diced onion
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon hot chili sauce
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Salt and ground pepper, to taste
*Heat oven to 275°. *If the ribs still have the thin membrane covering the back of the rack, remove it. See how in the notes section below. Season both sides of the ribs with a generous amount of salt and pepper. If you are using a spice rub, season the ribs with it now. Place the ribs, meat-side up, into a large roasting pan or rimmed baking sheet.
Cover the pan or baking sheet tightly with aluminum foil, and then bake until the meat falls easily from the bones, 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours.
While the ribs bake, make the barbecue sauce. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent, 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in the cumin and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Add the ketchup, hot chili sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Stir to combine, season with salt then cook for 2 minutes. Set aside in preparation for the ribs to finish roasting.
Remove the ribs from the oven, discard the aluminum foil and generously brush both sides with barbecue sauce.
First Friday Music is always a fun time here at the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club. This month, we have Jeff Brown performing for our members while they dine in for dinner. Make sure to make reservations as this event fills up quick!

This month we meet The Bachmans! Jacob and Jolynn Bachman became members in 2015 before having kids. Since then they have brought three beautiful children into the world (pictured right).
The Bachman's moved to the local area and needed a place to keep their boat but also a place to help them plug into the community. Their cousins were already members here at the time and they felt this was the perfect place to accomplish those needs.
Jolynn shares how their kids have grown up at the club and they have experienced a lot of "firsts" here. She talked about how the club makes life easier because they know that their kids are not only welcomed but are recognized and cared for by the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club team. Through dinners, brunches, summer camps, kids activites, and events, the Bachman children have gotten to know the SHPYC team very well.
In addition to all the fun they have within the club they also spend a lot of time out on the water! When talking about their experience keeping their boat here, Jacob said, "we always know our boat is safe and secure" and continued by saying, "everyone knows this but Harry is the best!" and that they know if they need anything for their boat, the Ship's Store team has got them covered!
Jolynn values the accessibility to the lake they get by being members at SHPYC. She said, "what most out-oftowners may not understand is that with [Lake Norman] being a private lake, there's not much accessibility to it" which is why being members to the club comes with this great benefit of always having a way to get out on the Lake.
If you ever get the chance to meet the Bachmans around the club, you will see that they are such a joy to be around!
The Member Mixer will be held at The Commodore's Room this month. If you are new or have never been, this is a great way to mix & mingle with your fellow member community! There are complementary appetizers to munch on and beer to sip on while you get to know the people who make this club great! Make sure to let us know you're coming by registering online at www.peninsulayacht.com
Electric shock drowning is a term used in the US to describe a cause of death that occurs when swimmers are exposed to electric currents in the water. As a marina that supplies electricity to our boat slips, this is a term we hear and think about often. Join Harry Smith out on our gas dock as he goes through the ins and outs of this dangerous and lethal phenomenon. The class is free and could save you or someone else's life. Register online to let us know if you will be attending.
Who's ready to splish, splash, and party?! Come on down to the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club for a pool party! There will be a DJ to get the party started and pool games for the kids! While you're there, be sure to check out The Outrigger for delicous food and drinks! If you plan to come, let us know either by calling the club or going online to RSVP. See you there!
We love celebrating America so much that we are going to have not one but TWO Independence Day Celebrations! Starting with the 1st of July, we are hosting a buffet out on the Veranda with activities down in the Tent & Commodore's Room. Then on actual July 4th, we will be celebrating over at The Outrigger with food, games, and music!
Lastly, you will enjoy our very first lakewide member event! Next month all the Safe Harbor Marinas on Lake Norman will come to SHPYC to have the largest member party Safe Harbor Lake Norman has ever seen! You won't want to miss this. RSVP now online!

Here we have Winston Maust, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever who belongs to our Membership & Events Director, Nikole Maust & her husband Tyler. Winston came into the Maust's life during the harsh times of COVID. Since then he has developed so many loves and favorites! For example, Winston is a lover of water and fetch. Combine the two, and you won't hear any gruff from him. His all time love though is cuddling with his humans. Winston is what we call a 100 lb. lap dog. His size will never get in the way of loving up on his favorite people in the whole wide world.
A recent change in Winston's life is that there is a new golden puppy addition, named Cali. This is Winston's new cousin that the Maust's will babysit from time to time. Though they have some fun moments together, let's just say Winston enjoys being the only child for the better part of his time at home with Mom & Dad.
Winston is nothing but love and joy! If you ever get the chance to meet him, he will make your day instantly better.
Do you have a fur baby that loves the spotlight? Send us a message! They just may be our next Dog of the Month!

Is there ever really anything better than brunch on Sunday? These are the times to relax, enjoy time with family, and eat all the food you were too busy to eat during the work week! Sunday Brunch at The Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club allows you to do all three all at once!
Come take a ride on the Nopkehee! With a maximum of eight people, your sunset cruise will be an intimate moment out on the Lake Norman waters. The boat offers bench seating inside the cabin which is the perfect place to enjoy some light hors d'oeuvres paired with a glass of wine or beer. If this sounds like an evening you would enjoy, head to our website www.peninsulayacht.com to register!
Our 25th Annual Poker Run Weekend, held on June 23rd and 24th, was a huge success. We upped the ante this year, combining our Friday evening Dueling Pianos dinner and Saturday afternoon run on the lake with a new evening Chips for Charity casino night event, incorporating the traditional silent auction.
In addition to enjoying a beautiful day on the lake, the weekend was profitable all around, raising over $30,000 for our charities – Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine & Dickinson Hospice House, and Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. Congratulations as well to our Poker Run winners: Michael Kingsley, who took the $1,500 first place, J.D. Fulks, our $1,000 second place winner, and Kendra Winge, who took the $500 third place prize.
The Poker Run and Chips for Charity events are just two of the many events organized by the Fleet Committee for the benefit of our members – which also include our Lake History Tours, Family Fishing, and Raft Ups. These activities are only possible through the support of the many volunteers who pitch in; thanks to everyone who made the weekend possible. We can always use additional volunteers, so please let us know if you are interested in getting involved.
With a cool and wet June now behind us, Lake Norman sailing is as vibrant as ever. Upcoming events include:
• July 8 – Vessel Safety Check
• August 26 – Crew Party
• September 10 – Fall Fellow Series Race 1
• October 13 – 15th Annual Peninsula Cup Regatta
As always, please reach out with suggestions as to how to improve our Club’s sailing experience for both youth and adults!
To fair winds and following seas,
Tim HarbickNext on the calendar is our Raft Up, on July 8th. We will meet in Reggie’s Cove - come out around 11:00 am, and remember to bring - and monitor - your marine VHF radio for rafting instructions. Registration and details will be available through the SHPYC calendar, and the event will include hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, and live music. A shuttle from the Club will be available for those who do not wish to bring their boat.
The Social Committee is the perfect opportunity to get involved in club events and meet other members!
Next Meeting: July 6th
The Fleet Committee is a group of volunteer members who work in partnership with the SHPYC club management.
Next Meeting: July 8th
