BOATING & MARINA NEWS

Rules of the Road

I want to reiterate an important rule that concerns a lot off sailors regarding sailing and power vessel right of way.

With the number of power-driven vessels on Lake Norman, ranging from PWC’s, bow riders, and larger yachts, we have to remember the small percentages of sailing vessels that also navigate our waters! Sailing is a great way to get away from all the noises of life and a great way to relax. What sailors don’t want to worry about while at sail is being cut off by the number of power boats that are out in full swing this time of year. Remember sailboats are considered power vessels when not under sail.

The rule states…

(a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: (i) a vessel not under command; (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; (iii) a vessel engaged in fishing; and (iv) a sailing vessel.

(b) A sailing vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: (i) a vessel not under command; (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; and (iii) a vessel engaged in fishing.

Marina Manager Reminder

1. Please remember we do not allow swimming in and around the docks. With all the electricity around the water, there is always the potential for stray current at different levels to be in the water. Please no swimming, and if you drop something in, let someone from the marina team know so we can assist.

2. Keep all shore power cords, phone cords and cable wire out of the water.

3. Dispose of trash & all hazardous materials properly.

4. No Grilling on the docks!

Remember, help keep your marina clean and safe.

The Peninsula Yacht Club Fleet Committee (PYCFC) partners with the Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club (SHPYC), and hosts an incredible series of unique and fun events that provide SHPYC members with the opportunity to meet and connect with other members. These are fun and engaging outings that help build friendships.

Fleet Committee events occur all year long. The 2024 Polar Plunge, Spring Lake History Tour, Car/ Boat Show, Pancake Breakfast, Family Fishing, Poker Run, and Silent Auction/Chips for Charity are in the books and each were a big success. Still to occur this year are the Summer Raft Ups, Fall Lake History Tour, Fall Fellowship Regatta, Peninsula Cup Regatta, and the Pirate Treasure Hunt (a family favorite).

All this can only happen because of 1) our incredible Fleet Committee volunteers and 2) our Sponsors. The Purser manages the relationship between our Sponsor and the PYCFC. I would like to recognize our 2024 sponsors (and their sponsorship level): Commodore Finks Jewelers, Foreign Cars of Charlotte, and Talley’s Pier 77, Captain Law Firm Carolinas, Commander

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

Hendrick Northlake, Promo Threads, Davidson Wealth Management, and Mission Enterprises II, and Ensign Hagerty Insurance, Masterpiece Detail, and United Community Bank.

Now for some reminders: 1) The sixth policing agency operating on LKN is NC Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE). Spirits (liquor and fortified wine) are only legal on vessels that would qualify as a residence (a vessel that has a berth, head and some include a galley). Unlike other boating violations, alcohol citations can have graver consequences. BTW alcohol is involved in most boating accidents/fatalities. 2) If your vessel is equipped with an engine cut-off switch, legally you have to use it. 3) Remind your passengers that even though they can’t be seen, propellers are sharp, spin fast, and need serious respect.

See you at the Club if I’m not out on LKN!

SAILING SCENE : BREEZY EVENINGS ON THE WATER ARE NOT SO HOT

"It's Too Hot to Sail Tonight" is a common excuse heard by skippers from crew during this time of year, but in reality it is much cooler out on the water with the wind blowing between 5 and 10 MPH at the 6:30 PM start time than it is on your driveway in the middle of the day. Maneuvering sail boats through consistent winds, with a faithful crew in the cockpit, in front of a setting sun is not so hot, but pretty cool! Peninsula Yacht Club (PYC) member skippers had some very pleasant sailing experiences around dusk this last month, and look forward to more. The weekday night sailing series will soon end in the middle of this month, but Safe Harbor is hosting the PYC Skipper and Crew Party on August 24th at 2 PM in the Commodore's Room, so make sure you attend. Complimentary beverages and snacks are provided. Sailboat owner’s “skippers” will connect with crew, new and experienced, to learn what Lake Norman has to offer to the sailing community, like our own Pen Cup Regatta in October and cruising events for non-racers, giving

our members the opportunity to meet new people and build relationships throughout the year.

Interested in Sailing? Want to meet some new people? Learn a new skill? If this sounds like you, the Sail Fleet wants to meet YOU this month! We are planning upcoming events and want to hear from all captains, crew, juniors, and anyone interested in sailing, regardless of your experience! To get on a sailboat this week, or to participate in our upcoming events, on the water or ashore, please send an email to the Sail Fleet Commander (rob.higgins@gmail.com) or me, your Sail Fleet Ensign Mark Cook (markalancook@ yahoo.com).

Fair Winds, Mark Cook
