Community Obituaries

Barry Keith Raineri, age 68 passed away on Sunday evening in Port Charlotte, FL. He was born on December 20, 1950 in Belle Glade, FL to the late Hugo and Leona Miller Raineri.

Barry had lived, worked and loved DeSoto County for the past 47 years.

Barry graduated from Pahokee High School in 1968. He then attended Palm Beach Jr. College in Lake Worth, Florida where he met and married the love of his life Karen Parker. Together they moved to Arcadia, started their life together and family. Barry owned and operated Barry Raineri Construction Company and was well known as a talented carpenter, licensed roofer and a State Certified Licensed contractor. Barry was a member of the Arcadia Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and CCA. Barry loved life, but most of all loved his family and friends. He was a very giving, loving family man who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was just that kind of man. He loved fishing and diving every chance he could get. He enjoyed cooking for his wife and for family functions. He loved tending to his orchids. He loved his job, he was an amazing builder.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Karen Parker Raineri of Arcadia, FL., two daughters Deidre “Dee Dee” Raineri and Asya (Charles) Bond all of Arcadia, FL.; one brother Carlo (Bonnie) Raineri of W. Palm Beach, FL and one sister Elizabeth (Clifford) Stuart of Stuart, FL.; three grandchildren Piper Lainne, Robert Lincoln and Laurayne Alaire, numerous nieces and nephews. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Johnny Raineri and sister Arlene Haley.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 11:00 until 12:00pm at the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Homes, 50 N. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 12:00pm at the chapel.

Amanda Ferrentino “Mander”, 28, took her place beside God January 9, 2019.

Amanda was born March 12, 1990 and was a lifelong resident of Arcadia, FL. Amanda leaves behind the true love of her life, son Cory and his father Jarrod Head. Her mother Jenny Lederhouse and Terrill Faircloth. Maternal grandparents Larry and Beth McCorkle.

Her father and step mother Marcello and Laura Ferrentino. Father by choice Joey Lederhouse with Donna and Maddison Lederhouse. Her baby sister and best friend Tiffany and Alaor Cendejas. Her beloved brothers Joseph (Jojo) Lederhouse, Kyle (Bean) Ferrentino and Hannah Laport, Brandon and Shalisa Ferrentino, Coby Powell and Jimmy Lowmark. Her beloved nephews Isaiah (Chucky as she called him) Cendejas, Elias Ferrentino, and Trever Lowmark; mother-in-law: Susan Head; sister and brother-in-law Lindsey and Donnie Konoche; nieces Chloe and Adaline. Aunts and uncles Victoria Saviano and Tony Marza, Jeanette and Teddy Crosby, Cecilia and James Oliver, Joanie and Tim Williams, Dorris Simms, Larry McCorkle, Andrew McCorkle, Richard Wilson, Jimmy Wilson, Joey Wilson, Anthony Saviano, Tommy Simms. Also, many cousins and many sisters/brothers by choice, which she loved.

She was met at Heaven’s gate by many grandparents, Angela Santucci (Nana), Tinsey Montgomery (Granny), James Montgomery (Papa), and Marsha and Drew Dedeaux.

Services will be held Tuesday January 15, 2019 at 11am at Ponger-KaysGrady funeral homes with a graveside services to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The Angels came lovingly and peacefully for Ruthie Lee (Williams) Edwards at home on December 17, 2018. Ruthie was born in Wauchula, Florida on February 18, 1935 and graduated from Hardee High School. She moved to Arcadia with her family in 1958 and worked at G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital retiring after 37 years. Ruthie and her husband James moved to Okeechobee and spent many wonderful years of retirement fishing and enjoying time with family and friends. Ruthie is preceded in death by her parents, J. W. and Edith Williams, husband, James Edwards, daughter Linda Gayle Butts and her brother Edward C. Williams.

She is survived by her son Keith Edwards, siblings David Williams (Alice) and Margaret Aiken (Vaughn), sister-in-law Doris Williams, granddaughter Mindy Butts and grandson Jamie Butts, and great grandchildren, Alexis Backer, Haylee Butts, Alexis Campbell and Destiny Campbell, numerous nieces, nephews and great/great great nieces and nephews along with extended family members Joe Barfield, Doris Barfield, Beckie Pearce and son Lawrence.

Marcia Marie Smith Age 54, of Arcadia, Florida passed away on suddenly on January 5, 2019. Marcia was born on October 12, 1964 in Fort Rucker, Alabama and has been a resident of Arcadia, FL for the last 50 years. Marcia loved fishing, reading, playing games on her phone but especially loved raising her son and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her loving husband Calvin, one son; Hunter Smith of Arcadia, FL and one daughter Crystal Carlan of Fort Myers, FL. She is also survived by her mother Catherine Eldred of Arcadia, FL and one sister Terri Nelson of Port Charlotte, FL.

Mr. Shelley Rapier,Sr. passed on Saturday, January 5, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Winchester, Kentucky on November 29, 1945 to his late parents John and Alice Rapier.

Shelley is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 20 years, Theresa; sons: John (Jessica) Rapier, and Carl Rapier; daughters: Bonnie (John) Allen,step-daughters: Angel Walker, Donna Ruby; brother: Carl Rapier; 8 grandchildren; 9 nieces; 6 nephews; and 20 great nieces and nephews.

Victoria A. Wilson, born July 24, 1947 in Dayton, Ohio, passed away on December 8, 2018 in Port Charlotte, Florida. She was a teacher for the public school system as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Victoria is survived by her husband William Wilson, sister Nancy Wilson, and brothers Mike and Matt Arndts; daughter Melissa Hicks and son William Wilson; grandchildren Terry Hicks, Amber Hicks, Victoria Hicks, and Monica Hicks; and great grandchildren Darvis Dennis, Jr., Deontay Dennis, and Dakari He is preceded in death by his Dennis.

“PUPPET BOY”

The hospital was good to them. They tried to make them think everything was going to be ok, but they knew something was not right with their baby Keith. Dad knew the whole story about Keith. He had known it for a long time. Keith was now about 18 years old, so I am not sure why I didn’t know more than I did, but dad was telling me about him as if he knew everything. I finally stopped dad and asked him, if this was a story or was this the truth?

He gave me one of his smiles. Is it scary? Dad asked. Well, yes it is, I said. But what about Keith, what happened to him? Dad says ok, let me continue. Well Keith was not normal, he always wanted to put his hands on you and smile looking right into your eyes. The doctors were sure that he was not able to see clear enough to even know what were eyes or ears, but as Keith got older, they started to see why he did that. He was a people person. He would keep you spellbound as he talked to you. If he talked to you very long, he would have to touch you, and he always looked into your eyes with his big brown eyes. He made you feel so at ease, so calm while he was talking. Remember he was only a few years old when everyone knew he was like that. All the neighbors would go over to see him, just to have him make them feel better. The pastor of the local church went by all the time. He knew that there was something special about Keith. He had a certain presence about him. The kind that made everybody feel special and comfortable. I guess that there is nothing really scary about Keith. He was like the best kid in the world. At 8 he started preaching and by 16 he was a missionary in South Africa someplace, building churches and helping people over there. If I am going to make up something scary, it can’t be about him. I just thought I could use the idea of his birth. That part was scary and was the truth. I agree that the story of Keith would not work if you are going to write a scary story. But if you want a real scary story, let me tell you about my idea. Dad stopped me right there. You have an idea of a story, dad asked? Yes I do, but I don’t know if it’s scary enough for you. With a big smile on his face he says, let’s hear it son. Ok dad, here goes. My idea is about a little boy who was born premature. Dad stopped me right there and asked me how I knew such things? I said TV. Where else? This time instead of the baby not breathing, let’s just say he was awake and crying before he could be delivered by cesarean or whatever they call it when you take the baby out through a cut in the stomach. And that his hair was already long and red. And he looked his mom right in the eye and said, “HELP ME MOM”, as they handed him to his dad. And as his dad tried to hold him, he wiggled out of his arms and scooted across the floor to his mom. Everybody in the delivery room watched in amazement at this newborn scooting across the floor. And when he pulled himself up into his mother’s arms, everyone started running for the door. His mom just pulled him close and kissed him all over his face. It was like they already knew each other. Like they had already bonded. They were carrying on a conversation even before the mother feed him for the first time. Boy, that is scary dad said. See you in the morning. He went on to bed and I just sat there thinking of extra things I could put in the “Puppet Boy”, when this eerie feeling came over me. It was so weird. I couldn’t shake it. The first thing I thought to myself was, where is the doll? I got up from the table and headed toward where I thought dad might have put the doll. When I opened the hallway storage closet, there it was. The box was there alright, but was the doll in it? I got closer and tried to look. It was turned to the back, so I could not see if the doll was there or not. I caught myself and thought, how crazy is this? Of course the doll is in the box. So I turned and closed the door without going any further and started to bed…
