“BIG DADDY” PRS SPORTS WRITER After losing the first two sets of their match against Lemon Bay, the DeSoto County volleyball team looked as if they were going to have
a short night at their gym and allow the Lemon Bay fans to get home at a decent hour. That all changed in the third set as the Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back as they rolled over
the Mantas 25-16. That was quite a turn around since the Mantas dominated the first two sets with identical 25-18 wins. The Lady Bulldogs continued to have their way with the Mantas
as they easily took the fourth set 25-15. The Bulldogs were playing confidently with a lot of energy and had everything working for them. Out of nowhere came a disastrous fifth set. Everything that a team

“BIG DADDY” PRS SPORTS WRITER Before the rain soaked 42-7 loss to Port Charlotte Friday night, Head Coach Bumper Hay gathered his team in the locker room and told them what they needed to do in their game against the Pirates. “I don’t have a rah rah speech for you. I can tell you that if you want to get the respect that you deserve, we have to do it tonight,” said Hay. After failing to move the ball on their first series, the Bulldogs went into punt formation. The Port Charlotte defense came up with a big play as they blocked Daniel Coronel’s kick and took possession on the Bulldog 21. The Pirates then took a 6-0 lead on a 10 yard touchdown scamper. The extra point was wide so the Boys in blue were trailing 6-0 just 2 and a half minutes into the game. It could have been a good time to just say, “we’re playing a good team and they have so many talented players we might as well give up now.” DeSoto County doesn’t play football that way. They play “smash mouth football”, it’s the only way

Leon G. Reckinger, 90,
of Arcadia, FL passed away on August 30, 2019. He was born on February 23, 1929 in New York City, NY to the late Leon Reckinger and Cecelia Vince. Leon was preceded in death in 2011 by his loving wife, Patricia Marvel Reckinger, who he met while still living in New York City. They married in 1971 and together, Leon and Patricia moved to Florida and lived in various cities throughout Florida before settling in Arcadia. Leon was grateful for the caring staff at DeSoto Health and Rehab and especially for his special friends and neighbors who kept in touch and phoned him almost daily. Leon was a man of simple pleasures, and will be remembered as an easygoing, good-hearted man. A burial service/gathering of friends will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Pine Level Campground Cemetery, 8905 SW Rabbit Tr., Arcadia, FL. 51 passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday September 2, 2019 at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota after a long illness. Tim, a lifelong native was born on February 2, 1968 in Wauchula, FL. Tim was a construction foreman with Zachary Industrial. Tim attended New Hope Baptist Church. Tim loved inshore saltwater fishing, bowling with his girls, and going hog hunting with the family boys. Most of all he dearly loved his spouse, children, and grandchildren. “THE TREE” Chapter 12
By: Bumpy Thermos With the animal and grandfather just looking at each other and not saying a word, we all began to think that they were somehow communicating. Well, I guess they were because after the animal went back to sleep, grandfather turns to me and says “I think your Uncle Doyle is in trouble”. Of course we knew something was up, after all they were tied up for a long time in each other’s face. Grandfather was visibly shaken. Something in their conversation must have frightened him. He then turned to the people who had brought us there and said that we needed to go, that we needed to go find Doyle. They agreed, but they wanted to help. Grandfather agrees and starts telling what he had found out from the animal. First of all, he starts, this animal’s name is, well I can’t say the word but it sounds like Sammy. He is a special kind of animal from a very special place. But, that’s not important right now, we need to find Doyle. When I first saw him, I knew he was the same animal that Doyle had over his shoulder when he came by with the fertilizer. I had never seen his face, but I somehow knew it was him. I don’t know how, but I knew immediately. If anyone would know where Doyle was, that animal should know. However, the last time he saw Doyle was over a month ago, the last time he brought in some fertilizer. How do you know that grandfather I asked? Well, I’m not sure. I think Sammy
told me. Somehow, I could talk to Sammy. We just looked at each other and talked. Just didn’t use our outside voices, I guess. But, I did get kind of a picture of where they go. It is way up on a mountain, above the giant tree, back in a bright green forest. What I saw was beautiful, giant trees and the greenest grass and bushes I have ever seen. But I have no idea how to get there or even where to start. The old man that was there spoke up and said that he had talked to Doyle about this place and Doyle had told him it was above the Tree. The same tree with the yellows and others, I asked? Yes, said the older man. Somewhere above all that. My grandfather started telling the old man that we have never heard of anyone climbing up that mountain, that it was straight up for miles and no man could climb up there. I know said the old man, but Doyle has always said that that is where he gets the fertilizer. My dad breaks in, he climbs up the mountain, gets the fertilizer and climbs back down with the fertilizer and this huge dog looking animal right here? That is what Doyle always told me, said the old man. Then he looks at my grandfather and says, you know your grandson is a Warrior, don’t you? A big smile comes up on my grandfather’s face and he says yes, I do know that yes, I do. He then turns to me and says and smiles even bigger. What do you think about that grandson?

West Readers are Leaders On the morning of August 21st, 2019, Superintendent Cline visited Mrs. Grimaldi’s third-grade class at West Elementary School to read the class a book. The students were able to choose from a variety of stories of which they choose “The Story of the Jumping Mouse.” All of the students were respectful and listened attentively throughout the entirety of the book. Throughout the story, Superintendent Cline stopped to ask the students questions about the storyline and illustrations, as well as, have the students foreshadow the coming events. Each student quietly raised their hand to answer any questions that were asked and listened to the other students’ explanations.
