Big plays spark DeSoto win 35-14 By STEVE KNAPP

After the Bulldogs punted twice and the Mantas punted once to start the game, the second Lemon Bay drive was halted by a fumble. Keimar Richardson jumped on it like a hungry man at a free buffet. From then on the Bulldogs were eating as they rolled over the win less Mantas 35-14. Tony Blanding hit Jakeemis Pelham on a swing pass to the left and Pelham did the rest as he went 84 yards to put the Bulldogs on the board. Blanding run in the 2 point conversion. On the first play of the second quarter, Ethan Redden intercepted the first of three picks for the Bulldogs. DeSoto iced the game as Redden returned the kickoff 32 yards and Blanding hit Ty Wesley for a 30 yard gain. Wesley went the last 30 yards to score with Redden adding a two
point conversion to run the final score to 35-14. There were several players who had big nights with Blanding’s performance topping them all. Blanding threw for 3 touchdowns and ran another in along with a two point conversion. He totaled 282 yards in the air. Redden scored twice along with a pick and a two point conversion and had several long pass receptions and kick returns. Redden said, “We should have put up more points against a team like that, but

The DeSoto County volleyball team is playing at an elevated level with district play starting next week. Two weeks ago they gave Charlotte a battle right to the end after being beaten earlier in the season. Last Tuesday Desoto had a chance to show another opponent that they are no longer an easy win on the schedule. In the opening game of the season, Imagine of North Port swept the lady Bulldogs 25-23, 25-10 and 25-19. That wasn’t the case in their rematch. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-23 and after losing the next two sets they came alive with a 25-22 win to force a fifth game. That game went down to the wire as the Bulldogs battled back. They trailed 14-5 with the Imagine fans packing up their belongings as they prepared to go home. They had to sit back down as the Bulldogs rallied back

Bulldogs ruin Seahawks homecoming, undefeated in district By STEVE KNAPP

Ty Wesley didn’t play the first half of the Bulldogs’ 43-14 win at Cape Coral. “It was all on me. I got in trouble at school, nothing serious, but my mom made me sit out the first half and I missed practice on Monday, but that was all on me.” During the first half, Wesley assured me that I would be hearing his name a lot in the second half so I should be ready with my camera. I’ve heard that kind of talk before but Wesley was serious as he went 56 yards from scrimmage on the third play of the second half to put DeSoto County ahead 29-7. He also went 37 yards for a score with 5:55 left in the game. Wesley totaled 119 yards in just 4 carries. Not many players can say they had a 30 yard average as a running back and scored from 56 yards out on his first touch. “That was my first game as a running back,” said Wesley. It probably won’t be his last as the converted receiver flashed his speed and quick moves to excite the Bulldog fans and his teammates. Wesley has a little “Muhammad Ali shuffle” type of move that left several defenders grasping for air. Teammate William Maybell also had a pair of touchdowns along with an interception and was a strong force on the Bulldog defense. “When

they scheduled us for their Homecoming, they disrespected us. So we came for business and let them know who we were,” echoed both Maybell and Wesley. Cape Coral burned 7:57 off the clock as they took the opening kick off and drove 55 yards to take a 7-0 lead. Once the Bulldogs got their offense on the field, it was “lights out” from then on. Jakeemis Pelham scored on the Bulldogs first drive and a 2 point conversion on a pass to Keimar Richardson gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. Maybell took over then as he scored from 20 yards out to extend the DeSoto lead to 15-7. Tony Blanding found Maybell in the middle of the field and launched a pass that Maybell caught as he had to look over his head and make a basket catch.
That gave the Bulldogs a 22-7 lead at the break. Wesley scored the next two touchdowns and Ethan Redden put the cherry on top of the offensive display with a 5 yard scamper with 2:55 left in the game. Sophomore kicker Daniel Coronel was perfect with all five extra point attempts. Even with 3 touchdowns in the second half, it was a poor performance by the team in the third quarter. In the first half, the Bulldogs never had to punt, they committed just 1 penalty and every offensive play netted positive yardage. It was a near perfect half of football. In the first 5 minutes of the third quarter they already had 2 penalties and had several plays that lost yardage. DeSoto lost a
fumble and had to punt for the first time in the game. The fourth quarter saw several penalties including personal fouls that could have been costly against a better team. The Bulldogs had a first and goal from the Seahawks 5 yard line and failed to punch it in. The fourth down play was intercepted for the only interception of the game for Blanding. Desoto lost the ball on a Cape Coral punt when the ball rolled and took a funny hop, which footballs will do, and hit a Bulldog player. On the punt the Bulldog coaches were yelling “Peter, Peter” which means get away from the ball right away. It is something that is taught in youth football. Apparently one of the Bulldogs missed practice that day and for

Don’t google this number. As far as I know there was no battle on this date in history. These numbers represent the number of players on the JV football teams when Charlotte came to DeSoto County last Thursday. The “fighting 15” of DeSoto County lost 38-0. But the back story is the Tarpons had their older players in the game to get a 22-0 score at the end of the first quarter. They have a lot of sophomores and perhaps a junior or two on the JV team while the Bulldog team is made up entirely of freshmen. Between a few injuries, players who have gone up to varsity, players who haven’t gotten their grades up to be eligible to play and a couple who missed practice, 15 players was all Coach Joe Davis and Josh Scheuneman had to work with. When a player needed a break or went down with an injury, the coaches choice of substitutes was kind of like that old rodeo and TV and film actor—Slim Pickens. The Bulldogs kept grinding and playing the best they could with what

they had. Once the Tarpon freshmen got into the game in the second half, they scored just 8 points off of the Bulldogs. DeSoto County had a couple of chances in the red zone but just weren’t able to punch it in. Quarterback Lane Fullerton hit Wiley Lyons for a 46 yard gain to get deep into Charlotte territory. Andy Garibay had a nice 33 yard run to get inside the 20 yard line, but the drive
stalled there. Tocarrum Brown did some hard running in the second half until he went down with a left knee injury and spent the rest of the game with an ice bag on his knee. Another drive ended with a Tarpon interception at their own 2 yard line. So the Bulldogs were able to move the ball. Shane Galloway hit one running back so hard that even the kids’ picture on his driver’s license had bruises
on it. “That felt awesome. We just keep grinding and we’ll get our hits in,” said Galloway. You’ve got to really admire the JV team. They are outnumbered in every game, yet they deliver more big hits and gang tackles than anyone else. If I was walking down a dark alley I’d want these “fighting 15” behind me.

Nancy Lee Boggess Arrington, age77 of Arcadia, Florida passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Tidewell Hospice after a long illness. Nancy was born in Tampa, FL on June 24, 1942 to the late Joel William and Marie Elizabeth Moolhuysen Kelly. She was a lifetime resident of Florida. Nancy was of the Baptist faith and an active and dedicated member of Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Arcadia, FL. Nancy will be remembered as a very loving, giving and kind mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and she will be greatly missed. She loved her family more than anything and enjoyed spending time with them. Nancy also loved her church family and would volunteer for many church functions. She is survived by one son; Kenneth (Rhonda) Boggess of Youngstown, Ohio. passed away on September 30, 2019. He was born on May 6, 1939 to the late Thomas Galliher and Fannie Bowlin in Burgin, KY. James was a member of the Arcadia community for nearly thirty years, having moved in the 1980s from St. Petersburg. He was a member of the local Moose Lodge #1327, the Elks Club, and the AmVets. James worked for many years in commercial building before retiring as a construction superintendent. In his free time, James enjoyed being out on the water and boating, managing
racing cars, and listening to country music. He was very proud of his collection of classic cars, and when he wasn’t working on his collection, he could be found traveling far and wide across the United States. James is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Struve of St. Petersburg, FL; his stepchildren, Michelle and John J. Beres of Clearwater, FL; his stepson, Scott (Bonnie) Legate of Bradenton, FL; and four grandchildren: Michael Brian McAleenan, James Thomas Galliher II, Shawn Michael Struve, and
Hannah Rose Galliher. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elaine Galliher, his son Thomas C. Galliher, and his sister Norma Jean Gibson. “THE TREE” Chapter 16

My grandfather was trying to get us together by telling everyone that we would all go this way. Hanson reached over and picked up Sammy as if he was as light as a feather. Sammy never opened his eyes. It didn’t seem to bother him at all. I have no idea of how much he weighed but his head touched the floor in front and his tail touched the floor in the back when Hanson put him over his shoulder. Sammy laid there as if he was made to be carried on someone’s shoulder. He even looked comfortable. Then we started walking toward what I thought was a cooler door. The big door opened and all you could see was black. It didn’t take long and we were all in. With the door shut, there was complete blackness with no sound, nothing. As soon as the door was shut, the room started moving up. For what seemed like a long time we stood in the dark. No one said a word, not even a whisper. When we finally stopped, a different door opened and we saw sunlight and big green bushes. I was sure that there was five of us that went in that room, but when we walked out into the bright green area, there was seven of us. Somehow during our exit these two boys had joined us. At least I think they did. I know that sounds funny, but I am not sure who came or not. So maybe I just thought there was about four. I did notice that the two boys that joined us also had big blue eyes and long blonde hair. They must be
twins, because they looked just alike. But everybody looked a little strange to me anyway, I just couldn’t be sure who was who. I didn’t know at the time, but later on I would be very glad those twins came, very glad… Outside, we grouped back up to here Grandfather gave us some idea of what his plan was. Again, I was sure it was going to be my time. I just knew grandfather was going to have me take a berry and become the Warrior, I just knew it. But, sure enough Hanson was called up front and grandfather asked him to show us the way. Hanson stopped and looked down at Sammy. Oh, so slowly Sammy opened his big blue eyes and raised his head. His long neck swung out to Hanson’s far left. Then his head turned around and looked right at Hanson. They both nodded their heads at the same time and then Sammy went back into his sleeping position. Hanson points the way and off we started. Thinking to myself, I wonder when will I get a chance to show everybody what a Warrior looks like? When would I get to show my stuff? Then a big smile came up on my face and I remembered what it felt like when I was the Warrior. I will get my chance I thought. It won’t be long and they will need me to get up that mountain and then I will show them who I really am. It will take a Warrior to get up that mountain. And as far as I know, I am the only one. I am the man. I am …. The WARRIOR…

DeSoto Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week “What’s on Your Play List?”
To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day in America’s school, DeSoto schools will recognize National School Lunch Week from October 15-18, 2019. The theme is “What’s on Your Play List?” National School Lunch Week will emphasize the healthy foods that are offered daily at DeSoto schools. We are planning to invite parent to come dine with their kids for our “What’s on the Play List?” special NSLW events. We also plan to invite special guests to help serve in our kitchen during this time. School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium. National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program. The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation’s children for over 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole grain-rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium. The “What’s on Your Play List?” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association.
