Three (3) years of experience in a water treatment facility/wastewater treatment facility with one (1) year of the experience to include supervisory experience. No magic left in the bag, Bulldogs lose 27-20 By STEVE KNAPP

When the final whistle blew at the JV football game in Hardee last week, the DeSoto Bulldogs found themselves on the wrong end of the 27-20 final score. The way the game was played it seemed like the Bulldogs just needed to get the ball one more time to pull out an exciting win. But there was no magic left. The Bulldogs had intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble all deep into their own territory to turn back the Wildcats on 4 separate drives. After falling behind 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, Wiley Lyons picked off a Wildcat pass at the Bulldogs’ 25 and ran it back to the 40. On the first play Donta Smith raced 60 yards to tie the game at 6. The Wildcats were driving again in the second quarter when Lyons struck again as he recovered a fumble at the Bulldog 10 to stop another drive. The score remained knotted at 6 going into the break. Smith showed nothing but tail lights and dust as he again went long distance on a 64 yard run to give the Bulldogs their only lead of the night 12-6. Hardee answered with a score and two point conversion to take a 14-12 lead going into the final quarter. Gershon Galloway intercepted another

The Bulldogs lost the ball on a fumble that could have been called the Bulldogs’ ball as the Wildcat defender scooped it in as he slid out of bounds. The Wildcats turned that into a 46 yard touchdown run and a 21-12 lead. It looked like the game was all over as the Wildcats intercepted a pass and ran 38 yards for a 27-12 lead with just 2:41 left to play. There is no quit in the Bulldogs as Lane Fullerton found Smith all alone for a 39 yard pass reception. The Bulldogs got the ball to the 6 yard line when Andy Garibay pushed it in for the score. Smith’s 2 point conversion made the
score 27-20 with just under a minute and a half left. With the Bulldogs trying an onside kick, the Hardee player tried to run with the ball rather than just fall on it. He fumbled the ball and there was a scramble for the loose pig skin. It looked like the Bulldogs had a shot at the ball, but Hardee ended up with it. They ran out the clock to preserve their hard fought win. With just 14 players suited up the Bulldogs played an outstanding game. Smith with his two touchdowns and pick was a big scoring threat at any time he touched the ball. Smith said, “I just got the opportunity to show out and everything turned out good except the scoreboard.”
Lyons had the two turnovers and was in on it seemed like every tackle for Desoto. Garibay had some tough yards on offense and picked up a couple of big sacks. There were plenty of strong performances for DeSoto with no reason to hang their heads after that game. The Wildcats did something that is quite rare not only in high school football, or college football or even the pros. For a JV team to go the entire first half without a penalty is a rare feat. The Bulldogs had 9 first half penalties in comparison and added 4 more in the second half. Hardee ended up unofficially with just 2 penalties.

Wara Nell (Smith) Ryan (69), passed away suddenly at Tampa General Hospital, on Thursday, October 17, 2019, following a brief illness. She as a lifelong resident of Arcadia. Wara was retired from the State of Florida, where she began working in the library at G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital and later at the Division of Family Services. She was a very active and beloved member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Arcadia, Florida, where she worked tirelessly in the office since retiring from the

She was preceded in death by both parents, John (Dick) Smith, Jr. and Mildred (Campbell) Smith, an infant brother, John (Dickey) Smith, all four grandparents, many aunts and uncles, as well as her second husband of many years, William (Bill) Albaugh. “THE TREE” Chapter 18

Getting inside the tree line wasn’t hard to do, it was actually very easy. But once inside, things changed. The trees were close together at the top making it dark and damp. And now I was beginning to feel a little scared myself. Where was Hanson and the twins? Had they gone ahead too far? Where were they? Then I realized, ok then, where is everyone else? Am I by myself? Somebody talk to me. Is anyone here? I guess while I was taking everything in, everyone had moved on. My dad steps from around a tree and says for me to come on, I was getting too far behind. I caught up with my dad and grandfather. I took an arm of each and started walking between them. I started thinking, ok now. I was told that I was the only Warrior left. If that’s true, then why am I the only one scared and have no idea of what is going on? Then I get this loud voice in my head. A voice I had heard before. It says to me that I would learn soon enough. Everything I needed to know would become clear to me soon. The voice seemed to have a calming effect on me. It was just what I needed to hear, but where was it coming from? Then it came to me, it was Sammy. As I looked up, Sammy’s eyes were closing and he was going back into his sleeping position. That voice had to of come from him. I was beginning to get a good feeling about Sammy, his kindness and personality. Sill, what a strange animal he was. Smiling to myself, I got to thinking how good it was going to feel to show everyone
how big I would get. I bet they will be surprised, I thought. Later I would find out just how wrong I was. Boy, would I. But no short cuts, I will tell you all about that later. The twins were moving in and out of the trees like they were always looking and keeping watch. But what made it even more strange was that there was no noise. We were in a forest of some kind. What kind, I have no idea. But there was no noise, not a peep. Were there any animals in here? If so, they made no sound. All of a sudden, a loud scream rang out. It sounded like a woman screaming, very high pitched and loud. Then it stopped. Then it started again. Then it stopped. Then it started again. Over and over that went on for a good 5 minutes or so. I looked around, trying to find the twins. But they were gone. At that point, I figured the twins had something to do with the screaming. While all this was going on, everyone froze. None of us moved. I guess we were waiting on the twins to come out and tell us what was happening, but no twins. They were gone as well. The screams were still going on when the first twin showed up from behind one of the biggest trees. His long blonde hair was all pulled down and the garment he wore was torn and hanging on his shoulder. He was covered in some kind of something, it was a silver color liquid, but had it been red, I would have said it was blood. He didn’t look hurt. But he had surely been in some kind of altercation. But then, out of nowhere, Sammy begins to moan.

Jim, Scott and Alex are tired after traveling all day and check into a hotel. When they get to reception, they find out they’ll have to walk 75 flights of stairs to get to their room because the elevator is out of order. Jim suggests that they do something interesting to pass time while they walk the 75 flights. Jim will tell jokes, Scott will sing songs, and Alex will tell sad stories. So Jim tells jokes for 25 flights, Scott sings songs for 25 flights and Alex tells sad stories for 24 flights. When they reach the 75th floor, Alex tells his saddest story of all, “Guys, I left our room key at reception.

21st Century Community Learning Center DeSoto Middle School is proud to enter its third year as a 21st Century Community Learning Center. The 21st Century program works as an enrichment program for students looking to expand their educational experiences in many areas. These areas include STEM, Health, Financial Literacy, and Character Education. We also offer students support in core subjects, such as reading and math. Our goal is to provide additional academic experiences that allow our students to grow in traditional and non-traditional ways. Many of our teachers create projectbased activities to engage students in a way they may not be able to experience during the regular day. At DeSoto Middle School, we meet before and after school. Our morning program starts at 7:30 am, and ends by 8:15 am so our students can get breakfast before the regular school day begins. Our afternoon program begins with a small snack at 3:30 pm and lasts until 4:45 pm. Transportation is available for the afternoon program. Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in the program may pick-up a registration form from the front office at Desoto Middle School. These forms must be returned to the front office, Mr. D. Staples or Mr. Edwards. Please note, if you need transportation in the afternoon, it takes two to three days to process transportation requests before your child may stay. Walkers and parent pick-up students can stay the same day they are registered.
