“This is what I’m passionate about, this is what I want to do,” said Arcadia resident Riley McKettrick. The 2018 Desoto County graduate loves having a 1500 pound bull chase him especially when the bull is not in a good mood. McKettrick played baseball and football as a Bulldog, but got into bull riding and found that it was a lot more fun. “I used to be on the other end of it when I rode the bulls for two years. It took me awhile to realize I suck at riding so I turned to bull fighting,” said McKettrick. There are two parts to being a bull fighter. He needs to divert the bull’s attention once the rider falls off. That is the protection part of his job, making sure the rider is safe and can make it to the next rodeo. The second part is more fun as he gets into a ring for one minute and tries

Bulldogs run to regionals By STEVE KNAPP

With a very strong showing at the district meet, the DeSoto County cross country teams advanced to the regional meet to be held this Saturday. The meet is at Lemon Bay High School with the girls running at 9:30 and the boys team will run after the conclusion of the girls’ event. The boys team placed 4th with Gabe Porter leading the pack with a 19th place finish. Leo Robles was 22nd, and Jayme Moran finished 24th. On the girls side, the team placed 7th with Lupita Manriquez placing 9th over all with a sub 21 minute run.

The 2019 Lady Bulldogs cross country team will be running in the regional meet this Saturday at Lemon Bay High School after placing 7th last weekend. The DeSoto County boys cross country team placed 4th last weekend in the district tournament.

Championship slips away in 44-7 loss By STEVE KNAPP

It was former Texas coach Darrell Royal who said it first, but Ohio State’s Woody Hayes often gets the credit for saying it. Because of the Big 10’s former philosophy of “three yards and a cloud of dust” you can see how that would be true. The saying goes, “When you throw the ball only three things can happen and two of them are bad.” Cypress Lake quarterback C J Shedd had thrown 18 touchdowns going into the championship game at DeSoto last Friday. The bad things that happen while throwing the ball occurred in the first quarter, but it didn’t slow the Panthers down as they went on to claim the district championship with a 44-7 win over the Bulldogs. Cypress Lakes is a good team and have out scored the other teams in the district 254-42 while the Bulldogs have been 133-82 in the district. On the first Panther drive senior Juan Garibay picked off a pass. William Maybell also had an interception in the first quarter. The big play came from Blas Cervantes who came up with a pick 6 on a tipped ball and rumbled 40 yards into the end zone to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

Blas Cervantes hauls in a tipped pass and races 40 yards for a touchdown for the Bulldogs. The score was his first in any game including DYF and it put DeSoto on top 7-0.

The Bulldogs also got down to the Panther 14 yard line but turned the ball over on downs. Maybell caught a short punt and returned it to the Panther 30 but the Bulldogs fumbled away the ball on the next play. DeSoto also moved the ball to the Panther 18 in the first quarter, but a sack took them out of field goal range. The opportunities were there, but DeSoto just couldn’t cash in on them. The Bulldog defense had a decent game despite giving up 44 unanswered points. Ty Wesley also had an interception late in the game. It was the potent DeSoto offense that struggled to put points on the board and failed to capitalize on good field

position. The Bulldogs amassed 240 yards on the ground but just couldn’t get the big yards when needed. Penalties hurt the Bulldogs too. There were two dead ball fouls on one play along with a host of unsportsmanlike and personal fouls called. DeSoto Coach Bumper Hay had told the team after nearly every game the same thing. “We have got to clean up the silly penalties and keep under control. We can beat some of the teams because we are better athletically but sometime when we play a team that is just as good as us, those penalties will come back to bite us in the butt.”

Hay did a good thing after the game. With tempers flaring and the players disappointed in their performance in front of a big crowd on senior night, Hay did not yell at them. He told them to take the burn in their bellies that they are feeling now and the hurt that they have and take all of those emotions and get ready for the Hardee game. “They’re already feeling bad, why beat them up any more? It’s time to build them up and give them motivation for Friday,” said Hay. Cervantes, who had scored his first career touchdown described the locker room. “It is sad, everyone is crying and we don’t want to be here now.”

After all of the excitement had calmed down and every day life was back to normal, I had a chance to talk to the DeSoto County Homecoming king and Queen for 2019.

Christhian Ramos and Lupita Manriquez were voted by their peers for the honor. It is ironic that as 8th graders Ramos and Manriquez “dated” and were voted by the school to be the “cutest couple”. Four years later they were named King and Queen.

“I was really nervous because I knew the other guys had a lot of votes too, but it is quite an honor to win this,” said Ramos as he was on his way to soccer practice. Manriquez was preparing for her last cross country practice before going to

the district meet the next day. She finished 9th overall with a sub 21 time. Manriquez said, “At first I didn’t want to hear the name because I was so nervous. When they called my name it was so relieving. It’s nice getting voted by the whole school.”

Vernon Ray Baucom, age 54, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Sarasota, FL. Ray was born November 8, 1964 in Arcadia, FL to the late Oby and Linda Lanier Baucom. Ray was a heavy equipment operator for 16 years for DeSoto County, FL, helping to construct and maintain most of the roads in DeSoto County. He also did land clearing and maintenance of the DeSoto County Landfill. He was a very hard worker who was very good at his job. Ray loved his family and enjoyed spending quality time with them whenever possible. He especially enjoyed watching the Miami Dolphins on television and NASCAR auto racing rooting for his favorite driver, Jimmie Johnson. Ray was of the Church of God. Survivors are his beloved wife, Linda “Lynn” Baucom, Arcadia, FL, Two daughters. Frank W. Hommema Sr., of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed on Monday, Oct. 21, at the age of 82. Frank was a loving husband and father and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol; daughters Relinda and Pam; his son Fishin’ Frank Jr.; and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who all loved “Grumpy.” Frank was born in Chicago, Ill., Oct. 19, 1937, to Herman and Mona Hommema. For much of his adult life, he operated cranes and heavy equipment; but he was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved catching snook and enjoyed participating in shark and catfish tournaments. He was best known as the original Fishin’ Frank Sr., who started the tackle shop Fishin’ Frank’s with his wife Catchin’ Carol. The shop has become an institution in Charlotte County and is now operated by his son. To honor Frank Sr.’s legacy, Catchin’ Carol and family will host a farewell gathering at Fishin’ Franks (4425 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte) Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. Anyone who would like to attend is invited to come tell fishin’ stories and say farewell as Frank Sr. moves on to go fishin’ forever. Their family grew with the birth of their first and only child, Kimberlea. “THE TREE” Chapter 19

By: Bumpy Thermos It was spooky enough without the screaming. After one of the twins came out looking like he had been in a good fight, the screaming did stop, but then we could hear Sammy moaning. At first, we were not sure what it was. Sammy had never spoke a word before, according to grandfather. So, were we hearing the noise or were we hearing the moaning in our heads? I guess it really didn’t matter. The main thing was Sammy was moaning. The second twin suddenly appears and he has some kind of an animal dragging behind him. I got one of them, he says to grandfather, but the other one got away. So, we will have to still be careful going this way. It’s like I freeze for a moment and look around. Standing beside me is my dad, my grandfather, and my grandfather’s brother. Hanson is standing over by the trail with Sammy over his shoulder, and the two twins are standing by themselves. One of them has this crazy looking animal’s tail in his hand. You can’t tell what kind of animal, other than big, long and furry. The tail was probably ten feet long by itself. Then the body was long and slender and where the body connected to the head, there was no neck. The head was giant and the mouth was full of large yellow teeth. Some of those teeth were as long as your hand. The thing did look dead. Its long tongue was hanging out and its eyes were closed. Yes, it was really scary looking, to me anyway. Whatever it was, was no surprise to anybody but me. Nobody else gave it a second thought. Heck, they almost

acted like it was ordinary. Just when my grandfather started to ask the twin what he was going to do with it, Hanson speaks up and tells them to go ahead and set it up. Then the twins take the animal and they hang it up on a tree. They made it look like it was watching where we had been. Strange, I thought. Who or what do they think is following us? In all the excitement, I had forgotten about Sammy. Hanson hadn’t. Whatever Hanson was doing, the moaning from Sammy had stopped. Hanson had laid Sammy on the ground and they were face to face in what looked like deep concentration. I did notice one thing I had not noticed before about Hanson. Hanson had a kind face. Watching them, you couldn’t tell who was giving who the information. But you could tell it was sad info. They both would raise and lower their eyebrows at the same time. Sammy’s would go up the same time Hanson’s would, then they would go back down. How long this had been going on, I don’t know. Maybe only a minute, but when they were done, Hanson stands up and tells us all to come over there. He tells us that Sammy had told him some very bad news. That there was a Rusty in the area up ahead. Whatever that is, it caught their attention. Grandfather asked him if he was sure? Maybe Sammy was wrong and that no one had seen or heard of a Rusty for over 100 years. Then Sammy spoke to all of us in our heads. “Oh no dear family, oh no!!”. Then with big tears running down the side of his face, he slowly closes his eyes and lays his head back down on the ground.

I was coming back from visiting my son in my Miami and I stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom. I just sat down on the toilet when I heard a voice coming from the stall next to mine, “Hey! How’s it going?” Although I was quite surprised, and I wasn’t in the habit of conversing to the people next to me in the stall, I nevertheless answered him, “I’m fine” I said “thanks for asking.” “What are you doing?” Asked the same voice. To be honest I was a bit taken aback by the brazenness of this fellow, but I would never ignore anyone so I calmly answered, “I’m using the restroom” Then I heard the same voice again, “I’m going to have to call you back, some smart-aleck is answering all of my questions.”
