Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

TOBACCO FREE FLORIDA ENCOURAGES COMMUNITIES TO QUIT CHEW TOBACCO DURING THROUGH WITH CHEW WEEK Contact: Jodie S. DeLoach info@tfp-desoto.org 863-832-0715

DeSoto County, Fla. – This Through With Chew Week, Feb. 16-22, The Tobacco Free Partnership of DeSoto County is encouraging smokeless tobacco users to set a quit date. Each year, Through With Chew Week raises awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco use (chew, dip and snus) and the effective tools available to quit. “DeSoto County is a rural area which has long been associated with cowboy culture and outdoor recreation. Unfortunately, the tobacco industry heavily promotes its products among this demographic”. Jodie DeLoach – Community Health Advocate. “Smokeless tobacco is not harmless and can cause serious health problems,” We want members of our community to know that Tobacco Free Florida has free tools and services to help them break the addiction.” Smokeless tobacco is not harmless and can lead to nicotine addiction. Smokeless tobacco causes cancer of the mouth, esophagus and pancreas, as well as increased risk of death from heart disease or stroke. , Smokeless tobacco can cause white or gray patches inside the mouth (leukoplakia) that can lead to cancer. It can also cause gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. , To raise awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco use, the Tobacco Free Partnership of DeSoto County will be hosting informational booths at various events within the community. Our Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Clubs in DeSoto County will also raise awareness by educating on the harms associated with smokeless tobacco. These initiatives have been, and will continue, taking place throughout the month. Those looking to quit tobacco can create a personalized quit plan using Tobacco Free Florida’s free Quit Your Way tools and services. The Quit Your Way program offers free tools and services like Phone Quit, Group Quit and Web Quit, in addition to individual tools like text support, a Quit Guide and helpful emails. Free nicotine replacement therapy – nicotine patches, gum or lozenges – are available to tobacco users who are 18 or older, if medically appropriate. For more information on quitting tobacco, you can call 1-877-U-CANNOW (1-877-822-6669) or visit tobaccofreeflorida.com/quityourway.

ot many people would have given the Desoto Bulldogs much of a chance against the Port Charlotte Pirates when the two teams collided in Arcadia last week. After all, when they played on December 10th, the Pirates had a running clock on the Bulldogs in a 63-27 rout. Port Charlotte was ranked as the second best basketball team in the area while the Bulldogs were ranked number 7. They had beaten the Bulldogs 12 straight times. The last time DeSoto beat the Pirates as so long ago that several members of the current Bulldog team weren’t even in elementary school yet. The Pirates have been playing a strong defense all season averaging just 51 points allowed per game. When they came

in to Arcadia and hung 71 points on the board, a prudent person would have believed it was another rout. The Pirates had only given up more than 71 points twice this season, make that three times now. If you look at the notes for that game, you’d see plenty of big plays and big players that contributed to the win. Ethan Redden led the team with 21 points, Speedy Gilchrist had 16, (he promised me at least 15 points as a pay-back after I paid for his admission to the girls game earlier in the week). Mari Redding had 15, including 11 in the first half as the big freshman took control of the game. Tyrese Prince completed a big week for himself with 13 points all in the second half. The Pirates had two players foul out in the final period and they had

Desoto scored 29 points in the final period with a lot of help from the free throw line. Gilchrist hit two to give them their biggest lead at 65-56. With a 14-5 Pirate run, the game was tied at 70 with

19 seconds left, Gilchrist hit two more from the charity stripe and put the final two on the board with another successful pair of free throws with 11 ticks left on the clock. “I was shaking on those free throws but I was pretty confident and just knocked them down,” said Gilchrist. Bulldog coach Darrel Nicklow told his team, “You don’t know how good you are, now it’s our turn (to win).”

Nicklow sat in his office with a big ear to ear grin and continued. “I don’t know what to say Big Daddy. I’m lost for words. They have a great leader and played us tough. That’s a well rounded team over there. I’m just so proud of my kids. We all played well. I finally got coach Rhoten. I’ve never beat him. It’s a big win. If it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t be coaching, he’s a great man and great

friend.” Nicklow and Rhoten were coaches together at DeSoto together for several years. Rhoten was the varsity coach while Nicklow coached the JV team. The last time the Bulldogs beat the Pirates was January 30 2007 and it was the combination of Nicklow and Rhoten that were the Bulldog coaches then. Rhoten has always been a class act. After the

game he huddled up with the Bulldog team and told them, “You outplayed us, you deserved it and if you play like that you’ll win the district.” The first steps in that run for the district championship begins tonight at 5:30. The winner of last night’s game between McKeel and Mulberry will travel to Desoto County for the opportunity to get bitten by the big dogs from DeSoto.

enior Tyrese Prince took charge on the senior night game with Mulberry by scoring a career high 20 points to lead DeSoto to an easy 81-41 win over the visiting Panthers. “I came out feeling great since this is my senior year,” said Prince in the jubilant Bulldog locker room. It was a slow start for both teams as neither team could find the bottom of the net for the first 2:45 of the game. The Bulldogs got out to a 13-7 lead after the first period but blew out the Panthers with an impressive 33-8 second quarter. Junior Chris Sanders has shown a lot of improvement over the course of the season and thrilled the fans and his teammates with a long 3 point basket at the buzzer to end the first half with the Bulldogs in complete control 46-15. The second half turned

into a layup drill for the Bulldogs as they constantly picked the pockets of the Panthers and with a fast break to an open player, the game became a rout. The Bulldogs fed seniors Prince and Quae Burroughs to beef up their point total to make it a memorable night. “It was a good night. The kids played hard, everybody got a lot of time on the court and everybody scored. It was a nice game, but the real game is Thursday against Port Charlotte,” said DeSoto coach Darrell Nicklow. Tyrese Prince shoots for two of his career high 20 points in the 81-41 win over Mulberry. DeSoto County coach Darrell Nicklow is flanked by Quae Burroughs and Tyrese Prince, the two seniors on the Bulldog team.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH SHIRLEY CHISHOLM - The First Black Female Elected to Congress

Shirley Chisholm was born Shirley Anita St. Hill, in Brooklyn, New York after her parents migrated from the Caribbean region. She began her career as an educator, the director of a Nursery in Brownsville Brooklyn and later the director of the HamiltonMadison Child Care Center in lower Manhattan. It was her time working in education and child welfare that she found her interest in politics. She started working her way up by being a volunteer at political clubs in Brooklyn and with the League of Women Voters. Her political career began to pick up momentum and she established herself as a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly. This provided her a platform to argue against the New York State’s literacy test requiring English. She felt that an individual not fluent in English does not make them illiterate. In 1968 she ran for and won a seat in the US House of Representatives and became the first black woman to be elected 64

to congress. She was assigned to the House Agricultural Committee which seemed irrelevant to the citizens that she represented in Brooklyn. Because of her support and role in creating the WIC program, she would be placed with the Veterans Affairs Committee and eventually to the Education and Labor Committee. This was the assignment that she’d hoped for. Chisholm’s staff was comprised entirely of women, half of those being black. She felt that most of the struggles in her political career were due to the fact that she was a woman more than her being black. In 1971 she helped with the creation of the Congressional Black Caucus as well as the National Women’s Political Caucus. In 1972, Shirley formaly announced her bid for the presidential election and became the first black major-party candidate to run for the seat of the President of the United States.

1.

Using an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks until pale and creamy.

2.

Put the sugar and 1⁄2 cup water in a small pan and heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil and boil hard until it reaches 240 F. Immediately remove from the heat and pour the hot syrup onto the egg yolks in a steady stream, beating continuously until the mixture is a pale, thick mousse. Cream the butter in a separate bowl then beat in the melted chocolate. Beat this into the egg yolk mixture.

3.

Take the frozen raspberries and thaw them in a strainer placed over a bowl. Press them gently with the back of a spoon to squeeze out the juice. Put the juice in a small pan and boil it hard until it has reduced to 3 tablespoons.

4.

Press the raspberries through the strainer and mix the strained puree with the reduced raspberry syrup and the lemon juice. Sweeten with sifted confectioners’ sugar to taste. Beat this into the buttercream. Add pink food coloring if you desire a deeper shade of pink.

CHAPTER 34

The atmosphere had now changed. The air was heavy, like it was pushing down on my head. I was the only one out in the open, but that didn’t last long. I would soon see why they called me the “Warrior” and what Sammy had meant when he said to tell Hanson and the twins it is time. My fighting senses were all a blaze, so I could feel them coming up behind me. I have already told you what the twins had become, but Hanson’s change was different. He now was huge. No surprise there, we all were. But Hanson was different. He looked exactly the same. Hanson was huge, but was still Hanson. No tail, no large eyes. Nothing different except he was huge. He looked over at me and says “are you ready cousin?” I gave him a quick nod and no sooner had my eyes began to move back to the front, here it came. This thing not only was big, but made the loudest scream I had ever heard. From out of the shadows comes this gigantic creature. The only way to describe it would be to say that this huge monster was running right for us. A huge monster with giant shovel like hands and a very big mouth. This thing’s mouth was so big, you could see the thing hanging down in the back of its throat which was shaking because it was screaming as it was coming. You could see the eyes, it had two. Big eyes that were fire red in color and as big as a small car. The thing was picking up rocks with its hands and throwing them as it was running toward us. As I looked to see what kind of help I was going to have 70

Peace River Shopper | February 11, 2020

when this thing reached me, I saw out of the corner of my eye, the twins. They were like flying around the outer parts of this thing and trying to get some kind of a hold on its back. Each one was trying to catch one of its hands and pull them back. Just as the thing gets up to me, Hanson steps up in front of me and shoves a big rock right down its throat. My dad and grandfather have large red rope looking things, probably tree roots, and start trying to tie this thing up. With all this going on, this thing is still coming toward me. I grab open my bag and pull out those metal things that look like finger holders and put them on. Right as this thing is about to overtake me, I jump up and come down right on the top of what I thought was its head. Down it goes and they all get to strapping this thing down. You couldn’t really see its feet, they were too small to really tie up. But it didn’t take long and they had him tied up in a ball. It didn’t look like it was going anywhere. As soon as they had it tied up, they rolled it over behind the bushes. No sooner than they finished doing that, here comes another one. This one was even bigger than the first. Everything went the same. And soon, he was tied up like a calf on branding day. Then nothing. Everything stopped and got quiet. Of course, we are all pumped up and ready for what was coming next. A couple of minutes pass and nothing. No more noise or movement. Was this it? Anything else coming? Not that that wasn’t enough, but was this what the scary writing on the wall was talking about?
