John Lewis Drake born January 10, 1943 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to John Cillus Drake and Dorothy Louise Handley. Mr. Drake was a retired long haul truck driver of 42 years. He loved family, riding his Harley Davidson, traveling, the beach and most of all sitting on his front porch with his coffee to relax and enjoy life. Mr. Drake became ill with cancer and lost his fight on Christmas Day, 2018. He leaves behind his love and life partner Jackie Love-Scogin, a son Timothy Paul Drake of Amarillo, TX, a daughter Derenda Drake Rush of Amarillo, TX, a son Kevin Drake of Lubbock, TX, a step daughter Pattie Roe of Lubbock, TX, a step daughter ChrisAnn McBride of Waikoloa, HI, and a Step daughter Regina Easlon Wilburn of Edmond, OK. He had 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister Lynda Louise Vaughn of Lubbock, TX, a sister Joyce Cunningham of Leveland, TX, and a brother Terry L. Drake of Sedgewickville, MO. Mr. Drake was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Leslie Earl Drake and a son Jerry Don Drake.

Jolene Riley passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Joe, of 33 years; son RJ and his wife Hildur Riley; mother Miki, brothers Jeff and Ned Shatzer; and three grandchildren Daniel, Katla and Emily Riley.
Jolene is preceded in death by her dad, Arthur Bowman. Jolene was very outgoing and loved football, golfing and especially loved motorcycle rides to the Florida Keys. She loved doing crafts, her favorite being stained glass mosaics. She enjoyed sunbathing and lounging by the pool with her two Westies, Harley and Willow. Jolene was an amazing cook, but her greatest love and joy was spending time with her family and friends. Jane Vernon Christopher- Age, 91 passed away at her home on Friday December 28, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Jane was born on August 18, 1927 in Media, Pennsylvania and was a resident of Wauchula, FL for the last 15 years moving from Earleville, MD. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wauchula and a member of the Eastern Star. She was always involved in volunteering for her church and community throughout her life always helping others. Jane loved to travel and read, was a great cook and had a love for the Chesapeake Bay where she met her husband. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her loving family. She is survived by her husband Allen, two sons; John (Joyce) VanLeer of Seattle, Washington and Barry (Susan) VanLeer of Mountville, PA; two daughters, Sandie (Gerald) Wood of Earleville, MD and Cheryl (David) Good of Windermere, FL. Barbara Joan Mixon, age 83, of Arcadia, FL, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Sarasota, FL. Barbara was born June 7, 1935 in Wabeno, Wisconsin, moving to Arcadia 64 years ago from Wisconsin. Barbara was a graduate of Wabeno, Wisconsin High School, Class of 1953. She worked for Central Maloney Transformer Company, formerly of Arcadia, FL, retiring after 20 years of faithful service. She had also worked for 10 years for the DeSoto Canning Company. Barbara enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, sewing, and annual Christmas trips to Disney World with her daughter and grandchildren. Barbara was a strong willed and independent individual. She had an abiding love for her family. She was a member of the Arcadia Church of God. Survivors are her beloved husband of 64 years, Bobby C. Mixon, Arcadia, FL, son, Steve Mixon and daughter, Pamela (Timothy) Vowels, both of Arcadia, FL, two brothers, Ronald (Judy) and Gary (Ann) Reeves, four grandchildren, Ashley (Michael) Ridgeway, Jennifer Lynn (Daniel) Ryder, Brandon Vowels, and Amber Mixon, five great grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. Barbara is preceded in death by one son, Terry Lee Mixon, parents, Clinton and Myrtle Voetz Reeves, and a sister, Patricia S. Bytell. Chapter 2 by Bumpy Thermos After not sleeping much and thinking about that doll, I needed some milk so I went down to the kitchen. When I opened the door to the refrigerator, I noticed someone sitting at the table. It was my dad. He couldn’t sleep either. As we both sat there just staring into space, dad asked me a strange question. He asked me if I remembered my cousin Ronnie. Who, I asked? Your cousin Ronnie, the one that had a boy born crippled. Oh yea, I replied. What happened to him, I asked? With tears in his eyes, he began to tell me about Keith, my cousin Ronnie’s son. When Keith was born they lived in a small town just west of here called Eagle Lake. It was a little town of about 75 people or so. They didn’t have a hospital, so most of the babies were delivered by midwives in the homes. The hospital was only 20 miles or so away, but a lot of the people wanted to make sure they would be safe to have their babies at home if needed. Well, Keith decided that he was going to be premature. At 8 months he was more than ready to come. Ronnie worked at the saw mill and would call and check on his wife as much as possible. Not having a cell phone made it rough to keep in touch. One day, Keith decided he was coming with or without his dad being home. The mom called the midwife and got her on the way. But, before the midwife could get there, Keith was born. The problem was he was born alright, but he wasn’t breathing. When the midwife got there, Keith was already turning blue from lack of oxygen. The midwife shook him and slapped his butt. She did everything she could to get Keith to breathe, but nothing was working. Time was running out. How long could he go without breathing? Keith’s mom was starting to scream and the midwife was beginning to panic, but still Keith just would not breathe. They did everything they could to get him to breathe, but with no success. Nothing was working, so the midwife got on the phone and called 911. The ambulance was now on the way, but she knew there was no way Keith would make it until they got there. What could they do to keep him from dying? Why the midwife did this, no one knows for sure to this day. She took the baby and put him in a sink full of water. Maybe she was thinking that the baby had been in water and maybe that would make him breathe. She began to dip him under the water and then pull him back out, trying desperately to get this kid to breathe. Then it happened. Keith started breathing as she brought him out of the water. What a relief. Finally he was breathing, finally. The ambulance arrived and took him and his mom to the hospital just to make sure everything was alright. Ronnie was waiting at the hospital when they got there. The hospital got her a room and they began doing tests on the two to make sure they were ok. It wasn’t long before they noticed that everything was not ok with Keith. He was not acting right. The things he was doing… Ronnie was getting worried. When the doctor came in the room, he asked him, “What would make him do that”???
