FINDING 40

WHO AM I?

New resident oncologist serves Dubbo “We also provide outreach services to Walgett and Cobar on a second monthly basis and that’s really to avoid people doing the 300km trip each way for a ten-minute appointment to see how their breast cancer is going, or their prostrate cancer, or if they’re only coming once a year.” Once a cancer is diagnosed and surgery done, cancer patients will consult with Dr Honeyball. “After that you see me and you’ll see the radiation doctors. Depending on what type of breast cancer you have, and to a degree what operation you had, we’ll have a discussion about what extra treatments would be beneficial. That can involve a combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy or endocrine therapy, which is hormone therapy,” he said.

By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY DUBBO’S first resident oncologist is settling into his new life here, though the city has featured in Dr Florian Honeyball’s professional life for many years. “I did my training in medical oncology through Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and as a result of that I used to fly in and out as a registrar once a week, with several of the consultants from RPA, and that’s how the service was provided in the past,” Dr Honeyball told Dubbo Photo News. “Last year I was Dubbo’s first clinical fellow, so I’d spend two days a week in Dubbo on Mondays and Tuesdays. “I think I’ve grown to love the town over the many years I’ve been flying in and flying out, so I think my wife and I are both pretty happy. I started work in May so it’s six months now and it’s flown by,” he said. Dr Honeyball’s office is located at the Alan Coates Cancer Centre Chemotherapy Unit behind the Dubbo Base Hospital. “Dubbo’s always had a desperate need for an oncologist. I was approached and I thought ‘why not’. It seemed like a great opportunity, and a big challenge as well to try to not just provide a comprehensive cancer service to Dubbo, but also to the district beyond.” He travels regularly to Mudgee, using Dubbo as his base.
