COMICRAZY CAFE When John Gilbert completed his studies at the University of the West of Scotland, he knew he wanted to be his own boss. By combining his passion with his business expertise, he’s created a community hub for fans of comic books and board games for all ages.

C

omicrazy Cafe is a comic book and board game cafe which stocks a variety of geek merchandise with events for young people and adults, and as an added bonus, you can also grab a bite to eat while you’re there. Launched on the corner of the town’s Old Sneddon Street and New Sneddon Street in December 2017, it wasn’t long before it was earning the reputation as one of the best game stores in Central Scotland.

and other cafes and shops already on the high street. “It was really important to me that we created a place that was fun, friendly and a casual environment where people could feel safe and comfortable. “We stock a plethora of products for all age groups from board games, to graphic novels, manga and trading card games with the most popular being Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic The Gathering.

For owner John Gilbert, it was a real labour of love and he was determined to offer more than just a range of products for sale.

“We organise and run events for all ages including tournaments, learn to play events and we’ve been known to throw the odd open mic night too.

“I studied business at UWS and knew I wanted to open my own business,” explains John. “I also knew that I wanted the business to be community based as I felt that was the best way to compete with online deep discounters

We want to be known as Your Friendly Local Game Store.” With after-school clubs and Board Game Saturdays there’s a real family atmosphere on offer for those just starting out on the gaming journey. On any given rainy Saturday afternoon, you can find an eclectic mix of families and students enjoying games over hot chocolate and more.

“The food and drinks that we have on offer range from burgers and hotdogs to pizzas and paninis,” adds John. “Drinks wise we have awesome coffee, hot chocolate, amazing milkshakes and we also have some beers and wine for mum and dad! “We’ve also just launched a kids board game club on Saturday mornings at 10.15am. Plus we have a selection of books and early learning games for pre-schoolers so no one is left out, there really is something for all ages.
