ne of the most eagerly awaited aspects of Paisley’s Food and Drink Festival in April was the return of the Renfrewshire CAMRA Beer Tent.

Craft beers have certainly grown in popularity in recent years, offering people the opportunity to drink all kinds of creative and unique beers.

Now thanks to one local entrepreneur, you don’t have to wait another year to try out the latest flavours.

Jamie Cockburn launched Paisley Craft Beer Co during lockdown and has recently launched his new store and tasting room in the town’s Silk Street.

“I've worked in retail most my life, including working in the Paisley Centre for five years,” explained Jamie. “During the initial lockdown, I had decided I wanted something better for myself, as well as something a bit closer to home.

“I was actually looking online for some craft beer to be delivered from shops in Glasgow and I thought to myself, it would be so handy if there was something a bit more local and a light bulb clicked.”

“We opened just before Christmas so we are still quite a new business,” he added.

“I wanted to open up in Paisley because it’s a great town with great potential and I want to be part of the town’s growth.

“People from Paisley are fiercely proud of their town, myself included. The Paisley

pattern is a great way to differentiate yourself from anywhere else in Scotland.

It's part of our identity and that's why our logo includes the pattern.”

Just six months after opening, the future is certainly looking bright for the Paisley Craft Beer Co.

With a great space on the corner of Silk Street and Lawn Street, the beers you buy from the shop can also be enjoyed on the premises for no extra charge.

“I would really like the business to inspire others,” Jamie told us.

“We also had our first tasting at the start of April with Glasgow brewery Simple Things Fermentations, and that was a lot of fun,” continued Jamie.

“We don't have any tastings planned right now but it's something we want to do more of. We also have some other things in the pipeline such as game nights being planned and exciting pop-up, so watch this space.”

“I would love to see a craft beer scene here in Paisley, like in Dundee. I would also like other niche businesses to pop up as well, because if a craft beer shop can do it, other niche craft shops can do it too.”

May Donoghue successfully sued a local ginger beer manufacturer after finding a decomposed slug in her bottle of ginger beer in a Paisley café in 1928.

Ever heard the expression “Gie’s a Slug of your Ginger”, well now you know!

“My goal has always been to have a good takeaway cafe that served nice fresh food and I just loved the location,” said Patricia.

“My background has always been food, I studied professional cookery for four years so anything food related is my passion and I hope to reflect that in the food we sell.

“I made the decision to start offering catering during lockdown as we lost so much of our custom due to the pandemic as most of our customers were office based.”

“We have catered for weddings, funerals, all kind of parties and large events,” added Patricia. “We have even had a request for just a full tray of cucumber wraps, nothing else on them.

“I always try to be a bit different in terms of style and packaging I use and I try to always make the food the most attractive it can be as I am a big believer that people eat with their eyes first.”

SCOTT McGINLAY CATERING 47 Causeyside Street, Paisley For the young entrepreneur behind Scott McGinlay Catering, it was certainly a case of following in his father’s footsteps.

“Food is definitely in the family,” said Scott, who opened the town centre shop bearing his name towards the end of 2020.

“I started out working after school in my dad’s butchers’ shop in Well Street when I was just 13 years old and haven’t looked back since.”

As well as his deli on Causeyside Street, Scott also opened The Butcher’s Deli and Bakery on Bridge Street and two other locations within Paisley.

“My plan has always been to have a deli and offer catering too,” explained Scott.

TASTEBUDS PAISLEY 22b Lawn Street, Paisley It’s a real family affair at TasteBuds Paisley in Lawn Street too. Sisters Elaine and Susie have owned TasteBuds for almost 5 years along with best friend Tracey.

“There’s been a café here in our location for as long as we can remember,” tells Elaine. “I remember visiting it with my Nana on our trips to Arnotts!

“Since we were at university in Aberdeen together, we had always planned to open a cafe and as Susie and myself were from Paisley,

“I could have taken on a big industrial unit but I wanted to have a number of smaller shops to be able to create more jobs, and I wanted to be customer facing.

“I am always getting involved in good causes within the community and I sponsor a number of bowling clubs. I am always looking to give back and I get that from my dad Graeme as well.

“That said I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my mum Evelyn too, the support from both of them has been amazing.”

He is also now catering for weddings at the town’s own Coats Venue.

“We recently received a message from a customer in New York wanting to surprise her family in Paisley and arrange for some food to be delivered to their home. We also have a customer in Australia who contacts us for every family birthday, anniversary and Mother’s Day to arrange afternoon tea deliveries.....so you could say we are a global business!”

PAW FRIENDLY PAISLEY Paisley’s status as a Paw Friendly town centre is increasing all the time with the number of businesses ready to welcome you and your four-legged friend growing almost every week!

For this edition of the Love Paisley magazine, we’ve been speaking to two relatively new businesses to the town centre who are taking Paw Friendly to a whole new level.

DOGHOUSE GROOMING Derek is the owner of Doghouse Grooming in the town’s Johnston Street, a dog owner and life-long animal lover.

“Dogs have been a passion for me all of my life and my love and appreciation for them inspired me to work with them,” explained Derek.

“We opened at the end of 2021 and I chose Paisley for the location as it’s a local area I’m familiar with and has a busy and vibrant town centre.

“Paisley also has a warm and vibrant community and that is reflected in its pets.”

“Over the last few years more and more

people have become dog owners as lockdown life left many people lonely and feeling vulnerable,” added Derek.

“We often have guest trainers in disciplines like heelwork to music. I am a Certified Trick Dog Instructor, Canine Conditioning and Fitness Coach and Animal Actor Certificate Evaluator and a Pro Dog Trainer with Absolute Dogs in Devon.”

So what are Denise’s top tips for getting your dog to behave?

“Dog training is evolving all the time and methods of training are way more fun than they used to be,” said Denise. “All puppies should attend classes Dog training is to help owners raise happy evolving all the trained dogs. Our dogs have time and methods to eat so by making use of their daily food allowance of training are we can encourage our dogs way more fun than to practice good behaviour they used to be. in the house and outside.”

For Denise Symon of St Mirin Dog Training, her love of dogs also began at an early age.

“As a child we had a 'cheeky puppy' who we took to obedience classes,” explained Denise. “I was quickly hooked and competed at Crufts as a junior and senior in obedience.

Over the years I have competed in many dog disciplines; agility, obedience, rally and breed showing and many of my dogs have worked in film, tv and theatre.

“My career as a Veterinary Nurse kept me very busy so running classes was a hobby but last year I made the decision to leave my profession and train dogs on a full time basis.

“All our training is positive reward based games and so easy to do, so having the chance to improve the relationship between owners and their dogs makes this the best job anyone can do.”

Originally the first dog training centre in the area, starting out more than 30 years ago, classes were previously held in church halls until the opportunity arose to open St Mirin Dog Training Centre in the town’s Hunter Street.

“Having our own premises gives us more flexibility,” said Denise. “Classes are held every night and during the day with workshops and events at weekends.

We offer one to one tuition and classes for all ages of dogs. There are also regular workshops covering topics like senior dog care and puppy care.

“Training is not just for puppies, any age of dog enjoys working with their owners,” added Denise.

“There is no place in the world for intimidation and fear in training animals so reaching as many people as possible to educate them in the best ways to train your dog is amazing.

Trade Paisley’s very own Fair Trade store, Rainbow Turtle in the town’s Gauze Street, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. We’ve been speaking to the team to find out more about their work and their enduring success.

“Before the shop was open, fair trade goods were sold by committed groups of people around Renfrewshire at various local church stalls,” said director, Colum Scriven.

“Rainbow Turtle's success is down to a number of factors: the passion and commitment of its supporters who believe in fair trade, many of whom volunteer in the shop; the fact that the shop is embedded in the town, many of the people who shop in it and support it are locals.

“Paisley has a history of social justice and we believe that doing something small in Paisley can have a big impact on poverty in other parts of the world.

“Ultimately, it is about trying to make the world a fairer place. If farmers and producers are paid a fair price for what they grow or produce, they will improve their own lives and that of the communities that they live in.

“The products we sell are made by people who feel valued in what they do rather than being

exploited. We believe that you can tell the difference in the taste of food and the quality of the products that we sell.

So what’s the plan for the next 20 years?

“We see ourselves firmly embedded into the fabric of Paisley,” said Colum.

“We believe that it’s small shops, like Rainbow Turtle, that give Paisley its identity.

“Whilst out of town shopping malls, like Braehead and Silverburn, have led to the closure of many shops in the town, it’s the smaller retailers that offer the personal customer service that is often missing in the bigger malls.

“Paisley also has had a long history of social justice that fits well with Rainbow Turtle’s ethos. We feel privileged to be part of that proud past.”

A popular spot for dog walkers, Gleniffer Braes Country Park offers amazing views of the town and beyond and is a great area for walks, runs and cycles.

While cattle are used in the Country Park to control the vegetation and preserve biodiversity, birdwatchers are also in for a treat with skylarks, kestrels, sparrowhawks goldcrest and chaffinches often spotted.

It’s a great place for visitors to experience Paisley’s nature offering and Renfrewshire Council Ranger Service regularly lead guided walks through the park for those who would like to know more during their visit.

Your Guide to a Great Day Out in Paisley

Barshaw Park Just ten minutes’ drive east from the town centre, Barshaw Park is the biggest of all the official parks in Paisley.

Facilities include a pond used by model boat enthusiasts, an outdoor gym, children’s play areas, a BMX park, with crazy golf and putting plus a fantastic miniature railway during the summer. Not to mention its very own golf course.

The park will soon benefit from a new community garden inspired by its local heritage after it was named the only Scottish winner in the RHS Garden Day Competition.

At the site of the former donkey paddock, the new Community Garden will be managed by the volunteers from Friends of Barshaw Park - who will also receive additional funding for investment in the garden and the group's work within the community.

Brodie Park Now heading to the south side of Paisley and the town’s Brodie Park.

Gifted to the town by respected banker Robert Brodie in 1870, it was opened seven years later and instantly became popular with locals and visitors alike.

Two kangaroos were later presented to the town by the Marquis of Bute and arrangements were made to house the animals at Brodie Park.

Local newspapers report that one of the kangaroos sadly died shortly after its arrival in Paisley after supposedly injuring itself on the journey from Rothesay to Paisley in February 1885.

The second kangaroo is believed to have died within a month of arriving in the town due to the harsh winter conditions.

To this day, Brodie Park remains the start point for Paisley’s annual Sma’ Shot Day parade celebrations.

Fountain Gardens Originally laid out in 1797, Fountain Gardens is Paisley’s oldest public park but perhaps most famous for its striking fountain.

It consists of a grand geometric layout with broad walkways, all of which lead to the Grand Fountain – an ornate cast-iron fountain at the centre of the park which contains statues of herons, dolphins and walruses.

The park is also home to what many say is one of the finest statues of Scotland’s national poet, Rabbie Burns.

Located on the very fringes of Paisley town centre, Fountain Gardens is an ideal place for a picnic on a summer’s day – just grab a takeaway from one of our town centre cafes and enjoy the sunshine!

SMA' SHOT DAY Paisley's annual Sma' Shot day event, one of the oldest workers' festivals in the UK, will take place this year on Saturday 2nd July!

This year’s celebrations will see a live programme return to the town centre for the first time since 2019, and you won’t want to miss it!

The festival marks the famous 1856 victory of the local weavers in an industrial dispute – revolving around payment for one small unseen but crucial stitch, the “sma’ shot” which bound together the colourful shawls for which the town was world famous.

The ever-popular Sma’ Shot Parade will be back this year with much of the entertainment taking place at Abbey close with traders, food, and the live stage.

Not forgetting of course, the traditional burning of the cork!

For kids, there will also be circus skills and ariel workshops and face painting.

The event takes place on Saturday 2nd July from 12noon until 5pm!

THE SPREE Paisley’s popular music, comedy and arts festival The Spree is back for its 10th year with a thrilling line-up for 2022 and a new date!

Live events will now take place in the iconic Salon Perdu Spiegeltent at the town’s Bridge Street from Thursday 1st until Saturday 10th September, promising a fantastic 10-day programme for gig-goers.

With the year 2022 marking the 40th anniversary of Paisley’s very own ACCORD Hospice, the team are celebrating the specialist care provided to the Renfrewshire and parts of the East Renfrewshire community for more than four decades.

From small beginnings in 1982, ACCORD Hospice has blossomed into an esteemed and well-respected organisation, now caring for more than 1,200 people with life-limiting illnesses across the community each year - at the Hospice or at Home.

“It’s thanks to people like your readers that we’ve developed end of life care across the community and kept it free for 40 years,” said Fundraising Manager David McFadden.

“The town centre shop in the Paisley Centre and the superstore on Glasgow Road continue to be a huge part of the Hospices income generation, both now and in the future, so thanks to everyone who shops with us or donates items to raise funds for hospice care,” added David.

“We really appreciate everything you do and the difference you make.

“We are also looking forward to bringing the annual ACCORD Art Exhibition to the town centre for the first time ever this September.

But thanks to RAMH – Recovery Across Mental Health – the building now offers valuable services and a whole lot more to the local community. RAMH Service Co-ordinator, Kathleen Gallagher, tells us more.

“RAMH REstore moved into the old Mothercare store in Causeyside Street in December 2019 and we opened to the public in February 2020,” said Kathleen.

“We are a registered Scottish registered charity based in Paisley, supporting around 7,000 people each year across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire in their recovery from mental ill health.

We also have a wide range of handmade items including dressed dolls, baby cardigans and seasonal crafted items.

“People are hugely impressed with the quality of our clothing. We proudly take time to carefully sort through our donations to ensure our stock is the best it can be.

Some items on sale may even be brand new with tags. We have many customers who shop with us time and time again.”

“With shopping habits changing and customers’ moving away from fast fashion stores we are finding more customers are shopping with us than ever before,” added Fiona.

With more than 450 customers using the service, Shopmobility and District enables Renfrewshire residents aged 16+ who experience permanent or temporary disabilities or mobility impairment to hire quality, safe equipment to help enhance life and health options as well as opening up opportunities - whether that be shopping, meeting friends or family, leisure, holidays, appointments or any other activities.

As well as the provision of advice, guidance and support in a safe space, they offer general repairs and maintenance for scooters and wheelchairs – maintaining both their own equipment as well as equipment which is privately owned.

During the COVID pandemic, the Shopmobility team didn’t hesitate to step up to the challenge, making regular calls to their service users to offer assistance. As a result, they diversified their service to meet

Our Trustees and Directors are all volunteers as well as the 45 volunteers who help us on a daily basis to deliver our services to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“These roles are varied and include Scooter Maintenance, Scooter Runners, Wheelchair Checkers, Customer Service, Equipment Cleaners, Administration, Survey Volunteers and many more.

“Our Volunteers are treated with the utmost respect and receive expenses for lunch, travelling, as well as a branded uniform, and safety equipment.

“They are also offered accredited training and non-accredited training to help volunteers and paid workers develop their journey to reach another positive destination.

Dementia Friendly Town Centre Paisley town centre businesses have started undergoing training with Alzheimer’s Scotland to turn the town centre into a Dementia Friendly location. Aileen Turnbull explains why this is so important to sufferers and their families.

Alzheimer Scotland is Scotland’s national dementia charity.

Their aim is to ensure that nobody faces dementia alone. They provide support and information to people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Meeting up with friends and family allow people with dementia so engage in conversation, have fun and enjoy people’s company.

“During the past two years the pandemic has been devastating to people with dementia and their carers,” explains Alzheimer Scotland’s Aileen Turnbull.

“Social isolation has exacerbated some people’s dementia and this has impacted on carers who have not been able to get the support or respite they need and has in fact led to loneliness and in some cases depression.

“Dementia Friends is a social action movement that provides sessions to give an understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia and turn that understanding in action, changing how people talk, act and

think about dementia.”

“Across the country we have Dementia Advisors who offer direct support to people with dementia, their families and carers, and engage with local businesses and the community,” added Aileen.

“We also have a 24-hour Freephone Helpline that provides information, signposting and emotional support to anyone who has questions. The Helpline is staffed by trained volunteers and many of those volunteers have had personal or professional experience of caring for people with Dementia.

“We also have 22 Dementia Resource Centres across the country, including one at 32 Riccartsbar Avenue in Paisley, and they offer friendly accessible environments for everyone to enjoy. Each Dementia Resource Centre is also a base for a wide range of local groups and activities.

“Having town centre staff take part in our Dementia Friends Sessions helps them understand the challenges facing people living with dementia and allows them to help them live well with dementia.

“Our Dementia Advisors are often asked by carers and families to recommend places to take their loved one with dementia and with Paisley being a Dementia Friendly town, they can confidently say that they can enjoy a great day out with the confidence that community know and understand the challenges people with dementia have.”

Paisley town centre is also looking to host a Tea and Blether event on behalf of Alzheimer Scotland later this year.

“Our Tea & Blether events are to highlight the importance of social interaction for people living with dementia,” said Aileen.

For those who prefer to get around without the car, there are plenty of great options to help you head to Paisley while doing your bit for the planet too.

Let the Train take the Strain Pre-COVID, more than four million passengers passed through Paisley Gilmour Street Train Station every single year, making it the fourth busiest station in the country.

The station opened in 1840 with two platforms but this eventually increased to four thanks to the booming textiles industry.

Station facilities include disabled access, toilets and baby changing area as well as counter service, ATM and ticket machines.

The station is also home to not one but two murals on our mural trail.

The building is protected as a Category B listed building and looks set to continue to bring visitors straight to the heart of the town centre, from Glasgow, Ayrshire and Inverclyde as well as other areas of Renfrewshire, for many more years to come.

Electric Buses McGill’s Buses launched its first fullyelectric bus route from Paisley last year.

The bus operator has invested £32.5 million in 68 zero-emission buses with the McGill’s 26, 23 and 38 electric routes, all branded Switch, going live last October just ahead of the beginning of Glasgow COP26. The company is encouraging more residents to make the switch from their cars, including video content starring local people and McGill’s very own animated zero heroes.

Next up it was the turn of First Bus who launched brand new fully-electric buses on service 9/9A, bringing yet another a sustainable way to travel in Paisley and beyond.

The move was part of the bus group’s pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2035.

Not Far? Leave the Car! 'Not Far? Leave the Car' has been launched by Renfrewshire Council as part of a drive to lower emissions as the council aims to become net-zero by 2030 and to promote healthier, more active lifestyles for local people.

The campaign rewards people in Renfrewshire for walking, cycling, or any type of sustainable journey, with discounts and freebies at local Renfrewshire and national businesses.

Everyone across Renfrewshire, especially those who work here, are encouraged to download the BetterPoints app and track their day-to-day journeys - with sustainable journeys rewarded with points.

On street parking is payable Monday to Friday but is free at weekends with all council car parks free on Sundays too.

Both our shopping centres also have multi-storey car parks just off Central Road and on Storie Street.

You can get a train from a range of Renfrewshire train stations or Glasgow Central to Paisley Gilmour Street train station which will bring you straight to County Square, in the heart of the town centre! With regular services from Inverclyde and Ayrshire too!

McGill’s Buses, who last year unveiled a new fleet of electric vehicles, have various services in and around Paisley, with more than 70 buses per hour serving the town centre.

Buses from Glasgow city centre to Paisley are services 17, 26 and 38 with plenty of other routes from within Renfrewshire, Ayrshire and Inverclyde.

First Glasgow service No 9 has also gone electric and will bring you to the heart of Paisley from Glasgow city centre via Ibrox, Cardonald and Ralston.
